The Tower of London is a must see on a London visit. I've been to the Tower of London twice and loved it both times. I personally I think the Crown Jewels exhibit is the least interesting section though since the queues are enormous and you will be hustled through. There are a lot of other things to see in the castle where you can take your time, do it in the order you like, or just sit on a bench a chill out. You will feel bitterly annoyed that you wasted time and money on any of it. There are plenty of decent museums, galleries and public spaces where you can really see London without getting ripped off by some tourist trap.
This is where I saw the Crown Jewels for the first time. It was 1977, and I was 8. During that same trip to England, I saw the Queen, as her car took her to Parliament. We saw a crowd lining the street, and a bobby grabbed me and my little brother, and brought us to the front of the crowd, just before the car drove slowly by. We were only about 1 metre from the Queen (who was wearing a peach-coloured outfit), and she smiled and waved right at us. I was disappointed that she wasn't wearing a crown.
I saw the jewels back in 1975 or 76 (can't remember precise date) in the Tower, and I also got within arm's reach of the Number 10 door (before they erected the gate security at the end of the road).

Those guards are all long dead now. They were old back then. Who protects all that with pensioners?
Yeomans are retired, distinguished, long serving military officers. They provide a deterrent by being there. A small deterrent, albeit.
The jewels are locked away in a vault at night.
The Yeoman live onsite too.
The Tower of London is also a fortress, literally. You have to scale the walls. Break into the jewel house, break the safe, all in a few hours, without anyone noticing?
Say you did that, you are going to have Scotland Yard, MI5, MI6, NCA GHCQ, Europol and Interpol on your back. All of their resources would be dedicated to apprehending the people involved.

"The institution of royalty in any form is an insult to the human race"
Mark Twain
Funny u say that considering it was the original form of government since the beginning of human civilization no matter how advanced it was or not there was a monarchy. Monarchy is an institution that existed in every civilization, it clearly works best for humans just like it exists in animals
