Something to keep in mind: in the air force the jets I operated on could produce sounds in the 150+ dB range. EXTREMELY loud. We would wear the ear foam inserts AND headphones together. That works well.
I used to work in a factory that produced aluminum oxide in a large electric furnace. When the furnace was being loaded and the electric rods were not yet covered by the raw materials, the noise was so intense that even at over 800 feet away the discomfort in my chest would make me go outside the building to escape the noise.
I used to do that on the ramp at O'hare. You have to insert the foam ones right. Pull your ear open, insert, and let your ear close. There are ones that work much better than the regular foam ones.
More than three decades ago, I owned and operated an archery and firearms shop. I employed the same double hearing protection strategy when shooting Model 53 Smith & Wesson revolvers. I found it an especially wise practice to adopt when shooting from a benchrest while testing handloads. In that circumstance, the shooter tends to be hunched up closer behind the firearm. Moreover, benchrest shooting positions are often protected from the weather under roofs. Those structures reflect the report back down at the shooter in a similar, though less efficient, manner to that demonstrated with the riot shield. For those unfamiliar with the Model 53, it fires the .22 Jet cartridge, which is a .357 Magnum case necked down to .22 caliber--the muzzle report produced is an intensely sharp crack!
I talked to Agent JayZ (jet turbine guy). He says his crew uses foam earplugs under the shop over the head ear protection. I work in noisy environments but we actually overprotect according to our own rules and hearing conservation training material. This too is dangerous if you can't hear somebody tell "stop, that floor tile is open" and the like (computer rooms).
I work in MRI, and have lots of practice putting in earplugs. Techniques are similar, but different depending on the shape of the ear canal. Also pulling the ear back and up, or pulling the skin anterior to the ear & cartilage forward while pressing down opens up the canal for easier insertion.
During my 50 years as a Plumber, I was employed to clean and seal water storage tanks by numerous clients. The sealing medium used was bitumen. Working inside the tank as it was sealed the external noise almost disappeared. Ever since I discovered this I has painted my ear protectors with bitumen. This, by my estimation, eliminates another 30% of external noise. Thanks

Would that LRAD was a weapon of war. I'd have a few less nightmares. But, LRAD systems do have a useful mode as well, as a super PA system, which has been used to the public good after a disaster. In one case, trapped survivors attributed the LRAD transmitted "help is on the way" to restoring their hope for rescue, which did eventually arrive. Remember, help sharing a disaster is help in need of help as well. :/ As for protection from the device, one has to protect the ears, mastoid process and even one's respiratory tract to prevent the noise from reaching its transmission channels to the inner ear. The respiratory tract pathway being at actually destructive levels of sound pressure. A good test would be a quality motorcycle helmet that has hearing protection built in. Well, that or me set on Angry. I start off 50ish db down, secondary to noise induced hearing loss. Add adrenaline into the equation, well, that's why riot control measures fail with some individuals. Because, nothing is foolproof, as fools are so damned ingenious. ;)

In the Navy we were "required" to use double hearing protection when around jet engines ie: foam plugs as well as head set , gel ear surrounds work better than the foam ones.
A retro reflector is made of three mutually perpendicular surfaces. (inside corner). They are easy to make and could make awesome LRAD armor or shields, because they reflect back at the source. I mention this because flats are probably easier to come by than curved sections.

Pro tip for protestors: Everyone take a garbage can lid or similar(like those plastic dish shaped sleds) and direct this shit back at the oppressive tyrants. Just found this after reading about the LRAD abuse in Oz, and my immediate solution was to use a parabolic DISH to redirect the signal back at the device. And you just showed the result of reversing the riot shield. Make a large parabolic shield for obvious protection against objects, and turn it around when someone is using LRAD against you.

Now, I am confident (if no copy/paste was done) you understand a sat dish (partial parabola, not balanced) has an extremely short focus point (where the LNBF goes). My thought was to take the curve out and press for a straight reflective device. A metal garbage can lid (with a handle!) could be used to GREAT effect, and if smoothed out on the inside surface -- to VERY GREAT effect. A regular sat dish -- not so much.

I used my older full face helmet with foam earplugs in my shop, they worked great. The helmet wasnt up to riding anymore after an accident, but worked great for shop protection
I would imagine as it comes tightly around your head vs the one they tested where the frequency can come right up under the shield whereas a helmet with all its foam insulation & protective padding would deflect & absorp a great deal of it.

