- Hi, so this is my new train trip report about Italy's private high-speed train, the italo owned by NTV. I have booked Club Executive class (=first class), which is the highest booking class on the italo and hence is their firsdt class product. I traveled from Milano Centrale to Roma Termini. Hope you enjoy this trip report about train travel in Italy!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Music: specially arranged for the video, because it's fun to do so!
I travelled in the first class from Florence to Rome
And I'm unable to forget those delightful 3 hours...
Amazing experience 😍
It is! Great to hear you enjoyed it, I can't wait to go to Italy again!
Nice trip. Nice train. Something we only dream about here in Zambia.
Hi and thanks for watching! Well, with the rapid speed that certain parts of Africa are transforming, there is a good chance that there will be high speed trains. Moreover, your videos about your country make me want to visit it 😀👍!
@@travelmentaryTV hope to see you in Zambia one day. 😁😁👍
Still compiling a trip report about a train ride I made, hope you can watch it when I post it.
Absolutely, I subbed to your channel because you show things that you can’t find in anywhere else really great job on your behalf. Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, Namibia and Senegal are definitely on my list!
Very nice video! As an Italian, I usually take Italo because it is more often on time and is cheaper if you book in advance. Freccia rossa used to have more routes but now Italo is expanding. Up until a few years ago you could get into a lounge even with normal tickets. Access to the train is now restricted to ticket holders for security purposes in Milan, Rome and Florence.
Thank you! Yes, italo is expanding, they have a great product and a lot of promotional deals. But to be honest I enjoy traveling with both the Italo and the Frecce. My aspiration is to make videos of all Italian long distance trains. Anyway, thanks for watching and your comment!
I travelled in executive, very nice experience!
Executive Class at Frecciarossa is mindblowing🤯
Ótimas cenas de Milano Centrale. Excelente vídeo. Muito obrigado pela postagem. Realmente os italianos conseguiram melhorar muito seus trens. Muito bom isso.
Been on club executive. It's really cool!
Our route was Roma Tiburtina to Florence (I believe it is S.M. Novella)
Lucky
S.M.N Santa Maria Novella, Florence main station.
What is the price from Rome to Florence?
Hi, you can look it up on their website: www.italotreno.it/en Depending on when you book and which fare you get, I have found tickets for as little as 14,90 €.
Grazie a te. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
I learned valuable information, thanks for showing the stations in between, I was not aware the NTV stopped in Florence. I also liked the comparison between the different trains, as you showed form the platform high above. Excellent panoramic views.
Thanks a lot for watching and your comment! I’m glad you enjoyed the video :)
Great trip report between Milan and Rome the train looks really luxurious especially the seats the 79 euros was very much good value for money
Hi, thanks for watching! Yes it's a really good train service for a reasonable price and the Italian model of competition on the railway sector is something a lot of countries could learn from.
Christian from travelmentary TV
@@travelmentaryTV no problem and I agree other countries could also do with competition on railways like public vs private so passengers get to experience both
I always enjoy watching the videos. Especially my home country Italy 🇮🇹
Happy to hear that! I have quite a few videos from Italy on this channel and there are more to come :).
Great video but for the entertainment you don’t need to bring your own headphones, you can ask to hostesses for and them will give you some branded italo
Cool, thanks for watching and telling me about the headphones!
I traveled both companies in Italy, but I prefer Italo cause is faster than Freccia. 250km/h vs 300km/h. Both have a good service but very different configurations. Good report! Liked it very much!.
Hi and thanks for watching. They both have the same speed. The operating speed in Italy is not limited by the train, but by the railway infrastructure. They wanted to raise it recently, but decided to leave it the way it is. For this reason both the Italo and the Frecciarossa have the same operating speed of 300 km/h. Both are capable to go much faster, but are not allowed to, because of regulations and infrastructure. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-speed_rail_in_Italy
Both run up to 300km/h (and as max speed on test can reach 400+ km/h)
Very informative & great video. I wish the owners of the Italo high speed train company would invest in the California High Speed Rail, they would be a great investor. I enjoyed the video very much. I travel long distance in the U.S. by Amtrak train and also when I’m home in the San Diego area I ride Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner trains between San Diego, Los Angeles & Oxnard,California alternating my visits between the 2 cities. Train travel is the best way to see any country that has passenger train service.
