Weird flex: my grandmother was a costume designer on this film.
Just wanted to say I’m 100 percent positive she would approve of the crop top. Crop-hoodie? Crop-sweat?
A jumper-crop? :D
Jikkuryuu also yes. 😊
That’s not weird. That’s awesome.
Flex away!
excelent!
God, when that title card plays my mood immediately lifts.
Fucking same, fucking same.
Its a Pavlovian response by now for me.
After skipping the FORTY EIGHT minute ad before it, sure.
I was super worried by it's ommission towards the start, but your comment gave me hope to carry on watching...
SAME. I was beaming and didn't realize it for several minutes after.
Bogus Journey is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Wanna play 20 questions?
Ok! I got one!
Are you a mineral?
Yeah.
Are you a tank?!
Yeah! You totally got it!
I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if the idea for this entire episode started with Mikey saying "Bro do you have any chicken wings? No, it's the apocalypse I don't have any chicken wings!" and making himself laugh.
This is my head canon now, and it makes me love this whole series even more.
the thing i took out of bill and ted was a sense of optimism. nothing truly bad ever happens in the world of bill and ted. they die but the afterlife isn't painful and is rather chill. the present may suck but the future is going to be good, all these historical figures are clean and without moral/ethical ambiguity of their time. most the figures aren't racist, ablest, homophobic or oppressive and are all just cool dudes.
I mean, it's certainly idealistic more than realistic. We know, or we should know that some of the historical figures are *not* perfect unproblematic bastions of goodness-- some were really bad people. But Bill and Ted are really not concerned with that, their focus is on feeling good and having fun, and honestly that's what some of us need. An escape from the crushing depression of reality, if only for a couple hours. Some need it more than others, especially when you feel like you can't ignore the reality of the world.
Bill and Ted have always been about optimistic and not hurting others.
@@cannibalisticrequiem darn straight. its the perfect comfort food.
Although the Bill & Ted comics kinda ruined that as in those Napoleon betrayed everybody and tries to take over the afterlife
Didn’t Bill and Ted hug each other in suits of armor, before suddenly stopping and calling each other a homophobic slur?
To be fair they’re dumb teens from the 80’s, they don’t know any better
The intelligence, humor, depth, nuance and texture is stunning. Who says 2020 has been devoid of redeeming value. Thank you.
I *just* got the
"It been 84 years" deep cut.
God bless you and that cut-off hoodie.
Almost has Alex winter abs
This movie is one of the pillars of my strongest friendship. In Germany, there are some weird words, because they obviously didn't know how to translate "Dude" and some other words, back then.
We quote it every once in a while since 20 years. My brother in law has almost exactly the same story with a friend of his.
This movie shows a believable fun friendship among men. And I don't think of too many examples that go in that direction.
Im afraid that for the new movie, they will say "Dude" in the German version, instead of "Hoschi" [Hosh-i] as they did in the 89 movie.
I blame Bill & Ted for my crush on Joan of Arc.
I assume you're a fan of the Go-Go's. :-)
She was HOT. Like, flaming hot.
Not to mention Shakespeares Sister which I love as a band unconditionally
You mentioned The Crow, now waiting for The Crow - Movies with Mikey
Please
Willow too
Hilariously I think the only movie I watched more than the Bill and Ted series growing up was The Crow lol
Oh yes, a thousand yeses
That would be a very deep dive. I'm for it.
We need more episodes of Mikey in a crop-top
Men in crop tops.... Oh yisss
Yes haha
Classic Mikey. "here's a dumb movie from your past that's ACTUALLY 2020x more important than you think". Love you man.
I, uh, dragged my grandmother to the theater back in ‘91 to see Bogus Journey. I was 11. I didn’t understand anything but found it all amazing and lost my vote on movie choice for like a year.
But it was worth it, right! 😂
Station
Most excellent.
I saw all the comments about the crop hoodie, and by gosh it did not disappoint. Your essay is eloquent and entertaining as always, but 15/10 for excellent use of croptop
I’m 47. I rented Bill & Ted on VHS in late 89 as I left UK high school and I’m 1:42 into this and already I’ve laughed out loud, felt nostalgic and know this is another masterpiece 😀
Face the Music is my most anticipated movie this year. Even if it's terrible I'll get a massive nostalgia kick just watching them reprise the roles.
