How to get rid of houseplant gnats (for good!)

- I finally found something that got rid of my houseplant gnats (fungus gnats) and is super easy to use: gnatrol. Best of all, it’s organic, safe to use around pets, and really affordable. I wish I had known about it earlier on in my house plant journey because fungus gnats are so annoying and I spent a lot of time fighting them until I found this solution.
I tried a bunch of fungus gnat killing solutions, and in the video, I talk about why the other solutions like mosquito bits, soil drenches, and sticky traps didn’t work for me. I also talk about how I used gnatrol to clear the initial infestation and how I use it for preventative care.

I am not sponsored by Organic BTI and this video is also not sponsored. I don’t get anything from anyone using this code, I reached out to get a code purely to benefit my lovely plant community :)

I post more regularly about rare plants on my IG, @youriplant :) Наука
I watch a lot of videos on many subjects and I never leave a comment. I HAD a horrible gnat infestation in about 30 plants. Two of the infestations were in big pots and I could hit the pot and they would come running out. It was disgusting. It affected my home, my mood and it was driving me MAD! I didn't want to get rid of all my plants so I got on the internet as most of us do these days, lol. I found something that said put cut up white potatoes on top of the soil. I had some potatoes so I tried that. Nothing happened to the gnats. I was about to buy some sand and stones to try but then I went to RUclips ( I should have done that first). I watched about 6 or 7 videos and I decided to try your suggestion and the suggestion to use Neem cakes. I used the Gnatrol 1st and after about 3 feedings I started to see a difference. I was so happy. It took about 3 weeks for me to not see a gnat in my apartment. I am so appreciative of you for sharing this information. The product is a little pricey in my opinion but it was worth every penny. I did use the code. I could have spent a lot more money trying different things that don't work. I had already wasted money buying something from the local plant store. I said all of that to say thank you. This video saved my precious plants, my time and my money and my mind lol. I would have been so hurt if I had the throw my plants out. I had to write a comment to you because the Gnatrol did the job. Thank you
PS That was a lot for someone that doesn't write comments 🙂.
I'm so happy this was helpful for you!! Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment
I hung plant zap lites around my plants. THEY STARTED ZAPPING GNATS RIGHT AWAY! I left them up 2 months till I heard no more zaps! Took them down and gnat free over a year now! Dont forget to empty the dead ones from the bottom trays! Good Luck! Rev. J. 😊
Hi, greetings from Brazil, the fact that the tea was not effective was because you heated the water, it contains Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria, I believe that the hot water would have killed this bacteria that is extremely harmful to the larvae of the fungus gnatas, if you do it again I recommend using tap water.
I was going to leave the same comment re the boiling of the water being counter productive bc it likely killed the bacteria. Not sure why you’re recommending tap water though? I’ve been doing MB for prob 6 weeks and use either filtered or distilled.
One thing I noticed about the Gnatrol that nobody has mentioned is that it contains 37.4% of the active ingredient "Bti" and mosquito bits contain the same active ingredient but they only contain 2.86% of the Bti. That is a big deal and probably why Gnatrol works so much better as well as being easier to use. Thank you for posting this video! Best fungus gnat solution available and organic!
new subscriber!:) I’ve been dealing with this problem every summer and never found a permanent solution and maybe I just found it!! Thank you queen!!!
ahh hope this works for you! i've been gnat free since i started using it :)
You've given me hope. Recently, I started a balcony vegetable garden. The soil I bought contained fungus gnats, which not only infested the big pots containing summer squash, beans, and okra, but also my house plants, which I had put outside during the summertime to enjoy the natural light, wind and rain. Thanks for the discount code.
Sorry to hear that, I’ve had really bad luck with soil containing fungus gnats too! Hope this helps!!
Did this treatment completely eradicate the gnats, or did it just reduce the gnats?
After reading thru comments, I will share my experience. I had a growing problem with fungus Knats and decided on trying neem cake. I bought Eden Grow Max Organic Blended Neem Cake. 3 lbs for $15. At Amazon. It is rated 3-1-1 and not harmful for beneficials. I used one scoop (approx 1 1/2 tbsp) to gal of water. Dissolves in water (not totally and not quickly). and watered with this. In a weeks time 90 %. gone. Another week all gone. Amazing.
Got this and it’s the ONLY thing has worked for me. Thank you for the recommendation!!
Omg this is awesome! I've been doing the mosquito bit tea for a while and while I feel like it did reduce the numbers of gnats largely, I still had quite a few to deal with so I'll be switching over to this new product asap!! Thanks for the helpful video!
This is going to be so much better than mosquito bit tea!! Keep me posted :)
Thanks for the info and promo code! I ordered it and will give it a try. ^_^
Oh Lord every time I watch a new video there’s always yet another product to go by and try. I’m beyond weary.
