One boat: we're sailing. Two boats: we're racing!!! #18

- When you are one boat, you are sailing. When you are two boats, you are racing. Guys, we are making friends!!!
This week, we make landfall from crossing Biscay in Galicia, and bay-hop from Ria del Barqueiro to Cedeira. We are having a great time with the Boutavent family, our cruising friends who, together with their 4 kids, bring tons of fun to our sailing adventure.
On our way from Ria del Barqueiro to Cedeira, Sophie smells smoke and detects an early forest fire. We jumped on the phone, called 112 (the equivalent of 911 in Europe) and a couple of hours later, the firemen had come and the fire was put off. We are sad to witness the effect of the hot summer in Europe, but glad the fire didn’t spread to the village below.
Arrived in Cedeira, it rained a lot. And although it was a good thing considered the fire we witnessed, it meant troubles for our friends on Boutavent, who discovered leaks on their boat. In hard time, it’s nice to have boat friends who can relate to your problems!
We left Cedeira the next day, and headed to La Coruña where we said goodbye. We really hope to meet our friends again, for more pedalboard shenanigans!

📩 ryanandsophieonaboat@gmail.com
Hi Guys! Tomorrow, I’ll film a complete tour of Polar Seal, our beloved Beneteau Oceanis 40 from 2007. Would you like me to show something in particular? Shoot your request in the comments below, and I’ll do my best to honor it!
Hi guys! I would love to see you guys cooking more😉😉...especially you Ryan😊😊 i think Sophie deserve that after all her editing.... Great videos again!! Sail safe!!
That's a loaded question! Ha Love your videos and looking forward to many more.
Hi and thanks for great videos 😊 Would be really interesting to see how much stowage space there is on the boat. Fair winds to you both 😊
Hiya Sophie, I'm still doing the makeover on my boat. I'm gonna buy and install a new anchor windlass. I'd love to see inside your anchor chain locker to see how you guys have organised it, installed your windlass etc! Hope you're not too seasick! Best, Pete.
YES!!! Amen Espen. Although Ryan doesn't cook much. But I will take a date night out at the restaurant. (Hope Ryan reads this) 😉/Sophie
You will meet and make life long friends cruising believe me !!Not to mention your subscribers I feel like your friend already having nearly finished watching all your videos in the last week since I discovered you guys!,
It is true!!! We’ve met fantastic people, and our subscribers are definitely part of our new family at sea!
Great video. Most cruisers will agree, the best part is the people you meet, both cruisers and locals. And You are correct, 1 boat is a cruise, 2 or more boats is a race always! Lol
So right about the people, especially the cruisers. Probably because of the shared experience. It's the major thing I miss now I am land based
Again best sound track of any You Tube channel. I love the style presented as well. Good job.
To fill in time it would be nice to drill things like man overboard, sea cock breaks off due to corrosion and the boat starts flooding. Sail rips in heavy seas, fog parts and there is a container ship in front of you, rudder falls off and you start spinning and other catastrophes where you know exactly what to do and are prepared for it. Ugh, what a nasty thing to say... but you need to know all this to keep them videos coming.
I enjoy watching your adventures. Ryan is a lucky guy to have a beautiful French girl named Sophia. Ahh what a life!
God bless you both, where ever the wind takes you.
Glad to see that there's someone else in the world who acts when noticing something is wrong instead of waiting for the next guy to maybe do something about it. The world needs more like you.
Thanks Wayne! 🙏🏻
Sophie - great job, calling 112 - looks like you helped a lot (imagine that whole hillside aflame)!
Yeah, you never know who is going to call first. It was nice to leave the anchorage knowing that the fire was off...
I love the soundtrack to this video. Beautiful, peaceful and a perfect pairing...visual and audio.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it :) /Sophie
The gladiator music during the pedal-boat race was pretty epic!!!
Great Ep... Found your channel this morning so got a binge on ... Ep 1 to Ep 18.... all liked and subscribed. I like a lot,, more please.... much hugs safe sail guys....
Thanks Rossipop! Glad you found us, your comment is very appreciated! :) /Sophie
Wow you got back to my post...Sweet ... can you give Ryan a poke in the ribs and tell him to smile a bit more ..... he has a dam fine looking wife and a boat that can sail the world ....just saying ...safe sail ....
Ryan and Sophie, I subscribe to a number of sailing channels and I am so happy that I discovered yours! Both you guys, especially Sophie, most definitely have star power.
No surprise that you're already closing on 4K subscribers. I love that you're not only great fun, but that you both seem so considerate and respectful of each other, and of the
world around you.. I really admired your desire to ensure that the authorities were notified about the fire, when you could have easily just assumed that someone else would
take care of it, especially when you realized that your boat wasn't in danger. Also really cool of you to offer to take care of the kids of your buddy boat's family during the rainstorm.
Much of the reason that I enjoy your channel is that you're salt of the earth, good folks. Please keep doing what you're doing; even greater success for you is inevitable. I'm so
looking forward to watch as you gain more experience, and grow, as cruisers. Please stay safe.
