Btw just wanted to tell that everything the narrator said about Canute disbanding his army and the ships, that actually happened if I'm not wrong. The real King Canute, who was the king of Denmark and England, during the same time period specified in the show disbanded his army for whatever reason.
I think so too but it seems to me like many people dont want to try to fully understand the philosophy potrayed here because it's still very hard to forgive and feel empathy for people that harmed you in any way. At least in my experience it changed other people's perspective less than I expected. But I just love it that there is such a big community of people now who have this mindset nontheless
Most people don't understand why Canute just booked it without hesitation, but he's seeing something in thorfinn that is unbelievably amazing, a path where even the most despicable savage that is a Viking can change for the better. It's the most pleasant surprise to him and after that moment, King Sweyn is no longer haunting him. There's another way to paradise other than his bloody path of the crown.
I think Canute saw something he never knew existed: hope. The idea that the strongest thing a warrior could do was to walk away just changed his whole world. Thorfin learned this from Thors almost too late. Canute learned it from Thorfin just in time. More than anything, I believe Canute understood his wars could never gain anything as valuable as a life like Thorfin. No matter how much he conquered, the loss would be too great.
it's also gotta be so refreshing and a heavy weight off Canute's shoulders to find out that it's not just the floating head of King Sweyn that understands him, there are men like Thorfinn out there that understands him too and that he could talk with them without having to utilize underhanded methods to get them to see his point, it has to feel very isolating when the voices in your head are constantly telling you that you're alone in the way you think, especially when constantly surrounded by simple Vikings with no higher ambition themselves, in a way Thorfinn is his second ever friend after Wulf, so of course Canute is elated
Just finished it and I watched her reactions after watching 1 episodes or not 2 episodes and now that I have finished this series I am disappointed that mappa is gonna release season 3 of it like 2026 or not more late bc there is no release date of Vinland saga season 3 nor a trailer so it's gonna take like years to see season 3
That pledge in front of Arnheid's grave, Snake giving his real name, Gramps giving last lessons, Olmar working his farm, Pater having hope... they really hit all the beats in this episode. Carve it... this is such a happy episode and yet can't help but well up every time. Such a beautiful episode.
I love how we come full circle - we start the season with the "Carve it" poem , at the time it felt different to me and then we end this season with it, but after the experiences of season two the poem has a different feel to it. Ep 1 Season 1 titled: Somewhere not here, and then we have Pater say "Someplace not here" during this episode.
Thorfinn also says to Canute during their talk "somewhere that's not here", and the ost playing at the end of this episode is named "somewhere not here", another ost in season 1 is named "somewhere else". (weak manga spoiler below) And after season 2, in the manga, these words were said a lot. I love the subtle insistence on Vinland, mentioning it all the time yet not clearly.
This episode is one of a kind. Getting this cathartic release is proof of how much Yukimura values the story, and how the animation expands the emotional beats. Powerful stuff
It's just wild how many moments there are like this in the story where it feels like it's reached the absolute peak of your emotions and then it consistently one ups itself. Yukimura is truly in another league, I also recommend his previous manga/anime Planetes I would describe Vinland Saga as a jack of all trades that has somehow managed to master all of the individual trades. It's got drama, action, philosophy, humor, and emotions. A lot of stories they're good at only one or a couple of these. Anyway I'll stop gushing over it now
@@irecordwithaphone1856I agree. As a manga reader, Vinland delivers in every way. Even when people may get angry at first with certain characters, Yukimura sticks to his principles and trusts the process....
The greatest episode of Vinland Saga to date imo. The whole episode elevated the manga content, something really difficult to do, especially in this arc. I was an emotional mess when I first watched this, and I have to say I'm not any better rewatching it 😅 VINLAND SAGA IS A MASTERPIECE!!!
