Wow! That guest was so refreshing to listen. And I'm far from a climate skeptic. I'm a meteorologist... But the way to fight climate change won't come through the destruction of our standard of life. We need to export our natural gas and reduce coal usage around the world, and we need to invest in carbon capture technologies. Some technologies are very promising and allow to convert CO2 into fuels or objects. Now on the fires, your guest is 100% right that we have a forest management problem out west. However, it doesn't mean climate change doesn't have an impact. It makes heat waves and droughts worse, so climate change makes forest management even more important nowadays.

  • @RandomOliphant

My father was a forester in BC and Alberta from the early 80's and all of the points that the guest made have been voiced by him. The Federal forest service has been 20-30 years conservative in practice since its inception.

The Algerian boxer is not biologically male.
She was born female, and is still currently female.
She has a birth defect that reduces her chromosome from XX to XY, making her produce testosterone higher than other females.
I also don't think that men should switch gender to excel in female sports, but spreading misinformation is going to hurt this stance more than it helps it.
If you are really against it, you should just say that females with birth defects that help them in sports shouldn't be allowed.

Why are Canadians paying SOOO much for 'cleaning up Canada' when China and India are doing 10x our effort to make the world worse?

We hand out more than we take in so far in subsidies and credits. We can all have our opinions in private but Canada is not America. We need to at the very least pretend because we survive off of fossil fuel exports, some very carbon intensive. A fake carbon tax is the best scam available. It's like the scrapie in Alberta cattle, shoot, shovel and shut up.
China plays the game well. They installed more solar just last year than all other countries combined. They also installed more electric car charging stations then exist in the entire rest of the world. It's a game. Learn to play.

I consider myself fairly left-leaning, but our government's energy policy makes no sense at all. Oil and natural gas pipelines make transporting those products safer and more efficient than transport by train. Stopping those project just ensures a less competitive industry with more possibilities for transport failure. Additionally, efficiently extracting energy here in Canada reduces the need for coal, heavy fuel oil and other much more greenhouse-effect causing alternatives and it's bad for Canada's political enemies, many of whom are energy-producers.
We need to make sure Canada is moving forward with nuclear, gas and oil as well as solar and wind. Renewables get cheaper year by year but we're not there yet and the alternatives are things like coal, which is both worse for the environment and inefficient cost-wise. I don't think any of our politicians is even remotely competent when it comes to the topic of energy policy.
Wow, big comment. I must be really annoyed by this.

A lot of the stuff David is saying about emissions is disingenuous at best.
The emissions have increased under the Liberal government, but that increase is concentrated . Every other province has dropped their emissions per capita, and often by huge amounts. Both Alberta and Sask which have been fighting the feds on any climate measures.
How can you advise a failed premier who was in the pocket of the oil industry, and gripe that their opponents in the Federal gov't didn't do enough to stop Kenney's agenda? Hypocrite much?
Basically all of Canada's emissions growth going back decades is oil sands emissions. Everything else is falling and has fallen considerably. Alberta and Saskatchewan's energy exports dwarf basically every province's CO2 emissions are immense.
His anti-renewable arguements are also crap. The amount of area needed solar panels in most countries are genererally less than the existing built roof areas, not even counting open, desert lands. In almost every country other than Canada (or Northern Europe) this is a winning strategy. If we captures a fraction of a percent of the solar energy hitting the planet with solar panels, we'd have an abundance of electricity considerably beyond what we need. If we replaced all electricity production with solar, we'd need to cover something like 0.01% of the earths surface with panels.
Offshore wind also has a ridiculously huge energy potential. Nuclear also has immense potential. There are so many options that are long term solutions, not just short term stopgaps like LNG and oil exports.

David Legg seems to be going for political points on the Jasper wildfire. Although I’m not sure what steps were taken in Jasper, in and around Banff parks has taken active steps to mitigate forest fire risk. There is a large firebreak/ clear-cut west of Lake Louise, another (seasonal controlled burns and clear cutting) west of Banff townsite, and another east of Banff townsite just outside of the National Park. Cuts are reenforced with controlled burns east of Town. Although I don’t know what was done in the Jasper area his opinions on Banff mitigation (likely still inadequate) appears poorly informed.

