  • Corrupt Food Industry - How come ham is pink? Why do we believe that it is good for our children? Why are product labels beyond understanding? Industrial giants are able to stall and orientate policy decisions that directly affect public health.
    Corrupt Food Industry (2016)
    Director: Guillaume Coudray, Sandrine Rigaud
    Writers: Guillaume Coudray, Sandrine Rigaud
    Genre: Documentary
    Country: France
    Language: English
Also Known As: Cash Investigation: The Meat Lobby: Big Business Against Health?
Release Date: December 1, 2016 (France)
    Filming Location: Paris, France
    Synopsis:
In 2015, the WHO listed one of the additives in processed meats as carcinogenic. That same additive was nearly banned in America in the 1970s - until lobbying from the meat industry discredited the scientists. We reveal how, to impede or halt regulations on certain additives, lobbyists have been working in the shadows for decades.
At the heart of this strategy are the scientists who collaborate, who receive generous compensation for studies that promote meat consumption. In conjunction with this, those whose work finds health risks associated with meat are ‘shot down’.
From Brittany to Denmark, through California and Wisconsin, director Sandrine Rigaud conducted a year-long investigation on the tactics of the meat industry.
    Reviews:
"This documentary on its own provides a lot of good information related to the declining health of our society and also info about the little-known, secretive mechanisms, industry influencers and disnformation propagators of the meat industry. A must watch for those interested in health. This, along with some other great health documentaries on Prime, illuminate a disturbing picture of declining American health and provide good suggestions for a way forward and fixing it all. Five stars."

Vote to overturn Citizens United, this way we get rid of “lobbying,” another way to call bribery. There are many things we can do. Call your representatives to the Capitol switchboard, is there for us, ask them for example to clean the FDA. Subscribe to a free newsletter to an organic consumers organization to tell you what to do. Support your local organic farmers any time you can, educate yourself about nutrition from doctors who are exponent of eating whole foods.

I’ve worked in an NHS mental health hospital for several years now and it never ceases to amaze me the appalling lack of knowledge and awareness medical professionals such as doctors and nurses have when it comes to the link between nutrition and health. The dementia and neuropsychiatry wards are particularly bad where patients who have fasting bloods of 7- 8, and after eating 12-13 is seen as normal and of no concern.
I find it ironic that diabetic patients (which there are many) are not allowed to have sugar in their drinks but yet are permitted to eat as much toast, beans, potato, cereal, pasta, rice as they like. I once voiced my concerns about this with a senior nurse, who simply shrugged her shoulders whilst telling me there’s very little sugar in bread, rice or pasta so it was fine. I couldn’t believe this highly experienced nurse didn’t have a clue how carbs are processed in the body. For a second, I was tempted to inform her that these carbs are converted into glucose by the liver causing huge blood sugar and insulin spikes. I thought better of it. My words would’ve almost certainly fallen on deaf ears.
Just the other week I witnessed a nurse encouraging a diabetic patient to eat some toast before they go to bed as their bloods were too low 5.8. I couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing. After the toast her bloods shot up to 12! The nurse was happy with this and allowed her to go to bed.
Many patients are encouraged to eat three meals per day plus snacks and supper which include pudding after every meal (usually cake and custard). toast, and copious amounts of biscuits. Many patients who’s bloods are too low (5-6 range) for their insulin shots are encouraged to eat several biscuits so they can get their shot.
Patients who refuse meals as they’re simply NOT HUNGRY are regularly bullied into submission and virtually force fed. Nurses and staff go into a blind panic thinking that missing a meal or two will somehow have a detrimental effect. For those who don’t cave into the pressure it’s not long before the Ensures (full of sugar) are being pushed upon them. It’s a farce.
As a result of this appalling lack of understanding around nutrition many patients pile on the weight, and their condition deteriorates rapidly. Many patients are on a whole cocktail of drugs which seem to have very little positive effect whatsoever. In fact, I’m convinced many suffer detrimental side effects as a result.
This is an NHS hospital where patients are supposed to come to get better. It’ a sad state of affairs! What the heck is going on!?

You sound very knowledgeable about nutrition. I too believe it to be the root of many if not most western society problems, esp. chronic diseases. I'd love to hear your take on this: What's your opinion on the current food pyramid?
Do you think a low carb is the healthiest possible way of eating?
So basically keto...low carb, high fat and high protein (animal or plant based).
On youtube I see the carnivore diet trend on the rise. While I think its extreme and not convinced it's healthy at all cause too unbalanced, some people seem to see benefits (many of them diabetics). You think this can be linked to the no carbs of this diet?
No carbs might be too extreme too? For me what I'm currently doing is very low to no sugars (if then natural like honey), no plant and seed oils and I'll try low carbs.
Thanks for an answer. Find the discussion very interesting.