This is my favorite episode of Vinland Saga, I’ve rewatched this over and over and it hits me every single time because it truly is beautiful in its message. It shows how powerful the acts of selflessness and strength in meekness. Thorfinn listening to the Bible being read and hearing Jesus say to love your enemies, then putting that into action and seeing the results of it completely change the trajectory of Thorfinn’s life from “nothing good has ever happened to me” to literally changing the world around him as his influence on Canute created ripple effects that brought some peace to a world of war and slavery, the lives he affected on the farm to live out their true purposes because of the impact Thorfinn had on them, finding a true brother in Einar, etc. This was my favorite piece of art of 2023, not just anime, favorite thing I consumed. And I have a feeling this will be something I go back to over and over. I feel like this episode made me a better man for having watched it. I’ve never had a show speak to the deepest parts of my heart like this because I want a world where people thrive. I don’t have the strength that Thorfinn shows in this but I want to be able to not have any enemies, better yet I want to be able to love them like Jesus did. This arc touches very close to the fundamental elements of the Gospel and the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross to save me (an enemy of Him) and redeem me by His love because it’s so beautiful I can’t help but be changed by it. I went on a little tangent there but I absolutely love this show, I went and read the manga after this, which is the first manga I have ever read. There is some great stuff still ahead in this and beyond I’m sure but this farm arc was healing to my soul. I’m happy to see the love for it as well.
The last frame of your video is simply your face, with heavy eyes, and a small contented smile. Pretty much everything about this series in one image. Thank you for sharing your reaction to this wonderful story.
I don't think any show has given me as much hope and optimism in life as Vinland Saga, which you would never expect for a tale of vikings. It's such a healing story. I can't watch this episode without tearing up
that was intentional. the author chose the viking era because we associate it with an abudance of violence and bloodshed. thorfinn is a human. humans are naturally good and kind. even for one who dreams of valhalla, it is not impossible for that human instinct of cooperation and empathy to shine through
Vinland Saga is one of if not the best redemption arc among all the Animes that I have seen. I really love the growth of Thorfinn. Even the side characters are very well written. From S1 with Askkelad to S2 with Canute. Not to mention all the other minor characters like Old master, the son of Ketil, Snake(Roald) who stood by his master's side ready to die knowing all along that his master was a con man, Arnheid, who became one of the many reasons why Thorfinn and Einar departed for Vindland, Einar who would become Thorfinn's closest friend and companion even beyond S2, and of course all of the many great characters that I was not able to mention
I love Olmar's line "someone strong and kind like you. A REAL man." This whole arc is about overcoming toxic masculinity, and equating kindness with strength.
this has been my favorite reaction, you really understand the story on a deeper level, and you grasp all the little pieces and put them together into an even more beautiful experience Vinland Saga is the best anime I have ever seen :')
This is one of the best series ever. I'm glad the manga got such an amazing adaptation and was spread to the world. Yukimura sensei is a kind man, and his work should be read/watched by many more people.
In a weird way Thorfinn is Canute's weird proof of turning the vikings into something good. Truth is most of these men also went through tragedy, saying vikings don't deserve to find peace could be said to thorfinn as well. The methods will always be flawed but we should always respect any human life and make sure we exhaust our options when we can. It's funny to hear thorfinn saying "I never thought of helping the vikings" while he's a viking himself and been through his own process of "healing".
A beautiful episode with an equally beautiful reaction. Thank you for taking this journey with us Alana(and Miso ofc😊). I'm so glad you decided to watch Vinland Saga, it holds a special place in my heart. Even though I can't wait to see your reaction to the final episode I can't help but feel a little sad its coming to an end.
this anime and its theme is unique in its form, for some reason it showcase the reality of life where people can change no matter how deep or far from the wrong path they made. Everyone deserve peace even in midst of war. 😊😊😊😊
The last words of this episode "Someplace that's not here", are basically the name of the first episode. I would have been satisfied with this being the finale, it just tied up pretty much every theme and plotline in such a great way, it all came full circle. Like, this series finale is just sooo good that I wouldn't even be too upset if they ended it here and don't adapt more of the story, because this ending is so well done.
thorfinn was the only one who could talk to canute back then besides ragnar and now he still is, amazing how it all came back around. the light shot of thorfinn while canute talks about him being beautiful gave me hope
That sassy attitude of "don't make more work for me" with his arms crossed and head tilt back as if he's talking down to Canute (also funny cause Thorfinn is supposedly a shorty) is just a fun reminder of him poking at Canute in the cart ride in the first season. And here, Canute just smile and accept like friends and not a king to peasant. This to me shows how that even though many events had transpired and their statuses had changed tremendously, neither of these two had changed as people. At least not in each other's eyes.
