He could have let it go, Artie was an idiot but still under Tony’s protection. Chris was a made man that week and felt the need to show off his status. I was actually surprised Tony didn’t heavily punish Benny for the Amex scam, Artie was his friend
Artie is a great depiction of a person who is never content with his life. Artie is a good decent hardworking man. Adriana would have been much better off with him than that joke Christopher who lead her through nothing but pain, false promises, heartbreak and ultimately death.
We are all men here. Adriana is one of those beautiful women that love bad guys, alpha bad guys. Those women will break your heart into a thousand pieces if you can’t activate that trigger in them that craves the adrenaline rush of being with a badass. Artie never stood a chance, it doesn’t matter if he looked like Brad Pitt. Men have a difficult time understanding this simple concept
When you look at this show. Tony and Artie were the only true friends. Look at the respect Tony gives to Artie he never showed his hand to anyone but him. True high school friends. He told Christopher to get out but kisses Artie go figure.
Artie Was a massive idiot. He just couldn't resist antagonizing mobsters.Yes he receives protection from Tony but that only lasts for as long as Tony lives and considering His line of work it's probably wise to consider that he could die tomorrow and Chris Would happily take the opportunity to get back on Artie.
+Matt M God, yes. He's so goddamn perfect and invested in every word, every movement. Call me sappy, but I still find it hard to watch him. We lost so much when he died.
In almost every single scene where these two had any sort of interaction, James was always crazy good at displaying the genuine affection and concern Tony had for Artie Bucco. One of the only few redeemable qualities of that awful ( in terms of humanity ) character.
The more i see James Gandolfini as the character Tony Soprano the more i say dam this guy can act. The facial expressions and cool demeanor just make him so real. I don't think any other actor could have done such a fine portrayal.
Some people really don’t know what they have at home. Artie has a wife who is loyal who keep him from being completely owned by Tony and who is beautiful. Here he is crying over some girl that just want to be with mobsters and snort coke all day. He wouldn’t last a month with Adriana, she would eat him alive. Girls like her need a guy like Christopher, that’s the only type of guy they respect.
One of the scenes that cemented Artie was one of only two people in the world Tony sincerely loved. Him and Meadow. Anyone else he would cut their head off at the first betrayal. Not Artie, Artie pulled a gun on him and Tony forgave him.
There really is something to say about childhood friendships...no matter what, Tony ALWAYS had a soft spot (even through all the shit he did to him) for Artie...more so than anybody!!!
If this were real life, especially in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, etc., Artie's fate would've been sealed the second he put his hands on Chris. And in front of the boss?
Im also in love with someone I cant have, and i know how painful it is, when she is with someone else who doesn't appreciate what he has. Its like your own personal hell being in that situation
I get you might have been 13 when you wrote this comment but the point is he had someone and they loved eachother very much, he threw it all away to pursue a mafioso life and a masochistic enabler who clearly wasnt interested in him ever
2:09 You can notice on James Gandolfini's face he almost wants to pretend sympathize being like "awe poor Artie" or something but he's too big of a joke and he continues laughing 😂 (Tony gets angry conveying to Artie that he doesn't even want him to say it again and him laughing was it being ridiculous)
I had read or saw on ‘something’ recently that Gandolfini would kind of hold back, stay to himself on the set, in the moments prior to being called upon to play a scene. Then, when called upon, would almost turn on some “mental switch” and “become Tony”; many of his best moments were a surprise to both the Directors and fellow Actors. That part of the scene where Artie wants to go apologize to Chris, and Tony states “Not now….lemme talk to him first”…..was incredibly natural, very real, ….and a credit to both of them. I have no earthly idea how you could even begin to put that part of the scene down in a written script.
Let me correct that for you: there's nothing on TV for women OR men these days. Nothing that compares, even remotely, to the best show ever to grace the small screen: The Sopranos. I agree that it's a masculine-driven show, to some degree, but that doesn't mean that women - like me - don't absolutely adore it. Just my two cents' worth.
Woulda been funny if Christopher put a coffee pot over Artie's head and said "You could have hair like my mudders muff on your head and couldn't get a girl like that."
Artie was the real mvp cuz he could do whatever and got away wit it For example the chris situation and what he did to benny not to mention nobody would let him borrow money cuz they knew they couldn't touch him and on top of that he up a rifle at tony the boss himself. If u ask me artie should've been a dead man walkin a long time ago u got to love this show tho lol
In this scene we see: 1. Artie representing the person Tony feels closest to representing that Gary Cooper persona. 2. People forgetting that Artie gets extra sway/respect from Tony because he married Charmaine, a figure who Tony regrets letting loose because she represented that idealized smart, sane, sexy, independent and dark Italian mother figure [think dr. Melfi/ gloria trillo / valentina lapaz figure] Tony is attracted to. Tony regrets letting her loose and he knows Artie is the only thing keeping her within his social circle.
