SCREW YOU MIKEY That David Spade pun was awesome. Don't you dare apologize for perfection. We should all strive for that kind of comedic mastery
Agreed, the Spades pun was perfectly placed. I give it a good 8.5/10.
Wow that comment changed direction quickly, you win all my internets today!
Agreed, no one here is going to give you shade for your Spade.
What's up with Disney and all that subliminal dick? 7:25 Apologize for that!
Sean Dupree seriously
"Yay! I'm a lamma again!" Is definitely the only thing I can say when anything that was wrong gets fixed. It doesnt always work, but that isnt the point.
I really miss 2D animation. I love it.
I mean, it's still there in abundance. But perhaps you actually meant to say that you miss *_DISNEY'S_* 2D animated features...in which case, yeah...me too, champ. 🥺😭😢🥺
Avatar, the last Airbender, just as one.
I hope you've seen Mary Poppins Returns. It gives us hope.
I think it supports your argument that the last two times I cared about large scale destruction were in "The Iron Giant" and "Princess Mononoke."
Looove the Iron Giant
Y'know what? I'm feeling like watching something light this morning to start my day. Let's throw on Mikey's Emperor's New Groove--that's a fun, silly, light-hearted Disney movie, and it's totally not going to end with some devastating existential idea like "If you love something, someday it will be gone"...
As a kid, I couldn't tell Kronk and John Goodman's character apart, and was always confused about why "the big guy" changed sides.
Hahah
It’s hilarious how this guy speaks in run-on sentences
NO U!
Its also hilarious how this guy does not get A) how this video format works, and B) how these videos specifically function
"For what has now been 8 years." You're forgetting about Winnie the Pooh (2011).
Winnie the Pooh's theatrical movies have never been particularly ingrained in the mainstream consciousness. They're the kind of movie that you totally forget about until someone brings it up again, which is honestly kind of a shame because the movies are surprisingly good.
Was that made by the main 2D Disney animation team
"Be knowledgeable in the fact that no matter how much you love something, someday it will be gone" This is why mikey's video essays are the best, he presents them in such a relatable and comprehensive way all while promoting his opinions and morals and trying to make his viewers better people. This is by far my favourite work of yours, and that is saying something. Keep it up mikey
Actually Kronk is the hero. Yzma put him in charge of poisoning the drink, but he took the llama one by accident.
To my knowledge, traditonal animation is mostly dead in the US but it's still going strong in Europe and Asia. It may rise in Latin America (fingers crossed) but that's still to be seen, so it's not a dying art form, also the fat that it's been less than 20 years since 3D animation has become the predominant form in the US so we still have some time to see if it doesn't die down a bit and we see a healthy balance of 2D and 3D from the US.
Also, I vote for Guardians of the Galaxy.
Belgium has some phenomenal works
It's dead when it comes to major US studios for the most part, literally just because 3D/CGI is more cost-effective (what a surprising turn of events in Capitalistan). However on the independent level, there is still plenty of wonderful animation being pumped out of the USA and its little brother Canada.
Although (and I don't know if this is a sad thing or not) American 2D animation seems to be much more prevalent in the realm of television shows (both on actual television stations and on the various streaming services like Netflix & Amazon Prime etc) than feature films.
But even so, there is A LOT of beautiful and highly artistic innovations coming out of the USA/Canada in the medium of 3D/CGI animation as well as stop-motion (including a wonderful blend of the two). Matter of fact, _Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse_ is hands down not only one of the greatest animated films ever made, but one of the most beautiful & artistic & visually STUNNING animated films EVER made, even though it's a 3D/CGI animated film (or at least predominantly so, I have a weird inkling that they made at least partial use of traditional 2D animation in some of the effects and extra stuff but can't remember for absolute certain). The way they mess with the framerate so that it almost looks like stop-motion, all the extra stuff they do to give it that classic comic book A E S T H E T I C, seriously holy SHITFITS, BITCH-TITS! Go watch this guy's video about that movie and you'll see what I mean. And while you watch it, bear in mind that, somehow, that movie was created by the same exact animation studio who made THE FUCKING *EMOJI MOVIE* JUST *ONE AND A HALF YEARS EARLIER* FOR *_FUCK'S_* SAKE!