Given the way the test subject kept pressing on his ears with ear plugs, I have to assume they were not properly inserted into the ear canal. You're supposed to roll them into a little worm with your fingers, slide the worm fully into the ear canal, then hold it there until it expands. I also agree that ear plugs + muffs would have been a worthwhile test condition.
yes i can say from using those from years running chainsaws if you get the right size and put them in properly also dont get super soft ones. they work 10x better than electronic headphones or normal headphones. they did it horribly wrong here. they also used the softest brand of plugs haha

That's good to know that you can use a reverse riot shield to defend your self from a LRAD, and also reweaponize it for your own defence in the case of being assaulted by such a weapon during a peaceful protest. I would say that having a PPRS setup (Plugs Protectors Reverse Shield) would make this useless, and counter productive for the aggressor.

It looks like the cops are using microwave though, not sound. A simple plastic barrier is probably not going to help, you'd need microwave shielding (whatever that look like, I haven't looked it up).

3 weeks ago I had never heard of LRAD technology. I am beyond sad that I have seen that even I need to learn how to protect myself from my government since I don't believe in the 'party line'. My retirement shouldn't have to be filled with these new stresses. Pulling my cash out of my bank, food storage, and protecting myself from tyranny... not the stuff that a well-earned retirement is made of. God help us.

There are photos of them using it on the first day and there is footage of another one on the top of a police vehicle the next day, and there is video of the police chief asking for immunity before answering, then he said "yes we used it." It has been approved for use against well behaved Australians protesters.

Ear plugs with ear muff increase protection when shooting. One could also use a parabolic satellite dish, trash can lid, sheet metal, and similar. With many persons reflecting the energy back, it would be like a solar cooker in intensity.
This may have been used on Australian freedom protesters. Question are being asked in our Parliment now as many examples of burn victims are being posted. Kids and families.

Regarding electronic headphones, some of them are frequency-dependent in their protection triggering ("gating," to us audio nerds). Given your LRAD is outputting sound well within the peak speech band, and the headphones are tuned to pass speech through, it could explain why they behaved unexpectedly. Also, I'd love to see an acoustician chime in on this subject of deflecting high SPL. A riot shield has its uses, but it would probably not serve well at a concert, for instance.
Very interesting! I wonder if the combined acoustic pressure of the LRAD and the reflection from the riot shield would be visible on a Schlieren optics setup. It would be cool to see the focal point physically using that.
Why stop there? Add a microphone and amplifier to it and use your reflecting device to dramatically increase the volume of the sound you reflect back. I bet they turn their silly noises off really quick then.
To think variations of these devices were deployed in parks to keep the kids away is truly disturbing. I was actually targetted by one of these at work which damaged my right ear where I can't hear certain frequencies anymore. Very dangerous device to be used outside of a war zone. @@RichardBaran Philadelphia was using a device called the Mosquito in parks and other places at night to keep kids away while claiming anyone over 25 would be unaffected which is total bs as even though I am in my 30s I can still hear many of the high frequency sounds that only kids are supposed to be able to hear. If I lived in Philadelphia and had one of those anywhere near where I lived I would destroy the dam thing as I hate high frequency sounds especially the ones that are high enough that most others don't hear them.

I found it interesting that you could hear the reflection of the sound into the camera. Not surprised, but definitely cool. Did you try plugs and earmuffs at the same time at all?
At these volumes, ear protection is actually limited by bone conduction. The maximum decrease in noise level does vary with frequency, but that does become the limiting factor. That's obviously not to say that these techniques are effective, just that you do eventually hit a limit that bypasses physical hearing protection.
@@dexiedude Bone conduction hearing is much lower-pain and much less likely to leave a lasting damage than direct auditory hearing. It's worth exploring. Interestingly, while your ears can generally hear to 20KHz (less with age, slightly more in select individuals in youth), bone conduction hearing has been demonstrated for higher frequencies up to 150 KHz if memory serves, 50KHz for sure. However the frequency resolution stops at about 16.5 KHz, so test participants could no longer distinguish higher frequency sounds from each other beyond that frequency - actually likely there is no frequency resolution beyond that for any hearing path. Anyway if one were to build a specifically bone conduction targeting LRAD to bypass hearing protection, it seems, it might as well be ultrasonic. Just a random thought i had.
@@none3691 you can only do reverse phase cancellation in small spaces due to the varying locations of peaks and troughs of pressure. That is how active noise cancellation works on headphones
I had a 2nd degree belt in shotokan and the shit they teach you is delusional and you end up deluded into thinking you can stop people with weapons (99% of these students, regardless of belts will end up being stabbed to death or shot to death). And also almost entirely useless in a street fight as well. (Mainly participated in sparring tourney's, personally, never bothered doing kata).

