  • PUTIN'S WAR: "The Russians have achieved a breakthrough!" Now Ukraine has a new problem
A Ukrainian army unit has withdrawn from a district of the strategically important city of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region in the face of heavy Russian attacks. A spokesman for the affected ground troops formation "Khortytsia", Nasar Voloshin, told the AP news agency on Thursday. According to the spokesman, the soldiers were forced to abandon a district in the northeast of Chasiv Yar. The Ukrainians' defensive positions on the ground were destroyed. If the troops had stayed in the area, they could have suffered potentially heavy losses, the spokesman added. The Russian army did not leave a single building intact.
Chasiv Yar lies a few kilometers west of the town of Bakhmut, which Russian attack troops captured last year after ten months of bitter skirmishes. For months, the Russian army has been trying to capture Chasiv Yar as well. The town is of great strategic importance: its fall would endanger nearby towns, affect important Ukrainian supply routes and bring Russia closer to its declared goal of annexing the entire Donetsk region.
Months of Russian artillery bombardment have devastated Chasiv Yar, with houses and offices burned down. The town, which once had around 12,000 inhabitants, is now deserted.
Oleh Shyriaev, commander of the 255th assault battalion stationed in the area for six months, said that after Russian troops took the area, they burned down every building that had not already been destroyed by shelling. With this scorched earth tactic, Russia is trying to destroy anything that could be used as a military position in order to force Ukrainian troops to retreat.
"I regret that we are gradually losing territory," Shyriaev said by telephone from the Chasiv Yar area. But "we cannot hold on to what is ruined." The Russian troops outnumber the Ukrainians by ten men to one. But at the same time they have not made any significant progress in the past six months of active fighting.
Nevertheless, the intensity of Russian attacks on the Ukrainian defense lines in the area around Chasiv Yar has increased in the past month, said Voloshin, spokesman for the Khortytsia formation. In the past week alone, Russian troops carried out almost 1,300 attacks, dropped almost 130 glide bombs and launched 44 ground attacks.
Other Russian operations in recent weeks have reportedly been aimed at capturing nearby settlements, which would enable an advance on Kramatorsk and Sloviansk - the largest cities in the Ukrainian-controlled part of the Donetsk region.
Ukrainian commanders in the area complain that supplies for their armed forces are still thin, which is mainly due to the months-long gap in military aid from the USA. This has forced the Ukrainian army onto the defensive. Shyriaev explained that ammunition from allies is now arriving, but much more slowly than the Ukrainian army would have liked. Nevertheless, they are determined to hold out to the end.
