By providing a very large surface area it creates an area that resembles a snow sail. You are pushed forward with the avalanche rather than being pushed under. It’s much like surfing in front of an ocean wave wile holding onto an inflated inner tube, rather than the wave crashing through you and tumbling you under and making you eat sand.
