- Piper Kerman is the author of the bestselling memoir Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison, an account of her thirteen-month incarceration for a decade-old drug offense. Kerman's story offers a rare look into the lives of women in prison-why it is we lock so many people away and what happens to them when they're there. Orange Is the New Black was recently adapted into an acclaimed Netflix Original Series of the same name. Piper works as a communications consultant for nonprofits and philanthropies, and serves on the board of the Women's Prison Association. She has appeared on NPR's Talk of the Nation, Fresh Air, Good Morning America, MSNBC, The Moth Radio Hour, and has written about prison issues for The New York Times and other publications. After TEDxMarionCorrectional she will continue her important work.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. I don't understand why there are so many negative comments. Sure, she's probably a narcissist but I think it's kind of important that this white, waspy, well educated girl is sharing her experiences in prison because most people in prison don't have the platform to speak for themselves.
Gale Wings I've known quite a few people with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, one of them being my own mother, and this woman does not strike me as one of them.
She is the voice of the untouchables...so she did something good with her life ..helping the voiceless..right?

Completely disagree. Piper is ALL ABOUT HER. She did for the "oh look what I've been through, pay attention to me." That's all that was and how it got started and someone else got the idea of making it a good story.

I am going to chester county prison tomorrow for a non violent crime i committed one night in January.. it was a poor decision i made to run from the police intoxicated, but being a first time offender who is about to graduate from college with a spotless record, i am a bit amazed that i wasn't cut a LITTLE teeny bit of slack,, by no means do i think i should have been let off the hook, but prison time?? my lawyer said that in my area, there is no discretion. even though i would most likely never commit a crime again, they would rather send me to jail, and when i get out, stick me with years of probation (so i might screw my self over and get sent back) as well as a record i will never be able to expunge so i will never be able to get a job..i made a huge mistake, but the criminal justice system ruins lives!!

wow ten months since i posted this, still can not drive (i live in the sticks), tried to change states for a job but was not allowed, forced to stay in PA..
I watched this video originally because i was afraid of jail and wanted to understand what i should expect,but she was absolutely correct. 80 % shouldn't be there (the other 20% were some sick fucks in my opinion)
The last five minutes of this video are so true, she said it perfect, ps i like the show orange is the new black..

they have to think about their past and about forgiveness for others AND themselfes.. they need a good environment for that chance..

This parallels life in general. Life is a prison. I'm learning valuable survival skills from this woman. I grew up privileged princess, but lacked the skills to maneuver this life and all of its adversity. My parents did not prepare me or socialize me, so I missed alot. My natural curiosity lead me deep down the rabbit holes and at 39 alone in the big city. This is a common story line, and piper is blessed with education communication and class status..to be able to share a story that thousands can relate to..shes a VOICE FOR MANY..greatful for her speaking out.
I haven't read the book, but I wish she would tell us how much of the shows first season is true.
Just read the book.
They added a lot of sex, drama, and comedy for entertainment purposes but the overall tone and message is very much the same.

I’ve always thought putting nonviolent offenders in with violent offenders is insane and incredibly non constructive. Time and time again I hear of non violent first offenders going to prison, and we think we are constructively punishing or using that method as a deterrent to prevent people from becoming habitual offenders when it just shows that it doesn’t work.
I certainly don’t know the answer to the problem but our current system isn’t working.
She is Amazing! Question... At the end of her Ted talk she had mentioned that if anyone has stories like hers, that she would encourage them to share them... where / how can I share such a story ? Also how would I know it was being sent to her? I read the description link looking for the answers but perhaps I overlooked some thing?! Does anyone know the answer by any chance? I have some stories to share that can help people 😎🙏❤️
I am so glad that at least USA you have right to speak out what's not look right for you. If piper was born in my country, she would not live a peaceful life after speech of truth. so many blamed victim behind bars.

Prisons in the Netherlands are closing, less convicts, even though same crimes get longer sentences than before. Soft-drugs are freely available here. Actually people smoke (and drink) less, maybe due to an awareness effort (that it is bad for the brain).
Ironically, the government is tough in its "war against drugs," yet most states promote gambling, which is the most tenacious & destructive of addictions.
Does she stay in contact or keep in touch with her prison friends when they get out or is it a one sided kind of thing?