They end up believing they are practically indestructible due to being in martial arts for years, because their minds are filled with toxic levels of overconfidence by their sensei's. This is all aside from the fact that many modern karate schools brainwash many children into christianity as well. There are barely any secular karate schools anymore, where religion is never talked about.

suggestions: - try to build a reflector that has a reflective surface similar to the reflectors in catseyes( groups of three surfaces vertical to each other) that should reflect any sound back to source. -try to build a bucket/all direction enclosed helmet. do not forget to allow for airflow...
You don't want a bucket helmet it would just reverberate the sound all around you and it would "catch" a lot of the sound it would otherwise detract. You either want a soft casing helmet to absorb the sound or a deflector that's a good distance from your ears to defract it
What about defeating an Active Denial System (ADS) like Silent Guardian, which uses millimeter wave energy, exciting the water and fat molecules in the skin, and instantly heating them via dielectric heating?
I think water droplets are meant to disperse it pretty significantly (it is predicted that it might no function in rain or snow) so some kind of mist machine or portable sprinkler system might be enough to make it effective. that is assuming the users of the ADS have a conscience and are not willing to break international law though. It is quite possible that they have an option to turn up the intensity to counteract environmental factors at the expense of the victims relative safety (moisture will not disperse all of the beam continuously, so it is like the killer bee volume spikes mentioned in a previous video). I am literally just guessing though, you are probably much better to just get inside.
So basically this thing is like walking towards a microwave oven with the door open and the safeties defeated. The microwave is on trying to cook your head. I don’t believe I’d be trying to use a resistive device to protect myself against this kind of force. I think I would walk away and consider an alternative means to nullify the problem.

Looks like the tester didn't have the ear plugs inserted properly. The telltale was the fingers pushing at them. There is a specific way to insert them so they're effective. Also the tester was not wearing the electronic ear muffs properly. They were setting to low on the head. I use the same Howard Leight muffs when working at an indoor gun range with multiple AR15's firing simultaneously and they work very good to keep the sound out. I cannot hear people talking without using the amplification. Note: the stiff ear muff cushions that come with the set were changed to gel pads for a better seal to accommodate safety glasses that made a noticeable difference in attenuation. If you make the adjustments and test again I'd be interested in the results. Thanks for sharing this is really good content!
Great stuff, I loved the idea of concentrating the sound and sending it right back at them! I think the initial tests should have been done blindfolded to prevent the observer from knowing how far past the previous markers he had gone. Just a small amount of bias control while still using only one observer. If you did so, someone may have needed to walk by his side to guide him in a straight line while hopefully wearing a superior form of ear protection. EDIT: Now that I think about it, there's a somewhat simpler way to do this while having an even better bias protection. Have the observer blindfolded and standing stationary while you move the LRAD slowly towards them until they signal pain. This way they have no sense of how close they are to the LRAD - either by sight or by their general sense of how many steps they've taken toward it.

*He pointed at something important I'd like to emphasize:* Shields, especially face shields, can create the danger of a false sense of security. When the protection is very directional, you might get very close to the system, thinking you are safe, but one mishap in the directionality can have you get hit more severely than you would have dared with lesser protection. Thus the best protection for 'casual' use (😄) is a stable, reliable one. The directional stuff is for 'having fun', but beware, you may need to be a team player. Sound you direct away goes somewhere, maybe also somewhere not LRAD. And if more than one person is using directional defenses, the acoustic situation can quickly become tricky and even with a riot shield you might get surprise-hit by someone else's shield. - In general this is an advanced-perception field, considering building walls and such can reflect. The whole terrain is highly relevant. One would have to learn to 'see' sound to do this safely in a lively environment.
The riot shield also keeps sound off your chest/body. Sound energy at that level does interact with your body and may create cumulative effects on your psyche. It would be interesting to differentiate the effects of the sound on the ears vs the body.

