Askeladd is one of the most memorable characters in all of anime for me. From villainous antagonist to an irreplaceable father figure for Thorfinn. RIP Askeladd. The show won't be the same without you.
Yh and I love how the author reminded us throughout the story that although, he's basically the MC for s1, he's still a really shitty person. But given how well he's written, u just can't help but like him.
“Stand straight...this part is important. This moment on stage was created for you. Don't waste it." I love that line by Thorkell, showing that he may act goofy or dumb, but he grasps the current situation.
Seeing him naming Vinland his #1 of all time made my day, knowing just how much this man loves Aot. Even if the ending of Aot might change matters once again, I'm still glad Nick recognized the greatness of Vinland Saga.
@@firstaidsack . I as well have my problems with the manga ending but from the rumors that were running online some months ago, I hope with all I have that Mappa will provide us with an anime original ending that would respect Isayama's legacy 'til the far end imo.
Yup, bro Vinland saga is just some true masterpiece. Both Vinland saga and Aot are my not just fav but very special animes because they are really close to me. I can't choose any one but if you ask me which one is better then it's Vinland saga, but if in the ending they change something actually good then aot will be a masterpiece as well. You can say aot is just 1 step behind from becoming a masterpiece.
So many reactors drop Vinland Saga because of low views so I am really glad you stuck with it & finished season one! Glad you acknowledged how great this show is! Looking forward to next season!
@@jaxen231 He does it for money too lmao his reaction formula is the same for every anime: 1) scream real loud 2) wipe his dry ass eyes as if he's crying 3) miss all important info and pretend like you understand
When I first saw that scene I had so much chills! That was the first time watching an anime I said, whoever came up with that should get a huge raise! 😂 such a beautiful way to end the season.
It’s amazing how the author was able to take Askeladd, an absolute fucking bastard of a person (though that’s kinda the norm in his time), and make you feel so much for him in so many different ways, easily in my top 3 antagonists in all of anime. Also, if you haven’t already seen, the author’s Twitter interactions with his fanbase are so wholesome. Like one time he was talking to a fan on their birthday, and then gave one of their favourite characters their birthday (him finding out what GOAT means was also really funny)
When the priest talks to Canute about what love is it’s one of my top 5 moments from the show. How he says “Ragnar didn’t love you” and that “it was discrimination”. It was an idea that never crossed my mind before, and it is amazing how humans can wrong others or do hateful acts in the name of stuff or people that they love. Even on a small scale of putting someone above everybody even yourself isn’t actually rooted in love. Also with the apple scene I think it’s referring to the story of how god gave Adam and Eve a whole garden and the only thing he said not to eat was the apple, and when eve ate it humans lost there purity. Also thanks for all the great videos, after a bad day of work could always throw on one of your videos and laugh past the day. Keep up the good work man.
Yea I hope he rewatched this epsiode so he can understand canute better and the parallel between a true warrior and a king. Also what a king is meant to do in canute eyes because god fails to do it.
I had a similar journey as Nick, started with AoT. Then watched Demon Slayer and JJK. Loved the fights and animation, but when I discovered Vinland the story was everything to me and made me pick up the manga. Hearing him say it was his #1 made my morning 🙏
@@elinor-gr3uo What do u mean? Bcs of lack of action? I dont think this is a problem when story, characters, art and music is gonna be top tier. This is not shounen dude if u watch vinland saga for action is not for u.

