Been making tentative steps back into 40k…been about 20 years…your videos have sealed the deal. Fab content, so happy. Thank you.
Welcome back bro , what army are you considering collecting?
What was the edition back 20 years ago?
Welcome back! I haven't heard of 40k back then, but that's cool.
@@jonbaxter2254 ummm I guess maybe 5th or around that
@@JoshuaKevinPerry it goes all the way back to 1985
This "Horus Heresy" sounds interesting, sounds like a good topic for a series of videos of increasing length that I can fall asleep to
Incidentally it also sounds like the kind of thing that would begin during something called "The Unification Wars of Terra"
FALL ASLEEP!!! What are you suggesting? 🤣
@@ArbitorIan ❤
Yeh the first 4 books will blow your mind !
Fall asleep? That sounds like heresy...
Gulliman "so now that I'm back, how fucked is everything?"
Imperium "Yes"
I had quite the cackle at this.
Guilliman's head on Alan Parrish: "WHAT YEAR IS IT?"
Space Marine head on drunk Deanna Troi: "This is no time to be arguing about time!.. we don't. have. the time!"
HOW did I never know Armageddon and Ullanor were the same planet?! 🤯
It’s actually fairly recent lore i think.
It’s not recent. It been that a while. It’s the homeworld of the orks which is why they keep trying to reclaim it and why it was the unofficial end of the emperors great crusade before he handed it off to Horus
Didn't the Mechanicus transport it to where it is now and that's the reason it's not known as Ullanor cause people don't realize what it is?
@@carlstanford7607
Yeah, I know all of that
By “.recent” I mean it was revealed long after Ullanor and Armageddon were actually relevant fluff wise. Could be wrong but I don’t remember it being a thing until like ten years ago
With 40k; 10 years is considered recent. Ha ha. So cool this stuff spans decades
You do the best job at giving super-entertaining, pertinent information, while not over embellishing. (Very noticeable compared to other “LoreTubers”). Thank you.
I love that the cicatrix ends at the Hadex anomaly, which was pretty huge in the 40k deathwatch rpg
I've been enjoying the lore for about five years now, slowly learning from the various YT communities and novels. This is exactly what I needed to wrap everything together for "where things stand today". Thank you!
This video is HANDS DOWN, the BEST lore video summarizing 40k I ever seen! I'm deeply into the lore of 40k currently, so in my perspective is REALLY good.
you literally beat down luetin09 and I shall use this video as future reference for anyone who knows a bit of 40k but struggles with the timelines and events.
GREAT JOB!
I agree, this as an exceptionally clear and comprehensive overview of the current lore and its unfolding narrative. Staying abreast of the latest developments can sometimes prove challenging, particularly for those who aren't deeply engaged with the tabletop game and thus lack a compelling reason to purchase the rulebooks. I find myself longing for Games Workshop to issue a lore-focused almanac with each new edition, a tome dedicated solely to the narrative, minus the game rules.
Thanks so much for all these videos, you have a knack for summarizing with style.
As someone just dipping his toes into 40K, your videos have been great because I looked at the wikis a few times and didn't have any clue what the hell was going on with anyone.
I mean, I still don't, but now it's only like 40% of the time, thanks to your videos. XD
This feeling will never really go away. I started like 3 years ago ? and I still have no idea what is going on half the time.
Whenever you don't know what your favorite character is doing just pick someone in the lore at random and imagine they're punching them, usually not wrong.
Awesome video. Armagedon and Ullanor being the same place has blown my mind. So much happened in such a shorty span. Fantastic video. Keep up the good work.
The armageddon campaigns were also all the way back in 3rd edition pre horus heresy novels so placing them in the timeline and recontextualizing them was actually huge for me
Actually, because mechanicus teleported Ullanor instead of destroying during "the beast arise" series it makes sense that they might be the same planet. It was 32th millenium when the event was done.
