I do dryer vent cleaning in So Cal and yes, you do have to use brushes for frictional cleaning in the vent. A blower or vacuum alone is not sufficient to remove all the lint. It is also necessary to access the roof to ensure the termination is clean and properly installed and working correctly.
I'm curious why you drilled a hole in the top of the vent? Why not just open the flap and feed the brush through that? The drill hole is a little easier but compromises the water seal. Seems you could do as good a job without the hole so I want to know why you would do that. Thanks.
Hate to be critical here but put a vacuum down below and you wouldn't have a mess on the roof. Also ... there are more flexible brush systems that can enter from the front instead of having to drill the top of the cap.
They make 1/2 rubber plug inserts for electrical, plumbing and other trades, drill your hole, clean, plug, place piece of foil tape over for added protection and move on
I’m pretty sure the ones you get from Hone Depot and Lowes are the cheap variety that can break easily when torqued with a drill. The ones he’s using are professional quality and very expensive.

That screen is to keep birds and mice out of dryer ducts.
It’s that vent has a hole in the top already?
No I put the 1/2 hole then I plug and tape it for future cleanings
