I'm glad he always gave black singers a chance on stage and fought against society for the injustices.. it's a good example for others on how we should treat others no matter what color our skin is ❤
Great video. Thanks!😊.
I HATE when youtubers use an AI to narrate their stories. You can tell in this one when it said DiaHann Carrol. Just sad that you can't use a real person.
Right. And the repetitive script.
Sid O'Dower ,the host of Jubilee Show case was another host of a Gospel channel back in the day, that show cased black Gospel artists .
Ed Sullivan has my utmost respect. The man saw people of color as people. Thank you Mr. Sullivan.
thats the problem
APPARENTLY ED HAD the personality akin to a bottom of a birdcage.
@@mr.blackhawk142 This is a real insult to the man who was a popular sports athlete in high school and then a writer and man about town. He actually had a condition that as it advanced made him so stiff and uncomfortable. I have new affection for his legacy- from watching re-runs and his comfort with black guests---and this non-sense about his personality is a smear.
I strongly disagree
@@gregoryvanikiotis3214 Any particular reason?
I can't imagine that Ed Sullivan was any fan of rock-and-roll, yet he knew how to find some of the best talent in that genre and he accepted the idea of putting them on his show. Being 76 years old now, I'm like most people my age, who can say that his variety show was a Sunday night staple while growing up. Radio was the driving force for the popularity of rock and roll, but Ed Sullivan was also an integral part of that culture and that success.
He only booked the greatest acts of the rock and roll era of the 1950s and '60s (save a few exceptions) and I think he had affection for a lot of the music - especially R&B and Soul. His stiffness was a physical disorder (see above) and if anything he had to do the bidding of the corporate order behind CBS so when he was pissed at performers for blowing past some guidelines,, it was that they knew how to potentially knock -out what was quietly (or loudly) one of the most revolutionary shows ever on TV.
I will be 76 soon and we didn't miss the Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday nights.
He might not have been a fan, but he did Elvis a great turn when he vouched for him as being a decent young man on his show to America. You couldn't get a better endorsement than that.
Ed Sullivan and his talent scouts had a real knack for finding new and unique talents and have them appear on his show. Mr. Sullivan pave the way for other variety shows to follow. John Sebastian of the Lovin' Spoonful once said if you were asks to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show you knew you hit the big times.
Reality competition variety show that we have today on television can't compare with the Ed Sullivan Show. there was no competition among the acts just pure entertainment in a variety format.
In 1990, Andrew Solt founded SOFA Entertainment Inc. and acquired The Ed Sullivan Show from the Sullivan family. In 2020, Josh Solt left Google to lead SOFA as CEO of the company. The Ed Sullivan Show is the most respected and revered variety show in television history. Originally called Toast of the Town, it is considered one of the most eclectic and storied archives in American television.
Thank you for the information.
We have a really Big Shooooww tonight!!!A Giant amongst the industry he was..America was totally in synch with his presentations. And he was quite beloved for much of his duration in entertaining the world itself.
We never missed an episode of Ed Sullivan! We loved watching him! I’ll never forget watching The Beatles for the first time on his program.
We always gathered around the TV 📺 for the Ed Sullivan show
Same here, still remember seeing the Beatles, and being upset with all the silly screaming girls making it hard to hear them. Still makes me smile. I remember seeing a lot of bands on that show, Hermans Hermits, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, and several other big name acts. I saw Jimi Hendrix on the Mike Douglas show as well.
The most memorable person on Ed Sullivan's show was Elvis. Sullivan didn't not like him.
@@dorarobertson3608 You mean "guest (performer)" not "person". The most memorable person was Ed Sullivan himself.😜
Yes, Ed hated Elvis, this making Elvis the most "memorable" person. (😵💫) Does Ed hating a guest make that person the most "memorable"? I find the Beatles to be the most "memorable" because they had the highest ratings/viewership, thus more people "remember" them. ("Remembering" is of "memory".) Plus, I liked them best of all his guests. But, they are "plural" and don't fit the "singular" meaning of "person" AND "guest" or "performer". Elvis would probably fit all that criteria best. But if you ask me who most people think of first when you mention The Ed Sullivan Show, that would be Ed Sullivan.
🤔
@@We_Seek_Truth I said what I believe. Elvis is the person I remember most of all those who came on the Ed Sullivan Show.
The " Ed Sullivan Show " was a MUST WATCH all through the 1960's. It was REAL QUALITY TV VEIWING! There is NOTHING like it on TV today. It was the Very Best VARIATY SHOW on TV. Ed Sullivan brought on the VERY BEST in UP COMMING AND ESTABLISHED TALENTS from a VAST and VARIED POOL of Artists. Television producers would be hard pressed to be able to recreate today anything that would come close to the " Ed Sullivan Show " . Those that lived through the era and times the show was on the TV airwaves were really treated to a Very Special Television viewing experience!!