@@dancollins1012 In the general theoretical case, absolutely. With a known focal length, it's easy enough to find the ideal shape for your reflector. In practice, the design of an anti-LRAD acoustic retroreflector might be more complicated than, say, the elliptical reflector used to annoy your neighbors, since you can set that up without having to worry too much about the focus's target changing. I might guess that the cylindrical profile of a riot shield might be near ideal, given that it may be difficult for the holder to properly focus the sound. The more distributed "focus" of the cylindrical section would have the effect of a spherical reflector, just in two dimensions instead of three. It therefore has a bigger "sweet spot", which wouldn't be as concentrated, but easier to use. It might also be interesting to go further and examine a flexible design to change the radius of curvature on the fly, but even easier than that and more effective would be getting a bunch of people with shields to line up to focus more of the energy back. :)

There used to be a real time strategy Dune game by Westwood Studios. In it was a unit called the Sonic tank. I've always wondered how such a tank would be like in real life. Now that this has been demonstrated, I can imagine several of these mounted to the front of a tank replacing the barrel cannon, load up some batteries and a parabolic dish. That would be quite an effective ground unit in how it would affect the rules of engagement in modern warfare.

Suggestion: I find foam ear plugs very difficult to use. Instead I use blutac. That gummy stuff you use to temporarily attach posters to walls. It’s cheap, flexible and reusable but does get a bit gunky with ear wax over time. I used this with my Harley, which had straight thru pipes and was very loud. The blutac stuck to the side of my helmet and was always available when I rode.
I'd like to try a Snow saucer that you can get at the hardware store. It would simulate a parabolic reflector for pinpoint accuracy of the operator or anyone near them. I thought about making something like that but better to buy all the late season snow saucers for just a few dollars and distribute them. Would make a decent riot shield and tear gas shield with a forearm and fist-grip handle setup on the front and back for different situations
No real reason to. He could basically touch the device with the shield + headphones, so no real need to test additional protection because you're already at "enough"

I'm watching this because of reports that LRAD has been used by federal police against protesters in Australia. The AFP confirmed they have LRAD deployed for the purpose of long range communication and making announcements/warnings at a distance, but say they haven't used it in 'alert mode' or as a 'sonic weapon'. Despite this claim, protesters at parliament house in Canberra have complained of symptoms related to LRAD use like sudden nausea, painful headaches and confusion. These symptoms have been reported by people of all ages, from teenagers to the elderly. I've yet to see a report of any LRAD system making this kind of high pitched noise, but it's not clear yet if a person actually needs to be able to hear the noise for it to be able to harm them, e.g if an someone who can't hear high pitched / high frequency noises stands right next to an LRAD machine, will it not cause them any harm? If so, it seems like a deaf person would be immune to sonic weapons. Sound waves still cause physical vibrations in the air even if you can't hear them, so I wonder if it might still cause physical harm.

Something to keep in mind: in the air force the jets I operated on could produce sounds in the 150+ dB range. EXTREMELY loud. We would wear the ear foam inserts AND headphones together. That works well.
I used to work in a factory that produced aluminum oxide in a large electric furnace.
When the furnace was being loaded and the electric rods were not yet covered by the raw materials, the noise was so intense that even at over 800 feet away the discomfort in my chest would make me go outside the building to escape the noise.

I used to do that on the ramp at O'hare. You have to insert the foam ones right. Pull your ear open, insert, and let your ear close. There are ones that work much better than the regular foam ones.
More than three decades ago, I owned and operated an archery and firearms shop. I employed the same double hearing protection strategy when shooting Model 53 Smith & Wesson revolvers. I found it an especially wise practice to adopt when shooting from a benchrest while testing handloads. In that circumstance, the shooter tends to be hunched up closer behind the firearm. Moreover, benchrest shooting positions are often protected from the weather under roofs. Those structures reflect the report back down at the shooter in a similar, though less efficient, manner to that demonstrated with the riot shield. For those unfamiliar with the Model 53, it fires the .22 Jet cartridge, which is a .357 Magnum case necked down to .22 caliber--the muzzle report produced is an intensely sharp crack!
Putting earplugs into your ears correctly is actually a skill
I talked to Agent JayZ (jet turbine guy). He says his crew uses foam earplugs under the shop over the head ear protection. I work in noisy environments but we actually overprotect according to our own rules and hearing conservation training material. This too is dangerous if you can't hear somebody tell "stop, that floor tile is open" and the like (computer rooms).

