pet shop boys , one of my favourite bands of my youth. first time i heard thier ' west end girls' song, i became a fan. long before anyone else was thier fan. they represented my youth culture. but of course i didnt realise they were gay. no one cared to be honest,. we enjoted thier music.

It's so funny to see him after not seeing this video in so long.. he looks SO young! Of course then I would've thought he was - not old, but older.. We had a good sense of humor back then. It does kind of sum up the 80s.
This was Gabriel's take on mega stars, he was dealing with, and his assent to a household name at this point in his career, this album blew up and he went from celebrated, somewhat undergound artist, to selling out stadiums. He also pioneered the use of music video as a artistic medium rather than just a plow to sell the song. He won numerous awards for this and Sledgehammer at the time. And infact Sledgehammer is the most played music video of all time on MTV. The guy is brilliant, and he continues that brilliance to this day.

The "Sledgehammer" video is such a classic, I forget how amazingly more difficult the stop-motion Claymation was to make for "Big Time." Imagine making a long loaf of clay with different colored clay layered through the loaf where each section is an image and then slicing the loaf and photographing each slice onto one film frame image so the film runs like a cartoon. And that's just one scene. That film team was incredible.
Hi Rory, Hope you are well. You seem to gravitate towards all of my all time favourite albums. Peter Gabriel's 'So' and 'Us' are right up there with the most esteemed albums in my collection.
Amazing videos. He has a great sense of vision and soundscapes. I mean, he can get serious, as in Biko (about South African activist who was beaten to death in a police interview room), to this.
Rory uses the right word to call it funky, because the bass line a total funk, but the song becomes this out of control almost like a dirge with a beat and a dire warning about falling to ones ego and greed. // I’m actually see a note for each color. Or rather, I see a color for each note. And this song in A-flat minor is blue. Key of A-flat is a very cold, lonely key. And in a minor mode it’s definitely lonely at the top. Great post. Big fan.
