a major factor in the british, soviet, usa and a lot more, wars against the afgans is the terrain, no one was equipped for it, barely if at all trained for it, but the people of afgan were obviously well acustomed to it and know the roots and ways to win engagements when the odds were against them, weather and terrain is one of the biggest factors in battles and its not mentioned much :(

The soviet forces in this battle were essentially a garrison with some ability to conduct counter-insurgency strikes. The terrain in this part of Afghanistan is very mountainous and makes it very difficult to bring in, supply, and actually conduct operations. America had an advantage due technological advancement and to be blunt, better logistical capacity.

There's a reason Germany never tried to invade Switzerland.

Haven't been around for a while my dear friend. I see that this history awoke some questions in you about Russia/Afghanistan/USA.
We usually don't discuss politics, mostly because we like discussing music more 😁.
That being said, there is a man by the name Volker Pisper that have made a brutal satire called history of the USA. I think it's in five parts, I think it can be interesting for you to watch private.

For me, looking at Afghanistan, it is that all those foreign militaries that has been there, none has actually helped the country to build up their own defences against the talibans. So when they left, the talibans took over the country every singel time. For me that just a waist of peoples life and material.

Well tbf. With the soviet puppet government that may be true. But in the last 20 years the USA and other NATO countries tried to hard to train up and equipp Afghani soldiers. But sadly it seems they have lacked a good government and most units surrendered basically instantly. Only a few units I recall fought on for a while after the retreat the war was a loss of life and material really for a country that wasn't willing to change their ways of life
