Sounds like my first moto-camping trip. In December 1979, I rode from mid-Oregon to a campground near Santa Cruz, California. I thought I was alone in the campground, but hey, I got a dinner invitation. Unfortunately, my dinner companion was a black bear, and I was to be the main course! I ended up spending a few hours in the outhouse looking at my 9mm wondering if it was enough firepower. Eventually the bear went away and I went back to my tent and had a good night's sleep. 20 years later, I was watching a Discovery channel show about the signs black bears exhibit when they have decided to go after human prey. I had a few butterflies in my stomach by the time the show was over!
Bro, I love how raw and real your video is. That bear was a big old "D". Lmao. I've seen them suckers at Allegheny State Park in NY. What an experience tho! I'm finally going on my first solo Moto camp adventure this coming spring. Thanks for the inspiration.
Oh my! You must’ve been starving the next morning. The breakfast you did have made up for it I would say. Other than the bear nice camp site. Glad you made it home safe. Thanks for sharing.
Shoulda started the bike and gave it a few Revs lol. But all seriousness, that’s pretty intense. I think you handled it fine, and good content man. Fresh sub here. Trying to get some ideas for my 07 street glide to take out camping
Ya that would have scared the shit out of me. And I don’t think my 380 would put a dent in a bear. But I’m pretty sure your supposed to hang your food up in a tree or a bear box at the site. Just don’t leave it in your tent or saddle bag if you want your bike in one piece.
Dude, great vid but you have to hang your food from a tree branch. If you were in Yellowstone that would of been a grizz and you would have used that gun. Conceal carry is now legal in our national parks. Never ever leave food out, your asking for trouble. Thanx for the vid.
Glad you survived. The gun you had would be better used shooting upwards and using the sound to scare the bear away. It you were to shoot it it’s very likely the bear would charge, it would just be pissed off. We have more bears than people up here in Canada and rarely camp with a firearm unless in extreme remote north. Most bears want nothing to do with people and will run away from your sounds before you’ll see them. Up here we take bear safety seriously and that means not setting your tent by a picnic table as you have no idea how food safe prior campers were. Ideally your tent never sees food in it, even minimal scented body antiperspirant should be used. Food is cooked a good distance from your sleeping area. If the fire pit looks like people have tossed in old soup cans and packaging you want to avoid that proximity as well. Once you’re done eating you should pack the food up in a dedicated thought bag, I use a dedicated dry bag that is never packed inside another. It’s on the very back of my bike. At night the bag is repacked along with stove and utensils and all hoisted up into a tree branch at least fifteen feet from ground, higher if you can, about 75 feet from your site. You could also use a dry roll top style backpack, then food can be inside with utensils and stove , pots etc can be kept in pockets. Then you have the pack for grocery runs. Like I said, bears leave you alone with simple precautions. If you’ve been eating and cooking inside your tent it’s a good idea to thoroughly clean the entire inside and outside with un scented cleaners and hang it outside to dry, turn it inside out and repeat entire cleaning of inside and outside again. Sun to dry completely. You were very lucky the bear was a nuisance bear looking for snacks that were piled high on your table. He was more interested in that than you. Your actions and likely those prior have habituated that bear into thinking he can snack there. Unfortunately that puts the bear in extreme danger as well as other campers and rangers. Up here we have few guns, we do have many bears, mountain lions and other critters, including school kids that we don’t shoot .
I would have shit myself seeing that Bear I'm glad you had a gun. It's times like that you're glad you have a gun and not thinking damn I wish I had a gun.
You have some guts. I would've packed up and left knowing that thing was near me the whole time.

Brother , you have to bag and hang all food items over a tree branch , if they don’t have bear boxes.
Yea I found out the hard way haha
