If that was me, I'd do the same. I think what was most interesting, was the reason you still flew.. Either way, honourable not to shoot you down and instead let you have a chance at landing..
The amount of respect pilots back then had for each other is admirable. Even enemy pilots showed respect for their adversaries. It's good to see the tradition still apply in Rise of Flight. A salute to you and your adversary for escorting you in!
In this case, and remember it's just a game, the other pilot wanted to see if I could make it back. In all the years he's played, he's never seen such a damaged aircraft fly so far. By the way, very cool model ships on your channel. Das Boot is one of my favourite movies
@@badhammermotorworks810 Rise of Flight was released more than a year after Franz Stigler's death. I think they were just drawing parallels between the way J2_Adam behaved and Franz Stigler.
Not only do I applaud you for being an excellent pilot and being able to not only fly a biplane using only one of its wing but also to be able to land it in a reasonable fashion, but I also applaud J2_Adam for his chivalry, I just love how he admires your flying without trying to take you down. If this had actually happened in The great war, I believe that J2_Adam would fly next to you and as you look at him he'd salute you.
Quite scary in the sky too.... think of being in those open cockpits performing all these manoeuvres.. not to mention trying to shoot. Or even if you got shot down..
Does RoF calculate engine torque? If so, I daresay that was probably the only thing keeping you from spinning out of control; the engines torque was counteracting the lack of flight surfaces.
+AINGELPROJECT667 Yes it does. I had full opposite rudder and full throttle. ease off on any of those and the aircraft wanted to roll over. Thanks for watching.
Really enjoying this game , but one major gripe that could easily be fixed yet never will , is that whenever you get shot down , you can just press escape and click to complete the mission... Happens a lot where I get shot down after completing the objective, plummeting to my death at 250+ mph , yet I just click that button and boom , I somehow survive to fly the next day of my career... Excellent , cinematic video man!!!! Could not stop watching until the ending. Brilliant flying. Just found out about this sim a few days ago. Used to fly countless hours of ww1 flight sims on the amiga & early PC in the early 90's. Seriously considering to start again with this one. However........... Are noobs treated fairly descent? I mean , if they behave to the best of their abilitys of course. Back then there was no internet or human opponents. And that's what makes me interested to join the fun. Hello, thank you for your nice comments. Much appreciated! Many hours goes into editing these videos and I'm thrilled you enjoyed it. This game is really a sim and the guys who master it are pretty good with newbies and often are more than happy to give friendly advice. Its a tough game and many drop out after only a few goes. It took me a month to get my first online kill lol. It also depends on what server you go onto. Ones like Flying Circus are tough for newbies, but great if you want quick arcade style action. I prefer the full realism maps. A good joystick and pedals are a great investment and if you can afford it, TrackIR5 is brilliant. Good luck, and watch out for the KiwiBandit. Salute!
Thank you for your kind comments. It was a rare moment within this game, as a lot of players would have shot me down for an easy kill and the points. I tip my cap to J2_Adam for his chivalry.
Awesome video! Loved the respectful British S.E.5a (J2-ADAM) escorting you home to safety. I've limped home with damaged wings, but not as battered as that. Great music too! Thanks.
Nice flying. And it was beautiful the way he escorted you back home. Like that real-life incident in WWII between an Me-109 pilot and the crew of a crippled B17.
I could totally see this as a short movie kind of thing. The music he picked out goes so well with these graphics that it seems if it were conducted just for this video. Great job!
You are a supreme pilot it is very difficult at times to keep an aircraft like that airborn with reall on the single wing I've been in the situation myself i got home but let's just say your landing was better than mine so I know what it's like in those situations J2 showed supreme airmanship an honor he did the right thing. Amazing both of you
Yes! Hooray! I had to look hard and stopped and started but their they were cascading past the side of the fuselage near the cockpit. What detail!!!! Fantastic! Those cartridge cases streaming out of both sides from just under the guns out over the decking really bugged Herman Goering.
after watching this i would love to see an ace dual between you two, no other players, on flak, just you and J2_Adam sluging it out in the skies above no man's land
Thank you. It will come with time. It took me a long time to get my first kill. I played the harder servers when i first started which gave me a lot of experience.

This is similar to what happened to American ace Eddie Rickenbacker (except he had no enemy escort). He'd just finished dogfighting a German plane and shot it down, only to realize that the top skin of the upper wing of his Nieuport 17 had ripped away. He managed to keep it in the air just long enough to cross back over to friendly territory before he finally plunked the Nieuport down in a farmer's field. Upright!
hey i play rof and i love it and on my first day i was flying the nieuport 17 and the bottom wings ripped off and i flew home and was killed landing. never been able to do anything closer than that other than that! good flying and hope to see you on RoF and probably me losing :D
It's really cool how the British plane basicly escorted the German guy home. Quite honestly, If I was a pilot, I would have too much respect for someone who could actually manage to keep that in the air to let anything take it down. Great flying.