I just hope it's not as bad as "Jay and Silent Bob: Reboot." I felt the same about that until I saw it and felt it was so bad I couldn't even have fun watching it. I got more hope for this though.
@@eadlynjune This looks better than that from what we've seen so far, so fingers crossed. Tbh Kevin Smith has lost it bad, it was about as crap as I expected it to be.
@@timk6181 Yeah that's another reason I have higher hopes for this movie. I love Kevin as a person, but most of what he puts his hands on now turns to shit.
were you disapointed like me? I love those films regardless tho
1989 was such a unique year. This movie literally couldn't have been made any other year, I think.
I have tried to base my life on the principles I learnt from this movie: (1) Be excellent to each other; and (2) party on dude.
The weirdest thing about the "Bill and Ted" franchise is that there was a live action series and a cartoon series.
They had no idea what to do with the success of this property and it shows.
Nailed it. You expressed everything that I love about these films. Understated, funny, well directed and entertainingly ridiculous.
I can't express how much I love the overlap of how exactly I feel about the Bill and Ted movies (being a gen-xer in the low end of the target demographic for these movies), as well as pointing things out that had never even occurred to me in this essay. I've always found these movies interesting. They definitely paved the way for Wayne's World, and were definitely influenced by Fast Times, but some how are a crest of good-hearted and not too mired in cynicism as either of those bookends of "being a slacker in the 80s".
"No one says 'dude'." ???
I wish they had called me, because all through high school (I graduated in '83) my friends and I said "dude" more than any other word.
We were in Philly, so it was more "Yo, dude" than "Gnarly, dude!" but still. The word. It was everywhere.
And Valley Girl came out in '82 and was a big hit, so it's not like Bill and Ted-speak was alien or something. Those studio execs must have been high on the wacky weed.
Dude, I still break it out now. :)
I've said dude 5-10x already today, and it's only 3PM. That word never left my vocabulary.
I'm 59 and I still say dude. Often starting a sentence with it dude, blank blank blank blank. For our crowd it was that movie Dude, Where's My Car. We constantly said Dude... Sweet...
And the Dude abides. And the course there was the Dairy Queen dude, a steak sandwich. And you got dude it up to go out.
young gen-xers and old millennials also had “Hey, Dude” on Nickelodeon
SeriousJr I’m class of ‘86. I say dude to this day. And I say it often.
Mikey in a crop top.
Thank you.
Sorry dude, but I think Bill & Ted predate The Crow. So really, The Crow IS Bill & Ted.
The Crow is sad because he's Bill sans Ted, change my mind.
The comic of The Crow started publication around the same time as the first Bill and Ted movie was released.
As always, great stuff. Minor quibble. "God Gave Rock and Roll To You" was written by Russ Ballard. Members of Kiss frequently covered his music in solo projects and as a band.
And it was originally performed by Argent, although the KISS version has significantly modified lyrics from the original (and the KISS version in the movie differs from the KISS version on the soundtrack). I love all of the versions of it.
I didn't know I needed Mikey in a crop top but I'm thankful I got it.
This feels like an old Movies with Mikey again. Much love.
The moral of the story is we need to bring back crop tops for men.
I've seen this movie sooooooo many times. I was in the sweet spot of being young enough to have seen the movie when it came out to enjoy it simply because it was fun and dumb, and old enough for it to settle in my brain and be remembered in my nostalgia bits. Thanks for making me feel dumb for not seeing this for what it really was. I always appreciate your perspective enlightening my own, especially for movies I already loved and now love more.
TROGDOR
I’m a simple man. When Movies with Mikey uploads a video, I clear my schedule and watch.
“NO ITS THE APOCALYPSE, I DONT HAVE CHICKEN WINGS”
TBH I still get teary eyed when Bill & Ted give their speech at the end and the music swells. "Be excellent to each other and party on dudes" has been my driving philosophy in life.
When I was about 12 and my sister 8, our parents sat us down with a big ol' pizza and two VHS tapes from the library. We watched Excellent Adventure and Bogus Journey back-to-back as a family and my sister and I finally understood so many of the jokes our parents had been making for almost ten years. That was in '98.