It does not say that on mosiquito bits to sprinkle it on top. People must be repeating each other and NOT READING THE PACKAGE. It says to put/soak it water, drain the bits and then water...repeat for 3 weeks. The new product you are recommending is the same as mosquito bits. It’s ground up mosquito bits. You can grind up the mosquito bits you already have and mix it into the soil. The larva feed off the organic matter in the soil but it will not kill the adults because they don’t feed on that.
Hi Sacha! Yes, it’s the same active bacteria in both gnatrol and mosquito bits, but I mention in my video that making the mosquito bit “tea” is time consuming and the gnatrol product has been more convenient for me to use. Gnatrol is not the same as mosquito bits because the application mechanism is different (fewer steps).
Thank you, thank you, thank you! You saved my plants and my sanity!
Just watched this video. I'm subscribing and following now because your cat magically appeared on the table when you removed the package. I am rolling on the floor. lol. I hope they got treats after this video. Thank you for making this video.
Thank you for this video. I just ordered and received neem soil. I sprinkled a generous amount over the top of all of my plants and mixed it in and then watered the soil. I’ll give it time to work and if it doesn’t I will try your method. Unfortunately this neem product smells up my house. But the knats are more annoying.
Thank you so much for a very helpful video! New subscriber here!❤
Thank you for your video. I attempted to go to the website but for some reason I could not see the bag or product you were talking about in your video.
What promo code do I use to become your buddy? :3
Great advice, finally got around to finishing the video haha
Will order some soon!
Thank you just what I wanted to know 👍
Ok so thanks so much for such an informative video that was much needed 😭😭😭 I seen these and since they were kinda pricey only purchased the Mosquito Bits. Anyway I’m feeling extremely overwhelmed as I also have tons of plants!!🙈 I can manage the small plants but I do have 3 larger plants and I’ve looked all over RUclips etc. I noticed you have large plants behind you. So did you do the same for the larger plants. I was going to repot and disinfect roots but if it’s easier to use this, I’d rather spray them with this. I’m just sooo drained at this point! These gnats are driving me INSANE!!😭😭🙈🙈🥴🥴
Thank you so much!
Hi Youri, already got used to fungus gnats always flying around..Lol...Thanks for the tip.Cheers from UK
Hahaha I mean if you think you'll miss them... you don't need to use this product ;)
Until you have thousands of the buggers and they've killed your seedlings
On your video could you please tell me what size bag the green one is?
What do u do with the leftovers water with the power thing?
Hi, my problem is that it's my Sansevierias that have gnats. I can apply once, but if I keep watering frequently as recommended, my Snake Plants could rot.
Thank you! I saw it from another video. Mosquito bits - tons of work.
She’s doing it incorrectly though. The water should not be hot! Boiling actually kills the bacteria. Just soak it in room temp water for 30-60 minutes.
Hi Youri - when you add the gnatrol to your water, do you also add plant food? Is that a bad idea? Wonder if the bacteria will eat the plant food instead of the larvae…
Hi, can you send me the link to the actual product. I went to the website and didn't see the actual packaging you purchsaed. Thanks!
It looks like this is no longer a website. Are you ordering this somewhere else, or have you switch to another message
What is the name of the powder form?
Hi, thanks for the best advice. Do you think sprinkling the powder onto soil and leaving? Will this help?
It's a shame 😔 not available here in UK. Cannot order through Amazon too as it does not show. The website does not work too.
Hi there
I can’t find the website
Thank you! I can find one from Europa ? Because i live in Belgium!
We’re can I get it from
Is this product safe for food baring plants?
I found that using surface spray on the outside of the pot , I haven’t had a gnat for awhile ,I redo it every month or so instead of these expensive products ,I mean give it a try
thanks
How much is it
I just ordered 🤞🏼
Hope it helps!!
Mosquito bits did work for me in but grow tent. BUT...mine molded as well, a lot of mold! It was disgusting. I stuck it out because the gnats were so bad & after a couple weeks they were gone. But it was so nasty. I never want to do it again. I’ll definitely be getting some gnatrol. Thx for the tip!
That’s exactly what happened to me!! Hope you find better luck with the gnatrol!
I checked the website, it seems to be no longer active
I made my tea with the bits AND neem cake powder together. I was soo overloaded with gnats in my tomato plants that I went cray-zay with the research and online ordering. I got the little sticky things and the gnatrol to but my orders were coming in on different dates (expected) so I figured I would try whatever came first. I haven't even opened my gnatrol because the double dose tea worked like overnight!!!!!
I opted for MB bc I could not handle the smell of Neem, but after MB failed, i succumbed to ordering Neem Cake, and I just opened it this morning and it smells like a barn full of fresh manure. 😩
Just bought some to try! 😁Thank you!
Hope it works for you Laura!!
@@youriplant Luckily I only had a small infestation on a few plants. I had tried everything under the sun to get rid of them. But nothing worked! So far on my 2nd week using this product and they seem to be completely gone!🎉💃 Do you continue to use the solution on your plants regardless of a gnat problem or do you stop using it when the problem is resolved? I forget if you mentioned this in your video.
