Long Island New York, I had a crush on Stanley Jordan's sister. So I went to her house and Stanley answered the door. I did not know him at the time. He was surprised that a guy came over to see his sister, because this has never happened before, he stated. Stanley invited me in and took me up to his room because his sister was not at home. He had a stack up to the ceiling. He broke out the voice-corder and began to play. After the song he asked me how did I like it. I said it was alright. I just wanted to see his sister. He and his dad invited me to fly in a plane that his dad would pilot. I said no, I was afraid. This is where music comes from, the real Stanley Jordan!!!

Great interview. I've been listening to this guy since I saw him on TV at the Montreau Jazz Festival in the early 90s and he blew me away with his rendition of Stairway To Heaven. Fantastic guitarist.
Listen carefully to what Stanley says at the 17:15 mark - not THAT is a musician. He doesn't think of showcasing his amazing CHOPS, but is focused on how can he contribute on his instrument to help make the song and overall soundscape better. There are so many talented guitarists who do not understand that making great music is not about showcasing one's chops and making your guitar dominate the soundscape - as that approach is far more about showmanship than it is musicianship. REALLY great chops should always enhance the music in a supporting role, even during passages where one's instrument has a prominent position in the song.
+marie watson Idk, musicians and especially the eras when he was young were pretty androgynous/flamboyant. The guy probably just always wanted to wear the long hair and feels younger dressing glamy. Even if he ended up being openly gay, it doesn't change the music anyway.

I had the honor of catching Stanley opening for Larry Carlton in LA. When I heard his more recent classical music playing something clicked.