I love these movies. I think they're hilarious and they make me think fondly of my family.
Shout out to Alex Winter for being a cool dude!
And his incredible crop top
I've been a Bill & Ted fan since 1989, when I was 14 and the exact target demographic for that flick. I've watched it dozens of times. I never got the significance of Freud putting the vacuum attachment in his mouth until you said it. I thought the comedy was just "man out of time doesn't understand how a vacuum works". Holy shit, that's brilliant.
Keanu Reeves passes as a teen in the first movie but is squarely in the "I'm 25 but playing a teen" in the second one.
They were supposed to be like 21 anyway?? Plus I believe the first one was on the shelf for a LOOONG time, it was made in like 85-86. So yeah makes sense they would look a lot older
Kinda audacious to throw the question marks up over Eddie Vedder’s lyrics when the theme song to these videos couldn’t be deciphered by the most skilled lyric detective.
Mikey rocking that cutoff hoodie like Dang!!!
"It's in the filmmaking rules; I looked it up," is the soundclip I'm going to play any time someone questions my screenwriting decisions from here on out.
Mikey, your work is so high quality and inspirational. Thanks for doing what you do!
I hope Crop Top Me is as radically kind and most informative as yours. 🤙🏻🎶
Just make sure you always have chicken wings
_plays a sick riff on an air guitar_
I cannot even begin to stress enough how much i appreciate this channel. I struggle so much to see tight and purpose in a world so so lost. But I'll be damned, but watching so many videos on how to appreciate some things that others don't see the value in, or even just praising things that deserve praise...its just....i can't even put into words how this has changed me, and inspired me to inspire others. It's not often I can say something so simple yet so brilliant has not only made my day but has fundamentally made me better as a person. I can neither thank you enough nor promote this channel enough
Damn I love your videos Mikey. You're a treasure, I look forward to ever new video you post.
Fan theory: John Wick is the alternate timeline where Ted went to military school.
Gods how I've needed a proper catawampus
Didn't know how much I needed this, a little time travel to kid me and all the joy. Thanks and Party On Dude.
My AP US History teacher (who was totally Gen X) screened a VHS copy of Bill and Ted every year to her class after the test was over. I still love the “Waterloo” (aka Raging Waters) bit and “So Crates”.
Thank you, Mikey...it's been so long since I've had a Deep Dive or a Movie With...I've missed this.
If there was ever a time for a new Bill and Ted movie, it is 2020.
The world NEEDS B&T, now more than ever. Im actually kinda moved.
Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey is a better sequel than The Godfather Part 2.
It has been a LONG time but worth it, Mikey. 👌
I find this video to be MOST excellent!
But I also want to add a fun little story to these movies. The original Bill and Ted was filmed in a few locations in Arizona. Specifically, the mall is the old Metro Center Mall in AZ. I was born and raised in Arizona, and I learned a lot about the history of this film from my parents. My older brother was the one who let me borrow his DVD copy of Bill and Ted, but I've probably watched it over a dozen times just with my parents. They love Excellent Adventure as much as I do. I'm in my mid 20's, and my parents are in their 60's. Hearing that parents were opposed to having their kids watch these films blew my mind just now, because my parents watch it with me every time we stumble across it. I don't get along super well with my parents, but it is nice that we can share this.
Lol... “it was fun and mildly alarming...” 😂😂😂 . Dude your channel brings serious smiles to my heart
I think it will be Bill and Ted's Daughters, who will write the music, that will unite the world.
I wore out my first VHS copy of Bill & Ted. It was a source of fun and happiness in a time I really needed it. I love hearing you talk about movies I love, and I almost wish you had waited till Face the Music so you could talk about it too.
Executives: Nobody talks like that....
Everybody after watching the film: Excellent, dudes!!!
I graduated from high school in '89. Thirty seconds into this episode, I was already crying.
One of the great things about Movies With Mikey is that the videos are a joy (no pun intended) to watch, even for a person who's never seen the films.
And what an 84 years it has been. Love this stuff, Mikey. Keep doing what you do.
I will, in fact, share this with my dad.