Techniques are similar, but different depending on the shape of the ear canal.
Also pulling the ear back and up, or pulling the skin anterior to the ear & cartilage forward while pressing down opens up the canal for easier insertion.

During my 50 years as a Plumber, I was employed to clean and seal water storage tanks by numerous clients. The sealing medium used was bitumen. Working inside the tank as it was sealed the external noise almost disappeared.
Ever since I discovered this I has painted my ear protectors with bitumen.
This, by my estimation, eliminates another 30% of external noise.

Would that LRAD was a weapon of war. I'd have a few less nightmares.
But, LRAD systems do have a useful mode as well, as a super PA system, which has been used to the public good after a disaster. In one case, trapped survivors attributed the LRAD transmitted "help is on the way" to restoring their hope for rescue, which did eventually arrive.
Remember, help sharing a disaster is help in need of help as well. :/
As for protection from the device, one has to protect the ears, mastoid process and even one's respiratory tract to prevent the noise from reaching its transmission channels to the inner ear. The respiratory tract pathway being at actually destructive levels of sound pressure. A good test would be a quality motorcycle helmet that has hearing protection built in.
Well, that or me set on Angry. I start off 50ish db down, secondary to noise induced hearing loss. Add adrenaline into the equation, well, that's why riot control measures fail with some individuals.

In the Navy we were "required" to use double hearing protection when around jet engines ie: foam plugs as well as head set , gel ear surrounds work better than the foam ones.

A retro reflector is made of three mutually perpendicular surfaces. (inside corner). They are easy to make and could make awesome LRAD armor or shields, because they reflect back at the source. I mention this because flats are probably easier to come by than curved sections.

Just found this after reading about the LRAD abuse in Oz, and my immediate solution was to use a parabolic DISH to redirect the signal back at the device. And you just showed the result of reversing the riot shield. Make a large parabolic shield for obvious protection against objects, and turn it around when someone is using LRAD against you.
Ya, if you made a proper sighting device, since a parabolic deflector is so directional, you could direct the sound exactly where you want it to go.

"Parabolic" is too much curve. A slightly curved surface is MUCH more effective for long distances. You want to be able to reflect meaningfully.

Given the way the test subject kept pressing on his ears with ear plugs, I have to assume they were not properly inserted into the ear canal. You're supposed to roll them into a little worm with your fingers, slide the worm fully into the ear canal, then hold it there until it expands. I also agree that ear plugs + muffs would have been a worthwhile test condition.

There are photos of them using it on the first day and there is footage of another one on the top of a police vehicle the next day, and there is video of the police chief asking for immunity before answering, then he said "yes we used it." It has been approved for use against well behaved Australians protesters.

Ear plugs with ear muff increase protection when shooting. One could also use a parabolic satellite dish, trash can lid, sheet metal, and similar. With many persons reflecting the energy back, it would be like a solar cooker in intensity.
This may have been used on Australian freedom protesters. Question are being asked in our Parliment now as many examples of burn victims are being posted. Kids and families.

Regarding electronic headphones, some of them are frequency-dependent in their protection triggering ("gating," to us audio nerds). Given your LRAD is outputting sound well within the peak speech band, and the headphones are tuned to pass speech through, it could explain why they behaved unexpectedly. Also, I'd love to see an acoustician chime in on this subject of deflecting high SPL. A riot shield has its uses, but it would probably not serve well at a concert, for instance.
Very interesting! I wonder if the combined acoustic pressure of the LRAD and the reflection from the riot shield would be visible on a Schlieren optics setup. It would be cool to see the focal point physically using that.

I would take from this that a satellite television dish could make a good self defence reflector.
I was thinking the same thing but one must be able to see through the barrier while its in front of their head.
Why stop there? Add a microphone and amplifier to it and use your reflecting device to dramatically increase the volume of the sound you reflect back. I bet they turn their silly noises off really quick then.

