I think I was better off learning his songs starting at a young age rather than say Bob Dylan or other singer/songwriters. The negative part is I write alt-country/americana and usually it’s has simple progressions. The fact I refuse to write a G, D, C or Am run to b, c, g, d songs kinda hurts me in the field. I’m def a chord progression snob.
Agreed. Austin, Sean Daniel, and the tall man are the only youtubers I know that do Elliott Smith. Tall man’s approach is more for beginners tho. Not hating but i hate long tutorials.
Dude thank you for this. Just finished listening to Figure 8 (for the first time somehow) 10 minutes ago and am now obsessed with wanting to learn to play this song. And here you are. Great tutorial too, thank you! Great singing voice too, don't apologize for it.
Hey, you should know that I've looked at so many videos of the same tutorial and I cannot express how incredible your's was. You play it the most accurately based off of Elliott's live performance of the song.
Gonna save and learn. I bet majority of us that had Elliott Smith as our favorite artist learning the guitar while growing up hardly use picks and just play with our fingers/strum with our hands. lol. Learning his music was so eye opening and I appreciated everything he did. He inspired me to dream to become a singer/songwriter and tho I play a different style of music I still use my chord progressions to find the melody and don’t restrict myself to the open chords in the majority of classic country or alt-country. He also taught me how to finger pick through “Angeles.” When I was asked to learn Travis picking I freaking lost it and have yet to get my mojo/smoothness back while finger picking. Thanks for the video. Will sub.
Dude - thanks so much for this. Always loved this song and thanks to you I'm now playing it. I didn't quite get the end but you've given me enough to go from the track and work that out now. Cheers my man!
Hey thanks this was super useful. A couple things, 1) You look like Matt Christman, 2) elliott kept the B in that octave (and not the lower octave in the cover) because it's the melody! If you put it on the low A string the melody seemingly jumps and octave and it's really disorienting. Really recommend against the low voicing! But great work and easy explanation. I've been wanting to learn this one for years but your walk thru is what actually got me to be able to compartmentalize that damn riff. Thank you!
Interesting, are you suggesting that he kept the B string in standard tuning? I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m just wondering how that would work with how the song is played.
@@SoldAsIs in the chorus "everything reminds me of her" you go on about a cover where you play the b (note) in the melody on the A string (low voicing) instead of playing the b (note) in the melody on the G string (actual voicing of melody). From that a minor chord, playing the b (note) on the G string actually follows what elliott sings, instead of the lower B (note) on the A string, which jumps an octave and imo breaks the melodic line completely
@@bennwalton ahhh, that makes way more sense! Yeah, I like playing it the way that Elliott played it for sure. Also if you don’t mute the D string with the way she plays it in the cover it makes a minor third which makes it pretty grating. I was really happy when I figured out what he was playing in that live performance haha
Thanks a lot this was awesome! I just got a bit lost at that point you put your own message up saying you were confused. I’d love you to do ‘wouldn’t mamma be proud’ and ‘tomorrow tomorrow’ !
Simon Gunner yeah, I regret not rerecording that part haha I just didn’t realize that it was such a mess until later and didn’t feel up to re-recording it.
I started in april and damn i feel i'll never be able to play that riff at full speed I do practice scales an stuff but once i try to insert some hammer on or fast pull off into my playing everything falls flat ):
k definitely stick with it! I wish I would’ve started to take guitar seriously at that age. Just keep learning songs and practice scales (but not so much that you get bored of playing guitar, scales are no use if you don’t even want to play guitar haha)
Elliott was always so nuanced with his details. Trying to learn his songs sometimes can be frustrating but this is a great tutorial.

It's GREAT to see someone who clearly loves and respect the man's genius and skill.
Thank you brother

After rereading your comment, I don’t think that’s what you meant. Are you referring to a specific part of the song?