Hi, thanks for your question. Yes, its all actual gameplay footage. I got hit by flak and went into a spin from high altitude. Somehow I recovered the aircraft and was able to fly straight and level by balancing the rudder and throttle. J2 Adam was hot on my tail, but messaged him in game and he left me alone. He wanted to see if I'd actually make it back. I hit record and later took the footage and spent several hours editing and adding the music to fit.
I agree, it was incredible. Rise of Flight is just a game, after all, so there is no real loss in letting a wounded pilot or damaged plane get away. I fly with the New Wings, and we emphasize that respect between players. I just get annoyed when people get too caught up in a false sense of nostalgia about real history, thinking that "way back when" was so much better because they've forgotten (or never learned about) the bad parts.
Amazing flying! It must have been difficult to pull off. It's fascinating to me how a scenario like this could have actually happened back then, the S.E.5a pilot opting not to shoot the damaged D.VII down and instead escorting him back over the frontline. Indeed, there were many recorded instances where pilots of the era would grant their enemy mercy if it was clear that he was no longer a threat. I find it very sad that such honorable actions in wartime have long since died out.
Yes true, but I didn't have use of the ailerons and balanced with rudder and throttle. There was enough surface area to keep it flying as long as the airspeed didn't drop too much. Many years ago I gained my commercial pilots licence, so have a reasonable understanding of the principles of flight. There are instances of aircraft loosing wings or large surface areas and continuing to fly.Sadly it crashed, but the JAL 747 many years ago was bravely flown for sometime with large surface area damage
Definitely recommend the DVIIF. Its very forgiving and can be flown at very low airspeeds. Very handy if you can force faster planes into a dog fight. They either end up over shooting you or stalling and crashing. As you can see in the video, it still can fly with hardly any wings left. It was a balance of throttle and rudder that kept it going.
Was great to meet you on ROF. I've spent two summers in Wemeldinge, Zealand as a base for travelling around Europe a couple of years ago. Awesome country Netherlands. Did you see the video with ROF Sarge?
yes saw it between fighting in FC, will take my time and watch it again lol. But your vids are way more proffesional then i made. Cool you've been here!. Have never been to New Zealand although it seems to be a beautifull country
Ha yes, we had been slugging it out all night. We are pretty equally matched. He's got me in a chase, but if I could force him into a tight dog fight, I usually came out on top.
I'm not sure. I never played the demo. I bought the Rise of Flight Iron Cross DVD Edition from day one. I then bought extra planes and maps when the sales were on.
I meat letting damaged planes go free even though it mean they might shoot them down another day but what you said too XD Would you recommend the DVIIF by the way, i am thinking of a purchase.
you are lucky that much of the wing was left, typically when the wing busts off the whole thing shears off and there is no more wing on the other side to maintain flight, but i have seen Fokker DVIIs and DVIIFs with entire wing sections missing fly before, i remember one time i shot both lower wings off a Fokker DVII so it was pretty much a mono plane, and it still flew well enough to maintain flight, and then one of the top wings folded and it fell. pretty durable airplane the Fokker DVII.
Nice act of mercy from your nemesis... I salute his human attitude. A lot of people would have shot you down with an easy kill for their stats. Nice flying too, these crates are not so easy to fly, and even worst when crippled.
I always seem to get myself into one of these shenanigans..... I fly mainly the Fokker Dr. 1 but I always manage to lose at least half my surface area and fly home, It also helps that i fly in a group 90% of the time! P.S. Do you still play this game? I know this comment is old but the Wargrounds server still holds a decent population most of the time! Mike
Mike H hi Mike. I haven't played for a long time. Mostly World of Warships and a little GTA V. I should come back on and play a few games. RoF is an awesome simulator.
I bought it from a shop here in New Zealand called VR Concepts. If you live in the States, look it up on Amazon. Its about 35 bucks. I've got a pretty high end machine, but a reasonably fast machine should be fine.
haha awsome flying, I love how he escorted you back to your airfield, it must have been scary having him on your tail. in fact, I would have done exactly the same. there is no honour in shooting down such a severely cripled plane like yours. this reminds me of the incredible story of franz stigler ((heres a link for you)) ruclips.net/video/_8EkmyoG83Q/видео.html
no problem at all. I love it when people on the internet show respect to each other instead od screaming and raging to each other, like in this video. ;)
It is possible, but in reality very unlikely to succeed. Mind you, the aircraft was recovered from a spin after it was hit by flak and by balancing the throttle and the rudder it stabilised the plane enough to fly straight and level.
