  • This video is in the Re-Engineering the Chess Classics series! To celebrate the publication of my new book (written together with my childhood coach Steve Giddins) I am examining a series of classic games - just as we did in the book - using the creative engine analysis techniques I described in "The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement" At the same time, I get to indulge my current obsessions for a couple of classic players ;) and this time the lucky "victim" is the great Swedish player Gideon Stahlberg. I've been inspired by the wonderful book "Gideon Stahlberg An Epoch in Swedish Chess - Volume 1 The Musketeer Years 1908-1939" by Peter Holmgren (Verendel Publishing) which has led me along all sorts of wonderful paths related to the Swedish chess scene of that era. A sharp Queen's Gambit Accepted opening tempts Stahlberg into a piece sacrifice. He misses a decisive continuation but still emerges with a clear extra pawn. Some inaccuracies and strong defensive play from Book bring a draw back within Black's grasp but only the engines see the path!
I’m grandmaster Matthew Sadler, a 2-times British Champion, and ranked in the world’s top 50 for many years. I’m also a prolific author. My latest book "Re-Engineering the Chess Classics" appeared in May 2023. It uses the techniques described in "The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement" to analyse afresh thirty-five of the most fascinating and complex chess games ever played by World Champions and other top grandmasters.

    Fascinating as ever.
It would be interesting to see how many of these engine ideas were found by analysers at the time. Have we reached the stage where human analysis in old books and magazines is largely otiose?

Most of it was missed I'm afraid and most of the game flows were actually totally different to what people thought at the time (not so different during my time as a professional to be honest!) It's why it's so interesting to do it (and why Re-Engineering the Chess Classics was such a nice book to write) because there are many games that were used as examples in chess books of that era that turn out to have a completely different lesson to the one intended!