Canute didn't have a "sudden change of personality" as many could say - what he had built was a new resolve under the light of the trauma and the talk with Priest Willibald about love ("ai"). When you look back at how Canute is aware of the need to act cautiously and how each step he takes could mean his survival (as a noble and as a human life), it makes sense that his initial decision was to stay as invisible as possible. He was aware that his father didn't see a ruler on him and was kept alive as a "backup" in case his brother Harald couldn't inherit the kingdom - which means that, anyway, Canute received the same level of education as Harald and was forced to train and study all that was expected from a Danish royal, even if he disliked, but he was prepared to be king IN THEORY. This is why Canute had Ragnar as an instructor, a Christian, as well a priest by his side since the Church had amounts of knowledge on literacy and related skills that would be advantageous to a ruler. As Canute was a frail child and second place to Harald, and studied a lot, he became a very smart and observant man that only lacked self-confidence and any actual reason to fight for the Crown. Askeladd probably was able to grasp all that when he invested in his bet, despite the uncertainty on Canute's behavior, he could be a King if Askeladd could shape him into one. For Prince Canute, however, it was easier to keep avoiding being seen, and he was protected on his escape wish by Ragnar until... Ragnar was out of the way. After Ragnar's death, Canute didn't feel just anger and sadness but also pressure, as he had no other to hide behind and avoid dealing with the awareness of his politically delicate position. Aside from being killed one way or another, there was nothing else left for him, no supporters, no options. When he states after waking up that "there's no one else alive in this world that loves me", Canute expresses resignation of his nothingness, as he believed that Ragnar, at least, allowed him to keep running away from the problems he knew all along. The shift comes from Priest Willibald's piercing question about love. Willibald is doubting his faith (as we saw in the chapter he, Ragnar and Canute mourned and prayed for the villagers murdered by Askeladd's band), and he's looking for a miracle by the concept of love (ai) he's trying to abstract from Christianity's teachings. According to Willibald, this concept of love is different from concepts such as liking, enjoying, preferring, feeling attraction, or bound by affinity to someone. This "ai" would be a general feeling of love, regardless of who or what, so wide that it leaves no space for hating, discrimination, or damage. In this sense, what Ragnar felt towards Canute couldn't be called love, since he showed preference towards Canute's life to the detriment of the sixty villagers' lives taken by their omission. Willibald called Ragnar's feelings 'discrimination', as Ragnar didn't value all those lives equally, preferring the Prince's over others. Canute contemplates this statement, understanding that, given how humans will always discriminate and feel hate in their hearts, in detriment of their loved ones, this concept of love is unattainable by them, and therefore the absurdity of God in expecting the humans to do otherwise. When Canute has this insight, he abandons his delusional wish to escape his fate as a Danish royal and builds a resolution to claim his right as the second heir to the King. What does the concept of love and rebellion against God's tests have to do with Canute deciding to pursue the Crown? Royal power like that would give him resources to actually enforce his plan to save the hateful Vikings from their innate misery. His personality - introspection, oratory, intelligence, tactical thinking, finesse, and morality - didn't critically change, but his resolution did. As he started creating the idea of Paradise on Earth to counter God's impossible trials by design, Canute found confidence under pressure to impose himself, enough to cool down a Berserker Bjørn with a non-violent act. What I find fascinating is this little miracle felt to Willibald like the concept of love he was looking for materialized in front of him, restoring his Christian faith, while Canute basically turned against God's demands.
I'm really a huge fan of the scene where Canute is talking to the priest about love... there are so many different philosophies at play there. like, in any normal definition of the word, Ragnar loved Canute like his own flesh and blood. but the priest brings up the 62 villagers that Ragnar watched get slaughtered, just to keep Canute safe. he calls this discrimination... a selfish type of love, where your own priorities are placed above anyone else's. in a way, Ragnar's willingness to let others die for the sake of protecting Canute is the same as the type of love that would lead someone to seek retribution in anger. it's self centered. when the priest describes love, he is talking about a more holistic version... the kind of love that god must've felt toward humanity, in order to give them the world, in all its beauty. and the way that love is reciprocated when we die and return to the earth... all things are fair in that. but this lofty idea of love isn't very satisfying when you consider all the earthly pains that exist too. all the war, and the agony. it's interesting that, at this point, the conversation cuts off, and we go back to watching Thorfin fight. in the case of both he and Canute... they've each experienced the incredibly painful loss of a parental figure. the amount of pain caused by that death is considered to be tied with