Good video, but I wish you'd taken a bit more time talking about the actual movie instead of the other stuff, or the pretty long rants at the beginning and the end. This is my favorite Disney movie and I didn't feel like you left yourself enough time to talk about it as much as a 17-minute video would warrant.
Still entertaining though, no worries there. I too find myself looking for more character and emotional impact rather than a constant stream of explosions or fancy special effects. This movie's got heart all right.
And R.I.P. Eartha Kitt. T_T
agreed
I think maybe you should check out Cinemawins for that kinda stuff. They look at all the great moments in the movie and focus on it specifically. Movies with Mikey is more about analyzing the artistic and social relevancy of films that Mikey loves.
Gotta vote for Guardians of the Galaxy here. Thanks for the awesome work Mikey! Keep it up!
The line "Traditional animation isn't coming back in any meaningful way" is something that in my heart I already knew to be true, but hearing it said out loud made me really sad...
Emperor's New Groove has been my favorite Disney movie for... geeze, almost 17 years now. Super under-appreciated.
With that, I vote for Guardians!
I vote Guardians of the Frick'n Galaxy... Only I didn't say Frick'n.
Been dealing a lot with the topic of impermanence. So this video definitely got me teary eyed at the end. Everything ends. Lean into that for a moment. Powerful stuff....I vote for Creed because I didn't see it and your reviews always get me to watch movies I missed.
"Everything that has a beginning, has an END..."
Graciela Guardado,
I hope you have seen Creed by now, if only for Michael B. Jordan's excellent performance... and his delicious swolledness! (which, yes, I realize is not even a word, but that is just how deliciously swolled he is in that movie. He slaps the orthography and male heterosexuality out your mouth!)
... which I realize half of that is no issue to you, as you are not male.
Ok I know I’m super late to the party but I really appreciate all the music choices he makes in the background.
You should do a video about "Song of the sea". It's a modern (2014) 2D animated film based around Irish mythology. I think you'd love it and have loads to talk about it.
God I love your music selection for these videos!!! Always just 10/10, especially because you probably get demonetised, or copyright struck for implementing them, but they just add so so SOOO much!!!
Instead of just like, low-fi, jazzy hip-hop music in the background like in so many other video essayists' channels
Guardians of the galaxy! And awesome review as always mikey, keep. it. up!
The Emperor's New Groove remains my fave Disney film! I love that it threw out the traditional Disney playbook for pages from the Looney Tunes and Simpsons playbooks! As funny as it is (and it's damn funny), the film has so much heart and I have no problem revisiting it any time! Nice review as always, Mikey!
"Disney produced Princess and the frog before closing down forever" Hmm... I could probably make a funny comment about that. I just better go verify that on the wikipedia, just to be sure, and... what the...
Winnie the Pooh (2011)? Oh wow, it seems that Mikey, me, and everyone forgot that happened.
One of my fave Disney movies ever. With Lilo & Stitch, this is such a fun adventure.
So for a very long time now, I've been trying to work out what "catawampus" means from context alone. It's not going great for me, if you're curious.
Thiefree catawampus is a term that means “askew or awry” and the way Mikey uses it means that the conversation is currently going off the rails.
making your city a character before you destroy it. Dude... that's genius
I will say this is the first time one of your videos had something that bugged me, saying 2D animation is gone. It's gone, from disney but it is still very much alive specifically with foreign animation the obvious answer being anime but also in american cartoons not film but on tv with stuff like Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, Steven Universe, etc. Even in the world of video games it is still alive with games like Gris and Rayman Legends.
The medium isn't dead it is still alive. And I know some will say it is on a computer now or it is mixed with CG at times and that really shouldn't be seen as a problem. It's a visual medium you can use whatever tools you desire and it is important to mix and match so you can work with the stregths and weaknesses of those tools
dear Chainsawsuit Original , you're one of the funniest video essayists all around RUclips while getting into some really relevant issues. I've seen 3 videos of yours (by the way, your trademark intro got me stunned) and I must say thank you and keep up the amazing work.
