Rediscovering Wah for the last 18 months after a number of years without one have to say a big thank you to Mick and Dan because until watching this video I have always accepted the way the switch worked and never thought about how to adjust it. Simple to do when you know how!
I bought the Boss Wah pedal you guys have on the very left, and I personally love it and don't plan on switching anytime soon. Best pedal I've ever bought.

Hi guys. you had the drive control on the BOSS V-WAH turned up. Even when in bypass mode the sound is effected. It needs to be set to zero to get a clean unity sound, maybe that's what it was 'adding'. 😀
@@gravitymusictuition they didn't like it, they were scoffing and rolling their eyes at it. Yet, it was their fault in the settings. Good job pointing out their ineptitude and snobbery, op. They were wrong.
I like the 535Q . The cry Baby Mini is also a great choice for a crowded pedal board. I still have my original Thomas Organ circa '1967(?) Cry Baby, purchased when I was 12 or 13...and it still works.
Guys this is the one episode where i think the use of a white board and perhaps a pocket protector would have been acceptable :-). keep up the good work. That pedal show is how TV should be...
Great show! My favorite channel on RUclips! I’ve been using a wah for many years. Mostly crybabies but also a few others. When I finally bought a fulltone Clyde standard I was smiling from ear to ear. I have found the perfect wah for me. No wonder Robin Trower uses one.
Best wah I've ever used is the Ibanez Weepin' Demon. It's the best pedal of any kind I've ever used, infact. It's my desert island pedal. It has several knobs to tweak the sound. It has the auto-return when you take your foot of the pedal it goes off. And it sounds absolutely brilliant.
Hahahahahaha, so I was typing on FB, and came back to this video, that I had been listening to the whole time, and saw, Dan and Mick, with Angus Young styleish SG's! LOL aww now I gotta actually watch the whole thing, boo me getting distracted!
Just in case anyone's wondering "Q" stands for "Quality" and is usually described as being higher when the frequency band is tighter, I tend to think of it like a knife, a higher quality blade has a finer, sharper point. Bugged the hell out of me through college until I went and looked it up!
I have owned everything from vintage Colorsound, Jen/Vox/Thomas Organ, Cry Baby, etc, to the modern CAE MC404, Clyde, Budda, ... you name it.. The winner is the Dunlop Slash SC95.. something about the frequency ranges it hits and the smoothness of it just plays nice with every guitar, amp, and genre of music. The thing is fantastic.
Wah enthusiast here. Great inspiring show. Please consider the The Real Mccoy RMC8 and RMC6 models. Also there seems to be lots of love for the Dunlop CAE Wah. And keep doing Dirt pedal episodes it is pure nutrition for rock guitarists.
I have a 1969\1970 Vox Wah and a 1976 JEN Double Sound (fuzz + wah): the Vox is nasal, vocal, cleaner and slightly "thin", perfect for Hendrix style stuff, the JEN is bassier and dirtier, but still very articulate, it has more "balls", I'm Jimmy Page when I play that wah! ;) This to tell that are the same quality, they come from the same factory...
Great show! Just a few examples of great Wah pedals. The Dunlop 535Q, the Morley Bad Horsie, and the RMC Real MCoy Picture Wah. I happen to have these great wah pedals and my fav has to be the RMC. Mine is signed by Geoffrey R. Teese himself! It absolutely SCREAMS! Keep up the good work guys!

I have a VOX V847, Morley Bad Horsie, and AKAI Vari-Wah. I love them all. I use the Bad Horsie the most, because it switched on/off automatically. The Akai does some really cool stuff, it can do some unusual wah effects. You can control the speed of occilation.
22:24 That explains why my vox HW and my band of gypsies fuzz face don't play to nice together they both produce extra gain than normal. I have the boss Waza craft tuner i "tried" to use as a buffer but i am redoing my board and i realized i didn't have the buffer selected but I'm going to try that in between the two to get them to sound better
I've had V Wah since it first came out, and it's incredibly much more broad than what's shown. You can customize the range of attack from shallow to super deep. The stock settings you guys are showing are very shallow. If you take 30 minutes to learn how to use it, you can create all those wahs on the board. My only issue, and it might just be mine, but it seems to cut out the sound when it's turned off and on. Might need to do a factory reset to correct that. I also forgot the built in Uni Vibe, Suppressor, Vowel simulator, and multiple Distortion pedals. It has four presets, so you have four different modulators in one pedal... and a suppressor! C'mon brobinos... Get your shit together. hahaha
Same, I have had it for 20 years or so? My only issue with it is I wish the built in boosts, fuzz, distortion, could be set up to turn on once the wah is engaged rather than always on.