I suspect I am either missing something or misunderstanding. I always understood that sentences 2yrs less a day were served in county or municipal jails. 2yrs plus a day or more were served in prisons.
With her relatively short term & time served, I would presume she would have been remanded to a municipal or county jail not a prison. Was her drug related smuggling crime considered a federal offense? Is that why she was in an actual prison or is she exaggerating her stay in a local jail?
With all that said, I did enjoy her story as told by the very entertaining, well written, directed & acted program: "Orange Is The New Black". Although thoroughly embellished, fictionalized & dramatized for television, it was an excellent show. I trust the producers will be back with a second season soon.
I believe when it's international drug snuggling, it does count as a federal offense.
Minda Kramer Thanks for the reply. I suspect you are correct. After posting my original comment I thought about it some more. Indeed, with the "war on drugs" the USA is "fighting", I have no doubt that it is considered a federal offense & punished as such.
All said & done, it makes for great television. A very well done show, it looks like the second season is coming soon.
Federal sentences are served in federal prisons. The terrible shame is that sentences less than a year don't qualify for drug treatment and the revolving door really spins on that one.
I have been to DOC several times for nonviolent crimes due to addiction. She could not be more correct by stating that prison is where our, “justice system,”puts those they see as inconvenient or do not want to deal with. I was never offer any kind real help for the issues that got put away. The only thing prison & jail ever thought me was how to be a better criminal.
i agree. nonviolent drug offenders who are on the addicted side of things do NOT deserve jail time, but time in forced rehab,.... once they get 1-3 chances on tickets, etc. during which they can get rehab... by chance 4, i say they get FORCED rehab. cuz jail isn't where drug addicted people belong. they need HELP. :( it's sad

it really seems like this is a low hanging fruit problem. We lock too many people up, for too long, it costs too much...how is this still an issue?
Also, how can mississippi justify its incentive programs to sheriffs to fill up the jails?

Prison industrial complex, law enforcement agencies trying to justify their own budgets, fear-mongering and distraction-focused mainstream media, and voters that don't know or don't care about problem that isn't in their face.

But that is far from assured for people who've had to take pleas in America. The innocent in prison are the minority but they're a growing one, especially for women.

three10media Fiction. The 1932 version was fiction but found inspiration from Capone. Capone was not a low level mule. This woman is a nobody and doesn't deserve to have a platform for the less than a year she spent in a minimum security federal prison. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see MAJOR revisions of drug laws, but that doesn't change the fact that this woman is simply not worthy of the admiration she gets.
There is a man/woman pair that goes around the country talking. She was raped and he was put on death row because of it. After spending decades on death row for this rape he didn't commit, he was exonerated and she apologized to him and now they talk about how horrible the prisons are. Have you ever heard of this pair? If ANYONE deserves the attention and soapbox it's him. An even worse case is that of Brian Banks who was falsely accused of rape. The woman (and her mother) who falsely accused him then sued the school she was in for over a million dollars, blew it all and is facing ZERO repercussions. He spent 8 years in prison for a crime she admits never happened (they never even had sex) and she doesn't even have to pay the money back, let alone go to prison. He was on his way to college (with a full athletic scholarship) when this little bitch ruined his life. Chances are pretty good you've never heard of HIM either. She is EXACTLY like she was portrayed in the show, a fucking little narcissist that society is stupid enough to listen to.
You're missing the point. Piper Kerman isn't glorified, "Piper Chapman" is; people tend to confuse the two people. Without Orange is the New Black show Piper would be a nobody.

Yet, if ours is such a corrupt system, why do we urge more black and brown people to immigrate to our utopia to improve their lives and "live the dream?" Minorities have more opportunity in America than any other country. I wonder why we don't see more Asians, Hindis and other minorities in greater numbers behind bars? Instead of blaming a system or race for not being successful at legitimate endeavors, maybe they should learn and work for a living. As you know, they will not get rich from slinging!

Poor you. Prisons are mean to punish people , but today it is more like a vacation. In the past people were glad, if they got some food thrown at them, today, they have a clean bed, food, showers, internet, In Sweden, they even have an allowance and PS3.
The federal prison model has been changed to a punitive one, true, but it wasn't always that way. In fact, the punitive instead of a rehabilitative model has been a disaster as far as recidivism rates work. If one values freedom and being able to maintain one's family, being imprisoned is punishment enough -- you don't have to be inhumane on top of it. It's unconstitutional, for one thing, and, bottom line is, it just doesn't work. I'd prefer my tax dollars were better spent.
Prisoners are human beings. You can't starve American citizens. We don't even do that to prisoners of war.

Why not challenge yourself and actually visit a prison and see what it's like? - You could do that you know: let go of your pre-conceptions and be brave and actually visit, then you could speak and write here with some authority...
You know? This TEDx Talk is so melba-toast bland as to be misleading. There is nothing new in what she says - nothing! - and for those who have spent time in "low" security (versus "camp"), medium, high, close custody, a United States Penitentiary, in a segregated housing unit ("the hole"), Piper Kerman's talk is offensive in terms of what is not addressed. The one (1) thing I like about her TEDx talk is she mentions mental illness more than once. Otherwise, her talk is, sadly, bland, almost pathetic.