I’ve no desire to play 40k but I could listen to you talk through the lore all day long
Babe wake up, a new Arbitor Ian vid just dropped
Truly one of the most valuable channels out here for those who enjoy 40k beyond its gaming side. A comprehensive yet quick guide to 40k lore is something I would have thought unachievable, but you managed to do it. Excellent job 👍🏻.
This is probably not news to anyone but I love how the entire video can actually be summed up with "...but you know... things got worse..." 5:52
I don't know how or why, but visually this video is so c r i s p. The backdrop, camera, and editing is all on point
Honestly I love this layered story telling. First we have campaign books, which essentially are wrestling except slowed down to take place over hundreds of years rather than weeks. Then the event-books, big marvel-energy usually doing surprisingly interesting things with the stranger beats of the campaign books' story. Then the background books providing color and big vibes, though doubtlessly it's not all great generally where the good shit(tm) can be found.
I really like this way of looking at it, especially campaign booms as wrestling.
@@willroberts4993 yeah I'm not the biggest wrestling guy myself, but between the faction vs faction setups, the fact it by-design can't really impact the wider setting and just the general semi-improvised serial fiction vibes I think wrestling is the best way to approach it.
You & Occulus Imperia are my favorite lore channels. Excellent work as always sir.
You can’t deny Leutin09 like that!
@@inthefade yes I can
Give Baldermort a look sir :-)
Always an awesome video from arbitorian! This has got me so hyped to paint and play!
I love that this is only a minute or so longer than your 40k timeline video, and still has a tonne of new info in it.
A great companion piece to that very video.
Enjoy these videos, Ian - you do a great job. Always been fascinated by the lore of the Warhammer universe, and it's great learning about it in these simple videos!
You're the best! I find your videos very informative and engaging- exactly what you need for a subject so deep
Thanks for this video. Having been following 40k for 30 years it was great to have a proper update of the timeline and lore…awesome job.
Ian, this was a fantastic video. I liked all the little links to your other videos at the bottom and the images of the book series.
Top video as always, the hobby room/office/pink light backdrop is finally finished though, looks good! I bet your glad to have the builders out finally!
Much thanks mate for this great video!! Keep them coming, you are doing a fantastic job! For me one of if not the very best Warhammer channel!
This is the video I needed! Thank you for everything you do! Fantastic content, keep it up!
Damn bro, very nice overview! Good edit, nicely voiced, great video!!
"He was - of course - immediately executed for heresy - as is right and proper" :D :D Wonderful! :) Thank you for that line
Ian, your knowledge of the timeline is just stunning. Your delivery on camera is just so flowing it is a credit to your knowledge and skill. The BBC should have taken you up years ago; and if not them, then MI5. Thanks mate for yet another absorbing video release.
Even though I'm active in the community, I learned a lot about the Nids new lore in this video. Thanks for your effort to summarize the story of 40k so well in so few minutes!
This is it. This is the video I've wanted for the last four years. Puts it all together in a way I can follow. Cheers Ian! Have a cookie!
Ian these lore videos are outstanding. Keep up the excellent work. I know the time in research, editing and filming must be consuming but these are exceptional. Filling a gap here for all 40k fans who love the hobby. Thank you.
You're so good at this. A superb summary.
Best summary of the recent timeline I've seen. Thanks for showing the books for each event! Great job as usual. You're doing Tzeench... uh... I mean the Emperor's work.
Thanks for that video. I really try to catch up with all that's going on, but I don't have the time to read everything ! Nicely done once again 😊👍
Thanks Ian this really gives me a great reentry to the game and hobby.
Bless, been looking for a quick-rundown sorta coverage
Spectacular video. I was looking for lore updates with dates, and this video definitely closed the loops I had, and answered some questions.
I hope Lion and Robute can meet soon, the rift be damned.
mammoth effort Ian, well done bringing it all together
Absolutely brilliant video Ian. Well presented 👍
Thank you for lore update mate, much appreciated 👍
Just found your channel. Surprised I hadn't come across you before now.
