The game that did it again (and was revolutionary as well) was L.A. Noire (projecting captured frames on moving geometry). We're still far far away from having realistic looking human beings in games... Static screens could look good enough, but whenever it comes to animation everything falls into uncanny valley...
Do you even comprehend what the word "revolutionary" means? Something that moves something in a direction it hasn't moved before. Something that upturns it, makes it do a 180... a revolution.
Yeah we didn't have internet in those days just strategy guides and gaming magazines like Electronic Gaming Monthly and GamePro to get all the inside scoops
Indeed, Atari's Pit-Fighter came out 2 years before Mortal Kombat and looked very similar. It was so early though that it even came out before Street Fighter II, which created the winning formula for the fighting game market (partly accidentally: combos were an unintended glitch). Mortal Kombat mostly just married Pit-Fighter graphics with Street Fighter II gameplay. Its bigger accomplishment was the aura it created around itself with its aesthetics, fatalities and secret codes. That may never be duplicated again, given how hard it is to create shock value now and keep secret codes secret for long.

I always wished that they had the technology to allow the actual gamers to motion capture themselves and be put in the game. Even if it's through frame by frame photos. This is the game that caused me to obsessively want this as a kid. And I STILL want it. I always thought Sonya's exercise outfit was incredibly odd.
i remember my 13 year old self was completely amazed by this game.. it was really one of the most violent games out at the time and me and my friends were at that age where we absolutely adored it. i remember that the game was in all the arcades in town (which honestly i lived in a small-ish town so there weren't too many arcades), but there were always HUGE lines to play it (and fights would even break out over it occasionally). but my brother and i found a couple of random places like grocery stores that had the arcade game; like near the claw machines that were everywhere in the 90s.. and we would drive across town to these random grocery stores just so we could play mortal kombat and not have to deal with a crowd. but the game was still so massively popular that other people would do the same thing hah. so there would always be like 3 or 5 people hanging out at the mortal kombat game in some random ingles. god i'm old
My childhood! I'll never forget leaving school and being handed a flyer about Mortal Kombat 1 coming out! Right on my birthday too! SEPT 13. back in 1992. I was in 2nd grade....SUCH AN EPIC FUCKING TIME ! THE TECHNO MUSIC was the icing on the cake. The game blew everyone's minds away.
Probably with a script, this is somewhere at the end of the development, those are the finished graphics, they probably used beta/test sprites.... Sorry, i'll see my self out off here... ._.
Awesome - been waiting years to see this kind of stuff. Mortal Kombat is my fave fighting game of all time and MK Trilogy on the original Playstation is my favourite.
I wish they made another game using this format. No 3D animation, just high quality images. I'm sure we can achive realism with the technology of today.
Granted you are comparing early 3D engines to digitized frames from video. Compared to something like MKX the comparison is much more favorable for the CG characters. With that said, for as rough as MK4 may have been you suddenly had dynamic camera moves and 3D movement which was not possible with the digitized characters. Or you ended with a game like War Gods which used blend of both techniques.
man i used to play the hell out of this game on genesis when I was a kid...I remember the damn blood code to this day and i'm 30 now....wtf haha ABACABB YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!!!!

Sonya Blade is The Best. She is my favorite character of all time in Mortal Kombat. I Love her. I always had a crush on her ever since I was a kid. MK1 Sonya is my favorite form of her. Liz Malecki is my favorite Sonya Blade actress.
Mortal Kombat certainly was a game changer. today this stuff is common place, but back then we didn't know computer was being used this way. these are some of the earliest projects like this.
Nice, taking a video of an actual person and their punches, like, and stunts, no wonder mortal combat looked so realistic. Better than street fighter. Great idea.
Haha I used to have this sound track at the age of 14. Man the memories of being a young nerdy teenager in the early 90's. Funny how I used to jam out to this with my best friend.
Fuckin awesome video. This game changed my life. When I discovered this in 4th grade I was forever changed. I was obsessed with this game, constantly thought about it all the time and obsessed with it at school.
Because he did something really stupid posing for a cheap shitty knock off game claiming Johnny Cage plays Bloodstorm "The fighting game for real fighters"

I wonder where all the original costumes are. Can you imagine what they would be worth to a collector?!
The original costumes probably belong to Ed Boon or to the actors they played as either way it would be cool to see them again today!
Billions
i have the real sub zero costume that was used in the video game
ALmac AMC awsome
BuzzKill I think that some of them are at NetherRealm studios.
This was actually way ahead of it's time. Gotta be one of the first instances of using real people for motion capture.
Ifoldthenuts pit fighter did it first, but mortal kombat did it better
Yeah, so much effort went into it!

The actors were part of something original and groundbreaking!

Yes, but actually the technique gives great results, like how Mortal Kombat 3 looked better than Mortal Kombat 4.
Granted you are comparing early 3D engines to digitized frames from video. Compared to something like MKX the comparison is much more favorable for the CG characters.