Artie's complex and great character....but I always imagined what it would've been like if Chase had cast Ventimiglia as an actual mob associate or even a made guy in the crew. He had that very brooding and sincere look about him, especially when not in the chef costume. The scene where he beats the shit out of Benny showed a little bit of that side. He has the wiseguy temperament to go with it aswell. He'd probably have been just as memorable if he'd been put up there in the Bada-Bing with Silvio, Chris and Paulie. Guys like Vito, Bobby, Patsy and Hesh were just plot filler. Boring and 2-dimensional.
Superb performance, don't get me wrong. He just had that sociopathic look about him. I envisioned him as Tony's frightening right hand man. It would have been very iconic to see two bald headed, ruthless mafiosos just lay down the fucking law
Artie's one of the best characters on the show, but I don't think he could have ever really made it as a mobster...He does attempt to move closer into the mafia on a few occasions (seemingly envious of the 'glamerous' lifestyle (which in reality is the opposite) but always fails with both hilarious and tragic results - see the scene when he tries to become a loanshark and it all goes tits up :) He was too nice a guy/ordinary person to really be a criminal - when he beats up Benny, a wiseguy, he's having a breakdown after becoming sick of being 'trampled on' and used, and so goes on an angry rampage... The irony throughout the series is that he's one of the luckiest in the show - owns a successful business, happens to be a best childhood friend of a mafia boss, has a gorgeous wife, yet he's blind to it all and thinks he has a bad lot. This was what made him such a tragic yet lovable and comedic character... At heart he's an ordinary (i.e. non criminal) person though, so could never make it in the mob, plus with his sudden impulsiveness I don't think he'd survive very long...
Dav Dinneen I also think Tony has a soft-spot for him: not only due to them being old friends, but bc Tony has mental health problems and can tell Artie also suffers from them. Remember, Tony's no ordinary 'Don' - despite his (very) dark side he has a surprising amount of empathy - without this I don't think Artie would have got off so lightly...In real life few people could get away with doing all the stuff Artie did (the most extreme moment being when he directly points a loaded rifle at Tony - no real wiseguy would simply let that one go!). He just happens to have the right combination of luck (After all he's not particularly logical, and appears dangerously naïve, often being blind to everything that's happening around him. The show definitely wouldn't be the same without Artie! David Chase wrote a v. unique 'mob' story, in reality I doubt any mafia family would be able to exist with so many dysfunctional people in it - but that's what makes it so unique! A mob story that shines a light on mental illness and dysfunctional relationships...
Like I said, Artie's a great character and provides much needed comic relief. My point is that in an alternative world Chase could have cast John Ventimiglia as one of the main crew members. He would have been equally as memorable. I envision him as this real psychotic scumbag. A hybrid of Chris and Tony. The demons of the former and the cold-blooded nature of latter. As great as the show was it wasn't without it's share of cow dung. The nucleus of the recurring characters...just a complete waste of space.
Artie falls in love with every hostess.

Artie is a good decent hardworking man. Adriana would have been much better off with him than that joke Christopher who lead her through nothing but pain, false promises, heartbreak and ultimately death.
False promises? He gave her everything and more.
all she wanted was money. She let everything slide for money.
Rusty Ryan agreed, I don't think beating-up little Bennie counts either.
@@wcpportfolio Your words should be carved on iron plates 100 stories high for all men to read. Artie was like, "I'll impress her with my earring".
Tony loved Artie. Loved him probably more than he did his wife and possibly his kids (well, AJ at least)
Lol why does tony always start with a slap when he attacks someone
I wish they'd done more with Wolfgang Fuckface.
He was my favorite character.
I have chills everytime Tony says "alright.." to Chris
When you look at this show. Tony and Artie were the only true friends. Look at the respect Tony gives to Artie he never showed his hand to anyone but him. True high school friends. He told Christopher to get out but kisses Artie go figure.
You could have hair like Casey Kasem!
The Tony/Artie dynamic is so underrated
I like how he says, "I am kidding.. Huhhh..." and then Chris grabs him by the collar. 🤣🤣
Tony truly had a genuine friendship with Artie. Anyone else did that to Chrissy they’d probably end up like Beansie.
I don't think so. That wasn't enough for that. Probably rough him up a bit but not like beans. That was extreme.
Artie is lucky Tony liked him so much.
Artie's practically Tony's only real friend
"What am I, a joke?!"
"Yeah a stupid fucking bald one!"
What an experience it must've been to work with Ganolfini.
+Matt M God, yes. He's so goddamn perfect and invested in every word, every movement. Call me sappy, but I still find it hard to watch him. We lost so much when he died.
Funny as hell you can see Chrissy looking at Tony like 'what the hell' then like 'this is weird right'.
In almost every single scene where these two had any sort of interaction, James was always crazy good at displaying the genuine affection and concern Tony had for Artie Bucco. One of the only few redeemable qualities of that awful ( in terms of humanity ) character.
He slapped him for real....and improvised the kiss on the forehead. My god such acting talent that just fills every emotion in this scene.
