i didnt personally know Paul but I emailed him a number of times and he always responded which was awesome...Even until shortly before he passed...He sure helped me...
Love it! I do 1 light disc a year right before planting. Wasted so much seed and time trying to no till and or buckwheat method. Thought my soil was junk. Light disc and beautiful germination and food plots the last 2 years.
There are many ways to plant. This happens to be may favorite. Notill has its place with the right soil and moisture. Some of these clay grounds will not allow the buckwheat method to work very well.
I'm working on 2 no-till plots right now. I like your 2023 setup. With mine I'm seeding b4 terminating my Buckwheat over it. First summer here in central MN where we've had good rain in the last 3 years. I've had much better yields when doing it this way. My plots r smaller but when i get the right seed mixture i get alot of tonnage. I had 15" forage radishes last year but my plants weren't as large as they were like 3 years ago when the Buckwheat drowned out any weed growth that came to seed.
Good video, John. After 10+ years of plotting and most of a lifetime of farming, I run an 8 strip variation of this system on 1 acre. It's funny how I ended up with the same strategy and even the same equipment! Thanks for breaking down your planting for others to learn from. Wish I could send you some of our rain. We're drenched here in Vermont.
AWESOME SYSTEM !!! I will be using that myself for sure. Your a good man not taking credit for it as well. Glad you started doing videos. There's to many guys out there are full of shit or are really stuck on themselves. Thanks for your knowledge
Great information John. It's great for guys like me when you explain and show how you plant certain seed blends. My food plots are going to continue to improve thanks to you and your seed. Planted sweat feast brassica mix last week and had germination in 3 days. I run a 2 strip planting and will plant fall forage blend next week and then just wait for Nov!
This is one of the best food plot videos out there. Can you provide how much your lawn roller weighs for rolling the plot, and how you have it attached to the disc? Also, what rate were you spreading your fall forage and fertilizer? Answers to these would truly round out your great explanations in this video. Thanks and I look forward to buy more seed from you in the future!
Lawn roller is well over 200 pounds i have a hitch on the back of the disc to hook the roller to. I never noticed it until my son pointed it our a few years back lol. Fall Forage is 100 pounds per acre red clover is 8 to 10 radishes is 4 brassica is 6 peas is 100
Too late for me! I planted my sweet feast and my radishes July 26 and they are up and growing! If I have any open spots I am going to fill them in with WHS forage blend! Thanks for the advice!
Looking forward to seeing your results. On two 4 acre plots, I have 4 sections. 1 acre in clover/chicory in second year, 1 oats mixed with brassicas in a spring planting for a fall grain plot (doing great), 1 acre of soybeans, and a dedicated brassica plot. Keeping my fingers crossed for a big bruiser in November. What do you recommend over seeding on the soybeans when the leaves turn yellow besides rye? Ground is very firm, so wondering if your brassica mix would germinate?
I know this is old, but you caught my ear with the Liberty. Are you still using this? I was researching it and was getting ready to start using it. I did see some information about not planting brassicas for 70 days after use. Its not that it kills them, but they retain something from the spray.
These are the exact seeds that i just bought from Harpers. This is the first year for the Clover and Chicory, should i plant it with Oats like you stated?
Maybe frost seed the brassica side with red clover. In the spring/summer you will have red clover in one strip, rye and red clover in the other strip. Mow the rye before it gets too tall. Then in fall, you have red clover in both strips, till both in and start the rotation over.
Hi John, looking forward to getting your clover and brassica seeds in this weekend. You have a similar size food plot to mine. If you could gain 1/8 of an acre by removing red osier dogwood around the edges would you do it?It’s my only food plot and I have an adequate amount of browse on my property. Not sure how important browse is around a food plot.
Any concern with disease buildup planting brassica strips every other year and light radish on off years or is this enough of a rotation to keep disease down? My brother may be closing on purchase of land late August/early Sept. May be just enough time to plant something real late. Pure beach sand. Thinking of rye and red clover mix to get some green this fall and start a soil build. Any other ideas for a Sept beach sand plant?
Could you terminate the red clover by discing and spraying or do you need to till it under. Just looking at an option for the equipment I have and I do not have a tiller only a ATV disc. Thanks
What are your thoughts on planting buckwheat as a smother crop in last years fall forage section as an alternative to your berseem clover/oats/crimson clover mix?
High deer density. Heavy soil, black dirt with clay underneath. I live just north of Brad Harper. Just seems like oats and rye might be pretty mature by the time season is here. But it would be nice to put it all in at the same time

I appreciate the timing of this video. Going up Sunday Monday to plant.
Excellent information! Great video my friend. The blackboard screeching was worth baring.