On the vwha take the intensity knob all the way counter clockwise. Changes alot. It also does roto and distortion/fuzz as well. It may not sound as good but it is a lot of fun.
Man that was unfair to the Boss V-Wah. I own five wah pedals - MXR MC404 CAE , Dunlop 535Q, Dunlop Jerry Cantrell, Vox V846HW Hand-Wired, and the Boss V-Wah.You cannot expect the Boss to sound just like the original but when you start using the other options it has like the Bass Wah, Advanced Wah and creating your own custom wah sounds like it lets you do it is really very good - it is its own thing and to my ears currently its right up there with my other Wahs.
@@jon590 I just bought the MC404 CAE and if you like to tweak things lightly (moving the Q, adjusting the pedal sweep, etc) it’s absolutely incredible. First time I saw a wha on trumpet was not so long ago with Snarky Puppy... I was like "waou, such a great idea!". But I didn't know it was done before nor it was one of the origins of the wha! Thanks!
Great episode! I really enjoyed the hand wired VOX! I went from a Hotone Soulpress to a Fulltone Clyde to now using a Cry Baby Classic Wah Wah GCB95F and darn if your episode didn't have me wanting to go out and buy a new wah! I still have the Fulltone but really have no idea what to do with it....really shrill I adjusted everything I can and aside from having it modded I figure I should sell it?
Guys, thank you so much for this vid, I learned heaps! Now I understand what the various knobs on my Ibanez Weeping Demon actually do to my signal and have managed to come up with a great sound that is perfect for me! Cheers! -Tom
Killer as always! Looking forward to the in depth signal chain discussion about how to deal with fuzzface/wah/buffers/etc. and the heal down squeal issue. Maybe go with basic Vox or Crybaby. I appreciate what you do!
I thought that its not 100% TS type pedal, maybe its because mick's epic facial expression is in there.. lol great design nonetheless and cheers to you, sir
I have that Boss wah, and it was really difficult to turn it off and on, it required so much force... I skimmed the rubber studs and now it's perfect. Along with the wah I use it for the univibe which I find quite good. I have it set up so that I can change between wah and univibe with the heel switch.
Now that I've watched the whole video, I can say that you can calibrate the pedal travel to your liking, and it looks like you are keeping the distortion modelling on, so no wonder it "adds something". Just twist the drive know all the way down.
I once asked an engineer “Why Q for bandwidth?” The response was “because BANDWIDTH” was too big to squeeze between the knobs on a mixer. I was later told that Q stands for “Quality” and goes back to when the highest quality filters had a very narrow bandwidth, while delivering high amplitude. Hence, a high “Q” meant high quality, narrow bandwidth, high amplitude, even though a low Q contains a larger selection of frequencies.
Big Jim Sullivan guested on the Bay city rollers TV show. Shangalang. Inspired me to get my first electric. a £25 zenta. I still recall the one when Eric jammed with Jim on a white strat and a fuzz pedal. I have a white strat now!!! Arrrghhh!! Just realised the link.
Wow These guys were mentioning 'Q' four years ago !! Where Wah Go One Wah Go All !! A great episode for those wanting to know whether to replace a pot or just go with something new.
Favourite wah of all time is the Ibanez WD-7. Its like a 535Q but with extra options (bass/guitar voicing switch, auto-switching or morley style footswitch)
For your Fuzz/Wah episode (if you haven't filmed it already) you should check out the Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Fuzz-Wah (JH-1FW) from Dunlop. The side switches allow you to choose Wah--Fuzz or Fuzz--Wah. You can use just the way or just the fuzz and there are knobs on the side and bottom to control each. I don't think they sell them anymore, but I'm sure you guys could get your hands on one....or make one. Thanks again for the show. Great episode.
Man! This show gets better every episode man! Maybe cuz I love wah's. Either Way really enjoyed this episode! At the moment am torn between xotic wah and Wilson effects ten spot! But goodness that Buddha wah! Also that SG! That glorious explosive gigantic sound! Man!....anyways Kul show Thank you guys.