To think variations of these devices were deployed in parks to keep the kids away is truly disturbing. I was actually targetted by one of these at work which damaged my right ear where I can't hear certain frequencies anymore. Very dangerous device to be used outside of a war zone. @@RichardBaran Philadelphia was using a device called the Mosquito in parks and other places at night to keep kids away while claiming anyone over 25 would be unaffected which is total bs as even though I am in my 30s I can still hear many of the high frequency sounds that only kids are supposed to be able to hear. If I lived in Philadelphia and had one of those anywhere near where I lived I would destroy the dam thing as I hate high frequency sounds especially the ones that are high enough that most others don't hear them.
Immediately went out and got a set of those electronic headphones. Like you mentioned I've always seen them (or at least some similar to them) at the local range and I assumed they just simply cut out noise - I had no idea they amplified ambient noise as well. Super, super cool. Thanks!

At these volumes, ear protection is actually limited by bone conduction. The maximum decrease in noise level does vary with frequency, but that does become the limiting factor. That's obviously not to say that these techniques are effective, just that you do eventually hit a limit that bypasses physical hearing protection.

Interestingly, while your ears can generally hear to 20KHz (less with age, slightly more in select individuals in youth), bone conduction hearing has been demonstrated for higher frequencies up to 150 KHz if memory serves, 50KHz for sure. However the frequency resolution stops at about 16.5 KHz, so test participants could no longer distinguish higher frequency sounds from each other beyond that frequency - actually likely there is no frequency resolution beyond that for any hearing path. Anyway if one were to build a specifically bone conduction targeting LRAD to bypass hearing protection, it seems, it might as well be ultrasonic. Just a random thought i had.
@@none3691 you can only do reverse phase cancellation in small spaces due to the varying locations of peaks and troughs of pressure. That is how active noise cancellation works on headphones

I had a 2nd degree belt in shotokan and the shit they teach you is delusional and you end up deluded into thinking you can stop people with weapons (99% of these students, regardless of belts will end up being stabbed to death or shot to death). And also almost entirely useless in a street fight as well. (Mainly participated in sparring tourney's, personally, never bothered doing kata).

They end up believing they are practically indestructible due to being in martial arts for years, because their minds are filled with toxic levels of overconfidence by their sensei's.
This is all aside from the fact that many modern karate schools brainwash many children into christianity as well. There are barely any secular karate schools anymore, where religion is never talked about.

- try to build a reflector that has a reflective surface similar to the reflectors in catseyes( groups of three surfaces vertical to each other)
that should reflect any sound back to source.
-try to build a bucket/all direction enclosed helmet.
do not forget to allow for airflow...
You don't want a bucket helmet it would just reverberate the sound all around you and it would "catch" a lot of the sound it would otherwise detract. You either want a soft casing helmet to absorb the sound or a deflector that's a good distance from your ears to defract it

I think water droplets are meant to disperse it pretty significantly (it is predicted that it might no function in rain or snow) so some kind of mist machine or portable sprinkler system might be enough to make it effective. that is assuming the users of the ADS have a conscience and are not willing to break international law though. It is quite possible that they have an option to turn up the intensity to counteract environmental factors at the expense of the victims relative safety (moisture will not disperse all of the beam continuously, so it is like the killer bee volume spikes mentioned in a previous video). I am literally just guessing though, you are probably much better to just get inside.
So basically this thing is like walking towards a microwave oven with the door open and the safeties defeated. The microwave is on trying to cook your head. I don’t believe I’d be trying to use a resistive device to protect myself against this kind of force. I think I would walk away and consider an alternative means to nullify the problem.

I find the combination of earplugs and head phones work amazingly well.
Ear buds playing podcasts and high quality headphones are my favourite.
While it does offer better protection, the combination only adds about 5dB of reduction. Definitely a must when the noise level is sustained though.

Looks like the tester didn't have the ear plugs inserted properly. The telltale was the fingers pushing at them. There is a specific way to insert them so they're effective. Also the tester was not wearing the electronic ear muffs properly. They were setting to low on the head. I use the same Howard Leight muffs when working at an indoor gun range with multiple AR15's firing simultaneously and they work very good to keep the sound out. I cannot hear people talking without using the amplification. Note: the stiff ear muff cushions that come with the set were changed to gel pads for a better seal to accommodate safety glasses that made a noticeable difference in attenuation. If you make the adjustments and test again I'd be interested in the results. Thanks for sharing this is really good content!

I think the initial tests should have been done blindfolded to prevent the observer from knowing how far past the previous markers he had gone. Just a small amount of bias control while still using only one observer. If you did so, someone may have needed to walk by his side to guide him in a straight line while hopefully wearing a superior form of ear protection.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, there's a somewhat simpler way to do this while having an even better bias protection. Have the observer blindfolded and standing stationary while you move the LRAD slowly towards them until they signal pain. This way they have no sense of how close they are to the LRAD - either by sight or by their general sense of how many steps they've taken toward it.