Elvis made the show famous.
One of my FAV shoos was Herman's Hermits "Kind Of A Hush".
@@Noel-ji8nm I'm as big an Elvis fan as you might come across, but Ed Sullivan was already a number one show --one that was resisting having him on at first. Sullivan had him on repeatedly for the great ratings--but also went had giants on from BIll Haley; Bo Diddly, Buddy Holly; Bobby Darin; Brook Benton, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, the Young Rascals , the 4 Tops, the Supremes, the Jefferson Airplane. and too many to mention.
That became "Appointment Viewing" all through the '60s - long after Elvis' 1960 Sinatra TV special, his last until the '68 NBC special. . So its wrong to just say Elvis made the show. That's not the case at all. He only appeared 3 times -- three monumental times--but that wouldn't make the Sullivan show last until '71 --and arguably they cancelled it too soon anyway.
@@AndrewVOdom The show would have been cancelled or run of the mill had Elvis never become known. Remember without Elvis their would have been no Beatles or thousands of other musicians.
We never missed the Ed Sullivan show. He gave many entertainers a chance.
I've ALWAYS LOVED WATCHING his shows, he did so very much for the INCLUSION of ALL TALENTS regardless of race...😊😊😊
Great video about Ed Sullivan..... my parents watched it all the time and so have I at times he is total history...again a great video....
He gave a voice and face to many future stars of that time.😊 .
No one would talk about Sullivan had Elvis not appeared on the show.
@@Noel-ji8nm Elvis.... 😂
The family watched him every week. We loved his show.. ''' Really big show''
I miss a lot of those old TV shows and have a new found respect for Ed Sullivan's moral compass and courage. He is a American hero that battled the networks and politicians official narrative for most of his life. It's no wonder why he seemed a bit nervous on some of his shows, only the People kept him going.
I now have a new respect for Ed.
You forgot to mention his beef with Jim Morrison of the Doors. Jim was supposed to change the part of the lyrics of light my fire and leave out " girl we couldn't get much higher" which Jim agreed to. When he got onstage he sang the lyric as is anyway. Ed was livid n banned the group from the show. Jim Morrison couldn't have cared less.
They did mention the beef. Did you miss it? I think Ed also had a problem with the Rolling Stones. He wanted them to change the lyrics from "Let's spend the night together" to "Let's spend some time together" and they didn't do it either.
Of course Ed's favorite British band was The Dave Clark Five who were on Ed Sullivan's show 18 times.
Morrison really leaned into it too! Didn’t care, obviously. The stones did change the lyrics, but Mick rolls his eyes very theatrically every time he has to say let’s spend some time together, it’s pretty funny.
He did mention The Doors
Jimmy was always a big brat! He wasn't a nice guy.
@@bjbell52 I think someone nodded off part way through this documentary.....Funny how people get on their soap boxes without double checking their accusations!!
what a contribution to humanism Mr. Sullivan... a class act.
Wow, Ed was like another Lincoln or Kennedy.....People of colour, over the ages have certainly benefitted from his unbiased attitude to life....I'm 64 and never knew he was an advocate of racial rights.

My name is José Jimenez thank you very much
Jiménez.
Very interesting but why must there be irritating background music?
My favourite was Topo Gigio. The cute Italian mouse.
J Edgar Hoover’s picture was shown with another man’s name as a friend that sat in his home often and giving him advice. Think the name was Kirkpatrick or something like that. He also was responsible for putting together one of the biggest funerals of all time for a black entertainer that had fallen on hard times Bill “Bo Jangles” Robinson. I believe there were a million people that attended.
Our family watched EVERY episode of the Ed Sullivan show until February, 1964. My dad and grandparents drew the red line on The Beatles. Damn that TV Guide!
Pretty tame stuff in '64 (even arguably vs. Elvis in '56-57) ...If he saw the Doors, and the Jefferson Airplane, let alone James Brown, he'd have lost his mind. Ed Sullivan was a cultural revolutionary in his own quiet mainstream way.
"Red brick home?" (1:08) Coulda fooled me.
Big white one!!
That's not the house; you can see the actual house on Google Maps.
I liked the scene clip with Bogart from "The Big Sleep."" Had not much to do with Ed Sullivan, I don't think..
Born in 1958 start watching Ed around 10 years old and never forgot him thanks Ed.
Both Carson and Sullivan had their issues but I thought it was good that Sullivan would let people make fun of him, yet Carson was not so much that way.