JARHEAD. I VOTE JARHEAD. PLEASE DO JARHEAD.
Great as always!!! EDIT: And yeah, look, it really is not contestable that the culture of this movie was appropriated. Unsurprised at the arguing, but voices like yours need to acknowledge things like this as real, and you did it very well. Thank you for doing it.
Gonna be real -- did NOT expect to be in tears at the end of this Emperor's new groove youtube video but
Man you gotta do Guardians of the Galaxy !
Damn, it feels good to be a gansta, aha classic! Great musical choices this episode. My vote is Guardians once again haha
Also, I love how this episode turned into a bit of a eulogy or lamentation for traditional animation. It does feel like a tragic loss
Here’s where I want to see bringing 2D animation back: a redo of the Harry Potter movies in, say, 10 years.
I guess they did learn from the appropriation thing. "Moana" had substantial input from Pacific Islanders in its production. It is authentic a movie as you can get and still be an original interpretation.
such a funny insightful video then at the end you kicked my heart in the nuts
+Agoonga [m] I do that 😎
Lilo and Stich as well as Emperors New Groove are the MVP of Disney's Bronze Age.
And Atlantis The Lost Empire.
Creed aka the best Rocky movie since Rocky 2
Dude, you are nailing this. I have never laughed out loud at a youtube channel the way I do one. Thoughtful and hysterical. Thanks. and Keep it coming.
I'm voting for Guardians
Okay, this one's the best so far of Mikey's Movies with Mikey.
Guardians this time its been put off for too long now :D
"And it works for absolutely no reason." There you go. You just summed it up perfectly
Love you Mikey. You are a ridiculously powerful creature.
I wanted to thank you for saying what I have felt in my heart for a long time...Lilo and Stich and Emperors New Groove were two of the best Disney films. L&A was the first Disney film I cried at; the "little and broken" beach scene still makes me misty! The pairings between Yzma & Kronk and Kuzco and Pacha in ENG is absolutely magical!
Down for Guardians OR Creed! Anything but Jarhead, really. I thought that film was abysmal. Although knowing Mikey's method(s), he'd probably make me like it.
What??? You didn't like jar heads??? I'm not saying it's a masterpiece by any stretch, but I do think it's a good movie, I mean the main character was devastated when he was told to stand down from taking his sniper shot and he lost his shit over that, to me that speaks ok what an individual goes through when traffic to be a marine, how they are made to feel everything that makes them up, leads them to seeking out the enemy and eliminating the enemy, especially after you have had specialized training, such as snipers. He had the perfect shot and his superior told him not to take the shot in favor of an air strike. All of that stemmed from the Marines we follow, having been broken down and rebuilt into Marines, losing their individual identities and gaining the desire for combat and killing, where combat and killing become their new collective identity and throughout the film they are denied combat and killing despite being dropped into the warzone, and at the end, the highly trained and specialized Marine sniper finally, for the first time, has his first potential kill in his cross hairs, everything he had been trained for, and has endured, has lead him to that very moment, and he is told not to fulfill, in his mind, his destiny that he was trained, broken down and rebuilt for, what he sacrificed so much for, and him watching the air strike take his kill, liked him mentally and emotionally.
Dude, this was a joy to watch. Your text is incredibly well written. The editing is amazing and both the topic and the angles you work it from are brilliant.
Like the only criticism I have on this clip is your intro here. You sorta mumble through it, and it's a shame cause it's so fucking well written!
Checking out the rest of your stuff now!
WHOOOO BEST DISNEY MOVIE
Rain check on that. But still a good movie XD
Best Disney non-Starwars movie
Lovely episode as always. As for my vote, I'm going with Creed because I love when Mikey gives me an excuse to either a) watch a movie I haven't yet had a chance to watch or b) watch a movie that I haven't watched in a long time. Thanks for continuing to do this dude, definitely one of my top you tube series by far.