You are one sub closer to 90K.
Currently watching your HH timeline. I look forward to digging through your library.
Keep up the great work
Very much needed a recap!! Thank you
Sorry but lore has always been evolving. My good friend since grade two. I trying to get him into rogue trader back in 1987.
Just recently I’ve got him back in with Kill Team.
He remembers most of the OG stories and remembers the white dwarf that gave us the 1st taste of
The Horus Heresy.
The battle for Armageddon was played out in stores to determine who won and that was put into lore.
Thanks for this, your videos are excellent keep it up
Illuminating, really. And as a bonus, your voice isn't as grating as many out there. Clear, simple, to the point.
This is a fantastic summary - thanks!
What a marvellous episode! One of my neighbours is showing some interest in 40K and this is a perfect way for them to catch up on the back story.
Nice update ... Always Entertaining ✌️💚
What an awesome summary. Thank you.
Great vid and bloody useful! Thank you 🙏
Yay we get the set back! Looks great
Bahhh I love your content so much!! Thanks for what you do 🥰
Thank you for this video Ian.
Absolutely brilliant
Great lore video as always!
I always like to play the game of "Is Ian in the room, or is he greenscreeend?" - today, I think he's there! Great vid as per! 🤘
thank yo my god just got into warhammer and been reading mostly all newer books for this newer edition some old ones too but wow been looking for avideo to help me with the timeline tyyyyyyy
Very helpful, thank you.
Outstanding videos my friend!
They should start the full rebirth of the emperor where is is no longer unable to move around on his own and have a new Great War I believe he has been sitting on the throne for to long. And if they do it right, it could be epic.
Fantastic job, Ian. Hats off.
Yes!!! The best high level lore video to date
Amazingly good summery, even taught this grizzled 40k lore vet a thing or two! ♥
Really appreciate these high level reviews of the lore. Never played but the lord is fascinating.
I have been immersed for little over a decade now in 40k and never played a game either, I just read the books, supplements etc. I dont have the money or any real interest in the crafting side of the hobby. and dont live anywhere nearby to any game stores
Thank you for this informative video.
Soooo good, great video Ian! Plus I am somewhat relieved you’ve changed your pronunciation of Tyranids 😂
Well it was a Thursday when I recorded.
I returned to 40K a few years ago with the novels and videogames, but the last time I played the board game, Necrons, Taus or Drukharis didn't even exist, lol.
Another brilliant video
Always enjoyable listens.
Awesome, Thank you
As always great video mate :)
Very good vid - cheers
YES new Ian video - you know I've been waiting
This was great thank you. I have friends into 40k and i always felt so lost trying to understand who was who and why. Now I understand it’s meant to be like that, there’s always a struggle for power
These are exactly the videos I need and appreciate from you Ian. Give me timelines and summaries and then I can research the events that interest me by myself. But the starting point has to be a concise (!) timeline, not 3 hour videos.
By far one of the best warhammer content creators
Him and Luetin have stolen countless hours of my life.
Great overview, thanks for that. Turns out, I've missed a few things coming back in after a while away... oops
Games Workshop should pay you for these videos! Really makes you want to get into the game/lore.
He’s an affiliate, so they technically do pay him, albeit in the form of free kits and box sets.
And letting me have the info early so all you people click the button!
This was Gr8! ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ Really excited to see if and what they'll do to flesh out the votann going forward
This was very helpful, thank you o7
Blimey - GW has been cranking out the background lore since I was last paying attention to 40K back in 2016: 8th Edition, 9th Edition and now 10th Edition, The Gathering Storm (3 books), The Psychic Awakening (9 books), The Arks of Omen (5 books), War Zones (? books)…
The Siege of Terra (9 novels) and The Primarchs (18 novels) and countless other Black Library books…
oh, and multiple versions of the individual faction Codices…
and the 30K Horus Heresy Rule Book, 4 Liber faction books and The Siege of Cthonia…
So… thank you Ian for the overview on what has been happening. You must be an Eternal to have the time to actually read and then re-read (Horus Heresy and Gaunt’s Ghost novels) all of this stuff.
