  • It's been a while since I've posted a front porch video, and since my heart is breaking over America I wanted to post the Black National Anthem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
It was written in 1899 by author and activist James Weldon Johnson who wrote the words as a poem which his brother, John, then wrote the music for. Booker T. Washington endorsed it in 1905, and in 1919 it became the official song of the NAACP. It was first performed in 1900 at a segregated school in Jacksonville, FL by a group of 500 children celebrating the anniversary of the birth of Lincoln.
The last lines of the first stanza read:
Facing the rising sun of a new day begun
Let us march on 'til victory is won.