Ya
The BS seems to be getting more and more these days unfortunately.
Just planted fall forage yesterday
Did my brassicas July 20.
I have always been happy with ur seeds.
We have heavy ground
Mid to N Mich
Thanks!
Hope it works out!

Paul's son Jesse has a great habitat podcast called Beast of Burden Podcast. Great guy.
Yes
Some great stuff he’s done
Very informative video. I may have to come back and buy some clover blend.
Good info John. Very simple and bullet proof. Do you ever mix a bit of buckwheat in with oats and clover to add a bit of organic matter?
We did this time because I had some that was spilled on the floor.
But you can add it
Too late for me! I planted my sweet feast and my radishes July 26 and they are up and growing! If I have any open spots I am going to fill them in with WHS forage blend! Thanks for the advice!
Great
Rye May be a better option if rain is limited.
The green blend will work with weekly rain.
Interested in the update videos for sure. Hopefully the pigweed don't sneak back up on ya.
Hate that stuff!
we will update all fall.

half the beans in brassica blend the other half in rye and radishes

Only my first spraying in the spring
I don’t use it in summer / fall.
These are the exact seeds that i just bought from Harpers. This is the first year for the Clover and Chicory, should i plant it with Oats like you stated?
yes that is a great option
Great video John. After you light disk do you spray anything to make sure the weeds don't take over?
No
Good video, appreciate the detail! What rate (#/acre) are you planting the red clover and radish with your fall forage blend?
we may add 50 more per acre
@@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 50# of clover and/or radish per acre? That sounds high?
@@thomaslaughery2962 100 pounds of fall forage , 8 pounds red clover, 4 pounds radishes per acre and we may add 50 more rye

Possibly
Some returning brassica May give off a weed killer (allopathic) and give the frost seeded clover issues.
But good strategy for sure

can you add more browse in the woods
Do you do a soil test each year for each section or one for the whole plot?
just where brassica is going to go

At radishes 4 pounds an acre plus the next spring and summer with rye and radishes, I’ve not really seen anything that. Would concern me.
Rye is a great fall starter on sand. Not sure how well the red clover will do.
HD screen question John. I think I may have mixed my pre emergent herbicide too hot causing a failure. Possible?
Yes
Very possible
Could you terminate the red clover by discing and spraying or do you need to till it under. Just looking at an option for the equipment I have and I do not have a tiller only a ATV disc. Thanks
discing can work
What are your thoughts on planting buckwheat as a smother crop in last years fall forage section as an alternative to your berseem clover/oats/crimson clover mix?
You can
I would add berseem as it will be organic nitrogen and it probably crimps the best of all the clovers
@@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 Thanks for that very helpful reply.
Great vid. Quick question. Do you usually apply fertilizer at planting? Or do you wait a couple weeks after?
Always at planting
@@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663awesome thank you
John is it best to plant cearal grains and brassica at the same time or have a couple week gap between plantings. Im in mid west Michigan.
depends on deer density and soils, moisture

@@johnhuls2695 if deer start browsing them quickly, they won’t have a chance to mature
Does fertilizer help 3 year old switch grass
It can
Will you essentially do radish every year?
yes a very low rate in the fall forage side
Do you still work with Jeff Sturgis
We still provide seed and food plot direction and help for many of their clients. But we do not have a partnership with the company anymore.
Get a white board, difficult at times to read your black board
we like the blackboard to be different
ill look for better markers possibly
Good deal..
Nice video
Great timing.
