Who else came here after listening to Jim Downey on Conan O’Brien needs a friend?
😂😂😂😂😂 here
Mea culpa
I mean I come back to this sketch every year or two anyway, but yes Conan sent me back here today.
Hi team!
Yup
“Their computers picked up my mistake right away”, Kevin Nealon’s delivery is perfect
Kevin Nealon’s ability to be funny without actually doing anything funny himself - no punchline, no silly voice, no costume, no outrageous premise - is actually quite genius.
@@119Agent I'm reminded of his dead seriousness in the infamous Chip N Dale's skit when he said "We wish we could pick both of you, but we simply can't.......we're Chip n Dales." 😂
That has always been one of my favorite deliveries. Absolutely hilarious writing and acting!!
The one guy in the audience who gets the entire premise right away is a legend.
That laugh is definitely legendary!
Kind of sounded like Conan
No he isnt
Sounded like Conan
That cackle is Conan for sure!!
Jim Downey is genius. He wrote some of the best sketches and even got to feature in this one.
Every podcast by an ex-SNL cast member or writer pays homage at some point to Downey. He is a legend.
I remember watching this as a kid and laughing so hard that it's people doing the basics of their job. Once I heard Jim talk to Conan about how he loves the concept of deliberately wasting someone's time, it all makes sense.
If you haven't seen Conan Needs A Friend with Jim Downey - you totally should because he talks about this sketch.
0:35 I just love the line "well their computer picked up my mistake right away". Perfectly written and Nealon delivered it flawlessly. It's small details like this that makes Downey a writing genius.
"The computers picked up my mistake right away" -best sketch EVER!!!
"We're not going to give you two thousand nickles" I remember cracking up at that way back when.
... unless that meets your particular change needs.
This is one of the funniest skits I think I've ever seen on SNL
It's brilliant on its own, but it was even better when it was new, because it is a direct parody of some real bank ads with the same construction of people speaking in front of an all black background.
Yikes.
It’s clever. It’s sophisticated. It’s smart. It’s mocking the old 1987 Citibank Commercials which had testimonials in a dark lit background. The joke is that CityWide’s main business is making change through any means especially asinine ones like Exchanging Crumbled up $1 bills with flat intact ones or exchanging $100 for 100,000 pennies. These are ridiculous requests, but Citywide handles them as a Bank and is proud to admit they do.
@@plawson8577 What kills me is that exchanging a crumpled up bill for a fresh one is a "special request" that can be filled "often in the same day."
Perfect parody of a (then) existing commercial series. Downey’s sincerity is perfect and makes it work.
This silly little gag is one of the SNL bits that I’ve remembered & loved for many years. Thanks Jim Downey!
Here from Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend, September 2023. Classic 😅
I can't tell you how many times I quoted this sketch through high school! CLASSIC
One of my very favorite sketches in the history of SNL. Jim Downey wrote it for Kevin Nealon, but he was so excited by it that Nealon told him he should play the part himself, and it works perfectly. And Nealon gets the best line, with "Well, their computers picked up my mistake right away." Priceless.
Jim Downey is brilliant
He's so sincere! 😂
Such a simple concept for a skit, but still manages to be hilarious.
Thank you for letting Canadians see this , it used to be so difficult to find this sketch!
Here after hearing him on Conan podcast and they mentioned this sketch.
Might as well be a Tim & Eric sketch, what a hidden gem. "We're not gonna give you two thousand nickels. Unless you want that"
Jim Downey is funny and talented so I highly doubt this could be mistaken for a Tim & Eric sketch.
The amount of people who've been brainwashed into thinking Tim & Eric invented everything comedic is mind boggling.
Tim & Eric are kind of like a high school drama class version of a Jim Downey sketch from the 80’s.
@@119Agent 100%. But I think people are missing the point, it’s saying writing this good will always be relevant. If there was another big sketch group in 10 years I’d say them etc…
I swear you can hear Conan laughing. His laugh is unmistakable. You can first hear it around the 0:11 mark.
Man, such a classic. SNL ads are the best
Honestly this could have gone on for five more minutes and it only would have gotten better
Hey, that's the "I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul" guy from Billy Madison!
Duuuude, I was wondering why he looked so familiar.
Jim Downey.....he was a crucial part of the writing staff for a very long time. I believe Norm Macdonald's Weekend Update was written virtually entirely by Norm and Jim.
The fact that it's played straight is what sells it.
This is the most comedy writer sketch and I love it
They cut the best line, “people ask us how do we make a profit and it’s simple...volume”.
Yesss, wtf!
That quote is in the 2nd citywide bank commercial.
ruclips.net/video/KodqIPMbyUg/видео.html
Thank you (I was so looking forward to that line)! 🤙
It’s in the second skit: ruclips.net/video/KodqIPMbyUg/видео.htmlsi=_qtauEk-qjl5HSE3
2000 nickels, this is the funniest from the SNL crew...I remembered this from years ago and was glad it was uploaded...will put this on my personal list when I need a good laff...it's funnee to me because I sometimes take the bus...
Downey is a word genius. "Nickel" really is the funniest sounding coin.
I'm pretty shure that's Conan laughing his ass off at the beginning.
"Their computers picked up my mistake right away..."
Conan Obrien needs a friend sent me
Who else is here from Drew?
Meeeeeee
Me
Drew? Drew gooden? Popular commentary RUclipsr drew gooden? Nope. I’m not
Same hahaha just stumbled on it then lead me here and happier for it
Yep
As always and as usual, TY for all your content contributions…just appreciating
This is just too fucking good. Reading Odenkirk's autobiography brought me here. It definitely looks like something that would have fit perfectly on Mr. Show.
