When I was younger in my teens and early 20's Kevin's voice helped me through bad relationships, because Kevin sang mostly about heart-break. He's telling himself he needs to start to actually love her because she's worth it. She wants to be with him so she puts up with his distant attitude. But he wonders exactly how long before she changes her mind about him and moves on to someone more deserving of her.
I feel its about a guy who loved a girl so much... they argued a lot... he fought for her so much (he feels it was pathethic to be that way) and she didn't really care enough. He left heartbroken after she went off with someone else. She got what she wanted. She realized she made a mistake in leaving him, she begs him. He has so much to say, but he just says "no" to the relationship. He says if it will change her life if he changes his mind about it. He isn't going to. He can only think that she should love that other guy so much she will move on from him. He's done.

So now he tells the next man in line he needs to be the one to give her the love he thinks she deserves. While standing aside and trying to persuade himself that he should be the one that she loves. No matter how wrong he knows all of that is.
