With something like basic training for the army though, you can’t just head to an orthodontist or even a regular doctor though, and if you end up with infected wounds in your mouth, it could potentially kill you if it gets too bad. They don’t want to deal with that.
I saw a picture once of someone’s teeth with braces after playing football, I believe, and the only thing connecting like 6 teeth to their mouth was the braces. Horrid photo lol.

My cousin is going into the military next year, he used to have braces but he got them off about a year or so ago so he doesn't have problems with that which I think fits pretty well into the fact that it's next year!

Fun fact: You'll also need to have your wisdom teeth pulled regardless if it's and issue or not. I was in the Marines and after 4 years the Navy finally decided I needed them pulled or I'd be considered non-deployable even though I never had issues.
To clarify, once you are in the military it needs to be approved by your command because traditional braces make you non deployable. Invisiline doesn't require command approval because that aren't permanently attached. Typically, each command has a set maximum amount of soldiers that can be approved, for obvious reasons.
The Army doesnt “hate” braces. However, when a solider goes through boot camp, they can’t have braces on because of the potential injuries and non-essential maintenance of braces during intensive training. I had my braces removed a week before basic training and then got a retainer, then had the Army put the braces back on for free after my training. It’s pretty routine
We had to practically beg the orthodontist to remove my ex b/f’s son’s braces! He waited until 2 days before the kid had to leave, and still preached him a sermon about how he did not want to take them off.

After basic training you could potentially get braces (high demand, only certain bases have orthodontists), but it can also be a readiness issue, if you end up deploying you could end up having to take them off and then you could PCS to where there is no orthodontist.

I don’t know if the rules have changed or not, but when I was in which was about 15 years ago, the services would not do braces. It’s not that they don’t do them but to get them you had to consent to a LeFort procedure. Most ppl don’t agree to let Army OMFS doctors break their jaw. I knew one girl that did. She needed it and it changed her life her face and smile looked so much different. She was way happier. I saw some people get braces but pay for them privately at a civilian dentist.
My senior drill instructor had braces while I went through boot camp. Kind of a crap argument not letting recruits have braces when the drill instructors are doing the same stuff as the recruits.
My father used to do military service in the Netherlands for a period. He had braces with rubber bands. Every day you have to identify yourself before you go to training and every day it is the same people. After several months my father forgot his identification one day and the man who checked him every day sent him back to get it. This would get him a report (negative notes) for being late. So he got a little angry, but HAD to go back. When he picked it up and got back, he said: "HERE you have it". And while he said "HERE" quite pissed off, one of his braces rubber bands came loose. He got two reports, one for being late, one for bothering the man with his rubber band and was not allowed to go home that weekend. This was way back in the day though and in the Netherlands, so not related to this case, but made me think of the story because it was related to braces :)

In Norway you can come in with braces, as I self had braces while recently joining the army. Before there were a policy against it, but now they have changed many of the guidelines, now they take in everyone just so we can strengthen our defence

During BCT, you have a lot of combative exercises and getting hit in the mouth with braces would not feel good at all

I was never able to get braces when i was in the navy because I was on sea duty for 6 years. That bugged the hell out of me.
The problem is. Invisalign isn’t covered so you have to pay out of pocket. Braces are covered but it makes you non-deployable.