Hi, thank you for watching and your comment. An Italo train in the US sounds good, but they wouldn't be able to build the railway infrastructure for it alone. Also, thank you for sharing your train travel experience, you just gave me an idea for some new videos!
Greate train and great service. Nice main station in Milano. 👌👍
And it‘s not too expensive either. Thanks for watching!
Great Trip Report once again!
Thank you!
Gtreat train service and video describing it. Well done
Thanks! I agree it’s a very good train service. Hopefully they will expand their business to other European countries, as the EU has decided to liberalize the train market.
While i personally prefer the FrecciaRossa interiors over Italo's, it must be acnowledged that the comfort at max speed (300kmh) on NTV Italo is far superior. The FrecciaRossa suffers a constant sideways shaking as if it was bouncing between the rails. Standing and walking along the train can be a proper challenge, whereas Italo is perfectly firm and stable at any speed.
I had 0 problems in either of the trains. And I was walking around with a lot of camera equipment for my videos. I can’t acknowledge your statement. Edit: In the ETR500 the ride is quite bumpy.
The David same
Really enjoyed this video. Travelles from Florence S.M.N to Milano last summer on Italo. Loved it! Just a quick note on the WiFi, I experienced the problem but apparently I had to go to Italo's website while connected to the hotspot then it would prompt an internet access window. Anyways great trip report, subbed to your channel! Keep up the work!
Hello, glad you enjoyed this video. It seems that I have difficulties with establishing a proper Wifi connection not only in the Italo, but also on the Frecciarossa. I don't know exactly why, but it probably has to do with the settings of my phone. Anyway, thanks a lot for your comment and subscribing. I wish you happy trips and it would be cool to welcome you on this little channel again :).
If you ever come to the Chicagoland Area you should give The South Shore Line a try to all the way to South Bend Airport and back to Downtown Chicago Millennium Station. The South Shore Line is the world's last running Interurban Railroad so it has a lot of history around it.
Hi, that sounds interesting, will consider that!
Great video. I do like the seats and it looks better than some First Class areas of trains I have been in.
Hi, thanks for watching and your kind words. Yeah, I agree it is certainly above average, which is partly because those trains are still quite new and they seem to try to keep them in a good state. But I have to say that my experience in Italy's high speed trains was generally a good one, be it with the Italo or with the Frecciarossa :-).
No problem. Compared to the trains we have here in Northern Ireland and with the exception of the Enterprise trains that operate between Belfast in Northern Ireland and Dublin in the Republic of Ireland that has first class seating. Our local trains only have standard class seating that is okay. I would recommend trying out the first class on the Irish Enterprise train if you plan to visit Ireland and wanted to stay in Dublin as it departs Dublin Connolly station every 2 hours for Belfast and it is a very nice route to ride along.
All the best.
Wow, thanks for that tip, another destination I put on my list!
Very nice video!!!!!!!!! Greetings from Cattolica Italy 😉
Grazie mille :-)!
Se sei di cattolica una volta possiamo fare un trainspotting insieme in agosto
Super complete video, with a lot of useful information.
Hello, thank you so much for your feedback! It is very important for me as creator and makes me happy to hear that :).
Christian from travelmentary TV
@9:53 that’s where I live! That white VW bus (1974 T2) is mine and we used it to travel all across Europe! Nice video!
Haha, that’s really cool. Love your VW, a real classic! Thanks for watching! Please don't forget to subscribe, maybe it's not the last time you see your T2 in a video :).
both NTV and trenitalia will operate in Europe in the coming years.