the amount of love they felt for the person they're missing. and look at what Thorfin is using his love to justify... Thorkell doesn't really have anything to do with this, and if he's left alive, Thorfin might even learn more information about Thors. but that part is so secondary, compared to the conditions set forth... if he can kill Thorkell, he can get to Askeladd. think about how much destruction Thorfin has justified to himself, just to stand where he does now. it's also interesting to note the garden of Eden metaphor with the apple... Canute grew up in idyllic conditions, which were maintained by Ragnar, out of his sense of love. many people call this out as having been a privileged existence, and a mistake which made Canute weak. but I don't think it actually is a mistake. that had to come first. Canute ends up different than the rest, because he knows what he's fighting for. his war is not endless, pointless, or incomplete... he is familiar with the idyllic conditions of his childhood, and understands that this is what he feels the urge to return to, deep down. _this_ is what he wants to achieve in the end. and all that he really gains from having his eyes opened, is the knowledge of what it will take in order to make that dream a reality. he's not doing this for revenge. revenge is a hollow, empty experience. it's a dead end. he doesn't try to kill Askeladd, even after learning that Askeladd killed Ragnar. and when Canute happens to kill Askeladd anyway, he doesn't feel personally gratified by it... he wants to offer Askeladd's death to Thorfin, because it clearly means more to him. Canute's own goals go beyond the death of this one man. this is Canute's form of love, toward his people. this is what makes him different. Thors understood it. that's why Thorkell recognized the look of a true warrior in his eyes, even... no, _especially because_ Thors was retreating from the battlefield, to go and raise his daughter. he'd found a purpose. something that went beyond himself, or his pride. and he wouldn't find a fight for the _benefit_ of that purpose with the vikings anymore. and somewhere, buried deep within Thorfin, he knows this type of love as well. he can still dream of his childhood, and he still thinks of Vinland. when Thorkell talks about the look of a true warrior, I think this is what he means. to understand Eden, but also, to have bitten the apple, and experienced the horrors of knowledge. and then to continue persisting anyway, clear in the purpose of your fight. the goal of peace beyond the war. that's what makes a warrior well rounded. Thorkell can't understand this... war gives his life purpose, so he chases battles like a desperate fool. but Thors understood everything, and when he fought, it always meant something monumental. if Thors was convinced to fight, it became a legendary occasion. the truth is, you can't see the whole picture if you've only ever been on one side of the fence, whether vicious war, or idyllic peace. the saddest part is that Askeladd was close to knowing everything too. he held on to the legend of Artoreus in Avalon, and kept it in his mind, in a very similar way to Thorfin's idea of Vinland, or Canute's metaphorical connection to the Eden of his childhood. the concept existed for Askeladd, but the true nature of peace never quite reached his heart. at least, maybe not until the last minute. throughout his life, his warriors created hell on earth, over and over again, wherever they went, and Askaladd hated the Danes he traveled with, but it never dissuaded him. in some ways, he led a miserable life, the entire time. it feels like, if Avalon was truly an inspiring force for him, then he compromised too much. and eventually, amidst all the atrocities, he created someone like Thorfin, who is like a mirror of Askeladd's worst tendencies with all the filters stripped away. Thorfin is revelatory of the flaws in Askeladd's life, right down to the way he's conducted himself this whole time. and in all honesty, it's probably better that Thorfin didn't get to kill Askeladd. it's better for Thorfin to understand just how empty and worthless that particular pursuit always was. in the end, Askeladd wasn't some monster... he was human, including every atrocity he ever committed. and even if it was dissatisfying, who could complain about the way his life ended? who would have the right, after all of this?
I STILL think Vinland Saga S1 has one of the greatest final episodes of a season that I've ever seen. I remember going through the same range of emotions you did here haha. I still highly recommend the series to anyone. Really really damn good show.
This is the only anime where I feel like the characters not just get a character development, they transcend to a higher level of being, beyond their human flaws, beyond hatred. It's really unique among all other anime I've ever seen.
When I finished this season my jaw was dropped for 5 minutes, and I couldn't talk to anyone about anything for at least 30 minutes because I was just processing what I had seen. It's definitely one of the best season finales I have ever seen
The first time I watched Vinland Saga I didn't feel to emotional throughout the first season, but the dagger being dropped teared me up. After watching it I decided to read the series, after catching up I rewatched it with my brother, and this time when the dagger was dropped I was balling.
Yes, this was just the prologue and the real story starts now. You'll love Thorfinn's evolution and growth. I can't wait to see your reaction to his brotherly relatioship development with Einar (the guy at the end on the boat). Reading the manga is a total delight.
