How to get rid of houseplant gnats (for good!)

  • I finally found something that got rid of my houseplant gnats (fungus gnats) and is super easy to use: gnatrol. Best of all, it’s organic, safe to use around pets, and really affordable. I wish I had known about it earlier on in my house plant journey because fungus gnats are so annoying and I spent a lot of time fighting them until I found this solution.
    I tried a bunch of fungus gnat killing solutions, and in the video, I talk about why the other solutions like mosquito bits, soil drenches, and sticky traps didn’t work for me. I also talk about how I used gnatrol to clear the initial infestation and how I use it for preventative care.
    www.organicbti.com
    You can use code ‘youriplant5’ for 5% off.
    I am not sponsored by Organic BTI and this video is also not sponsored. I don’t get anything from anyone using this code, I reached out to get a code purely to benefit my lovely plant community :)
    If you’re curious about the fungus gnat life cycle, you can read this for more info: ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn....
    I post more regularly about rare plants on my IG, @youriplant :)

    I watch a lot of videos on many subjects and I never leave a comment. I HAD a horrible gnat infestation in about 30 plants. Two of the infestations were in big pots and I could hit the pot and they would come running out. It was disgusting. It affected my home, my mood and it was driving me MAD! I didn't want to get rid of all my plants so I got on the internet as most of us do these days, lol. I found something that said put cut up white potatoes on top of the soil. I had some potatoes so I tried that. Nothing happened to the gnats. I was about to buy some sand and stones to try but then I went to RUclips ( I should have done that first). I watched about 6 or 7 videos and I decided to try your suggestion and the suggestion to use Neem cakes. I used the Gnatrol 1st and after about 3 feedings I started to see a difference. I was so happy. It took about 3 weeks for me to not see a gnat in my apartment. I am so appreciative of you for sharing this information. The product is a little pricey in my opinion but it was worth every penny. I did use the code. I could have spent a lot more money trying different things that don't work. I had already wasted money buying something from the local plant store. I said all of that to say thank you. This video saved my precious plants, my time and my money and my mind lol. I would have been so hurt if I had the throw my plants out. I had to write a comment to you because the Gnatrol did the job. Thank you
    PS That was a lot for someone that doesn't write comments 🙂.

    Hi, greetings from Brazil, the fact that the tea was not effective was because you heated the water, it contains Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria, I believe that the hot water would have killed this bacteria that is extremely harmful to the larvae of the fungus gnatas, if you do it again I recommend using tap water.

    • @rainedyani8505
      @rainedyani8505 Год назад +3

      I was going to leave the same comment re the boiling of the water being counter productive bc it likely killed the bacteria. Not sure why you’re recommending tap water though? I’ve been doing MB for prob 6 weeks and use either filtered or distilled.

    One thing I noticed about the Gnatrol that nobody has mentioned is that it contains 37.4% of the active ingredient "Bti" and mosquito bits contain the same active ingredient but they only contain 2.86% of the Bti. That is a big deal and probably why Gnatrol works so much better as well as being easier to use. Thank you for posting this video! Best fungus gnat solution available and organic!

    You've given me hope. Recently, I started a balcony vegetable garden. The soil I bought contained fungus gnats, which not only infested the big pots containing summer squash, beans, and okra, but also my house plants, which I had put outside during the summertime to enjoy the natural light, wind and rain. Thanks for the discount code.

    After reading thru comments, I will share my experience. I had a growing problem with fungus Knats and decided on trying neem cake. I bought Eden Grow Max Organic Blended Neem Cake. 3 lbs for $15. At Amazon. It is rated 3-1-1 and not harmful for beneficials. I used one scoop (approx 1 1/2 tbsp) to gal of water. Dissolves in water (not totally and not quickly). and watered with this. In a weeks time 90 %. gone. Another week all gone. Amazing.

    It does not say that on mosiquito bits to sprinkle it on top. People must be repeating each other and NOT READING THE PACKAGE. It says to put/soak it water, drain the bits and then water...repeat for 3 weeks. The new product you are recommending is the same as mosquito bits. It’s ground up mosquito bits. You can grind up the mosquito bits you already have and mix it into the soil. The larva feed off the organic matter in the soil but it will not kill the adults because they don’t feed on that.

    • @youriplant
      @youriplant  3 года назад +4

      Hi Sacha! Yes, it’s the same active bacteria in both gnatrol and mosquito bits, but I mention in my video that making the mosquito bit “tea” is time consuming and the gnatrol product has been more convenient for me to use. Gnatrol is not the same as mosquito bits because the application mechanism is different (fewer steps).

Anyway I’m feeling extremely overwhelmed as I also have tons of plants!!🙈 I can manage the small plants but I do have 3 larger plants and I’ve looked all over RUclips etc. I noticed you have large plants behind you. So did you do the same for the larger plants. I was going to repot and disinfect roots but if it’s easier to use this, I’d rather spray them with this. I’m just sooo drained at this point! These gnats are driving me INSANE!!😭😭🙈🙈🥴🥴

    I’ve been using MB for about 6 weeks with mixed results, but I wanted to say that you should not use hot water! Boiling water actually kills the bacteria! Room temp water is fine, and it only needs to be soaked 30-60 minutes- per the company itself. I’m very curious as to the difference between the 2 products, as they are both BTI. The medium in MB is corn. (that’s why it molds when you sprinkle it on top) I’ll have to read up on Gnatrol.
    My own population of FG has been a very stressful rollercoaster, and now on top of it, out of the blue i suddenly have soil mites - which is creepier than FG, even tho they’re supposedly beneficial. I’m pretty much at my end here with plants… 😩

    I know about the mosquito bits. I haven't used them and I have a serious problem. I mean I'm in the upper peninsula of Michigan. there is no short of 9 ft of snow outside right now. and my two very big house plans are loaded with fungus gnats I have been battling them. and one of them I have cactuses that's the funny part. I pulled all the cactuses. in an act of desperation. I sterilize the soil in my oven and wash the cactuses. it didn't last long. and now I'm infested again. I've use peroxide. I've used neem oil. I've used peroxide with water. nothing has been a solution to these fungus gnats. the season is very short for them in the upper peninsula and it's overwhelming in the month of August. but the one thing I learned about mosquito bits is that you do if you lay it on top of the soil fungisol grow on it cuz it's made of natural stuff. it's perfect environment for fungus. So you make it to you but you can't use boiling water. because what's in it is a bacteria that you're trying to start. So you don't want to kill that. You want to keep that at room temperature and then take some warm water and just soak it. soak it for about 3 days strain it. I don't know the effectiveness of decks I've never tried it

    • @rainedyani8505
      @rainedyani8505 Год назад

      Hi. I’ve been using MB for about 6 weeks with mixed results, and it’s true that her boiling water likely killed the bacteria, but you’re letting yours soak for way too long. It only requires 30-60 minutes, and per the company itself, it’s no longer even good after 48 hours. (and from my understanding, it doesn’t even remain active in the soil for very long 😞)

      What worked for me (had a TON of the lighters flying around, some I even swallowed! ), was to dispose of the top 2 to 3 inches of soil (after not watering for as long as possible), putting in a mixture of sand and soil, and a top layer of 1 inch of sand. So far, after having 5 sticky pads on one plant FULL in one day, the pads have caught 7 gnats in 2 days from ALL plants.