JARHEAD
i THINK I HAVE VOTED FOR JARHEAD EVERY TIME YOU PUT IT UP AND I'M STILL WAITING
also I appreciate you pointing out the incredibly obvious cultural appropriation and honestly you were pretty gentle about it? Still unsurprised that people are jumping to argue about it. But since I assume you get a lot of that I wanted to tell you straight up it means a lot to me that you thought about that and acknowledged it and consider it a point to improve on.
+Aviy Drake [m] Thanks. I was incredibly careful to be gentle about it but ... some subjects just get a rise out of people.
I was on-board until it meant he showed that abomination of a generic "oriental" Halloween costume. That will haunt my nightmares.
Traditional animation continued on in Secret Of Kells and Song of the Sea and it is glorious!
I was really excited when I saw the thumbnail of what you were going to review here, but was pretty disappointed with the review on a whole - there was more talk of other movies people or things than the actual movie. sure it was interesting to know about the time it was made and why it had a hard time being received in the changing movie era but what about the the actual movie? you talked about 3 characters 4 if you include Tom Jones and not one of them is everyone's favorite character - KRONK.
I feel you dont really understand the point of this show, it is Mikey's perceptions of what he believes the meaning behind the film is, is far from just a review.
You really knocked this one out of the park. Style-wise at least, I don't know that much about movies, but this video was a beautiful piece of work (not sure if you can say that, English isn't my first language, point being: It was great, ty).
JARHEAD!! Love me some Sam Mendez.
I gotta say, I don't know what I'd be without this program because it truly does make my day and get me thinking and fulfills me both humorously and psychologically.
This film not only came out when I was a kid which is always the best time to watch a movie made for families but I remember seeing at the cinetheatre. hilariously enough I also remember seeing What Women Want in theatre which I don't know what space my parents brains were in but thats here nor there. As for drawn animation being totally dead, I still hold out hope that there's--well, hope! I see 3d animation as the current fad that are pumped out at children with wreckless abandon because of a) the pixar trend is still booming and b) they're cheap, easy and actually making money. I'm not sure that trend will be a healthy fat cow for ever and like what Anomolisa has done for stop-motion that brought it to adults I do think there is a huge untapped market for traditionally animated films being produced with adults in mind. It's just a matter of when the Weinsteins will invest in that venture.
As for the vote, I say JARHEAD is the most necessary subject I'd like to see Mieky work on. In 2017 the War industrial complex is more threatening than ever to societies around the globe and I think Mookie will bring a natural air of whit and critique to this fact that conservatives might be a lil more receptive to than the average youtube film discourcerer. Let's hope ya'll come to your senses, stop sucking the marvel cashcow's teet and vote for the pragmatic solution here.
hey mikey why 3 am, huh? why now? I'm a little worried
Just wanted to leave a nice comment here - I've been a fan of your videos since I caught the one you did for Princess Mononoke. It got my attention because it's the first Miyazaki film I ever watched. Since then I've gone back through pretty much all MwM and I enjoy them all so much. I shared the John Wick episode with my best friend, who had shown me that movie in the first place, and as much as we both love that movie, there were still new details and connections we learned about it through your video on it. So I just wanted to say thank you for that, and thank you for talking about this movie too. There are jokes from Groove that I still quote to this day. Great episode, and I cast my vote for Guardians of the Galaxy for the next.
I'm sorry people can be jerks in the comments, Mikey. My husband and I love your show and it's a legit evening event to watch your new stuff. We ate cake and watched this video last night. :) And regardless of the occasional dumb/rude comments, you obviously inspire some critical thinking and discussion, and that's pretty cool. Keep it up.
Keep 'em coming Mikey, I'm officially addicted. Voting for Guardians.
I fail to see how culture appropriation is either bad or good. Like isn't the idea to understand others is to experience there culture or only people of that culture can experience it unless were told so. If a writer wants to use foreign ideas to make a movie, why is that a bad things, should I start to hate Star Wars because of this, Is the now icon design of alien's space suit?