[OBLIGATORY GOLDEN KAMUY RECOMMENDATION] I really do think it's relevant to mention here this time... simply because I think both are competent historical fiction. idk, I've made my various recommendations before, but I just keep seeing parts of these reactions that make me think that this would suit your tastes really well too... or legitimately surprise you. anyway, congratulations on getting caught up on Vinland Saga! it's nice to see you get current on another series. ^_^
Im so lucky that i found your yt channel 😭😭 I have watched this anime in 2019 when it first came out, but bro rewatching it again with you was such a great time. All your reactions were majestic, you made me laugh so much. Thank you❤🤌
I lost my shit at the end of this episode too when it said "End Prologue" I immediately went out and picked up the manga and am now up to date on it. At first I didn't think I was gonna enjoy the next part as much as this but man it's so damn good!
Just in case if you don't know Vinland saga won the best anime award in 2019 and it's created by WIT studios the studio who created AOT S1 to S3 , i love this anime and S2 is currently airing hell yeah i am excited
The Vinland and Vagabond manga's are two of the biggest gems written and illustrated in all manga. Both are philosophical gems that can lead you to a better life. That is astounding. Following both Thorfinn and Musashi's journey from a teenagehood of violence and wrought for power into a life of peace, mental willpower and the ability to control ones emotions, alongside leading a purposeful life, it is beautiful to follow that journey, and I genuinely hope both series will at one point have the entireties of both manga's given a worthy adaptation. P.s i hope these aren't considered spoilers by Anime watchers Synopsis from Vagabond: "Vagabond is the fictitious retelling of the life of one of Japan's most renowned swordsmen, the "Sword Saint" Musashi Miyamoto-his rise from a swordsman with no desire other than to become "Invincible Under the Heavens" to an enlightened warrior who slowly learns of the importance of close friends, self-reflection, and life itself."
The last episode has me in tears every time I watch it or read the manga. I'm obviously sad that Askeladd dies, but also realizing that Thorfinn just lost his goal for the future and his father figure in one day FOR THE SECOND TIME!!!! My heart breaks for Thorfinn, especially because the voice actor does a great job portraying just how lost and broken Thorfinn is now. I can't wait for the next season. Nick is going to absolutely love all the character growth and depth happening there.
I still remember when i watched Vinland Saga , i wanted to see other people's thoughts and went to youtube to watch their reactions. But I only found a few people watching it and wondered why this show is so underrated. Glad seeing many people are watching and reacting to it. Ready for season 2
I'm glad to be one of the few who stayed through this season 1 reaction and I gotta say, looking forward to s2 weekly reactions. You'll have my view since I enjoy the dedication you put into this series that doesnt get that much views
BASED for having Vinland as your #1. And now that you said the fight with Thorkell wasn't your favorite part of that episode but the slow introspective moments with Canute I know you're gonna be part of the people that absolutely love Season 2 even more than the first. Next season is gonna act like a filter, separating the people that only care about anime fights from the people who want good story and character growth. In those aspects, season 2 outclasses season 1.
You've finally finished the prologue. S2 is gonna air soon. S2 is going to adapt only 1 arc since it's a pretty massive arc. And it apparently has one of the best arcs in manga according to some people. There will be little action but it's gonna focus on character development, especially for Thorfinn. I can't wait to see it.
I was about 12 years old when I discovered Vinland saga, Tokyo ghoul and Monster. I was a shonen kid back then I so was impressed by such storytelling in manga. I am now finishing Vinland sag and I can tell you Nick that its an absolute masterpiece. Even if you consider yourself stupid, I consider you as a very smart person. Keep it up.
DUDE I LOVE YOUR TASTE. Vinland Saga is my favorite anime of all time with attack on titan right there at number two just like you LOL despite having watched hundred of shows.
Yeah when I first got into anime I thought nothing would ever top attack on titan for me, then I experienced this masterpiece and I felt like my outlook on life had been forever altered. I could rant about this show for days that's how great it is. It is the best piece of fiction I have ever consumed and the rest of the manga is absolutely perfect. S2 is going to be phenomenal and potentially the best season of any anime of all time.
Dude, then please check out Sonny Boy. It as well is and underrated masterpiece that can alter the way you view reality. Though it doesn’t have action in a sense, each episode is incredibly thought provoking and relatable in a way most will probably not understand until they grow older and have more life experiences. Hell, even I didn’t understand all of it haha, but from what I did get, left me literally speechless for days on end. So please give it a shot, it’s not for everyone but regardless just please try. This show is a once in a lifetime experience, and in my opinion the best piece of storytelling, philosophical media and entertainment out there.

