Sacred logs are being hauled hundreds of kilometres upriver to rebuild the Ise shrine.
The shrine has been at the centre of the Shinto faith for over 1,300 years. Believers think the spirit of the sun goddess lives there and that it's the spiritual home of the Japanese royal family.
Absolutely incredible! I'm writing a small research paper on this process now, and it never ceases to amaze me just how big the lengths humans will go to to keep tradition. I'm so glad they uphold this tradition.
a true sign of devotion to their faith.
You can learn all about it from "The Rebuilding of Ise Shrine", a haunting short story by László Krasznahorkai.

In a sense, all religions are mere myth. But for the people who believe in these myths they are important.
Me, too though I'm Japanese!
Educative video
They have practiced this tradition for more than 1300 years. The origin of all the religions is here. Believe or not, Moses is buried here, shh, OK!
If only they had water benders...

can someone build me an temple please :D in my backyard

they do that every 13 years.
Not quite... this is repeated every 20 years.
500 million dollars, 10,000 trees every 20 years, and thousands of hours of hard labor? All for a myth? As someone outside looking in, this all seems like a waste to me. But I know I'd have a very different opinion if I was one of the people hauling those logs, so I'm going to shut up and let those people carry on their tradition. Besides, it's kinda neat.
No compulsion in religion