Finally here! This is my favorite episode of all-time, period. Never have i ever felt the emotional gratification this episode gave me. Soup for the soul.
00:24 My, the stretch that Miso gave against your face, while you were holding and scratching him (or her, because I really don't know whether Miso being a male or female) was so cute! So, I really like your reactions for these kind of moments.
My favourite episode of Vinland Saga, the fact that it was a happy and optimistic ending was a nice refreshment to all the sadness of the rest of the series
Thorfinn's journey from the absolute depths of misery where he lamented that he never even bothered to learn the names of the people he killed, all the way to the joy of learning the name (Roald) of someone he "saved" is beautiful.
You cut the bit when Olmar is praising Thorfinn and Thorfinn gets back at him by saying he was so ready to stop the fighting by surrendering, while it took so many years and two seasons for Thorfinn to do it. Such great writing.
canute just needed a friend. his loneliness and too focused sight was changed by thorfinn's cooperation and unchanged friendship. only thorfinn could do this...
Loved the reaction. I am so happy you watched this show. Vinland saga had a really big impact on me and how I view the world. Its message of like radical pacifism really touched my life
That last poem, carve it.. was used in the frist episode of season 2, if you watch again, there the carve it part was meant to signify "war" now after the journey it meant for the "work"
I don't think it was "meant" to be for either, it's a poem and you get to project it to anything. This show just showed how you can have an outlook where you think of violence and then change to have an outlook of peace and rebuilding, considering how radically different the same poem feels after extra lessons and context. It's beautiful in either case. I keep thinking about it months after seeing this episode and then rewatching the poem at the start. I love the icelandic reading of it, and it's hard to really translate "rista" to English, "carve" is probably the best way to do it, but there's some extra meaning there that is hard to explain.
One thing I think people don’t always realize about Snake telling them his real name is how thematically well it fits. Snake and his band are refugees - fugitive outcast warriors - their animal names are protection from their criminal past. Thorfinn and Einar left such an impact on Snake that he trusted them with his identity. That type of trust is necessary to build the world Thorfinn wants to build. Lasting peace without warfare or slavery requires trust in diplomacy, words, and above all people. That trust from Snake is monumental.
Back when I watched season 1 while it was airing, I didn't care much for it. Sure, I liked some moments a lot but it didn't impact me. Decided to wait till the whole 2nd season was out for a while and after watching it, goddammit, the series is just incredible, what a way to make a redemption arc. Already up to date with the manga and it is now one of my favorites of all time.
Canute's decapitated ghost dad Looked At Thorfinn. That I think is the only time the head took notice of anyone other than Canute, and that conversation is the last time the old dead head is around to speak poison. Canute has seen in Thorfinn a new way to be a man and a leader. The toxic voice of his father's example doesn't have an uncontested audience in Canute anymore, because Canute has the example of Thorfinn to hold up against it and know which way he'd rather choose. It's beautiful.
Love this show and the many symmetries. The "Carve it" sequence at the beginning of the season can be read as slashing and killing, while this one at the end can be interpret as plowing the land to plant and farm. And the symmetries between Canute and Thorfinn's journeys, toward the same goal but opposite methods. Canute abandoned the teaching of God and Christianity, while Thorfinn eavesdrops on Snake reading the bible. And so many more.
The icelandic word (which I cannot spell so I'll use the Swedish spelling instead) "rista" has additional meaning that is hard to translate well. Carve is the literal translation, but it's also used for writing runes as you had to chip away at stones to write on it. You can conjugate the verb into a noun ("rista" » "ristningar", "carve" » "carvings") and maybe it is clearer that it's related to ancient texts and art. Scandinavia has idioms like "rista in" ("carve in") to mean affecting things at a deep level. It has no violent connotations as I feel "carve" could have. Maybe because English is my second language, but to me that word always felt a bit more brutish and violent, almost bloody. I don't get that at all from "rista". Any other Scandinavians here feeling the same way? 😅
@@Mankepanke Nice, thanks for the insight! It's great to have a piece of media that overlaps so many cultures and languages and leaving us with open reflection of meanings we can each arrive to ourselves, while being able to inform each other. I think my interpretation of the "carve it" double meaning stems from the prominent theme of the entire season, where I was curious of the direction the mangaka was taking, to place this story heavily around farming. And then realized the poignant and poetic metaphor of planting/growing/caring for lives instead of taking/destroying lives. This show/writing is incredible.