MASTERPIECE !!! This anime is pretty thrilling it is pretty different than any other anime because every character plays a major role my favourite characters are - 1 askeladd 2 thors 3 Prince canute 4 thorfinn 5 thorkell And the character development is the best the fight scenes will give you goosebumps with awesome animation and CGI the story telling is amazing . For me it was the best anime of 2019 and I can't wait for season 2 . And the ending scene was just fantastic . And it was just the beginning real thing will begin at season 2 but still the main story begins at ep 4 . So go and watch it , it has only 24 episodes in season 1 And season 2 is coming in 2023
I would be happy , but at the same time I like how they dedicate themselves to niche series to give them the right light , especially when they make original series ( like Great Pretender , fantastic ) , something that unfortunately is missing in today 's Japanese animation , which concentrates more and more (I'm speaking at the level of "stellar" productions) on shonen jump series, established authors, etc...)
Vinland Saga is the first anime in 20 years of watching the medium which made me to buy and watch the Manga! Absolutely incredible. The Soundtrack is one of a kind. The same composer for Tokyo Ghoul (Unravel opening & Glassy Sky) Love your reactions. I'm hyped for S2 af.
RIP Askeladd, one of the best characters in all of anime. Brutally murdered his own father, the father of his essentially adopted son, and the father of the future king whom he placed his faith in. Mercifully killed his own best friend, who he also hated because of his viking culture. Cunning, strong, charismatic as fuck. The man literally RODE A BOAT ON LAND to capture a fortress, just to have some extra pocket change. Women wanted to be with him, men wanted to BE him. So complex, and in many ways actually a terrible person - but you can't help but love the guy and want to be on his side. The dropping of the dagger in the end symbolizes Thorfinn abandoning the sword and becoming a true warrior. Truly outstanding storytelling by the author.
Askellad basically killed everyone's father/father figure; Thors, Ragnar, King Sweyn, and himself (aka Thorfinn's 2nd father.) The man has consistency 💯 *_”The Daddy Killer”_*

I've withheld from reading the manga for the Farmland Arc for sooo long. I agree with most emotions you felt throughout each episode. This is a true masterpiece, and I await the next season which has been hyped up beyond limit lol.
Quick explanation for Askeladd's help in Thorfinn's fight against Thorkell, Thorkell has photosensitive epilepsy, and one way or another this got triggered at some point while Askeladd was watching him fight years and years ago, hence why he knows about it.
I dont think it was epilepsy. The light was just to blind him in the moment so he didn't notice Thorfinn. I think he just has a glass jaw, it's not uncommon with people as big as Thorkell, and no matter who you are a good hit to the jaw is going to rattle the brain-strong enough and it'll KO you for at least a few moment. Odds are on that battlefield Askeladd saw him take a hit similarly and we see the outcome
@@suzuxiiiahdv it seems more like he was shifting his weight more so than actually collapsing-the funny look on his face isn't that weird considering when I get a light in my face I look a bit strange for a moment or two as well. Even in the manga it seems more obvious its the actual chin/jaw that is the issue and not the light itself, but I have been seeing some people debate this after the anime and the author never reeeally comes out and says which it is so it could be argued on either side
Deadass I agree Vinland Saga it's #1 for me atm. It's way more than just the fighting and action and more about true inner growth and conquering your demons/past. As a Manga reader; I'll say you're going to freaking love season 2. Jan 9th. Can't wait to watch with you. Gonna subscribe to watch your future reactions.
I am so glad that you continued this anime, I know people are asking you to react to so many different shows and this one wasn't as popular to begin with (not sure how it's doing for you now), but it's been a pleasure to see you fall in love with this show as much as I did.
I didn't remember they show Gudrid in the end of season one, cause I read the manga after finishing the season. So happy they did, she's my favorite character! Also, Vinland Saga's my number 1 too, what a masterpiece!
Attack on Titan was my #1 until I saw Vinland. I adore AoT but every single element of Vinland Saga hit home for me, soundtrack, characters, the story it was all just perfect.