Not loving the way this guest frames his arguments. He uses his presupposition that ‘capitalism good, socialism bad’ as a way to characterize everything he disagrees with. It’s easy to win arguments when you use this lens.
I was hoping for more substance beyond calling everyone he disagrees with a bell bottom wearing hippy.

Guys. Love your podcast, but this guy David Legg... he is speaking WAY out of his knowledge base with wildfire management. I have 9 years experience as a wildfire fighter and now work as an RPF (professional forester). As a forest and wildfire professional, suggesting that they should have simply removed the "deadwood" in the perimeter of Jasper as a wildfire management strategy and that would have made any signficant difference.. that is comical. Sorry but this guy destroyed his credibility. Can't trust anything else he said after his wildfire management piece

@@saretsky it's a nuanced answer, a holistic fire response and risk reduction plan. In super brief terms you want to Firesmart all your structures and properties, have a pre-established tactical response plan in place with maintained fuel break and potential burnoff points, in combination with strategic wildfire risk reduction forest management activities in surrounding areas. So removing "deadwood" would be part of the approach, depending on current forest conditions... but the point here is it's something much more complicated than your guest implies. He oversimplifies everything. In my particular area of expertise it's just easy to tell he is talking out of his ass. Final note once a fire gets going (e.g. rank 4, rank 5) there isn't anything you can do to stop it. David seems to make it seem like you could have prevented a fire from impacting jasper with a few simple interventions

Question: If climate change is so important, would not a HIGH interest rate be helpful ?
Interest rate low ==> people spend and borrow money to buy buy buy (==> high inflation) Bad for the environment
Interest rate high ==> people save money and not spend it on THINGS/STUFF helps the ENVIRONMENT( ==> low inflation)
So, if they "really cared" about climate change, increase the interest rate, so people would save unless they really want something.
Low rate just encourages spending, and some are very wasteful.
Another Point: The Malls are FULL OF JUNK, the merchandise is so bad. Housing inventory is also bad... Let's get back to quality instead of quantity. That is better for the environment.

With America’s need for natural gas increasing exponentially due to data centers and AI, I really pray that America buys out Alberta. Since Canadian govt anyway does not care about Canada’s O&G industry, it will be in interest of both Canada and the US that Alberta joins America as 51st state.

There's a clear lack of understanding of the science. "Our energy resource can be used to remove far more than our total carbon footprint". That is not true. You're not storing 450kg of co2 per barrel of oil produced. Even the scenario of displacing coal with natural gas would only have a meager effect since natural gas is still producing almost as much co2 as coal. You'd also need to account for the energy wasted in getting the methane to oversea market. Those liquifying plants take a ton of energy to run. This is being pushed by oil producers because methane is otherwise a wasted product for them and they would love to get an additional revenue stream, world be damned.

Olivia Chow has been in office 1 year? He blames her for floods?
Then blames the feds for Alberta fires? No mention on the provincial government.
If parks Canada played such a big roll in the reason for the fires and the provincial government knew. Why didn't they spend half the time and money that was put towards the anti carbon tax message.
I'm not debating the carbon tax.... I'm just bringing up how biased he is in this interview. Sounds like he's ready to run for office.

I live in Ontario so I'm only going on what info makes it over here.
The Albert government seemingly goes to war with the feds on everything. They try to have as little fed say and decision making in their province as possible. ( For better or worse, that's for the people of Albert to decide.)
With the reputation that Alberta has in all this fighting with the fed, it's hard to believe that they would have stopped with a strongly worded letter to Parks Canada
If the Kenny and Smith governments knew and believed that the danger level was this high. Why did they not make this a bigger issue?
They go to the courts for carbon tax, health care spending, and probably more. Then they send a letter about Forrest management and that's it?
