  • Some time ago I've had the wonderful opportunity to play the incredible Kern-Organ of the Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg / Straßburger Münster! The great acoustics of the church as well as the position of the organ console made this a really great experience!
    I hope you will enjoy this recording of the Marche Triomphale written by B. Steane - a wonderful, yet unknown, March which fits this french style organ perfectly!

    Bruce Steane was an English organist and (very) minor composer who seems to have lived in and around London for the whole of his life. His music tends to turn up in old anthologies and much of it is mediocre but this is an excellent work. Many thanks to Paul for introducing me to it with such an excellent performance.

    Complimenti all'organista e all'organo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Mi spiace solo non trovare in internet lo spartito della sola marcia.

    Well despite only having 6 ranks surviving from this original Silbermann organ and many added over the years along with several changes- it appears from now and Diane Bish's recordings that the voicing hasn't changed much on this organ- including the reeds. Enjoyed this!!!!

      Yup, I totally agree! Its a wonderful instrument!! 😀

    • @SpitzPrincipal4
      @SpitzPrincipal4 Год назад

      @@PaulFey Yup, both Andreas Silbermann's and Gottfried Silbermann's Trumpet's and Pedal Bombarde's in particular were notably authoritative in town- not sharp- but very broad and full- in fact even moreso than Caville-Coll's. The Bombarde's of the Silbermann company were, IMHO- far better than their Pedal Posaune 16's, very similar to an Ophicleide 16'- (Pedal reed in between a Posaune and a Tuba.) - the clearer recording of this now as opposed to Diane Bish's in the 90's or so reminds me very much of the organ at St. Mary Magdelene of where Healey Willan was organist and composer for a few decades, that organ started out as a 4-manual with 29 ranks in 1909 (No mixtures except a Quint 1 1/3', common of the time for smaller organs). The one difference between the Silbermann's is Gottfried's Trumpet's were much louder, such as the 1732 Silbermann organ of the Ebermunster Abbey in France, similar year to this one and the keyboard's had the slider coupler's. Many of that organ's Specifications were similar to the original build of this organ in 1741, the 32' pedal Contrebasson (16' stopped) was added in later years to this organ along with several other ranks. All aside- the reeds on this organ are truly delicious- if I may honest.

      Hi Colin, the guide was right to a fair extent- the only original, parts of the organ are 6 of the ranks, all else has been replaced but built with respect to originality in mind. I've never been to the cathedral but have heard the organ a large number of times over the years. The original console of the organ is on the gallery floor and kept as a memento. There's a letter written by Mozart to his father dated from 1778 on that console as well when Mozart played this organ. That console has the usual of that time- slide couplers and perhaps just over 2/3 of the stops. The Contrebasson 32' was added later in years and the original configuration had only 7 reed stops on the entire organ. There were only 3 stops (Including a Cornet) on the Echo division. Over the years however, they appeared to be attentive enough to keep the original voicing of the organ to as close as it possibly could get. The reeds of this organ now and earlier are quite similar- rather authoritative and yet more depth than a sharp tone. Since Paul Fey played this, the last time I heard this organ and few other times in between was when Diane Bish played March Grand Choeur on this organ amongst others (Including Boellman's Toccata in C minor.)

    Thanks for this. We used it as a triumphant postlude at my mother's funeral in late February and I used it as the postlude for Easter. Widor has had a long enough run in my opinion. Thanks for this It was great.

    Those trumpet, cornopean, tuba, tromba, horn and trombone/pousane are extremely powerful reeds when combined together with other stops.

    Further, certainly never heard this one, but so far at least 20 times this past week and it's a rare work at that, Paul- but most definitely it suits this classic organ well! And by your body movements throughout- I can see you enjoyed yourself and were QUITE into the music- as would anyone be on such an organ! As Diane Bish described this organ on one of her first visits, "The Strasbourg Cathedral organ, or also known as the "swallow's nest organ", it hangs precariously high on the wall of the cathedral." By the side view you have of this organ- clearly the Positiv division hangs on FAR less. WOW. That's a lot of weight on a division simply attached to the balcony- and doesn't appear attached to the bottom of the main case at the top of that division (Great/Pedal Division). Rather impressive! Regards, Nigel from British Columbia, Canada