54:38 This scene of Thorfinn dropping his knife has more depth than most Anime do AS A WHOLE… when Chapter 71: Oath gets animated u will start to understand
i don't know if i would rank vinland saga higher than snk, but it definetely diserve the place you gave him. This kind of piece truly shows why manga is art... I don't care what people say about our reactions, like talking to much, or faking it : I love watching you react the same as I did. be sure I'll keep on watching ur videos.
The entire journey youve had has been amazing to watch, but this last batch of episode ESPECIALLY. Seeing your emotional reaction to the ending of the epilogue was peak.
Vinland Saga is extremely underrated, its characters are complex, the music is amazing, the animation, everything is just awesome, truly a masterpiece of an anime
I'm so glad to see you understanding and appreciating the parts of the finale that aren't just action. You're going to need this appreciation for future parts of Vinland Saga that won't always be very action-heavy.
When Nick put Vinland saga above AOT, that made me realise he doesn't watch anime just for action and animation. And that made me so happy to see him love Vinland saga so much. Its one of my fav manga/anime of all time.
I feel the same way. I only watched Vinland Saga last year and it immediately became one of my favorite anime ever. And this was just the prologue. The fucking prologue. I am beyond hyped to see what the next arc has to offer. Very excited to aboard this journey along with you!
It took me four times to get through Vinland Saga S1. It just wasn't my thing for a while. However once I finished the first season I knew it was something special. Since then I binged the manga and am caught up now. This series is incredible and easily in my top 5 all time in terms of anime/manga. I cannot put into words how excited I am for this arc in season 2. Looking forward to your reactions Nick.
34:55 That right there is EXACTLY who askeladd is!!! He is a man, living in an unfamiliar time. He is not special. He is not evil. He is a man who does what he must to survive and protect the ones he loves. And in the end he sacrifices himself doing just that. The true main character of season 1 everybody!!! Also I could go on and write a 10 page paper about the meaning behind “the what is love speech”, the symbolism, and how that ties into being a true warrior. Man I love the writing in this show SO MUCH!!! If you want to hear about that I will write it all out it just might take a while. Lol
I just realized that they foreshadowed Hild, Gudrid, and Einar in this season for future buildup. I lost that piece of detail, glad I saw his reaction to realize that detail.
fully agree with you. attack on titan was my number one for quite some time, but then i watched vinland saga. the way so much was fit into one season but kept a perfect pace was amazing. every moment that needed to hit, did in fact hit. askeladd shot up to my favorite in a matter of like three episodes.
*Askeladd* is one of My Most Favourite Anime/Manga Antagonist of All Time, He's Soo Freaking Well Written that we went from Hating him for killing Thors to Crying on his own Death cuz He's the MVP of Season 1 & I Can't wait till Season 2 starts cuz it's gonna follow My Favourite Arc from Vinland Saga & if they'll adapt it Properly then it's gonna be 10/10 🛐 Also, I'm Really Glad that Vinland Saga is your Most Favourite Anime rn cuz among all the Anime Shows you've watched, nothing came close to it in Writing except FMAB!
Thank you for watching the video till the end! I saw your reaction and fell in love with this anime. I am grateful that I was able to learn about this anime, and I was happy to see your reaction until the end. However, there is something I want to say about the OP for the second song. At first I thought it wasn't very good, but as I continued to watch it, I came to realize that it's a very nice song that matches the story in the second half. The first song is a song that expresses an epic story, world view, and Thorfinn's anguish. The second song is a song that expresses the instability and intensity of each change of mind and rushing into turmoil. I felt that way, and I really liked both OPs, and I also like the ED. I was happy that you listened to the OP again at the end, but I think you would have liked it more if you listened to it a few more times😊 I'm also looking forward to the reaction of season 2 ♫
Askeladd is one of the most memorable characters in all of anime for me. From villainous antagonist to an irreplaceable father figure for Thorfinn.

I as well have my problems with the manga ending but from the rumors that were running online some months ago, I hope with all I have that Mappa will provide us with an anime original ending that would respect Isayama's legacy 'til the far end imo.
Fully agree i love those both also with Chainsaw. The greatest sait three.