In these weeks Trenitalia is testing a FRECCIAROSSA 1000 to operate in France since 2019 (for a total of 5 FRECCIAROSSA trains that will be used only in France from 2019)
I wanted to point out how the German newspaper DER SPIEGEL a few weeks ago defined the Italian railway system as best in Europe, and invited the German company DB to draw inspiration from the Italian model . The article: www.spiegel.de/plus/warum-italien-ein-paradies-fuer-bahnfahrer-ist-a-c7eb9813-3b89-4dd4-aad7-b96186b48497
PS: I want to add that the company Alstom is French but the trains are built 100% in Italy by the former FIAT FERROVIARIA company that was bought by Alstom years ago.
All Italian trains at both high speed and normal trains are 100% produced in Italy by Italian companies that export trains all over the world
The problem with DB is that they own the railway infrastructure,, so unlike in Italy, there is no competition on neutral grounds. I wanted to make a trip report about the ICE in first class in February, when I went to ITB in Berlin, but I had to abort this mission, because my train got stuck at first and then was broken and didn't even arrive at Berlin main station.
I know the EU wants to deregulate the train market and the Italian companies would crush DB and some other European railway operators. But they don't want that competition so I expect them to try to keep that new competition away at all costs.
I would not want to make a mistake, but I think that the opening of the railway market across Europe is mandatory from 2019.
I invite someone more experienced than me to confirm!
Thanks for the video! ;-)
PS I saw that it also follows the "sector" air, the new government decided to revive ALITALIA and not to sell more 'society' buying 51% of the shares. This is good news, I hope the Italian state does the same good job it did with the railways.
It is a historic and glorious airline that does not deserve to disappear
Absolutely, and you are right liberalization of the train market is mandatory. Still I think DB will use all kinds of tricks to keep competition away. And you are right about Alitalia, too in my opinion, the should never ever sell it to anyone, who doesn’t want to keep it as an independent Italian company. The problem of Alitalia is the debt and not the business model. There are enough passengers in Italy 🇮🇹 and Alitalia is actually expanding (!) right now.
What Lufthansa and other “investors” want, is to get Alitalia practically for free, without debt, similar to what happened to Swissair and Austrian Airlines.
I hope the new Italian government will not accept that kind of sellout.
You deserve more attention
Love the AGV i wish my italian was as good as your english.
Well, I'm struggling with Italian as well, because I have so many things to do that I don't get to really learning it. I'm good at understanding, but not good at talking. I hope that over time I will improve it. Thanks for watching.
Thank you very much! After your video I also bought a ticket in Club Executive!
Wish you a good and safe trip!
Aah the AGV, the successor to the TGV that never came to be.
Well done, you. Informative, well paced, well edited. It is as if I am on an adventure with a good friend. Say, shall we cross Canada on the Rocky Mountaineer? I promise that you will always have the window seat!
Hi, glad you enjoyed the video! Well, I usually prefer to travel on my own :D, because I would be a very bad travel companion as I'm busy most of the time checking all the camera equipment and the gear, preparing SD cards, recharging batteries, planning the recording and so on and so on :). As far as the Canadian train is concerned, thanks for the travel idea, maybe next year I can do a video on it or even a video series given the length of that journey.
travelmentary TV - My reply was purely rhetorical but I am so glad, as are many, many others, that you create these videos. We get to enjoy journeys we would otherwise never make.
Yeah, I understand, I just wanted to give some insights on how it is to make those videos, sometimes I see more of the trip afterwards, when I'm editing the video haha ;-). Right now I'm sitting on a mountain of unedited material and there will be more trips soon, which I will release in the coming weeks and months. Thanks for watching!
Think you were unlucky in the lounge; we had a range of sandwiches eg Prosciutto and mozzarella etc
Hello, yeah, maybe I was there just too early in the morning. Thanks for watching!
travelmentary TV Hope you enjoyed club executive as much as me! Great video too!
