Long Island New York, I had a crush on Stanley Jordan's sister. So I went to her house and Stanley answered the door. I did not know him at the time. He was surprised that a guy came over to see his sister, because this has never happened before, he stated. Stanley invited me in and took me up to his room because his sister was not at home. He had a stack up to the ceiling. He broke out the voice-corder and began to play. After the song he asked me how did I like it. I said it was alright. I just wanted to see his sister. He and his dad invited me to fly in a plane that his dad would pilot. I said no, I was afraid. This is where music comes from, the real Stanley Jordan!!!

Listen carefully to what Stanley says at the 17:15 mark - not THAT is a musician. He doesn't think of showcasing his amazing CHOPS, but is focused on how can he contribute on his instrument to help make the song and overall soundscape better. There are so many talented guitarists who do not understand that making great music is not about showcasing one's chops and making your guitar dominate the soundscape - as that approach is far more about showmanship than it is musicianship. REALLY great chops should always enhance the music in a supporting role, even during passages where one's instrument has a prominent position in the song.

I had the honor of catching Stanley opening for Larry Carlton in LA. When I heard his more recent classical music playing something clicked. The idea of Jordan playing Classical pieces with a Classical Acoustic guitar instead of electric. His revolutionary style which has virtually invented the 8 finger technique, seems perfect to reinvent the language of Classical Acoustic Guitar as well.

Saw Stanley when he went on before Larry Carlton (one of my top three) at Pine Knob in Michigan.... some of the songs, he played two guitars... the one on a stand was a Casio midi guitar so he had grand piano patches and such... while the other half of his brain soloed on his Travis Bean.. Amazing player!

Many credit Stanley Jordan as the prime innovator of the two-hand taping technique on the guitar, but it was actually a guy named Emmett Chapman, the inventor of the stick, who was doing this as far back as the early 70's.

All these years... Still in awe. I've tried this, and I'm wondering is it something about his fingers or something about the instrument or positioning of the strings or fretboard because my notes are not half as clear or amplified. Maybe some of you guys have a more success at this.

    60 years old.
If I stand next to him, with my 50, many will say he is my son.