Just wait he will changed again his number 1 of all time again, and AOT ending would not gonna change but probably will get some extra scenes

WOW!!! Thorfinn dropping the blade MIGHT BE the greatest ending to a season finale.
Just wow

Btw it's similar to EP 1 when Thors dropped his sword, very similar haha, what an anime❤🔥
And foreshadowing some future characters.
When I first saw that scene I had so much chills! That was the first time watching an anime I said, whoever came up with that should get a huge raise! 😂 such a beautiful way to end the season.
True it is my 3rd favourite after aot s4 part 1- 2 and season 3 to 4
It’s amazing how the author was able to take Askeladd, an absolute fucking bastard of a person (though that’s kinda the norm in his time), and make you feel so much for him in so many different ways, easily in my top 3 antagonists in all of anime.
Also, if you haven’t already seen, the author’s Twitter interactions with his fanbase are so wholesome. Like one time he was talking to a fan on their birthday, and then gave one of their favourite characters their birthday (him finding out what GOAT means was also really funny)
Yeah he thought they insulted him lol what a gem
Yukimura is GOAT
@@dobber43 lmao I gotta see that

The symbolism of Thorfinn letting go of his fathers blade was masterfully done. A true warrior doesn't need a weapon.
Glad you enjoyed this show! Really hyped to see the FMAB reactions resume again!
I had a similar journey as Nick, started with AoT. Then watched Demon Slayer and JJK. Loved the fights and animation, but when I discovered Vinland the story was everything to me and made me pick up the manga. Hearing him say it was his #1 made my morning 🙏
If you think that the prologue was a masterpiece, the second season will be double masterpiece.

Canute didn't have a "sudden change of personality" as many could say - **wordily breaks down his new personality**
If you ever want to check out the actual philosophy that Willibald is trying to teach, check out Agapism.
SUMMARIZE IT IN 20 WORDS OR LESS
A lot to read but pretty much yeah, best explanation ive seen tbh
@@dillonmackay683 Basically Agapism. You can google it
I'm really a huge fan of the scene where Canute is talking to the priest about love... there are so many different philosophies at play there. like, in any normal definition of the word, Ragnar loved Canute like his own flesh and blood. but the priest brings up the 62 villagers that Ragnar watched get slaughtered, just to keep Canute safe. he calls this discrimination... a selfish type of love, where your own priorities are placed above anyone else's. in a way, Ragnar's willingness to let others die for the sake of protecting Canute is the same as the type of love that would lead someone to seek retribution in anger. it's self centered. when the priest describes love, he is talking about a more holistic version... the kind of love that god must've felt toward humanity, in order to give them the world, in all its beauty. and the way that love is reciprocated when we die and return to the earth... all things are fair in that.
but this lofty idea of love isn't very satisfying when you consider all the earthly pains that exist too. all the war, and the agony. it's interesting that, at this point, the conversation cuts off, and we go back to watching Thorfin fight. in the case of both he and Canute... they've each experienced the incredibly painful loss of a parental figure. the amount of pain caused by that death is considered to be tied with the amount of love they felt for the person they're missing. and look at what Thorfin is using his love to justify...
Thorfin is revelatory of the flaws in Askeladd's life, right down to the way he's conducted himself this whole time. and in all honesty, it's probably better that Thorfin didn't get to kill Askeladd. it's better for Thorfin to understand just how empty and worthless that particular pursuit always was. in the end, Askeladd wasn't some monster... he was human, including every atrocity he ever committed. and even if it was dissatisfying, who could complain about the way his life ended? who would have the right, after all of this?
im gonna miss askeladd so much, he carried season 1 on his back.
ur gonna see him again :P
Well I don’t because Thorfinn Carie’s even harder then Askeladd did he just has the best character development
I STILL think Vinland Saga S1 has one of the greatest final episodes of a season that I've ever seen. I remember going through the same range of emotions you did here haha. I still highly recommend the series to anyone. Really really damn good show.

P.s i hope these aren't considered spoilers by Anime watchers
Synopsis from Vagabond:
"Vagabond is the fictitious retelling of the life of one of Japan's most renowned swordsmen, the "Sword Saint" Musashi Miyamoto-his rise from a swordsman with no desire other than to become "Invincible Under the Heavens" to an enlightened warrior who slowly learns of the importance of close friends, self-reflection, and life itself."