Who else is here from Conan needs a Friend interview w Jim Downey? 😂
Who
Me! Such a good episode. I hope he has Jim on again soon.
Loved this.
Jim Downey is a national treasure.
"We will give you the change equal to the amount of money that you want change for."
Bid bag Jim!
Conan brought me here. I remember this sketch! Truly a classic.
I actually remember watching this live. I kind of got the first exchange comment, but after the second I was hooked in😂😂😂😂😂
Still my favorite!
"We're not going to give the change you don't want." Absolutely brilliant
“How do we make money? Volume.”
My favorite SNL commercial
Conan send me here
Classic
"We can give you twenty-five twos."
I wish it was longer
I came here from Conan's podcast.
Change you can believe in, usually the same day
I award this sketch no points, and may God have mercy on its soul.
Obscure question. The guy who is representing the bank, was he the same guy in Dirty Work, as the homeless former employee of the movie's antagonist who always has his heartfelt testimonials cut off?
Yes his name is Jim Downey. Legendary writer from SNL he wrote the weekend update with Norm. He is also the principal in Billy Madison.
@@umphreak6979 I appreciate that. Thank you.
When I first saw this back in the day, I could have sworn there was line where they said, "And people ask us how we can make money doing this. And I just tell them, 'Volume.' "
That’s in the part 2 sketch
Left off the best line. “How we make money? Volume.”
This has to be one of Odenkirk's works, right?
2 months late but I believe this was written by Jim Downey who’s in the commercial!
I'm pretty sure Downey wouldn't be in this so prominently if he didn't write it.
Wow, I totally remember this now from when it was new! The second guy is Robert Downey Jr's half-uncle Jim Downey who wrote it.
How can one have a "half-uncle" since an uncle would be the brother of one of your two parents?
@@scottjohnson7248 A half-uncle means that one of his parents is not a grandparent of yours. In other words, he's a half-brother of one of your parents.
Everybody? It is amazing how I remember every sketch he was ever in but never recalled it was him in the role.
That's Conan's cackle for sure 🤣
Thank youi, Drew Gooden.
"People ask, How do you make money doing this? The answer is simple. Volume."
25 2s lol
This is great but I think only Jim downy could make this work
It gets funnier the more you watch it
TEAM COCO!!
Always thought this was a Duck’s Breath Mystery Theater original… huh.
James Downey (Billy Madison principal).
Still hilarious!
Kevin Nealon, take a bow.
Was just reminded of this commercial parody while reading Bob Odenkirk’s excellent book.
Btw who played McElroy?
That's Jim Downy, long time writer. You might recognize him as Andy Samberg's Dad and Jonah Hill's boyfriend.
First Citywide knows change.
Who’s here because of Drew Gooden?
When I was watching his vid I saw thos and I cracked up just thinking about 2000 nickels
I’m a little
Stuff like this seems like the starting place for Tim Heidecker
I can’t count the amount of poor tellers who have had to suffer my complaints the last 30 years that, well, they gave me my money, but they were no First Citywide. Sorry tellers of the world, but it lightened my day.
Downey!
Jim Downey is so fucking funny
How do they make a profit ? One word, volume.
Here after The Problem With Jon Stewart podcast
That just reeks of bob odenkirk
The show needs to be like this again... so stupid it's funny.
I feel like this was written by Conan or Bob Oedenkirk considering they were on staff at the time and it’s their perfect type of weird
Written by James Downey, who plays the bank representative.
@@theBaron0530 thank you for that info! Makes it better haha
Downey talked about this on Conan's podcast. How his over explaining the process was so annoying and funny. Originally Nealon was going to run the bank, but eventually they decided Downey should do it.
I bet these guys won't give me two twenties and a ten for my fifty
We're not going to give you 2000 nickels.. lmao
Unless that meets your specific change requirements
There was another part with Phil Hartman…
and how do we make our money?.....volume, volume, volume
Is that what Jim Downey used to look like!? I don't believe it.
Who is here from Drew? This is 👩🍳 💋
Twenty-five twos
How come I don't get it? What are they making fun of here - a real bank?
I have no idea why I find this so funny. I think it's because they're making such a massive deal out of such a trivial and historically almost incidental function of a bank.
@@solo1y thats exactly it. Its hilarious because its such an obvious function of a bank! haha love this
It was a parody of these commercials from 1988 ruclips.net/video/8NRDbN0FHEU/видео.html
Over 30 years later, it still holds up as a parody of every company that takes its mission statement seriously
Yes, it was a parody of a specific commercial = people giving testimonials about a bank with the same black background, etc. I don't remember which bank it was.
I know this is a little out there, but if I come in to Citywide with a $50 bill, can they give me four 10s, one 5, three singles, five dimes, ten nickels, two quarters, and fifty pennies?
they do handle special requests like that if you ask. It seems like they can usually process them the same day too.
Somebody should delete the laugh track so that I could use this for my nefarious ends
Hey, so SNL CAN be funny!
its not universally bad or good, its got good bits and bad ones
A long long time ago
Yeah, a sh*tload of us came from Conan's podcast.
When SNL ads were funnier.
funny how this aged, banks can't really even do this anymore
C'mon SNL spell the title of your own sketch right!
also, this was a clear-cut rip-off of of the snl classic First Citywide skit….CRINGE
The laugh track ruins this tbh
It’s a live studio audience
@@jpt7342 cool. it ruins this tbh
Nah.
"We will give you the change equal to the amount of money that you want change for."