Shields, especially face shields, can create the danger of a false sense of security. When the protection is very directional, you might get very close to the system, thinking you are safe, but one mishap in the directionality can have you get hit more severely than you would have dared with lesser protection.
Thus the best protection for 'casual' use (😄) is a stable, reliable one. The directional stuff is for 'having fun', but beware, you may need to be a team player. Sound you direct away goes somewhere, maybe also somewhere not LRAD. And if more than one person is using directional defenses, the acoustic situation can quickly become tricky and even with a riot shield you might get surprise-hit by someone else's shield. - In general this is an advanced-perception field, considering building walls and such can reflect. The whole terrain is highly relevant. One would have to learn to 'see' sound to do this safely in a lively environment.
The riot shield also keeps sound off your chest/body. Sound energy at that level does interact with your body and may create cumulative effects on your psyche. It would be interesting to differentiate the effects of the sound on the ears vs the body.
Can't help but be reminded of the XKCD with the parabolic reflector to take revenge on the loud neighbours.
Elliptical, a parabolic would just make a more constant level of sound, not focus it to a point.

My take on the Tech Ingredients video is that as the assistant got vey close to the LRAD, the source appears wide and the LRAD operator 'target' is still a point focus, thus suiting a paraboloid reflector. Would we say the ideal conic section reflector considers the relative scale between the width of the source and distance between focal points?
@@dancollins1012 In the general theoretical case, absolutely. With a known focal length, it's easy enough to find the ideal shape for your reflector.
In practice, the design of an anti-LRAD acoustic retroreflector might be more complicated than, say, the elliptical reflector used to annoy your neighbors, since you can set that up without having to worry too much about the focus's target changing. I might guess that the cylindrical profile of a riot shield might be near ideal, given that it may be difficult for the holder to properly focus the sound. The more distributed "focus" of the cylindrical section would have the effect of a spherical reflector, just in two dimensions instead of three. It therefore has a bigger "sweet spot", which wouldn't be as concentrated, but easier to use. It might also be interesting to go further and examine a flexible design to change the radius of curvature on the fly, but even easier than that and more effective would be getting a bunch of people with shields to line up to focus more of the energy back. :)

There used to be a real time strategy Dune game by Westwood Studios. In it was a unit called the Sonic tank. I've always wondered how such a tank would be like in real life. Now that this has been demonstrated, I can imagine several of these mounted to the front of a tank replacing the barrel cannon, load up some batteries and a parabolic dish. That would be quite an effective ground unit in how it would affect the rules of engagement in modern warfare.

Suggestion: I find foam ear plugs very difficult to use. Instead I use blutac. That gummy stuff you use to temporarily attach posters to walls. It’s cheap, flexible and reusable but does get a bit gunky with ear wax over time. I used this with my Harley, which had straight thru pipes and was very loud. The blutac stuck to the side of my helmet and was always available when I rode.
I'd like to try a Snow saucer that you can get at the hardware store. It would simulate a parabolic reflector for pinpoint accuracy of the operator or anyone near them. I thought about making something like that but better to buy all the late season snow saucers for just a few dollars and distribute them. Would make a decent riot shield and tear gas shield with a forearm and fist-grip handle setup on the front and back for different situations

I'm watching this because of reports that LRAD has been used by federal police against protesters in Australia. The AFP confirmed they have LRAD deployed for the purpose of long range communication and making announcements/warnings at a distance, but say they haven't used it in 'alert mode' or as a 'sonic weapon'. Despite this claim, protesters at parliament house in Canberra have complained of symptoms related to LRAD use like sudden nausea, painful headaches and confusion. These symptoms have been reported by people of all ages, from teenagers to the elderly.
I've yet to see a report of any LRAD system making this kind of high pitched noise, but it's not clear yet if a person actually needs to be able to hear the noise for it to be able to harm them, e.g if an someone who can't hear high pitched / high frequency noises stands right next to an LRAD machine, will it not cause them any harm? If so, it seems like a deaf person would be immune to sonic weapons. Sound waves still cause physical vibrations in the air even if you can't hear them, so I wonder if it might still cause physical harm.