Ed was nice looking when he was younger. I enjoyed watching his show growing up in the 70s
Excellent video. I loved it! A regular, every day guy who made it to the big time. RIP, Ed.
In the 60s everyone knew who Ed Sullivan was!!
I DIN know, so speak for yerself... :P
Born in '69..and know my rock history ..but have come to really enjoy seeing all the episodes every Sunday on METV. Some of us were born way too late..Them was the days!
Ed Sullivan show was the tip- top of the heap. The A - number one television show.
He could be a very funny guy, i have seen a lot of things over the years where he had a riot doing comedic bits.
He went on ' Whats My Line ' show wearing some kind of caveman mask.
Remember seeing him do some bit on a show where they supposedly went to his house and he was going around introducing his wife and even furniture as if they were guests on the Ed Sullivan show.
Oh I loved ed Sullivan
Thank you Mr. Sullivan. ❤💛💚
Never really said who was the singer he could not stand. I suppose it was Jim Morrison of The Doors.
Why do they do that? Say they are going to tell us something and then don't
@@andreamcafee9970 Clickbait... it's the RUclips way.
He didn’t like Bo Diddley.
Not even that. LIke any employer, Sullivan & stafff answered to those who write the checks and brazen rebellion is trouble. I dont think Ed had a problem with the Doors- he saw their appeal but it was the failure to stay on the guidelines that blew up. That doesn't mean he hated Morrison. Its tough to push the envelope as Ed did almost every week with socially revolutionary acts--who increasingly wanted to control the stage and the program. It was bound to blow up....
@@donnasharpe3451 He didn't like that Bo switched the song out that they agreed he would sing. It was a bad idea to begin with but Bo's rebellion meant that he never became a mainstream cross-over act -whereas Chuck Berry and Little RIchard arguably had much more success in any event.
Ben Stiller should play him in a movie.
I use to watch it every Sunday night at 8pm
Then Bonanza after....
Jim Morrison for an example you don't ask a genius like Jim Morrison to change the lyrics on light my fire never ask an artist to do that and it's very unlikely Morrison even cared he was banned 🚫
Not convinced on the 'genius' label for Jim.

Can't believe you did not show Dinah Washington together with Sammy Davis Junior
There are AI errors 😂 like football and the Patsy, the Godfather’s Corleone family as Sullivan’s wife’s family. Did Ed Sullivan have the privilege of meeting with Popes or “The Popes”? 😂 Did Ed Sullivan have a feud with Arthur Ashe and Rod Laver? Was Charles Laughton an Alabama advertiser? Not to mention the liturgical dance sequence 27:36
Beatles playing i want to hold your hand first time in America on his show
Grew up watching the show. Because we only had two and a half stations( black and white ) and it was the least scratchy.
I was 8 when the Beatles were on. I had four older sisters. OMG !
Allow me to cut to the chase. The singer Sullivan had a beef with was Bo Diddley. Ed asked him to sing Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford, he agreed, but instead sang his own song titled Bo Diddley.
"A really big shoe"😊😊😊😊
Ed was the most important TV personality of his era.
Your title is misleading, you named on nemesis. What a waste of time.
No one tells an artist what to do. Brilliant Dylan got it right.
Artists (even folkies) exist in a commercial market. Thumb you nose at the mainstream and you will lose that big chance. Thankfully Bob Dylan rose to fame on less political material and arguably spited his nose to save his face. So many other cultural revolutionaries of a kind did get their spotlight on Sullivan.
The “big chance” rarely comes to artists, and when the pipedream is realized it frequently brings personal disaster coz some aren’t strong enough to handle it. Fortunately I have never given a damn about money and ass kissing for fame and the insanity of showbiz. The art is everything, buddy, and changing your thing for jealous wannabe powermongers ignorant of music is…. I’m a happy man coz I saw the writing on the wall. Save your words for the clueless. My mind was made up when a nightclub manager refused to pay my blues band in 1978. We sat in his office and looked ugly till he got out his chequebook, I am truly blessed I dumped showbiz. I was 27 back then and 73 now. I never kissed ass. Some said I was “the best blues guitarist in the world”. So what? It’s better to be happy … I sing arias now and live with my godwoman 3rd wife in the Philippines, collecting a pension from pleasant and challenging work for 30 years as a government male secretary. I’m the lucky one. All the guys about 60 and doing weird little bar gigs with no chance of a pension agree. ✨🙂🐦🐕🐥🐭🕺💥

There were more bad shows than good shows. The audience had a wide variety of musical preferences. My parents were very old but they seemed to enjoy watching The Beatles or the audience's reaction to them.
Very interesting. Thank you.