The more i see James Gandolfini as the character Tony Soprano the more i say dam this guy can act. The facial expressions and cool demeanor just make him so real. I don't think any other actor could have done such a fine portrayal.
Nothing makes Artie happy, his wife is fucking gorgeous, and yet he wants Adriana...
The way he fluffs up Chris’s hair 😂😂
Some people really don’t know what they have at home. Artie has a wife who is loyal who keep him from being completely owned by Tony and who is beautiful. Here he is crying over some girl that just want to be with mobsters and snort coke all day. He wouldn’t last a month with Adriana, she would eat him alive. Girls like her need a guy like Christopher, that’s the only type of guy they respect.
She was a bitch. Period.
Poor Tony, trying to defuse a tense situation between two people he cares about.
One of the scenes that cemented Artie was one of only two people in the world Tony sincerely loved. Him and Meadow. Anyone else he would cut their head off at the first betrayal. Not Artie, Artie pulled a gun on him and Tony forgave him.
Artie is such a simp, falls in love with every hostess.
Legit the only friend Tony had. Tone gave him insane leeway lol
Davey was his friend, but he didn’t listen to Tony’s warnings
@@timovangalen1589 Davey ranked nowhere near Artie.
can the busboy in the beginning of the scene walk any slower?..trying to get camera time..
The way Artie messes Christopher's hair and quickly fixes it 😅
There really is something to say about childhood friendships...no matter what, Tony ALWAYS had a soft spot (even through all the shit he did to him) for Artie...more so than anybody!!!
didn't help Davey Scatino, although I guess Artie was a closer childhood friend, Davey was just a high school pal.
Artie would have died 10 times over if he didn't grow up being best friends with Tony Soprano.
Chrissy went for a grilled cheese from the radiator instead.
one of Chris's most bad ass scenes
If this were real life, especially in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, etc., Artie's fate would've been sealed the second he put his hands on Chris. And in front of the boss?
hahaha I love how Chris slams the fork down.
Yes!!! - Sounds crazy but sometimes I think that if I got in my SUV and drove
to that section of NJ I would find all those characters.
I hate when a guy tells another guy that he better be good to his girlfriend/wife, so goddamn annoying.
Artie actually cooked WITH ONE F'N HAND!
2:09 You can notice on James Gandolfini's face he almost wants to pretend sympathize being like "awe poor Artie" or something but he's too big of a joke and he continues laughing 😂
(Tony gets angry conveying to Artie that he doesn't even want him to say it again and him laughing was it being ridiculous)
"Help yourself" As if Tony ever had any intention to pay his Vesuvio tab
Artie never understood it wasnt the hair, it was the fact that he was a beta male
I would have taken Little Cosette over Adriana La Cerva
This shows how much leeway they gave Artie. Who else could talk like that and not get their teeth smacked out?
Artie is trippin. Charmaine is fine af
Still a cunt though right ?
Still can't believe James is gone..... amazing actor. This was his only true, genuine friendship.
They shoulda done more with Casey Kasem’s hair.
The scene is foreshadowing Tony's hypocrisy.
That’s why that French dude mopped the floor with him when Artie asked for the loan money back. 😂😂😂
Charm is thick...can cook....business savy...and is an all around ride or die...team charm all day every day. And btw i just farted
'u can have hair like casey kasem it won't make a difference' hahahaha...oh shit.
Artie so lucky he's in good with Tony otherwise morte..
Artie was a true Nice Guy™
In a way Artie was kinda right her being too good for Chis
He killed her dog, gets her involved in his criminal lifestyle, and finally killed.
WANNA TRY COOKING WITH 1 FUCKING EYE
Adrianna was so much like Lori Darling in Lonesome Dove, every guy that laid eyes on her was instantly maddly in love...for Life.
charlotte quillen can you blame them? Her ass was da second coming
Godamn Sopranos was a great show There is nothing on TV for men these days
***** Ohh, Wolfgang Fuckface!
I agree.
Tassie G are you kidding me? the MAJORITY of TV is for women nowadays, the target demographic. look at Hollywood
overlex specific channels for them too!!
I'm pretty sure joking with a chef that the food sucks won't deescalate the situation, Ton....
"you could have had hair like Casey Kasem" where do they come up with stuff!? Brilliant.
Twisted Laugh
The way Artie says “who let this one in here?” he sounds like Richie Aprille.
Woulda been funny if Christopher put a coffee pot over Artie's head and said "You could have hair like my mudders muff on your head and couldn't get a girl like that."
if artie had a his hair, aid would be all over him.
Artie must've been on some medication with how sensual that backrub was
This is some good acting here!
I thought you said I’m alright Spider?
The real victim is arties hair. If he still had it ..Ay, Marron! Things would of been different
Best not to get drunk and belligerant around made guys Artie..lol
Let's be honest here, Charmaine was smoking hot. Easily top 3 on the show, the other two being Adrianna and Gloria Trillo.
Interesting notion. I think he was well-cast for the chef role, but to be honest i think that character was maybe a bit too neglected by the writers