Don't kid yourself: Events like letting a crippled pilot go with a salute, the cruise of the Emden, Christmas in the Trenches, etc. were celebrated precisely because they were so rare. In most cases, they would shoot the other guy down, or at least force him to land. However, it's also true that such honor has not disappeared. There are examples of it throughout history, from ancient times up to and including modern-day warfare.
i have landed with simmlar damage , but im in aww of how long he flew it like that and my hats off to the other pilot who did not take advantage of the crippled plain . you both fly with hunour
So sad that most videos you find of Rise of flight are 5 -6 years old,i still play this game weekly and or a few times a month (playing it right now),its that awesome, guess cause I'm a single player there are so many missions and things to do i never get bored, actually i enjoy it more than all my new IL2 games, there is something about flying these kites that really puts you in touch with the machine versus going 370 mph,i still love my other games but Rise of flight is one of my top 3.
Is it real............The prototype for the Fokker D.VIII !?!..... well to be fair the germans already had the Eindecker Fokker EIII (also a mono plane)
Nice vid but if this is possible in ROF, the flightmodel is broken. Hope you realise what would happen to a plane fragile as those Fokkers if it had lost so much of its flying surfaces?
Thanks for watching. In real life, this would be virtually impossible, but within the game, it still wasn't an easy feat to keep this aircraft airborne for so long. I was certainly sweating at the end lol!
Yes I did, I should have said so. Looking up the video. I am on a quest trying to get the word out about the Spandaus and the Fokker DR1's and DVII's somewhat peculiar (but probably with good reason) method of getting the cartridges away from the airplane. Although trying to educate more people about the use of 30mm parabellum ammo belts (two hole) for the Spandau's in aircraft, but that is not important in computer gaming.
+Kerdav 24 I run war thunder on a semi-broken stop laptop with Windows XP as the OS. You can run WT on practically a potato, and even then it looks fabulous. But high quality settings can put a strain on some most computers. (Also it's not really a flight sim. There's a simulator game mode, but in all honesty it's literally nothing in comparison to RoF, DCS, or even BoS.)
you know, i wouldnt believe something like this would ever happen, but then i remember hearing about an F-15 having loosing a wing and was somehow able to not only fly back to the airbase, but also able to land it safely
Streamers were used by flight/squad leaders so other pilots know who to follow in case the ID was not visible enough. They were used on the struts or/and on the rudder, in different colors depending on the plane type and the squadron.
Yes that would be great. And to throw a surprise in at the end, the pilot that escorted his adversary home gets shot down by his own sides flak by mistake and killed. Two veteran aces shot down on the same day which could symbolise the end of chivalry as the war continues into a new age of modern warfare.
And an enemy SE5.a is flying as almost an escort. He knows he could shoot you down no issue but he chooses not to. He deserves a salute as well.
+Berzerker531 He sure does :) Thanks for watching.

this reminds me of the incredible story of franz stigler ((heres a link for you)) ruclips.net/video/_8EkmyoG83Q/видео.html
Nono Spelfanaat Great video and incredible show of respect between two WWII warriors. I shared it to my Facebook page. Thanks for the link.
no problem at all. I love it when people on the internet show respect to each other instead od screaming and raging to each other, like in this video. ;)
so were could i get this game from, and do u need a good gaming pc
Thanks Mike. I hope you enjoyed my other ones too.
Man thats awesome!! I guess the fokker wasnt such a bad monoplane after all
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it!
Yes, I totally agree with you. Thanks for your comment and watching
i have landed with simmlar damage , but im in aww of how long he flew it like that and my hats off to the other pilot who did not take advantage of the crippled plain
. you both fly with hunour
Thank you for your comment! I got lucky and quickly recovered the aircraft and soon adapted my flying to what little flight surface area there was.
Knights of the sky....Fly with honor!
Wow that sounds cool. I'll have to look it up. Thanks
It would have ripped the rest of the wing off in a heartbeat.. I do believe that had the juices pumping indeed, thats some nice flying
Not to mention an impressive career mode!
Well flown gentlemen, well flown
Thank you very much.
Awesome, epic!! I hope someday I can fly half as well...
Nice video. The best flight sims seem to have the most terrible landscapes. I love DCS and RoF so much, wish they had landscapes like ARma.
What’s the green ribbon for?
Streamers were used by flight/squad leaders so other pilots know who to follow in case the ID was not visible enough. They were used on the struts or/and on the rudder, in different colors depending on the plane type and the squadron.
Yes that would be great. And to throw a surprise in at the end, the pilot that escorted his adversary home gets shot down by his own sides flak by mistake and killed. Two veteran aces shot down on the same day which could symbolise the end of chivalry as the war continues into a new age of modern warfare.
