How My Short Films Saved My Career

  • After making my first indie feature film, "Social Norm," I was stuck on where to go next and thought short films would be a step backwards for my film career... but hoo boy, was I WRONG!
    How this all happened is worth sharing because like many filmmakers out there, I was struggling to get my screenplays developed into feature films. I resisted making short films for many reasons but something finally clicked... and when it did, it essentially kickstarted my career.
    In this video essay, I wanted to share my experience making these two short horror films and how they not only opened the door to Hollywood, but also to something greater: an audience of my own. Hopefully aspiring filmmakers out there can view this video and learn from my mistakes (and success).
    If you would like to watch either of my short films, you can view them here:

    Hey man, loved hearing this story, and it's encouraging to me personally. I also directed a feature in 2016 that sat in post for years that I was ultimately really unhappy with. I recently was trying to get another feature off the ground (probably feeling like I need to redeem myself). But it also became a bit overwhelming, especially with where I am in life right now (just became a Dad). I love the idea of doing some shorts, but am constantly fighting the idea that it's a step back or a waste of time. Ultimately I want to make something that I would say is "my best work yet" and helps me further discover my style like you said here. Well done!

    Hey man im not rich but if love to help produce a horror short that you direct. I would like to do something thats kinda Hitchcock abd Carpenter blend. Something that has a twist and suspense in it. Not necessarily horror either.

    Great advice! People who are willing to invest will also decide what you have to make sadly

    9:58 looks like a mask I sculpted for Horrodome. Not sure if it is since its only on screen fr a second.

    Never turn your nose up at short films! I'm sure other directors started out with short films. Wishing you all the best! Btw I want to know which popular horror channels turned you down!!!???

      Yup! Definitely changed my mind about them haha... and I'd rather not call them out, but let's just say if you searched for popular horror short film channels, good chance it was them...

    I came here watching Alter before, and if they were under the ones that turned you down, I must say they missed out _big_ time.
    What I like about shorts is, that they aren't bloated. People often want to make movies that are "cool" and that's what eventually holds their potential back. Depth is key in the long run. That's what Ghibli does perfectly. (I know, not that horror-related, but there's a reason why so many of their movies, despite not being marketed as aggressively as Disney, stuck with us like that far away from Japan.)

    I love short films- making and watching them. Understand that after making a feature, making a short feels like a step back, but it's not. They're amazing.

    Short films (most any length film actually) dont make money per se, and 12k budget is minuscule in film, its still 12k and how many times can you or most filmmakers throw down 12k, or any amount far as that goes..unless youre wealthy, have access to unlimited funds, where does the money come from?

    • @DillonVibbart
      @DillonVibbart  10 месяцев назад

      Excellent questions. You're absolutely right that we can't be throwing down money like this every time we want to produce a short (I'm certainly not wealthy enough for that), but I would say not every film needs to have a sizable budget. I've shot things for basically $300 bucks that have gotten millions of views before... For me, every film is now about building up the brand and audience. I'm willing to spend chunks of my own money not because I'm necessarily expecting a percentage back, but because I'm investing my career. I think it will payback eventually, but it's a small price to pay to do what I love.

    i have some feature film ideas but i know its impossible to make these film now. no budget, no experience (wow i got nothing xd) so i need to make less budget short films, i need to making people liked these. and as films liked and get views i'll have network, budget and i will do more professional jobs. is this way true?

    • @DillonVibbart
      @DillonVibbart  8 месяцев назад

      While there are many ways to get your career going, it seems to me that if you want to be a filmmaker, you need to master short films first. But even if you grow your network/brand, you can only use it as leverage to embark on feature films. Make no mistake, nobody is ever coming to you to make a movie, so you gotta climb up the ladder yourself

    Great video. I'm currently returning to making short films myself after several years break. Haven't made a feature yet but the last short I did grew bigger and more complicated than I anticipated (Was a high concept genre film as well as my thesis project in film school 🤦‍♂️) and I needed a break . Now, I'm gonna try to see if I can go as small scale as possible.
    Definitely feel the pain about converting a feature to a short vs. converting a short to a feature too.
    Thanks again, Happy New Year, and beat of luck on your next project!
