    Fun fact, David Brock in the late 50's was an acoustic busker and electric blues guitarist who took in a young Eric Clapton as a partner and taught him how to play. Eric recently played on their album and did a couple of shows with Dave.

    They provided the stage for Stonehenge Festival for many many years. Awesome people. Listening to them play as the sun goes down before the dawn with Stonehenge in background is something that will never be repeated. I am actually a huge reggae fan and one year they were joined by Misty in Roots on stage. Truly amazing night.

    Thanks for the name check, and tnx even more for your reaction to Lord Of light. The version on The Space Ritual is even heavier . The whole live album needs to be played as loud as your ears (and next door) will allow to get the proper effect of the distortion and down tuned guitar and bass. I went to many Hawkwind concerts in Liverpool, UK in the 90's when they sounded so dynamic and heavy with the main core of Dave Brock, Alan Davey and Richard Chadwick along with various fleeting appearances of other members (Ron Tree, Bridget Wisheart and Harvey Bainbridge). They really did have a huge sound and great show.

    Loved hearing that track again. Hawkwind were/are a band I adored because they weren't about the money playing loads of gigs for free. I remember after the vicious attack by the police on a group of 'New age travelers' in 1985 which became known as the 'Battle of the Beanfield' and can be found on Y.T -if you have not seen it you must as it shows you the police brutality that even the mainstream press found sick-seeing is believing!! Hawkwind played just off a lay-by in 1988 as we were trying to get to Stonehenge and managed to get two songs off before the police managed to unplug them. I remember one of the songs was Brainstorm and can be found on an album called the Traveler's Aid Trust where all the proceeds went to the travelers who tried to live a life free from social norms on the road. Unfortunately the government brought in draconian laws under the guise of the 'Public Order Acts' and changes to the benefit system which broke up the groups of people who wanted to live an alternative life on the road. Anyway hearing Brainstorm which is track 1 on the Travelers Aid Trust album captures a moment for free people as Hawkwind drown out the police helicopters. YESS!!

    Thanks for reading my post great reaction to this song. I discovered them accidentally, found "The Xenon Codex" in a cut-out bin and loved it. Then I bought the 4-disc compilation box set "25 Years On" which comes with a 100 page graphic novel featuring the band.
    That b-side 'Born to Go' is great too. I also like 'Brainstorm,' 'Space Is Deep,' 'Orgone Accumulator,' 'Sonic Attack' (a spoken word piece that instructs you what to watch out for in case of imminent sonic destruction and what to do), 'Psychedelic Warlords,' 'Angels of Death,' 'Shot Down in the Night,' 'The War I Survived' and 'Quark, Strangeness and Charm.'

  • @quarkwrok
    @quarkwrok 5 лет назад +13

    Hawkwind are seminal, original, essential, and defy pigeon-holing. They're still pretty prolific - most recent proper album was into the woods 2 years ago, plus the 4 before (Blood of the Earth,
    Onward, Stellar Variations and The Machine Stops) all released within 7 years. Style changes are plenty - its good that you're into metal, prog, and some classic rock like Supertramp, as you should be able to appreciate most of it.
    Love the Marvel reference. I can see the raccoon definitely being into some Hawkwind! I wanna ski on space-water too. About this track - its part of a sublime sequence on the album which starts off with Brainstorm, goes into Space is Deep, then a short piano piece, then launches into the Hendrix protopunk of Lord of Light. It ain't for the feint-hearted that's for sure. What I want to know is how they managed a violin solo when there's no violins on this record!...
    Flying is trying is dying

    Lord of Light is the name of a Sci-Fi novel by Roger Zelasny which came out about '72. If there is a direct connection, IDK, it could just be a cool title that Hawkwind borrowed.
    My only Hawkwind album was Live Chronicals, songs taken from a series of fantasy novels by Michael Moorcock, it was recorded at Stonehenge, yes The Stonehenge. I heard that bands couldn't record there anymore for fear of toppling the stones. BOC also was inspired by Moorcock, most famously Black Blade and Veteran of the Psychic Wars, which Moorcock gets writing credits on.

    I discovered Hawkwind around 1979 when I was 17 and I've seen them live twice, once in 1980 at the Lyceum in London and then again in Cambridge in 2006. Both gigs blew me away and would love to see them again. I'm a bit late to this RUclips 'Reaction' party that's going on, I didn't even know it was 'a thing' until about a week ago! Hawkwind are on my list of bands to suggest as I hadn't seen any reactions to them, that was until I came across your 'Master of the Universe' reaction quickly followed by this one. Their major members have since passed to the gig in the sky but their sons still tour as 'Son of Man'.

    Hawkwind is not just considered "Space Rock", but they are acknowledged as the originators of "Space Rock"!

      I think 'Brainstorm' from Doremi Fasol Latido is better, but both are storming space rock head bangers providing you just turn up the volume and go with the music rather than be technically analytical, but none of their stuff will stand much of that. I was a huge Hawkwind fan fron 1971 until they lost me with the Quark album and saw them live many times around the West Midlands, even chatting to the band before the show and the roadies after it. Great memories of teen years in a lost time.

      Try 'Brainstorm' from the 1972 BBC In Concert cd. The band are right on the edge of losing control but keep it together. The sound of that song as well as the opener, 'Born To Go' is like a herd of wildebeest stampeding down a oak staircase and across a parquet floor. Sheer madness.
