Best thing is that through the entire scene not a single soundtrack was used except for the build up. Sometime not having any music actually intensifies a scene, giving it a hint of life-like immersion of semi-realism
Nothing ruins a good movie like putting on a shitty soundtrack to cue emotions. Movies that tell you what to feel by doing this feels less gritty. It insults the audience in a way, acting like they don't know how they should feel.

The amazing thing is that Jake Gyllenhaal is actually driving the car. It's not a stunt double, it's not a camera trick. They hired one of the best actors in the world, to play such a complex character, and the cherry on top of that is he is an insanely good driver? God, we love you Jake Gyllenhaal.
@@RobbiePfunder I agree with needing proof but USA today even said the same. Super impressive that he can drive like that and act lol www.usatoday.com/story/driveon/2015/02/11/car-chase-nightcrawler-dan-gilroy-jake-gyllenhaal/23239925/
I think at that moment he realized "oh fuck, I'm gonna hit this thing". You can see he has a little trouble weaving between the two cars once they crash. He's a sociopath, average life doesn't faze him, just adrenaline all the time but as soon as he's actually legitimately threatened he has to use everything he has to get out of it...and then get right back to the adrenaline rush.
The best part about this scene is the contrast in reactions from Rick and Lou. Rick reacts like, well, a human, while Lou doesn't even blink at the gunshots.
I also love the change in foreground and background between Lou and Rick. When Rick is focusing on the café, the background is blurred out and only the footage he is recording is clear. However when we cut to Rick, the foreground is blurred, aka the footage he is recording, and the background is clear, aka the actual café. This shows how Lou is genuinely living in his own mind, enjoying every second of this real life fantasy that he has set up, all on camera ready to be shown to everyone on the news. He doesn't give a shit how many people get injured or killed, in fact he sees that as an absolute win, as his footage will then get more coverage, meaning he will get more money and also more famous. Rick, on the other hand is very concerned with the actual reality of what is happening and what is about to happen, and he doesn't give a shit about his job. He doesn't want anyone to get injured or killed at all. It really sets apart these two characters massively, in one simple camera trick.
Funny thing is, this plays out quite realistically when it comes to the police side of things. There is such an attention to detail that you can even hear one officer yelling 'call it in!' before they radio for the shots fired.
Radio sequences during pursuit are so accurate. They used arjent lightbar with actual LAPD color set up, like you said this movie had some small details that are just impressing

Its so rare that a major picture like this has a director with the balls to have a huge/climatic scene like this, while resisting the urge to put in music. I'm not an expert by any means, but I have loved film my whole life, and one thing that will never fail to impress me/make me appreciate a director or editor is the decision to go with no music whatsoever. When done right, a huge scene like this without any ambient music and only diagenic sound is so much more powerful! Imagining this scene with rock music, or a standard Hollywood action theme probably would have ruined the entire third act of this film...
I feel the same way. No music is a great choice. No country for old men had no soundtrack at all and is one of the greatest films of the last 20 years!
Definitely agree with this comment. Another good example besides No Country for Old Men is the shootout in Heat. There’s a steady percussion through the whole heist helping build tension, then when they get outside the bank…the music is replaced with gunfire.
Honestly this was a surprisingly well done chase scene. Caught me by surprise when I first saw it. The director/cinematographer should seriously do more action stuff like this as they have a talent for it.

This was a really good movie that had a cool as hell premise and great protagonist. Protagonist doesn't need to be a good person or even likable but he has to be interesting and Lou is definetly interesting. I hated Rick died that way but it was pretty much inevitable from the first minute of meeting Lou that his life would be destroyed. I would like to see some more of Lou but I doubt that will happen unless he starts wearing a cape and some tights while filming the news that's probably the last we'll see of him.

Jake Gyllenhaal is absolutely astonishing in this, at times overwhelming! He stole every scene he was in. Carried the entire movie on his shoulders. The supporting actors were great also, but Jake was on whole another level in this film. This was his best chance at getting the Oscar, but now I don't know when he will get one. Since this film, there has not been one performance that he gave that could rival this. He was great in Southpaw, The Covenant, Nocturnal Animals, and Stronger, but those performances are not on par or better than his performance as Lou Bloom, he can do more as an Actor, he is truly capable at delivering something that could be considered iconic, his performances in Brokeback Mountain, Prisoners or Nightcrawler are solid proofs of that. I feel like since Nightcrawler he has not gotten a role that he could truly have a solid grip on and that would excite him as much as this one did.