You and Mira bring such a refreshing down-to-earth and positive perspective to the Grim Dark.
Checking in to show appreciation for basically every pronunciation of tyrannids being represented! 😊
Wait, the Sisters of Silence were disbanded after the HH? Holy shit, I never knew that, I just assumed it was one of those things were GW made them up for the HH and then obviously never used them for anything in 40k because they hadn't been made up previously.
I really like these state of vids
The nerd room 2.0 is looking good :)
Thank you! :)
Love the videos, i do gave to do a double take when you day the names different to everyone else tho 😂
Great video thank you
40K in a Nutshell: "Hey friend listen, I know the world is scary right now, but it's gonna get way worse"
Absolutely top tier content!
really well organized! I'm glad the story is moving forward but at the same time without more time to develop or marinate a lot of these threads seem almost too shallow compared to the 30 years of "Well its really really old and lots of stuff happened" that was the previous status quo.
Still mysterious elves actually doing something for once was one of my favorite ends to the warhammer narrative and it was one of the more interesting bits of the 13th black crusade and the arks of omen.
9:30 As a Tyranid player I can tell you that Hive Fleet Kraken was not the second Tyranid Invasion. There were a dozen before it. Kraken was just the second of the 3 huge ones.
Loved the video! This should be pinned as "You want to get into Warhammer 40K, start here." Excellent job summarizing everything in order and here events were happening.
After watching this i now know the presnt situation of 40k, 30 years ago I knew but the last 10 years been vague and too expensive for me to keep up with. Thank you.
Love long-form storytelling! It *is* quite funny how nothing of any consequence can really happen: look at how many British soap-opera characters have criminal records that'd warrant a drone strike, yet they've not served a day of jail-time in their lives... amazing!
I guess 40k is more like a wrestling-show maybe? Roboute Guillaman goes off the top rope and gets Abaddon the Despoiler in a head-lock... will the Despoiler be forced to tap out?
Arbitor Ian, reading hours of lore so I don't have to. Another great video.
FYI, a lot of human Imperial prophets who turned out to be correct were in fact given their visions by EoM. We have have a handful of examples of the EoM or at least a part of him trying to warn the IoM about the future and what is to come. There is fluff to suggest that Cawl's improvements in the Primaris are not actually his idea. It seems they may have been originally intended for first generation of Astartes. But with the problems caused by trying to get the black carapace to work delayed the creation of Space Marines enough. That the EoM in his rush to start the Great Crusade decided the Astartes were good enough and they didn't need remaining enhancements.
We certainly have lots of random mentions, suggestions and half-truths that say that MIGHT be so. Like everything in 40k, nobody can be sure.
What's the EoM? If I look it up, I get the European Public Prosecutor's Office, and I kind of doubt it is that, since I'm rather uncertain whether or not the European Union survived up to the 42nth millenium.
Though it would explain the endless bureaucracy, I guess...
@@daandevos122 Emperor of Man
@@voland6846 Ah, makes sense, at least moreso than the European Public Prosecutor's Office. Though it would be funny to have the EU still being around.
"In the Grimdarkness of the far future, there is only only war. All what remains of the current day and age are the French."
Really would make the setting even more horrid than it is now.
Hmmm there is quite a lack of Votann stories in this sum up. I know they only very recently got introduced but it feels more like Game workshop can't quite fit them in the global story beside "they are seeking more resources"
I am fortifying this position
I agree. I want them to be further developed.
To be fair it be kinda awkward the other way around if they just introduced the Votann and then two months later its like "oh and suddenly they're like the super key faction in 50 different super important conflicts"
I'm a man of patience, give Votann there place in the overarching narrative when it's suitable.