You do understand other countries use american ideals in there culture too, right? Im just so confused why people feel the need to separate each other because someone decided to focus on one aspect of a culture for style, theme or ect. without being a part of it should be shamed and unhallowed. Its almost like the idea of doing something that can bring people aware of something they would of never know is now being shamed upon because its doesent belong to them, when in reality culture belongs to no one and should be experienced by everyone, but whatever. thats just my 2 cents. Im sure people will view this comment as insensitive.
Exposure to other cultures is great
Exposure to a shitty caricature of other cultures is damaging and encourages you to think of those cultures as less than people
If all you do is cast a short, thin, Asian guy who wears glasses and is nerdy and have him to be the butt of jokes for every film you make, then I will start to question whether or not your intents with the characterisation is just 'all in good fun'.
Bad (or incorrect) interpretation =/= dehumanization. That's a non-sequitur. An interpretation of a culture that dehumanizes them could also be considered incorrect, but claiming that the reverse is necessarily true is ridiculous.
Toxic Potato were are you from? You have to understand that cultures change organically , they do not exist in a vaccuum do if , say , puerto ricans decide to incorporate more american habits , that was their choice , or are you telling me thta the U.S is forcing their culture onto others? Because that is just plain wrong (ps of you come again with the whole ,"you dont understand because your not opressed" schtick again im from Brazil , not exactly what you call a first world country mate)
This is far too late, so im sorry if it's a bother, but to anyone that reading through the comments over a year later... the type
qpopuiuzmnmb
describes is what we call the "token" character. when a cast has minorities of any kind added in just to appease the masses. typically, they try as little as possible with these characters, because they were forced to put them in at threat of violence/death/annoyance.
this isnt "racist bastards just wanna put the poor minorities down" this is an artist tacking on a character that was most likely forced on them by the studio, who was forced by people that think diversity is the most important thing, before plot, good character design, or reality. america has more white people then anyone else. deal with it. if you want that to change, change it. get into acting. BECOME the change you want to see. dont whine and bitch for people to do it for you, or you get the unwanted, pandering, insulting token character. and nobody wants a token.
Word suggestion: susurrus.
Thank you for diving back into the rapidly evaporating pool that is 2D animation. You've made excellent use of the major producers Studio Ghibli and Disney so far, and there are still some noteworthy smaller studios out there that deserve consideration. If you had any desire to return to the topic of animation again, I would love to see your take on production groups like Nelvana (the path from "The Devil and Daniel Mouse" through "Rock and Rule" to "Rockadoodle" is a hero's journey in itself), Cartoon Saloon, and Madhouse, and individual directors like Don Bluth, Ralph Bakshi, Richard Williams (outside of Ziggy's Gift), and even Friz Freling and Ub Iwerks.
Look man, I come from a country with a rich history of "tradition and culture" and Americans do eat our food, comment on the traditional garbs, religion, etc and incorporate it every now and then. And you know what we do? We do the same thing incorporating shit from other countries. Cultural appropriation legit makes no sense other than white guilt. And the answer is Creed, don't care for GoTG and I haven't seen the other one.
That's super reductive and not what it means at all
As a writer, i can tell you it's not hard to figure the difference between 'creative liberties' and doing a blind take on a culture you find exotic without considering that you are probably grossly misrepresenting real people and places and ideas
If getting people right is secondary to the artist's vision then the artist's vision is flawed and worthy of criticism, and there's nothing narcissistic about having a problem with it
As a white American, in these situations I always try to imagine how I would feel if some foreign country made this sort of movie about my culture and its history. And the answer is invariably: I wouldn't give a shit and would probably find it pretty damn funny.
Everyone complaining about "cultural appropriation", I humbly suggest you get a life and stop acting offended on behalf of people you haven't even met.
FourthDerivative Yeah it's mostly acting offended on other people's behalf I can't remember who but some celebrity had to apologise for wearing Native American clothing, which made no fucking sense to me. Saris are traditional Indian clothing, kimonos for the Japanese, kilts for the Scots. There are traditional clothing or headgear for a lot of cultures how is wearing them making fun of them in any way.