Absolutely, it is a very good train service!
It’s a very nice video! Up! Good luck, you are a fantastic youtuber! Congratulation from turin, italy
Hi, thank you for watching and the kind words. I’m working on a lot more content, both from Italy and other parts of the world!
Ulisse Stacchini, the designer of the San Siro Stadium died in 1945 way before the many renovations which completely changed its looks, adding the second ring and surrounding ramps in 1955, then adding the third ring, the gigantic pillars and the rooftop in 1990.
That’s correct, but the original San Siro stadium was designed by him. When I’m doing the videos I can’t put every little detail in what I say, because otherwise the video would be very long, too long for most people in fact.
San Siro is my window view in the last 38 years. I live on the 15th floor of a building about 1km from it.
Wow, I can imagine for a soccer fan that must be amazing!
Unfortunately I'm not much, been there only once for a match and once for a concert, before 1990 during matches, the police cut off the traffic and I needed to divert about 6 kilometers to go home. Since 1990 when they build the third ring, they also built a four lane tunnel under the stadium, this has reduced the stress quite a lot, though you still find thousands of people walking on the roads and cars need to travel and walking speed.
Yeah, I can understand that. Living next to a stadium can be very stressful for sure, especially since not all people behave in a way that respects the residents... But anyway thank you for commenting and adding that additional piece of information!
Hi everyone, so here it is, the long-awaited Italo video! I hope you enjoy it! If you don’t want to miss any upcoming videos, please consider subscribing!
Here in the US, the fastest train is the Acela Express from Washington DC to Boston with an average speed of 135 km/hr and a maximum speed of 240 km/hr (but only for a 34 mile stretch in Rhode Island). Your 300 km/hr Italo is undoubedly much faster by both counts.
Hi and thanks for watching and your comment. Yes, there is no doubt that the Italian railway system is one of the best and much faster than what is offered in the US. However, when I made my video about the Acela (which you can find on my channel), I came to the conclusion that it still can be an alternative to the plane on certain sections. One major advantage is the fact it stops right in Manhattan making a long transfer obsolete. Also you don’t have all the hassle with TSA, check in and boarding.
Take and Compare the airports shuttle trains .. Milan Malpensa Express vs Roma Fiumicino Leonardo Express !
Hi, thanks for your input. I usually don’t film regional/short distance trains, but I actually find your idea very interesting. I think I might do such a video. Thanks for the idea!
Lovely video, your Italian sounds excellent, where are you from?
Hi thanks for watching, nah, my Italian is not very good, but I'm working on it :D.
Very Good report! I like ITALO
Thank you!
Great video....thanks for posting.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed watching it!
The pastry was a small Pain au Chocolat.
Yes, that's the term I was looking for. Thanks!
Nice video!
Cheers!
I like the italo
I'm guessing that u.s. private Equity Firm couldn't find a way to put a high-speed rail unit in the u.s. such a sad deal
The US and high-speed passenger trains, that’s a difficult relationship. I can only state my opinion, but I don’t see much of a chance for that to change completely for so many reasons. However, on certain routes, I think it is possible and it is done in some cases (for instance the Acela, see on my channel) or the Brightline (will release a video on that, too).
It is difficult to compare the US with Italy, first and foremost because the US is more than 30 times as large as Italy. But I agree more effort in building some decent high speed railways in the US is needed. Last but not least thank you for watching!
@@travelmentaryTV sure no problem. I enjoyed watching this video!
very good video
Thanks, I’m happy you liked it. Many similar videos are in production :-)
Currently they having promotion milan-firenze just 9.9 Euro
Wow, that's a good rate!
😭that's crazy cheap
You should try the TGV in France, great train and sceneries
Thanks for watching and your suggestion! The TGV is absolutely on my list, haven’t decided on which route though!
When I went home from holiday in Toulouse/ Carcasonne, I took the TGV from Monpellier to Lille Europe (I live in Belgium). We had nice sceneries and we went 304 km/h on some parts of the track!

