The collapse of the condo building is tragic. However.... The owners of the Champlain Tower condo that collapsed refused to pay to repair the building. Let's not forget this point.
The owners would have been willing to ante up had not the inept, idiot Surfside building inspector declared the building safe and good at the 2018 owners meeting at which the consulting engineering firm, Morabito Engineering, presented a damning report outlining the structural deficiencies of the building. It also would have helped if Morabito had stated their findings in language a non-engineer could understand. However, as a member of my condo's Board myself, I can tell you that some people, some Board members, are so frantically into denial and so frightened by the thought of levying a special assessment, that many will gainsay a peer-reviewed engineer's report. I know, I've had to deal with a greatly needed capital improvement and the denial of Board members. Still, if the Surfside building inspector had had the integrity and intelligence to say in blunt terms what that report said, which was that the tower was critically deficient and structurally unstable, the owners would have voted for the assessment.

In case its not obvious, the problem with the golden gate beings HAS to be fixed; its not optional. Because their potential fix for wind loading CAUSED a new kind of loading. And constant actual vibrations like that are more serious that potential loading.
The Golden Gate bridge took 4 years to build It cost $35 million or in today's inflation about $500 million. It took them over 6 years to build the suicide nets on the side of the Golden Gate bridge. Why was the 2018 engineering report for Champlain Towers ignored! Were the people occupying the apartments ever told? I bet they were not. Someone is responsible for their deaths!
The residents paid for the inspections but balked at the 6 figure special assessments required per unit to make repairs, and refused to do so. The other 2 Champlain Towers, also have similar issues, stand 100 yards away, still uninspected and occupied.
It was ignored because, at the very same owner's meeting it was presented by Marabito Engineering, the idiot, incompetent Surfside building inspector stood before the owners and declared the building safe and good. Now, how on Earth are you going to get those owners to vote to approve a $9 Million (later grown to $15 Million) assessment for repairs after that? It didn't help that Marabito did not state their disastrous findings in language that non-engineers could understand. The whole debacle points to the need for stronger regulations. Laws should mandate that: 1. Consulting engineers & contractors must state their findings in language a non-engineer can understand; 2. If the structure is found deficient, they must report that fact to the city's building authorities;, 3. if the city's building dept receives a report of a structurally unsafe building, it is required, depending on how dangerous the deficiencies found, either mandate a timeline for repairs, and if the building is as far gone as Champlain South was, order the building condemned and vacated.

The noise is coming from the wind blowing against the cables/wires creating music like the vibrations caused by the strumming of a harp. There is even the appearance of monstrous harps in the design. Annoying to some, beautiful to others.
I wonder if the bridge isn't putting out infrasound as well? OTOH, they could add controllable slats to the guardrail that would open and close and play musical notes 😊
Let me take a different view of the Miami building collapse. It's terrible that 98 people died, but thousands of elderly people's lives in Florida are being ruined by the huge condo assessment fees resulting from new laws requiring building repairs, which are forcing them out of the homes. These laws are a complete over reaction and will cause infinitely more harm, especially considering that such collapses so rarely occur.

Working the Valley Fire I saw the remains of a woman who refused to evacuate being carried out in a small plastic bag because that's all that was left of her. And just yesterday with Hurricane Helene some people told to evacuate didn't. And one area had 300 calls to 911 in 15 minutes from people who didn't evacuate and were suddenly confronted with the massive storm surge and needed to be saved because the water was rising rapidly. People thought that just because the storm surge never got that high before that it wouldn't this time, even though in 2023 there was a record storm surge. People need to realize they can not win against Mother Nature, and Mother Nature is not and will not be limited by the lack of imagination or belief of humans of what they think is possible from the power of nature.
