Exactly! The German/Prussian military leader Carl von Clauswitz states in his book "Von Krieg/On War" that war is an extension of diplomacy/foreign policy.
Everytime you guys put out a video it’s like a new episode of a good HBO show for me. This channel is really what RUclips should be for. I love the passion your team puts into this, the research, and the effort to include all of these wonderful reenactors. Thanks for doing what you do!

Concerning special forces, I’ve always been intensely facinated by the Dromedarii patroling the desert frontiers in Syria. They didn’t just patrol for enemy armies, also for nomadic bands trying to raid the provinces, and given the nature of their posting I doubt they would actually be the ones doing the fighting. So imagine being a lone auxiliary or even Roman, on your dromedary or horse, roaming through the vast desert with perhaps a few others, rations for a week, maybe doing some hunting along the way, every contingent their own stretch of frontier to patrol. We can imagine them moving at night by the stars, conversing with locals for any leads on raiding parties, thinking of their farms and townhouses back home while they keep riding, through a desert that for them ends only when their term of service is up… Must have been some life
The word for ambush in latin is "insidio" also meaning treachery, so you can guess what romans thought about asymmetrical warfare and being sneaky in general
You're attributing context incorrectly. The reason Insidio was used to mean treachery was because it just means sneaky. That doesn't imply a negative meaning.
Just watched Gladiator 2 🤮. God, I wish Hollywood would take more note of reenactors; the real deal looks so much better and more dramatic than the drabness they drape Romans in.
As a Viking reenactor I have to say that The Northman is very good. The kit, weapons, sundries, and tools shown are pretty damn good! Another movie that heavily used reenactors was Gettysburg. Thousands of Civil War reenactors showed up to film it when the film makers sent out a request.

@bavariancarenthusiast2722 No, we won't. Just like with Ariovistus. Romans would have to acknowledge that they sent assassins to deal with the problem. That was not very prestigious to say the least and created bad impression among other Roman allies

The concept of special forces was a modern concept of the 20th century. I am very surprised, wow! How interesting these new Romans are speaking the barbarous language.
No I definitely couldnt, not now anyways. The average mf legionary marched 17 miles every day with almost 100 lbs of gear IN SANDALS and then they built forts at night. Absolute units
@@DiogolindirThey are, per modern definitions, a sandal. Theyre even called «military sandal boots» in most contexts. Calling caligae sandals is no less wrong than calling them shoes.
@@Diogolindir For sure, certainly some of the most technological footwear at the time. Breathable, drainable, high and structured, and the nails on the bottom for grip and longevity.
This actually wouldn’t be that hard. Think of the small specialized teams that can get around in today’s age with all the technologies. Back then they could have mostly stayed undetected pretty easily by staying in the woods or blending with locals. The worst part was having to travel light and rely on foraging. If these guys have so little contact & camp separately from the main forces, & were often themselves from similar "barbarian" cultures as their enemies, how did Roman troops & pickets identify these guys coming in over thinking they were the enemy? There must have been some kind of call sign or phrase that both would know for identification.
The Roman Special Forces are just guards who the king told them "Why did you let them escape and not fall on your sword for failing me! I will order your googlewon'tletmesaythatword at once!" Who figured out that all they have to say is "Wait, my king, please hear our cry. Let us kill or recapture them, or die trying." So they are the most dedicated men on all of known Eurasia.

I'm not entirely sure about the definition of modern special forces. Many of the attributes illustrated like plausible deniability or operating without umbilical cord seem more on the side of Spionage than Military tasks. Yes, SOF do operate rather autonomously and self-sustained but they are marked combatents and so if caught can't pretend to be someone else.

Praetorians were considered “elite” but I’ve found mainly as a protect regiment at best. Maybe thousands at a time but so spread like my checks who knows
37:25 interesting ideas but is there any concrete evidence for this? Additionally, is there any evidence of Roman’s wearing leather armour like we see on the shoulders and shins of this auxiliary? If so, please could you cite sources as I’m very interested in this idea

Ave. True to Caesar.
The concept of special forces was a modern concept of the 20th century. I am very surprised, wow! How interesting these new Romans are speaking the barbarous language.
Could you Survive the Battle of Agincourt?
No I definitely couldnt, not now anyways. The average mf legionary marched 17 miles every day with almost 100 lbs of gear IN SANDALS and then they built forts at night. Absolute units
Caligae are not sandals tho. Those are ancient military boots
@@DiogolindirThey are, per modern definitions, a sandal.
Theyre even called «military sandal boots» in most contexts. Calling caligae sandals is no less wrong than calling them shoes.
@@-_pi_- well, you might be right. What I wanted to express is that those sandals were made for military campaigns
@@Diogolindir For sure, certainly some of the most technological footwear at the time.
Breathable, drainable, high and structured, and the nails on the bottom for grip and longevity.

The map at 33:59 is wrong.. when did romans conquered todays Moldova region of Romania?
How much influence have the actors concerning their "lines"? (I presume there is a script)
Just when I thought that the Roman series you were doing couldn't get more interesting.
Titus Pullo and Lucious Verinus 😂
Brilliant
One minute your enjoying the great life on the frontier, the next you could be marching on Rome itself
Another banger
I was just thinking about the Roman Empire.
So was the Roman empire when the highlanders ran right through them.
This actually wouldn’t be that hard. Think of the small specialized teams that can get around in today’s age with all the technologies. Back then they could have mostly stayed undetected pretty easily by staying in the woods or blending with locals. The worst part was having to travel light and rely on foraging. Often hunger was the main concerns

Rome got battered on the end
Never fail at surprising me xd
If these guys have so little contact & camp separately from the main forces, & were often themselves from similar "barbarian" cultures as their enemies, how did Roman troops & pickets identify these guys coming in over thinking they were the enemy?
There must have been some kind of call sign or phrase that both would know for identification.

Frumentarii. same as dudes in Fallout New Vegas?
The Roman Special Forces are just guards who the king told them "Why did you let them escape and not fall on your sword for failing me! I will order your googlewon'tletmesaythatword at once!"
Who figured out that all they have to say is "Wait, my king, please hear our cry. Let us kill or recapture them, or die trying."
So they are the most dedicated men on all of known Eurasia.
