- The USC Trojans opened up the 2024 season with an absolute statement of a win over the LSU Tigers. The Trojan defense was up for the challenge against the Tiger offensive line, limiting LSU to 117 yards on the ground.

Welcome to the big10, I’m from Michigan, Spartan fan here,but I cheer for Michigan when there not playing state. Loved USC as a kid growing up,the matchups between them and Notre Dame were the best,talking about the 70’s. Anyway so glad when I heard that those 4 west coast teams were joining the Big Ten,especially USC. Tired of Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State dominating the Big Ten.

I thought it would be a lot more high scoring, LSU played well defensively, but USC made the plays I expected them to make down the stretch.
Yeah I think the blocking on the offensive line and the pass rush needs some improvement in preparation for the Michigan game
USC will still have growing pains. They are a young team and thin on depth. However, this was a big statement win! I can't understate this victory. USC will build on this win!

I agree with the “growing pains” assessment. If USC continues to develop they can be an emerging powerhouse.
You can try to convince yourself of that but the B1G is going to have to learn the hard way. You already know what happens when USC is USC.

Sc did a really good job in that game . LSU also played really well. It was a good game to watch this weekend. I really enjoyed it was not sure how it would go. I am glad that I decided to check it out . Hopefully we have some more close games like that this season.

PAC-12 was the best conference in football last year and the big 10 just got their 4 best teams. The a big10 is now stacked far far better than the SEC
Agree. B1G picking up Oregon, Washington UCLA and USC is a huge boost to the conference. Gonna be tough for Pac12 teams used to playing at 7:30 Pacific time going east and playing at 9:30 a.m. PT, but also gonna be tough for B1G teams coming west and playing in Autzen and Husky Stadium. Ohio State is in for a shock when they see how loud it is in Autzen on 10/12. I've been to a number of stadiums all over the country (@ND, @Auburn 2003, Penn St. @Giants Stadium 2000), and there are very few times you will hear a louder stadium than Autzen. For the record, the loudest stadium I've ever been in was 1996 USC @ Arizona St. with Jake Plummer the year they shut out two-time defending national champion #1 ranked Nebraska. Loudest game I've ever been to, including the 2002 USC-Oregon game at Autzen. TBF, USC didn't allow Oregon to really get into the game that year, so it might have been louder had USC not dominated Oregon early on.

That was a great win. I was a Riley doubter but that proved me wrong. They were clutch when it mattered. The Big 10 race is going to be brutal.

The only thing USC's defense didn't do was put pressure on the QB. That speaks to how good LSUs tackles are at pass protection. We won't face another pair of tackles like that all season. Let's see how our pass rush evolves going forward, but I'm optimistic.

Of the 117 rush yards LSU had last night, 39 of them came from a single run. If that outlier is removed, LSU was only averaging 3 yards per rush. Really goes to show how that USC defense really stopped LSU's greatest strength.
The defense also did great by making Lacy a nonfactor in the second half. D'Anton Lynn knew what he had to do to keep him in check. Harold Perkins was pretty much irrelevant for the game.
Overall, USC did a good job, but there is a lot of work that needs to be done on both sides of the ball to make them better.
Really glad you brought up the OL for SC. The OL for SC did an outstanding job. I also don’t think LSU is as good as people say they are. But! USC has improved defensively. Scratch that, USC’s defense has dramatically improved! SC dominated. Fight On! ✌️

I PLAYED NEARLY 20 YEARS AND COACHED JUST AS MANY, FROM WHAT I SAW, SC OUT COACHED LSU AND OUT PLAYED LSU. USC IS STRONG

Good job USC, coming from a Miami fan! What is the top of the SEC afraid of with or without Saban at Alabama! A Miami and USC ran right with support! History shows, they become juggernauts who can compete against the top of SEC and beat them! Their recruiting locations and ability to recruit nationally historical proofs this. @@cartersports1Well I believe Miami will be playing USC in the regular season soon. ABC/ESPN will not pick up the ACC extension. Their focus is and is all in with the SEC now. Miami and FSU will be the B10 priority other than Notre Dame!

But I’m going to pump the brakes before I start saying their play on the line of scrimmage was impressive. Let’s see how they measure up on a weekly basis during conference play.
I’ve loved SC football for years. It’s great to see them in the Big 10. Their exciting offensive play just might change the flavor of the Big 10. Especially now that it looks like they’ve got a defense.

Good analysis. I do believe our O-line did really well considering that LSU stacked that box it seemed most of the game. In that final drive to win the game LSU played coverage defense and Moss lit them up. I actually thought Baker would try to stack the box like he did before, but USC was playing up tempo and with the game near the end I'm sure that LSU defense was getting a little gassed.
When i saw Lynn calling cushioned defense I new exactly what he was doing, not get beat over the top. They kept the ball in front of them. Once LSU got into the red zone USC played more aggressive football and that's ultimately what led to LSU having to kick 2 field goals. The USC defense stood up that LSU offense at the right times.
I think going forward Riley will prepare a little more for pressure defense to help out Moss. He did need a little time at times and that could have gone a long way if he had a couple of seconds more.
SC was very good at seeing when momentum was starting to go against them. It appeared at times that LSU was going to walk away but SC put the roadblocks in, thwarted that momentum. It looked like they carried game intensity right to the end.
For USC, D'Anton Lynn had a game plan, a strategy with tactics that worked. He wanted to eliminate the possibility of big plays by LSU. So he had the secondary playing an extra five yards off of LSU's receivers.
Like Big Ted said, this meant a few more completions by LSU but also kept most of the big yardage plays from happening. Lynn wanted to keep LSU in front of them and contain the Tigers in that way. USC doesn't just have a defense with a big, strong line or good talent in the secondary. Theyt have a defense led by a bright, cerebral coach who plays chess, not checkers.
Combine all of that with a Lincoln Riley offense and what can you get? A trip to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta in 2025 and a shot at that famous, beautiful crystal football trophy.
If anyone knows defense, it's you Phil Parker. It certainly seemed as the game went on the soft coverage was intentional.