How much room is there for luggage? I’m planning on buying two executive tickets. We will be traveling with 1 carry on and 1 large luggage? Should I upgrade for the private room? I didn’t notice in your video where the luggage goes in those private rooms?
Hi, when you book normal Executive Class seats you can put your luggage above the seat, in the separate compartment I haven’t seen that option, so you would have to put them to the baggage compartment. Here’s a seat plan, where you can see it:
uk.voyages-sncf.eu/sites/uk.voyages-sncf.eu/files/Seat%20map%20-%20Italo%20(NTV).pdf
On the Italo website this file describes the luggage options on the trains:
www.italotreno.it/~/media/Images/content/pdf/Informativa%20bagagli/informativa_bagagli_EN.pdf?la=en
Hope that helps a bit!
Oh and if you’re two people I’d say the private compartment isn’t really necessary, since the regular executive class seats are good (and you can put your luggage right into the overhead compartment). You have various options here: there are two seats on one side, meaning one window seat, one next to the alley or for example two seats facing each other. I recommend you to see the seatplan I included in my first answer.
I wish you a great trip!
what did wrong with ur wifi service registration was probabily a server DNS problem : i always have to switch from google dns to dns provide by my phone company to use it
It seems very plausible that it’s a DNS problem, thanks!
I love that Europe still has competing passenger rail lines...
hi. In the website when you go to see the Club executive the seats are different from those there are in the train you travelled. Why?
On which website? I can’t say anything without seeing it, I’m afraid. Please share the link so I can have a look and I’ll be happy to answer your question. I already have an idea what you mean.
Do you mean here? www.italotreno.it/en/the-train
-> Club Executive?
The reason it looks slightly different on that photo is that it is a different train.
NTV operates the AGV, shown in my video and the slower Pendolino ETR.675 EVO, which is the newest addition to their fleet. You can also see it here: www.italotreno.it/it/il-treno/italo-evo#gallery
Haven’t tested it so far, but definitely will after your comment. Thank you!
Frecciarossa First Class seems to be better. Am I right ?
As I mentioned in the Italo video, it is better to compare Italo‘s Club Executive Class with the business class on the Frecciarossa. With that being said, the main difference is the cabin and the fact that you get warm food in the Frecciarossa Executive Class. The lounges though are more or less the same, I actually prefer the Italo lounges.
Thank you for watching!
Frecciarossa or Italo? Which is the best?
That's hard to say in my opinion, because they are both pretty good and difficult to compare. The Frecciarossa has a fantastic Executive Class cabin, while the Italo Club Executive offers a very good product for a good price. However the Italo Club Executive Class has to be compared with the business class on the Frecciarossa. But I haven't tested that so far. So all I can say is I enjoyed traveling both with the Italo and the Frecciarossa.
Isn't that icon the "airplane mode on" on your phone while trying to connect to the Wi-Fi?
Hello, yes, but so is WiFi. So only the cellular connection was switched off, hence establishing a connection to the wireless network of the train should have been possible. In fact I believe it connected to it, but I couldn‘t access the internet. Thanks for watching!
Oh I see, I have a very old phone (2010) that doesn't allow any connection while the airplane mode is on. This video was very useful, I was trying to figure out which company to choose for my own journey, thanks.
Ah, I see. The thing is my phone doesn't seem to like Wifi in Italian trains, because I had the same problem on the Frecciarossa. I'm happy that this video helped you. On my channel you also find two videos about the Frecciarossa, that might be useful, too. In any case I'd be very happy to welcome you on this channel again, so please consider subscribing.
Have a great trip and a wonderful time in Italy!

@@travelmentaryTV Yeah actually I watched that too! 😉
Just because I’m curious ;), which train do you prefer?
where are you from?
I wish there will be agv train here in Philippines PNR once have an alstom diesel locomotive.
