There is not just one reason, there could be several reasons. Male usually fight with other males and females with other females. I use to have female cat that fought with this other female cat... and one time she was climbing the side of the building and the other female cat jump and pulled her down, she hit her stomach hard on a dog house, and she was pregnant and when her kittens were born 2 were dead, and one was so small - it didn't live. You should never let pets fight.