Johnny Doe *clears throat* so you don't understand cultural appropriation? That's ok 👌there is always room for learning. I agree that culture is something that should be shared and exchanged with one another. However, it is incredibly frustrating when a person that is not apart of that culture takes it and gets praised for it while people that are of that culture get criticized for it. For example Gigi Hadid wore a hijab in some magazine and received praise from the mass media however women wore are actually Muslim get called terrorist and threatened. Gigi gets to wear the hijab as if it were an accessory however to Muslims it's a religious symbol. I understand it's difficult for white Americans to understand this concept because many white Americans do not have any ties to their own heritage and culture, so it makes it easy to see a distinct culture and try to mimic it. Anyways Chao 😌
meikoblock and Rtkts, I sort of agree with both of you. There are many negative connotations attached with hijaabs since most women are forced to wear it and don't have a choice and islam as a whole is a really tricky subject and kind of an outlier. I know very little about the religion and the culture that goes with it, and I don't think I'm going to be reading much about it real soon so I'll bow out of that conversation right now.
Rest of the religions and cultures seem pretty cool though wear a poncho I doubt mexicans would mind, I remember a Casey Neistat vlog where him and his wife wore Indian clothing to go to a wedding and the comments all loved it. Indians in general love seeing people of other cultures like their stuff even if it's for an ego boost like "yeah we have the best food/dance/culture/whatever" I don't see them wanting anyone to stop. Quite the opposite actually.
An emperors new groove thesis with a Buffalo Springfield track and a bittersweet ending reflecting on the transient state of cinema and life as a whole. *creams violently*
If your voice is weird, I don't wanna be a normie.
[m] My voice is weird /now/, if that makes sense. Like, it's different than it /was/ so it's weird /from/ me? Also, I'm 9,000% self-conscious about it which everyone managed to peg from space.
Don't let the amateur trolls get you down. We love you man.
"No matter how much you love something some day it will be gone." Yeah, but you shouldn't worry about it too much because you'll be gone before most things are anyway.
Man, don't end the talk with that line and then start your tune. That's called foreshadowing or something, heard that on a youtube channel once. I don't want your channel to be gone, no, never :/
Also: Creed
Guardians.
I clicked on the bell for you, man.
Today I learned about the bell.
He sounds like Ewan McGregor in the third act of Moulin Rouge after he screams "Satine" for 10 minutes, gets beat up by some thugs and then goes home to mope while John Leguizamo tries to cheer him up by talking about pimps and whores.
Jon Risinger That's pretty fucked up, if you took a second out of your time to check another video posted in regards to the reason why he's talking like that instead of just being an uncaring ass.
Why would anyone automatically assume that such a video even exists?
+richard krebs Jon's my friend. He's good.
Jon, you need a blue tick!
Groove was and still is a classic movie. The idea of going full on with Warner Bros. cartoon slapstick made the movie hilarious and unforgettable. It was a fresh and new approach to a Disney film and one they sadly haven't done again.
You complain that Emperor's New Groove is cultural appropriation yet you call Moana Hawaiian... get your shit together Mikey.
Jazzy Waffles Except that for Moana they got actual polenesian people involved in both the production and for inspiration, they did extensive research right on the islands and the two main characters are voiced by polenesian people. It might have been adapted slightly (The myth of maui was changed a bit), but it sure as hell was more Polenesian than ENG was Imkan
And Cultural Appropriation is, as Lindsay Ellis points out, a neutral term, with individual instances being good or bad depending on context.
Cultural appropriation doesn't exist
It's basically white guilt
Renne Where is the line drawn between cultural appropriation and cultural exchange
You sound goddamn great Mikey!!! So excited you're back in action, and really glad to see this movie get some attention!! Keep it all up, we love you and your beautiful brain!!
Guardians! And I don't believe culture can be appropriated, because the entire purpose of cultural is to spread ideas. As long as you don't seek to obliterate the source of the culture to supplant it with your own, then you're left with both the original, "pure" cultural experience and the adopted experience which is an amalgam of cultures.