3:12 Welcome to another episode of “Nirvana Killed My Career”
Bogus Journey was one of the films I forced my dad to take me to one glorious Summer (Summer with a divorced parent has it's privileges). I also forced him to take me to Terminator 2 and Trainspotting (I think that was the same Summer???). I don't recall his reaction to Bogus, but he was in hysterical fits during T2 at all the "wrong" (ie. ridiculous or scene chewing) parts. He had a keen eye for spotting the absurd and wasn't shy about it.
Terminator 2 and Trainspotting were several years apart. Like five. 1991 vs 1996, iirc.
Yeah that was 96 dude! Your recollection of past events is most non heinous.
I'm absolutely convinced 'dude where's my car' was meant to be bill and tedd 3
"it's been 84 years" ... but can you still smell the fresh paint?
This continues to be highly entertaining as usual.
Saw this at the flickers as well as the sequel. My friend and I had read about it in a movie magazine and were so excited to see it. I was 17 in 1989. It's a film i have seen more times than i can remember as i also had it on video. Am very tempted by the new 4k release as well.
Anyway party on dudes and be excellent to each other. Something that in 2020 we need to do more of and thanks MIkey for the most most triumphant video
Excellent, entertaining and heart-felt as always. Beautiful work, Mikey, you elevate this platform!
Watched it, immediately started it over to watch it again because i just needed this silly, lovely video way more than I anticipated. Thank you for all your hard work 💜💜💜
It’s incredible how you can find such beautiful meaningful themes in any film.
Mikey, this was excellent. Most excellent. Thank you for this, dude.
Yea... more videos about movies that brings me joy 😊 thank you.
I appreciate the ad break being right where the intermission was.
I genuinely needed this episode in my life. Thank you, Mikey.
"Take that 2020, you soul-devouring hole of infinite despair from wince there is no escape ... Oh, that's like a self-own."
Best line of 2020.
whence x
I was just thinking I needed FilmJoy today. Thank you.
This made me feel a lot of happy things in my brain. Thanks Mikey.
I needed this today, cheers Mikey!
Another great video Mikey!
I love this video. TY!
Yep, I absolutely *adore* Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. No matter how bad of a mood I'm in, it can always put me back in my happy place. And my favorite thing about it is how it seems to have been written to deliberately break every single rule of time travel ever established - and while implying that Bill & Ted get away with destroying causality by being too dumb to realize what they're doing is impossible.
This video is most excellent!! Mikey, your videos inspire me to be excellent to everybody.
Mikey? Did you personally cut a jumper with scissors for a ten seconds bit?
I LOVE IT!
When I saw that another episode of movies with mikey was in my subscriptions I wept gently. I love the way you talk about movies. Never stop.
Man it’s gonna be weird to see a modern Bill & Ted movie, but then the originals were pretty odd. Great look back!
This was so good!
Your videos are some of the only videos where I don't skip the ads, because of the effort you put In. You 100% deserve more subscribers.
Awww thank you!
You made me happily watch it again, thanks.
Excellent as always.
Hey Mikey, I bet you didn't know that Napoleon got kicked out of a bowling alley did you? Party On Dude!
Mikey, I love your work. This is a beautiful video essay
A Most Outstanding video, Dude!
A most Excellent video, you knocked it out the park.
I was trying to think about how to best explain my love for the work that you do, and I think I figured it out. You have a line in this video that goes something like "When I'm having a super bad day I'll throw on B&T and it'll make me feel alright." I want you to know that's how I feel about your videos! My mood immediately lifts when I hear the intro music, and it reminds me of better times years back. Thank you for all that you do, I hope you're doing okay in this crazy time
A most excellent episode!
This is pure unadulterated dopamine, thanks Mikey and Co.
Gen X here.... I have fond memories of these goofy movies. Thanks Mikey. Righteous dude...righteous.
Thanks for the video. I forgot how much I loved these movies but I love them more after watching this!
Excellent, dude!
Saw Excellent Adventure in the theater with my dad. Having seen a few of the trailers, I thought we had a pretty good idea what to expect. But then that opening shot started and I think everyone there realized we were in for something special.
I watched both Bill and Ted movies in the theater. My parents were pretty cool.