@@dh5363 I agree. Started watching Vinland because I wanted to see a Japanese take on vikings (almost for the lols) but the respect that the mangaka shows really blew me away. It's a supreme level of writing and I keep raving about it to a lot of friends now. Oh, and I also realized that maybe it's not obvious why I started to write about icelandic and Scandinavian things there, but the poem in the first episode is read in Icelandic with Japanese text on screen (and subtitles on top of that), so there might be up to three levels of translations there depending on if everyone translated the poem or the Japanese translation of it. 😅 I was really surprised when I started season two and they started to speak Icelandic at first.
@@zaidali4754 She just voiced her reaction in the moment for the scene. lol She has been analyzing Vinland Saga thematically this whole reaction series, so I think she knows the floating head is a visual symbol for storytelling.
knut want to have a paradise on earth and a paradise dont have kings so he must be the true and only king and after his goal he let other live in peace, thorfin wanted to creat a world of peace just like knut so both has same goals but different ways, both ways you need to go c not everyone will understand thorfins hippy vibe and not everyone will understand knuts brutal killings, one goes left one goes right and they fill the world at the end with peace....thats the plan so far

One of the greatest creations of human beings

My try not to cry to ep 23 challenge: failed once again
Canute's decapitated ghost dad Looked At Thorfinn. That I think is the only time the head took notice of anyone other than Canute, and that conversation is the last time the old dead head is around to speak poison. Canute has seen in Thorfinn a new way to be a man and a leader. The toxic voice of his father's example doesn't have an uncontested audience in Canute anymore, because Canute has the example of Thorfinn to hold up against it and know which way he'd rather choose. It's beautiful.
Man....what a great series.
Canute and Thorfinn encounter had something special.
It's not something direct but i feel like Thorfinn creating this peaceful place we live in
Peakland Saga for a reason
Forget how beautiful this episode was, I swear to God if vinland saga don't win Anime of the year I'll have nothing to with crunchyroll never in life.
I really i mean really think if whole world watched Vinland saga and even tried to understand it , it could lead to World peace 😂❤
Just the best masterpiece ever
I didnt think id get this invested in a reaction video sense i dont watch any of these kind of videos
I was really surprised when I started season two and they started to speak Icelandic at first.
Thorgil probably swam after their ship to fight Thorfinn for stealing his battle with the king away from him lol
Someplace that's not here,
Almost like the first episode of the first season name 🌄.
This show is so good
Yeah masterpiece character development
i would die for miso
I’m reading the manga now and oh I’m so glad they got rid of puffy face Thorfinn for the goodbye scene to Roald and them. 😂
👿 Not the kind of tears I wanted... but tears, nonetheless.
But, in all seriousness, this was an epic uplifting ending to this arc. 😇
Este es el verdadero mensaje de Vinland Saga.
MISO STREEEETCH 🥺💗

Alana's feelings:
«Canutee... is a bitch! ok??.............. 23 episodes later
I just want to like hug him uwuwuwu!»
the head of Canute's father is just his subconscious
Well of course there isn't an actual floating head of his dad. lol
@@raec5426 I'm telling her this because she said leave him alone...not for you, smart boy
@@zaidali4754 She just voiced her reaction in the moment for the scene. lol She has been analyzing Vinland Saga thematically this whole reaction series, so I think she knows the floating head is a visual symbol for storytelling.
@@zaidali4754I'm pretty sure in a previous episode she acknowledged that Canute is seeing him because he feels bad
your cat is SO F*%$ING CUTE!!!!
knut want to have a paradise on earth and a paradise dont have kings so he must be the true and only king and after his goal he let other live in peace, thorfin wanted to creat a world of peace just like knut so both has same goals but different ways, both ways you need to go c not everyone will understand thorfins hippy vibe and not everyone will understand knuts brutal killings, one goes left one goes right and they fill the world at the end with peace....thats the plan so far
Naah man Vinland has so many REAL men. Askalad, Thorfinn, Einar, Snake, Thors ,Canute, Olmar, Lief. Role models ngl
What happened to the reactions of a sign of affection?, did she drop bro?