BASED for having Vinland as your #1. And now that you said the fight with Thorkell wasn't your favorite part of that episode but the slow introspective moments with Canute I know you're gonna be part of the people that absolutely love Season 2 even more than the first. I could rant about this show for days that's how great it is. It is the best piece of fiction I have ever consumed and the rest of the manga is absolutely perfect. I hope WIT can come back with some bigger anime names soon, their animation and direction was something else
Exactly!
They give their all to the animes they make.
Vinland Saga is the first anime in 20 years of watching the medium which made me to buy and watch the Manga! Absolutely incredible. The Soundtrack is one of a kind. The same composer for Tokyo Ghoul (Unravel opening & Glassy Sky)
Love your reactions.
Truly the type of character that captures a special place in your heart and stays with you for a long, long time.

I've withheld from reading the manga for the Farmland Arc for sooo long. I agree with most emotions you felt throughout each episode. This is a true masterpiece, and I await the next season which has been hyped up beyond limit lol.
I couldn't keep my promise. I caved in, best decision I've made for reading a series.
@@anastasiayager2476 You can see him begin to collapse before even getting hit
Gonna subscribe to watch your future reactions.

i don't know if i would rank vinland saga higher than snk, but it definetely diserve the place you gave him. This kind of piece truly shows why manga is art... I don't care what people say about our reactions, like talking to much, or faking it : I love watching you react the same as I did. be sure I'll keep on watching ur videos.
I respect this being your number 1. This show is a masterpiece. Its EASILY in my top 10 and I don’t see it leaving any time soon
The entire journey youve had has been amazing to watch, but this last batch of episode ESPECIALLY. Seeing your emotional reaction to the ending of the epilogue was peak.
Vinland is the best written manga and anime around. Incredible series.
Vinland Saga is extremely underrated, its characters are complex, the music is amazing, the animation, everything is just awesome, truly a masterpiece of an anime
truely one of the top 3 manga i put for me. It can be put along side with berserk and vagabond.
Aot isn’t about action and animation, just like Vinland isn’t.
I suggest you to watch legend of the galactic heroes
I feel the same way. I only watched Vinland Saga last year and it immediately became one of my favorite anime ever. And this was just the prologue. The fucking prologue. I am beyond hyped to see what the next arc has to offer. Very excited to aboard this journey along with you!
Day 27 of asking Nick to react to Re zero
It took me four times to get through Vinland Saga S1. It just wasn't my thing for a while. However once I finished the first season I knew it was something special. Since then I binged the manga and am caught up now. This series is incredible and easily in my top 5 all time in terms of anime/manga. I cannot put into words how excited I am for this arc in season 2. Looking forward to your reactions Nick.
I love your reactions, cant wait for JoJo's!
Me too my friend... THE TIME HAS COME!
End of Prologue... Vinland Saga just hits different
Lol
Thorfinn’s blade playing his story with slow motion and the music just describes the show itself, most breathtaking scene
I just realized that they foreshadowed Hild, Gudrid, and Einar in this season for future buildup. I lost that piece of detail, glad I saw his reaction to realize that detail.
Im almost crying here bro, what an last episode...
fully agree with you. attack on titan was my number one for quite some time, but then i watched vinland saga. the way so much was fit into one season but kept a perfect pace was amazing. every moment that needed to hit, did in fact hit. askeladd shot up to my favorite in a matter of like three episodes.
*Askeladd* is one of My Most Favourite Anime/Manga Antagonist of All Time, He's Soo Freaking Well Written that we went from Hating him for killing Thors to Crying on his own Death cuz He's the MVP of Season 1 & I Can't wait till Season 2 starts cuz it's gonna follow My Favourite Arc from Vinland Saga & if they'll adapt it Properly then it's gonna be 10/10 🛐
Also, I'm Really Glad that Vinland Saga is your Most Favourite Anime rn cuz among all the Anime Shows you've watched, nothing came close to it in Writing except FMAB!
I was happy that you listened to the OP again at the end, but I think you would have liked it more if you listened to it a few more times😊
I'm also looking forward to the reaction of season 2 ♫
I'm suprised you now have vinland saga at number 1, but at the same time I'm not surprised, it's just that good.