@@Maeb143 That's awesome to hear that the product seems to be working for you!! I still add gnatrol to my water as a preventative measure (even though I no longer see gnats flying around) but I use half of what they suggest in the instructions.
@@youriplant Perfect! That is what I'll do! Thank you 😊
I’ve been using MB for about 6 weeks with mixed results, but I wanted to say that you should not use hot water! Boiling water actually kills the bacteria! Room temp water is fine, and it only needs to be soaked 30-60 minutes- per the company itself. I’m very curious as to the difference between the 2 products, as they are both BTI. The medium in MB is corn. (that’s why it molds when you sprinkle it on top) I’ll have to read up on Gnatrol.
My own population of FG has been a very stressful rollercoaster, and now on top of it, out of the blue i suddenly have soil mites - which is creepier than FG, even tho they’re supposedly beneficial. I’m pretty much at my end here with plants… 😩
Hi i want ask you do you know any plateforme ship the avocado trees ? I want buy Indonesian varieties but i don't know who and where and how cost the shipping and time.. i hope you help me
Hi there, unfortunately I have no idea and am unable to help. Good luck!
💚
So helpful advice! Thank you Thank you! :)
What is the name of the website because I can’t find it and where is the code
Hi Nancy, the information is in my video details! Let me know if you’re still having trouble finding it
Hi, Thanks for this information, I will give this product a try. But my question is; can I mix it with my water soluble fertilizer feedings?
Hi Tina! I mix a lot of things in my water, including the gnatrol product and water soluble fertilizer. I haven't done a lot of research into how they might interact, but I've been able to use both with every watering without any noticeable issues.
when she opened the first bag I thought that's how much came in it
I know about the mosquito bits. I haven't used them and I have a serious problem. I mean I'm in the upper peninsula of Michigan. there is no short of 9 ft of snow outside right now. and my two very big house plans are loaded with fungus gnats I have been battling them. and one of them I have cactuses that's the funny part. I pulled all the cactuses. in an act of desperation. I sterilize the soil in my oven and wash the cactuses. it didn't last long. and now I'm infested again. I've use peroxide. I've used neem oil. I've used peroxide with water. nothing has been a solution to these fungus gnats. the season is very short for them in the upper peninsula and it's overwhelming in the month of August. but the one thing I learned about mosquito bits is that you do if you lay it on top of the soil fungisol grow on it cuz it's made of natural stuff. it's perfect environment for fungus. So you make it to you but you can't use boiling water. because what's in it is a bacteria that you're trying to start. So you don't want to kill that. You want to keep that at room temperature and then take some warm water and just soak it. soak it for about 3 days strain it. I don't know the effectiveness of decks I've never tried it
Hi. I’ve been using MB for about 6 weeks with mixed results, and it’s true that her boiling water likely killed the bacteria, but you’re letting yours soak for way too long. It only requires 30-60 minutes, and per the company itself, it’s no longer even good after 48 hours. (and from my understanding, it doesn’t even remain active in the soil for very long 😞)
What worked for me (had a TON of the lighters flying around, some I even swallowed! ), was to dispose of the top 2 to 3 inches of soil (after not watering for as long as possible), putting in a mixture of sand and soil, and a top layer of 1 inch of sand. So far, after having 5 sticky pads on one plant FULL in one day, the pads have caught 7 gnats in 2 days from ALL plants.
Well, ty but I went to order some and its not available now.
I just checked the website and it looks like it's in stock :)
Hello, would like if you did a tour of your houseplants!
Hi Joanna! I have a tour in my Houseplant Vlog #3 but I’ll probably do an update soon!
@@youriplant Awesome! You're one of the only plant RUclips channels I've watched most of the videos, but not the Vlogs. I'll be sure to check that out so I can swoon.
Can you use it for orchids too?
I believe this product should be okay for all plants, including orchids!
Get them.. 😊
Thank you Youri! I just ordered mine ☺️ can't wait to never get a gnat in the face again lol
Hi Hollie haha. Ty for leaving a comment, keep me posted!!!
Did it work?
This works best. Be consistent and you will have 0 gnats using gnatrol.
Or buy BTI liquid. Even easier.
Great video and info.
That website isnt valid...
well yeah it's over $100. and it's not going to prevent them. and that big of a treatment is probably not going to work any better than any other treatment that killed all the nets and its eggs. The problem with Matt's they keep returning. where they come from I have no clue
Mine came from inside bags of organic potting mix. 😞
simple fix......water glass.....in it one ounce apple cider vinegar ...small shot of dish soap.....put it inside, outside or both.....fills with hundreds of nats daily.......done callapse reproduction
That doesn’t kill the eggs and babies though
I’ve tried this, not one gnat. I’ve found more in plain water than I did in the Apple cider vinegar. I don’t know why, others have said it works too.
These are fungus gnats, not fruit flies. That does not work on fungus gnats whatsoever
Could you send me all the information, name of product, n website