At 25:03 it shows a gravestone that has ED Sept.16,1880 to Apr. 6, 1966 and RUTH Apr. 4, 1893 to Aug. 13, 1973 but at 27:47 it shows a mausoleum crypt stone stone that says SYLVIA 1903 - 1973 and EDWARD V. 1901 - 1974. Why the descrepancy? According to the internet his parents were Peter Sullivan and Elizabeth F. Smith Sullivan..Why is this?
In your opening you state that he was born on 9-18-1901. Near the end of the video his GRAVESTONE shows he was born on 9-16-1880! Nice job. You sure know what you are doing! LOL!
I looked it up. The gravestone in question was that of an Ed Sullivan, but not THE Ed Sullivan🤣🤣🤣. What a ridiculous and sloppy mistake by the channel.

He was in love with Diana Ross, but the feelings weren’t reciprocated. As a result he successfully promoted an previously unknown singer named Frieda Payne with whom he had a romantic relationship
My father was on the Ed Sullivan show.
For what?
What did your dad do?
He was a prison guard at the Charlestown state prison. (Currently bunker hill college, Boston, Ma) He and another were held hostage. It was a big deal at the time. 1955
AI strikes again. The number of complete idiotic images having nothing to do with the script astonished me.
I remember it as Toast of the Town.
Wow... I didn't realize how scary he looks
So who the hell was the singer he couldn't stand?
I have no idea why the scripts of these shows are tossed in a blender and then re-assembled out of any order.
This is wrong. I saw Elvis's performance on the TV. His bottom half was blurred throughout his performance. That is censorship.
Only his last appearance was "from the waist up." You see the footage from the prior appearances and that taken directly from the first and second appearances of Elvis. The myth became that he was censored (and a network has that right) but it was only the last time he was on , to placate the many critics of Presley's gryrations and rock and roll sexuality.
So who the F is it that Ed "Could Not Stand"...???
The background music is SO ANNOYING! I couldn't finish . . .

Dean Martin bc Dean show up on Ed show totality drunk and could hardly speak from intoxication made Ed livid and banned him for good.
No that's not true. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were on The Toast of the Town, later called The Ed Sullivan Show on June 20th 1948. And rather than spreading false statements about Dean Martin, please do some research to find out that it's well known that the idea of Dean's drinking was actually a stage act that Dean Martin himself chose to start after Martin and Lewis split up in 1956. Dean called it his drunk act. Dean Martin himself, Frank Sinatra, Jeanne Martin, Deana Martin and Ricci Martin have all said in interviews that Dean Martin was not a heavy drinker. Sinatra even said that he drank more than Dean Martin. Dean left Ratpack parties to go to bed early then play golf early the next morning. Dean even called the Beverly Hills police to shut down a party at his own house so he could go to bed. Also to play golf early the next morning.
True, the drunk routine was only an act. Many have said Dean was rarely drank and was fairly straight laced.
Not true Dean never drank on stage, he drank tea.
Dylan stinks!!
I HEARD HE WAS GAY
@25:03 What the hell is that?
I just thought of something… living in New York City in the 60’s, I didn’t know about racism. My mother grew up in the projects of Brooklyn. My dad not too far away. Blacks, whites, and all nationalities lived side by side. They socialized with all kinds of people. I realize after watching this video… having watched the wide breath of shows on Ed Sullivan, I didn’t know black people weren’t accepted. We saw different black and white groups, singers and other skills each week. I didn’t know until now he really played a role accepting all races, religions, etc. He just integrated all people of all talents. What a guy. Those were real heroes.
A lot of white people didn't know about it until they saw all of the violence around the civil rights marches.
Yes!,The God's Honest Truth AMEN 🙏 ❤❤❤❤
Mr. Sullivan always acted awkward, but I grew up watching his shows in the 60's and was sad to see him canceled, and he ALWAYS had hot acts on. impeccable sense of talent and what would thrill the home viewers. So much music presented that a lot of us boomers, etc would never have been exposed to.
Ed Sullivan had ankylosing spondylitis, it builds up calcium deposits on your joints and spine. I have it and now understand his awkward movements. Take my word for it he was in a lot of pain.
@@JohnP538 Exactly: the smear that he was some kind of "stiff" (but accidentally booking the greatest acts of the century?) is really sad and an insult to his legacy because literally he had the disease of which you speak. Inside, Ed had a lot of heart -- you can see how he reaches out to Elvis to reassure the public that he is a "fine decent boy" and "we never had a pleasanter experience with a guest" --something left out of this A-I hodgepodge. Ed also took pains to shake hands and be close to the African-American guests... And yes, he went out to NYC jazz hotspots and knew the talent out there!