Without "cultural appropriation" we wouldn't have Rock music. It borrowed heavily from blues roots, and that was primarily a black cultural movement. I love Rock and I looove the Blues, so one cool thing begat another and everyone wins.
That first line should read "the entire purpose of culture" damn phones.
AuspexAO I'm going to gently disagree, mostly because I think you're getting culture appropriation and cultural sharing confused. Cultural sharing is stuff like white people eating Mexican or Chinese food, or learning a traditional dance from a teacher of that culture. Cultural appropriation, on the other hand, is things like taking religious symbols from other cultures and using them as casual decorations (like Buddha heads), using terms from other cultures without permission or respect (modern mostly white usage of "spirit animal"), or taking ideas/concepts from a culture and using them for profit without actually addressing the culture in question or giving them any credit (what Mikey was talking about with this movie).
There's nothing wrong with cultural sharing, and a lot of people want you to experience things from their culture! Mexican restaurant owners want you to eat their food, Native American craftsmen and artisans want you to buy their goods, so on and so forth. What they don't want is people wearing harmful stereotyped versions of themselves as costumes and stealing precious cultural things from them because we think it's funny or like how it looks.
Sorry this got long, it's something that affects a lot of people close to me. I wanted to explain it properly from what they've told me.
The thing about cultural appropriation is that it generally does "obliterate the source of the culture," even if that's not the appropriator's intent. For example, a seder is a deeply personal expression of the identity of the Jewish people. But when Christians hold their own seders without that same cultural background to draw from, it cheapens the general perception of the practice. This doesn't mean that Gentiles shouldn't study the Jewish way of celebrating Passover or attend a Jewish seder if they're invited (I am a Gentile who has done the latter many times). But they shouldn't try to replicate the practices of another culture unless they are explicitly invited to do so by a member of that culture. That's cultural appropriation.
Without permission? How are you supposed to ask an entire culture "Hey, is it alright if we use this thing from your culture in this way?" There's always going to be individuals who disagree with that notion, so do you base whether or not a cultural symbol is ok to adopt on the opinions of what is likely to be a small percentage of the culture? Respect I understand, but that goes without saying, like no Christian is going to be happy if Jesus is depicted as some drug addled murderer in a very prolific religion that some other culture adopted, but that's such an extreme example and that kind of thing never happens. The thing with this cultural appropriation nonsense is that it's always based on the most trivial, superficial garbage. Like that one chick at a college who was lambasting this poor guy for wearing his hair in dreadlocks because he was white. People need to be allowed to borrow from other cultures because otherwise society would stagnate because people wouldn't be allowed to take what others have advanced on. If cultural appropriation was always enforced, paper would only belong to China because they did it first, no one else is allowed to use paper. Or all fucking music ever. You think liberals today would be pleased with Bradley Nowell borrowing from Reggae culture to make Sublime? You think they'd be happy with Elvis borrowing from black R&B culture at the time to help bring rock and roll to the mainstream? And on top of that, it's only ever, EVER used to stop white people from doing stuff. No one is upset because Korean people are Christian and have a Korean Jesus, never mind how disrespectful some Christians might find that considering it doesn't follow along with the Bible seeing as how Jesus was of Nazareth. No one is upset because starving children in Cambodia are wearing hats with Jar Jar Binks on them, never mind how they haven't seen Star Wars, a staple of culture that certainly isn't Cambodian. Now I'm not one of those "White Genocide" fags who thinks that social justice liberal cunts are trying to wipe out the white race, but I do think that social justice liberal cunts are really, really fucking racist towards white people, and hypocritical behavior like that isn't out of line for them as long as it puts down white people. Here's a nice article I found on the subject.

Christianity and Star Wars are both things that were willfully shared with cultures other than the ones that produced them. If someone decides to share their culture with you, that is not cultural appropriation.
Obviously cultures ought to take ideas from one another in evolving: that is perfectly healthy. What a culture shouldn't do is take ideas from another culture in a way that is detrimental to that culture, because then the harm will outweigh the good.