USC is 75-30-3 all-time against current opponents from the Big Ten Conference, and leads its series with 11 out of the 12 opponents it has faced. USC is 11-2 against Illinois and 7-3 against Iowa. The Trojans are 6-4 against Michigan, 6-1 versus Wisconsin and 5-0 against Northwestern.
Southern California leads the all-time series with the Buckeyes by a 12-9-1 count. The first meeting between the two schools was a 13-12 USC home victory in 1937. The latest meeting at Ohio Stadium came in 1990, a 35-26 USC victory in Columbus.

Michigan is September 21 after a SC bye, which will help prevent SC looking ahead. Michigan has to deal with Texas and no bye playing AR State the following week. (Will they goof and look ahead to USC now)?
After that, USC only gets on an airplane three more times all season, the last being (early) November 2 to Washington (shorter flight and same time zone).
Schedule is not as bad as in first glance. Starting with a win against the SEC is so good for the boys!

@@66luckydude I recognized him from previous Pac-12 games. I was like, "Are Pac-12 officials officiating this game?" But no, he's now with the Big 12. But it will be REALLY GREAT to leave the Pac12 officiating where they call every single minor infraction even if it doesn't affect the play AT ALL.
@@TrojanRussThe lead ref may have been part of the PAC at one point, but he was surrounded by Big 12 officials and he made sure he got the most correct call. Overall this game officiated well. A couple of missed calls, but not all of them can be caught.

Don’t look now but Washington is a helluva team too even with just 2 returning starters on last year’s national championship runner up crew.
A nasty defense and elite running game.
I thought Washington looked good, against an FCS team, but I thought Coleman and their secondary played really well. They are a team that could be sneaky this year and be under the radar with USC and Penn State taking a lot of the attention.
I believe UW will falter some as the season progresses. Practically new team as you mentioned, but also a new coaching staff. It's really difficult to put out a good team in year one. Not impossible, just highly improbable.

Do I think USC should be thinking about Indianapolis? Since I went to USC in their golden yrs, and I get high hopes every yr since, Hell no they shouldnt be thinkin about Indianapolis... USC does this every yr, they start off hot, and then slowlyt go downhill. Also, Lincoln Riley hasnt impressed me yet tbh. When you have the best player in college football 2 yrs straight, and you amass something like 9 losses you shouldnt have your hopes up quite yet... If USC can get through Mich with a win, then now were talking, but until then lets keep this celebration on the lower end...
Except this was against LSU, not exactly a cup cake. SC offense is a good as it gets, so a decent defense will bring them quite far.

Ummmm...casual fans ASSUME USC has no talent....and also while you're at it...coaching DOES MATTER....USC no longer has Alex Grinch around...we'll be fine.
The thing that impressed me most about this 2024 USC is they won despite leaving at least 10 points off the board due to Riley's bad head coaching. 1 was a penalty in the RZ that cost them 4 points and another was bad clock management that would have left them with more oportunity to punch it in in instead of settling for what ended up being a missed feild goal and zero points despite MOSS's best efforts. It's good they won because its always great to see smarmy KELLY lose, but Riley will still cost them some critical games.....They were also very lucky turnovers did not bite them, otherwise things would have gone sideways quickly, in typical USC fashion.
Oregon offense will be better. Idaho is a good team.

Uhhhhhh....LSU has one of the best, if not the BEST, offensive lines in the country this season....according to NFL scouts and PFF.
LSUs tackles are expected to go in the first round of next year’s NFL draft. The guards are said to go no later than the third round. The only inexperienced player on their line is the center. They have a top line in the country this year.

@@sc85sis LSU offensive lines didn’t display the trait of great offensive lines I believe is most important. Great offensive lines get better as the games goes on as they grind down their opponents. It appeared USC ground down LSU yesterday vice the other way around.

I appreciate the USC enthusiasm brother, but we're going to have to take it down a notch. USC will need a miracle to beat Michigan in Ann Arbor. Penn State is a balanced team. USC avoids Ohio State. While Oregon stunk it up this weekend, they are loaded everywhere and will play a lot better.
Alex Brink and Lincoln Riley sucked the life out of USC last season and if we're being honest -- USC didn't finish off Caleb Williams's first season all that well. Lincoln Riley has a lot to answer for, but hiring D'Anton Lynn and the defensive staff that Lynn put together looks highly highly highly more competent than the garbage defense USC offered up under Riley before.
Let's celebrate that USC might actually be a tough team again -- but let's not crown the Trojans just yet,
