My mom was part of the syndicate that bred Lost Code. I think they sold him as a yearling for $7,000 at OBS. Yup. 25 years later it's still hard to think about it.
Before his 4-race winning streak to end his career, Alysheba raced mostly on even terms with Bet Twice, Lost Code, Cryptoclearance, and others... and not always as the favorite, believe it or not! Quite a rivalry back in the day.
I loved it when the Spec was the week PRIOR to Preakness. So easy to go see great horses without the (largely disinterested) huge crowds. Went to the last one such in 2001.
Retired jockey Craig Perret (born February 2, 1951) last April was voted to be inducted to The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Perret, 68, was North America's leading apprentice jockey by earnings in 1967 (prior to the Eclipse Awards) and won the 1990 Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey and in 1998 he received the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. A native of New Orleans, Perret won 4,415 races in a career that spanned from 1967 to 2005. He won the Belmont Stakes in 1987 with Bet Twice, denying Alysheba the Triple Crown. Three years later, Perret won the Kentucky Derby with Unbridled. He won four Breeders' Cup races, including two editions of the Sprint (G1), as well as two runnings of both the Travers Stakes (G1) and Queen's Plate, among others. In 1994, Craig Perret was inducted into the Fair Grounds Racing Hall of Fame and in 2006 into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m., next August 2 at the Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion. The event is open to the public and free to attend. Legendary racecaller Tom Durkin will serve as master of ceremonies. Congratulations Mister Perret! Best Regards from Venezuela.
Lost Code ran one of the biggest races that I have ever seen. He put away Little Bold John, then he put away Alysheba, and he almost held off Bet Twice who had a great trip.
Lost Code set a pretty good pace; I give him credit for hanging tough and battling Bet Twice to the end. Agree about that '87 crop of 3YOs - it was a good one!
Bet Twice beat Alysheba 4 times in their careers, they had a great rivalry, and it was an actual rivalry in them facing each other many, many times, not just one time after the triple crown races.
If any 1 of these horses were under rated it would be Lost Code. I don't think he ever ran a bad race. Difference in this race was Craig Perret knowing LCs tendency to go wide on the turn and shoot the rail with Bet Twice. Not to take away anything from either horse but Perret was almost as much a part of winning this race as BT was running it.
Honestly, I never thought Bet Twice was all that. I always thought he was a bit overrated. Alysheba's going on to win 4 straight (won a couple prior including the Strub and the Santa Anita) after proved to me that he was "THE MAN," as they say.
Terri Bey I was around Bet Twice his whole career and there wasn't anyone in our barn who thought he was better than Alysheba.....But on his day he was tough laternin his 4;yr old year he had had enough.
I always thought McCarron rode a bad race by keeping Alysheba too close to a fast pace. Definitely a great race though! The 1987 crop of 3YO's remains my favorite....it definitely produced some great races.
Alysheba was in a class way above these other average horses. Alysheba was a Triple Crown winning caliber horse, his crutch was McCarron. Alysheba could gallop faster than these other horses could run all out. He always carried more weight than his competition. I saw Crypto, Lost Code and others in the 88' Arkansas derby, was a cold damp day. Bet Twice shouldn't even be mentioned in the same convo as Alysheba. McCarron beat Alysheba in the 87' Belmont, not Bet Twice. Just ask Jack VanBerg
Back when the Pimlico Special was a meaningful race . . . .

I loved Bet Twice. Loved the spoiler of the horse who was becoming the darling.
Me too, exact same

Joe Federico How many times did Day ride Lost Code?
This race made me sick to my stomach when Alysheba didn't fire. But remember he never lost again. True classic champion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Loved that horse!
Thank you for acknowledging that very fact! :)

@@TheJustjim3333 Wow. Interesting. Oh, Congrats on his jockey, Craig Perret, FINALLY getting into the Hall of Fame.
Winner had the perfect trip!

True. Even the greats throw a clunker in once and a while. After this race, he always kept Alysheba 6 plus back and made a big run.
Alysheba lost? Frown
Never ever liked Bet Twice. Beat three of my favorites. Alysheba, Lost Code and Cryptoclearance. Laugh at Crypto, but, he always cashed a nice check.
Little Bold John was much the best horse in this race. His great jockey Donnie Miller Jr should be in the hall of fame.
JoJoGunn probably the greatest horse of all time and would have won the Indy 500 if he was in it