Would be cool to have a high speed train in the Philippines 🇵🇭.
Thanks a lot. With due respect I prefer Alstom AGV over the shinkansen, it's faster, more comfortable and less expensive.
Which one would you recommend? Italo or treinitaly? (sorry I'm not sure what the name is, please don't mind)
I like them both, the italo and the Frecciarossa. Each train operator has advantages and disadvantages, but my impression was that they're both good trains.
@@travelmentaryTV price? Cause I might be going to Turin (hopefully 🙏) and I saw that italo is only 9.90 euro!
What websites do I check the other train?
Thank you
Their website is: www.trenitalia.com
The italo has some nice offers, although I doubt that you get the booking class shown in the video for 9,90€.
@@travelmentaryTV oh no surely not. That was economy. Also I was wondering that will I get space in economy to keep my luggage? I'll have 3 bags.
Thank you so much for helping
@@travelmentaryTV oh god I just saw the prices and italo is so much better in terms of price. It's around 12.50 euro for regional train to Turin and 14.50 for the fast one. (sorry I don't know Italian much so I can't spell the train in Italian). Also it's 14.50 in the morning 5 whereas italo is same price all day! :)
If you want to try the Frecciarossa buissness class. You should try it on Frecciarossa, not on Frecciarossa 1000 because italo, frecciarossa, frecciarossa 1000 are the best trains in italy
You mean the Frecciarossa 500? I want to try most of those trains, the Frecciabianca, too!
Freccia bianca is an Intercity with more beatiful locomotives. (Search on youtube new intercity italy) the difference is this: Intercities do longer travels, but a little bit more stops, the Frecciabiancas do shorter travels. The Freccia argento is slower than Frecciarossa but it can go on the sud because it is a "pendolino", but it also run on the extreme nord and on nord est. Here Freccia argento have got the competitor "Italo evo"
Thanks for explaining that in such detail, that’s very helpful! I think that over time I will try all those beautiful Italian trains on different routes!
anyway I want to compliment you for the excellent quality of your videos and for the effort you put in it, because traveling so much is really difficult
Thank you so much! Well, for me it’s a lot of fun to travel and to create these videos, although the editing usually takes a lot if time! Thanks for watching!
Hey sir, why don't you make a vid on the regional train Padova - Bologna, 7.10 or 8.10 am. It's great. Overcrowded, beggars onboard, ticket inspectors chasing ppl without ticket, loud music, garlic scent, and other surprises. Apart those things it's nice. Cool videos anyway.
Hello, I don’t make videos about regional trains for the reasons you mention and some others, too. First of all, I have a lot of camera and filming gear with me, which requires a lot of space around me and which I don’t want to get lost or stolen. Besides I wouldn’t find those videos very interesting. Moreover, please don’t forget that I can only make a limited number of videos as this channel is just a little hobby in my busy life. Thank you for your understanding and I wish you a great day.
@@travelmentaryTV Was just joking (well, not that much in facts..), I understand you. Enjoy your next travel!
Thank you, I work on many more videos and have just filmed two train rides in the US. More stuff from Italy will also be released soon.

poorish catering, either in the lounge or in the train! state catering is better!1

Great, have an amazing trip and if you have time please let me now how you liked it!
@@travelmentaryTV good video!

Interesting - but ghastly music which should be omitted.
Nope, I make the videos how I like them and that will never change. There is nothing that I “should” do, that's the beauty of me being on RUclips. I can do whatever comes to my mind, just like an artist, that paints pictures. My channel is my home with my own design and my own rules. If someone doesn't like it, there are thousands of other creators, that make travel videos with music or without it, with voiceovers or without. So instead of insulting my work, I strongly recommend to search for content that you like. Have a wonderful day!
You pay all that money for that lounge????
I’m sorry, but I don’t understand your question. Lounge access is part of the Club Executive ticket.
Lot of prostitution happens on the Italian rail network especially the overnight trains .