@@RM360CRNo, that is the wrong idea. The choice we have as the consumer is very limited. It‘s difficult to get local food, that does not have additives or pesticides, that are carcinogenic too. And if you find some, it‘s really expensive. Not all do have the money for that.
There need to be regulations for big companies, because they don‘t give a damn about anything but money.
Look at all the companies producing in low income countries to avoid labor laws in order to employ children.
The meat industry turned farming into mass production and raising animals in close proximity to each other without once being allowed to walk outside. Muscles are grown with the help of hormones since they are barely able to move. They get often sick so they get injected with antibiotics as a prevention measure, crating antibiotic resistant bacteria.
Those sick animals lan on our plate. I try not to buy those, but ones that are certified having better raising conditions. But those are expensive too.
The responsibility can‘t be on the consumer for the wrongdoings of big corporations. The responsibility lays on them. There is only so much you can do as a consumer.
Many people also calling bs on processed meat being cancer promoting, because otherwise they would not be allowed.

I decided to stop poisoning myself with processed meats and processed foods overall. It is so hard to quit because there are substances the industry uses to make these things highly addictive and it takes willpower to quit eating these "non- food edible products" as I call them. I am not influenced by commercials since I know whats in these products and I cannot be fooled by nice rustic scenes. I still occasionally eat processed foods and meat with no additives, I always read the ingredients. Finding such products is hard, I would say there is barely any and sometimes its written on the package that the product is " free of nitrite/ MSG/gluten/ lactose/ soy" and suddenly I feel inclined to buy these until I read the ingredients with all the E- numbers, artificial colorings/ flavorings and crap and quickly put it back to the shelf. These are the worst tactics. Clearly they try to sell you something claiming its healthy when it is not, knowing the trends of the " free from" diets that those people follow who want to buy healthy foods. And very often they actually manage to sell crap to unknowing health- conscious people.

You'd have to get the government itself to change it's own tactics, or convince millions of people to stop buying particular products. I don't buy any of the popular chip brains, processed candies, soda or even bleached bread. It's my own choice, but it does little to cancel out the choice of everyone else. I have discussed nitrates (purely as a private citizen) with many people (in the dozens) over the years and the prevailing opinion of most (mostly uninformed individuals) was to limit consumption and they all seemed to be of an ambivalent nature. It being difficult to elicit any passion on the subject. So, the battle of the “passionate informed” will continue to be of the nature of Sisyphus.
To get people to eat Healthy products will always be a battle against time and convenience as we all have such a large selection of many different processed foods to purchase in order to save us time in our busy lives.
Ask any teenager who hangs on the door of the refrigerator and calls out “there is nothing to eat!” To be honest I think many adults would be of the same opinion and many times opt to reach for fast and easy.
It’s usually only when one comes across a personal health issue that causes fear or concern, that we as individuals take on a personal journey of study and discover how to better our health with good nutrition choices.

Buy your meats directly from a butcher or other direct farm source. They will be free of nitrates and other preservatives but the downside is you'll have to consume them in a short period. Another option is to deep freeze them for long term storage.

All done purposely to keep people slaves to their never-ending jobs.... Why give a person a twenty hour work week when you can make them work sixty hours and offer them Fast Food and easy junk food to consume because of time constraints.... Eventually, all this "working" and unhealthy living leads to medical issues.... But luckily for us, we have the other corrupt industry known as the Pharmaceutical Industry to save us....

It would make the documentary more interesting if we can know what the lobbyists are being paid by the food industry. Is there any way of finding that out? It should be a requirement by the federal government to publicize what a lobbyist is being paid by a public company to lobby for them at a federal or state level.

In Vietnam, people prefer fresh meat to processed one. Everyone knows the later has numerous additives, preservants etc. that make it look fresh and taste good for a long time. Besides, fresh meat tastes a hundred times better. Foreigners coming to our country see dozens of local market vendors selling meat (pork, beef) outside. They say that is not hygienic but in fact they are freshly cut out of butchery. I 😅

Thank you for this eye opening documentary. It is rare to see real journalism these days. I am trying to follow a keto/carnivore diet, mostly meat, eggs, dairy. Time to time I buy sausages, hams as snack, but not anymore. It was a good reminder to read the label. I will just go for good quality, fresh meat products, preferably from local market. One remark on the reason why they use this poison in meat products: they claim it's because if it was grey people wouldn't buy it. I think it is a lie from their part: they are simply "creating" patients for big pharma. So they make people ill and they pass them to big pharma as clients.

I would love to see you do a documentary on inventors and inventions that have been squashed because a particular industry would lose either lots of money or lose their business altogether because of such an invention. For example, years ago I saw a news media show about up-and-coming inventions and one of them was a sonic like washing machine. The whole idea behind the concept is not having to use any type of laundry detergent at all. It was the same type of method used to clean dental instruments. And the guy had all but perfected it and then I never saw it again. And then I found an unrelated Article about a different invention and apparently a huge company came and offered the guy tons of money for his invention just so they could squash it. I would love to find out what happened to that man and his sonic washing machine