And no, obviously you shouldn't go around asking every member of a culture if using certain aspects of it is okay. I would advise asking a few members of that culture (preferably ones with extensive knowledge of the aspect you wish to use).
Well that was a pleasantly surprising use of "For What It's Worth."
Guardians o' the Galaxy! Also that spade pun was worthy of cutting to "it's going down for real" and sax.
I vote Creed! Also I liked what you said about making the city a character before you threaten it. It made me think of The Cowboy Bebop movie, because alongside the action, the major set pieces in the film consists of three separate montages of the characters puttering about the city that do little to advance the plot. But it makes this city feel more alive and relatable, and we get to see the faces of the people that live in it and get a small peek into their seemingly mundane lives. When the big bad threatens the entire population with bio-terrorism, you immediately understand what stands to be lost because the film took so much time making the setting and it's people an interesting character in its own right. Anyway, great insights on The Emperor's New Groove! I gotta track down that documentary now!
So happy to see appreciation for this overlooked film!
I never knew about the troubled history of this wonderful movie before. Great episode.
I'll stick my hand up for Guardians now.
This video in particular is the reason I started supporting your Patreon. I love your essays! Keep up the great work!
Great KaptainKristian shoutout, dude's an artist.
Hope you talk about Rescuers Down Under someday, that film was frickin' breathtaking.
Here's a hail mary, let's talk about Brick. And about how that movie took lemons and made freaking gold.
You killed another one that I wasn't expecting, lets see you do it with Guardians next!
“A reverse beauty and the beast with more David Spade...” 😆
Anyone else just have that first 2 minuets fly by their heads?
Voting for Jarhead because Guardians is clearly the winner regardless. Also glad to hear your voice is sounding way better! And doubly glad to hear such great analysis on such an underrated gem! Really just excessive levels of glad all around.
On the city wide destruction point, I'm just now realizing that in Man of Steel, Clark/Superman has never been to Metropolis until its being destroyed at the very end, and he only moves to the city to be with Lois after the destruction. Obviously its a whole world threat, but Clark has no emotional connection to the city being attacked, which sucks because Metropolis is supposed to be synonymous with Superman.
Not gonna lie to ya
This is legit my favorite Disney animation film
Glad to hear your voice and speech are recovering! Hope you are doing ok. Love your videos man.
the part of the [muffled catawampus] made me suscribed jajajaja
2D animation isn't dead; a cursory glance at Japan will reveal an ever advancing craft, continuously innovating
I didn't know how much I wanted to hear you talk about JARHEAD until this very second.
I swear to God every video you make leaves me with goosebumps
Your last line before the end credits hit me kinda hard. Thanks for soing good works.
Back in my parents' day, destroying a planet was a first-act climax!
Nicely done. Your videos are some of my all-time favs on RUclips.
Sounding good Mikey! ^_^ And you didn't make me cry this time. Thank you!
You do, for movies, what regular car reviews does for cars. And from me that is HIGHEST PRAISE
Mikey, you are back, hope you feel better. Missed you
Something that I find interesting is, I'm 21, I was Disney's target demographic in this transitional era, '15-25 somethings" are Disneys most rabid fanbase ever and I think its due to this. Yes, they may have performed poorly at the box office but, when you listed off those incredible features from early 2000's I think they've really had a long term effect that we're only just seeing.
Quick fact check: Tarzan was a colossal hit for Disney, grossing nearly $500 million and becoming the third-biggest grosser of the Disney Renaissance. Fantasia 2000 was an odd case because it was not a film designed to be a huge grosser, making most of its money in limited IMAX screenings. It definitely broke even since it cost almost nothing to market compared to the typical Disney feature. So, the fall of Disney really began with Emperors new groove. Probably would have cost much less as well without all of its production woes.
And Lilo and Stitch was not a bigger flop than Groove. It was the one success out of the early 2000 Disney movies
Making Kuzco into a llama was not intended.
I absolutely love this movie. I used to play the game just to look at the landscape. I mean, look at Yzma's tent in the jungle. That is an amazing shot.