Love Wah got a few over the years , but just recently Purchased a Boss PW 10 V Wah all in original box with manual , it hasn't been used at all not a scratch on it , the Shop wanted £59 I knocked them down to £50 , there is an awful lot going on with this pedal its not just a Wah it has lots of Boss Drives and Fuzz and a Booster and Uni-Vibe , fully programmable , you can mix and match effects and can save up to 3 of your own custom Patches . Its really fun pedal to use especially the Vocal Wah the "Oh Yeah " sounds great with a Bass Guitar plugged in .
Great video! Even tho I've been playing electric for ~24 years, I'm always learning something new. I had no idea that a fuzz pedal had such a massive frequency range. I read somewhere that fuzz pedals acted like a filter pedal and mixing a wah and a fuzz was like mixing to freq filter pedals. I never understood that. Your explanation about what a wah does before, and after, a fuzz pedal was really helpful and insightful. I think I like the sound of a wah going into the fuzz, as it keeps the guitar sound large, and doesn't shrink it - for reasons you already explained. And Daniel Steinhardt, does playing the wah bring your inner shred out? :D Good stuff!
I have a Thomas Organ made in Italy Vox wah that I bought used in the early '70s. Compared to CryBabys of the time it had a sharper "whack" to the upper end of the range. You could also slip the rack on the pedal a tooth one way or the other to change the range the wah works in since the treadle doesn't utilize the full rotation of the pot. Unfortunately about 10 years ago the Vox started making funny noises on occasion so I put it away and got a CryBaby 535Q which also has the variable Q control and could do both the sharp Vox sound and the softer CryBaby sound. I had a Univox wah in the late '60s that was optical but it had a metal flag between the lamp and photodiode with a V cut into it. Worked but had nowhere the sound of the Vox I got later on.
I own one of the OG Budda Wahs, I will NEVER get rid of it. Funny how the only reason why I bought it was because my friend i jammed with a lot bought a cry baby the week before and I didn't want an exact copy of it. It is my #1 pedal, and it still works... I use it often ( now with a helix lt). If i can figure out how to clone it, I'm going to retire it and put it on display.
Groovy and funky. Considering what a simple concept the wah pedal is - a sweeping frequency filter, it's amazing how deep the subject it can be. I like pedals that give you a few controls over Q and overall EQ, especially if they're mini. In future videos, it would be nice if you were able to borrow a few other wah pedals, especially those from smaller pedal makers.
Love The Pedal Show and I've only just stumbled across it. Two blokes I'd take out for a beer and a geek out Love it's geeky nature. Going to have to get a t shirt like Dan's. Just hope they do one for the more rotund gent. Thanks guys 👍🏻

Now that I've watched the whole video, I can say that you can calibrate the pedal travel to your liking, and it looks like you are keeping the distortion modelling on, so no wonder it "adds something". Just twist the drive know all the way down.
+luppa79 ah! Got it. Cheers Luppa
Fulltone Clyde wah would be good one to showcase.
Had tried it TWICE- never sounded as good as my vintage Thomas Organ wah, it just lacked character.
THAT DERICK TRUCKS SG IS BADASS, BEST SG IMO, PACKED TO THE GILLS WITH FEATURES
Hahaha!!!
Should've played some Trower! TROWER POWER!!!
Ok, my request of the week - what's the tab of that little like Dan does at 32:57 - now THAT is "AWWW-Some"
Got a jam wahcko and love it
Favourite wah of all time is the Ibanez WD-7.
"The way it wahs." Yes! That should be the title of these wah videos!
Best wah on this planet = Jerry Cantrell's Signature Wah, that thing sounds incredible, and it looks pretty too!
I have the Dunlop Crybaby Classic Wah with Fasel inductor love it
Great video!
The faces on those pedals are hilarious hahahahaha
No mention of reggae? Pete Tosh with Bob Marley! We're Jammin!
11:17 - Nice kicks, Mick! \m/
That bit around 33:00, where you're doing fuzz into wah really reminded me of Kirk Hammett for some reason... like something off the Black album. :)
Fulltone Standard Wah is the best Wah out there.
Lol... that face face Mick makes on the pedal... I guess he likes the fuzzy feeling inside!!!
and Dan is just gobsmacked seeing that..
Got the Buddy Guy wah. It's nice as all get out lol. Funky and soulful.
When is episode 2 coming out?
Id kinda like to revisit this guys
Dude. At 50:01 Dan's hand appears beside the board, and i thought that was his bare foot for 1 second and was blown the fuck away.