Terry, your comment went straight to my heart :)
I’m very happy that you joined the little community that is forming around our videos. The people that we get to meet through this channel (even when only virtually!) are for the most part a bunch of truly great souls.
Thank you for your very nice feedback!
/Sophie
Your cockpit looks fabulous at night all enclosed and the stick in light in the table. Fabulous ✨🥂🥂✨
I think you guys would have no problems making friends whatever you do and wherever you go. Yes sailors are really friendly - unless you cross their anchor chains - wait until you get to Greece...
Hahaha :) I would hate to cross an anchor chain.. that would scare me 😱 /Sophie
I loved this vedio, the kids enjoyed them selfs.
Thank you Ryan and Sophie for a great sailing vlog! I enjoy your videos and getting inspired from your life style! Καλό ταξίδι!
You guys have such a GLORIOUS outlook on everything!!!
Nice video work, once again! Galicia is one of my favorite places on the planet: incredible places to sail, friendly and kind people, fantastic and affordable food! It is a paradise that many sailors have not already discovered and it avoids the crowds. If you have the chance, visit the "Rías Baixas", especially the Ría de Pontevedra (Arousa Island ++), with incredible anchorages. The weather in the first days of September is usually very good in the Rías Baixas, with a kind of microclimate. This summer I´ve also tried the same "boats" in which you have competed and it is very hard! A hug and fair winds, sailors!!
Hi Eduardo! We are loving Galicia a lot. As you say, the food, the people, the FOOD...!
We will go to the Ría you mentioned, and also applied for a permit to navigate the Cies Isles. So there will definitely be a video about that part of Spain :)
Those little pedal vessels gave us the workout of a lifetime :p we had so much fun though! /Sophie
Love the use of your electric dinghy outboard. 👍 Would love to know more about this. 😊
Will do! :)
Ryan & Sophie Sailing. Actually how you like it as well. 😊👍✨🥂✨
Great episode, as always. For your boat tour, I'm always interested in how sailors set up their rigging, especially for boats that are usually short- or single-handed.
Sharing good times with friends, cruising in the warmth - its great to see this presaging the wonderful times to come cruising the Med.
We’re already having a great time, and can’t wait for more in the Med. coming up: Portugal! This will be a blast... :)
/Sophie
Cruiser sailors never say "Good by", they say "See you soon" or "See you later"!
It is definitely an asset to have a good sense of smell. Did your video stick at 13 minutes? No pictures after that and thanks to Ryan for communicating on camera more. Thankyou Sophie great vlog again. Many adventures.
Hi Derek! On my side the video looks fine after 13 minutes :/ I’m sure Ryan will love the comment! /Sophie
Hi Derek, Sometimes video sticking happens to me on this and different other channels, to cure the problem I go to the settings (gear icon at the bottom right corner of the RUclips screen) and reduce the quality setting. A setting of 480p usually fixes it for me.
Thanks Jc Regal. 1st time it has happened to me. It is ok now. Have fun
Another great video Sophie. Thanks guys and best from Jakarta (another 13 days here)
Merci Laurent! Et bonnes vacances :) /Sophie
I had to stop peeling my mandarin the racing was so gripping. Remind me to never race Sophie though, that steely look and determined face... I'm down with Ryan's shaka moves though. 🤘🤘
I watch a lot of farming channels from Europe and they all show very dry conditions. Good of you to get onto that fire so quick that that nose of yours. I'm always smelling gas leaks with mine, and not just my own.
California is getting hit fairly hard too. So sad all these fires
It was the first time that I witnessed a fire starting in nature, and it opened my eyes in a way watching the news don’t do. The operator asked me “are there any houses nearby?”, which I had not even considered when I called 112. I looked, and there were houses about what it seemed to be 1km away. In that instant, the potential consequences of that fire on the local community became so real and terrifying. I’m happy the fire department could put it off quickly...
I’m sad for communities affected by those fire.
Hi Sophie, first of all, congrats for winning the paddle boat👍👏
There are a lot of fires here in Australia too, farmers are struggling to grow food for their livestock,it's pretty bad😔
Just curious, have you devised a way to catch the rain water, and top up your water tank?
Your cockpit is awesome all closed in👍
I better stop writing,otherwise you'll get sick of reading,and that wouldn't be any good😂😂
See you next time for the boat tour👍😊
Hahaha :) no worries Wayne, I’ll never get sick of reading the nice comments we get. On the contrary, they are the reason I want to continue doing those videos!
Sad to hear about the situation in Australia.
We don’t have any device to catch rain water, but we’re thinking about that.
/Sophie
/Sophie
Sophie, how about showing us all the sail handling equipment. This might be bit technical but if you were on a motor boat you would be proud to show off a big engine. I have not seen a RUclips sail boat (a yacht) tour which shows how you drive and control your yacht with wind power.
Very nice cockpit lamp
I’ll do! I’ll give a tour of the sails and sail equipment :) thanks for the suggestion!
/Sophie
Great VId. Question: Could you please tell us more about the cockpit enclosure. It looks really nice. Can you sail with it on? How often do you use it? It's so nice to have a living room above decks, oui?
Will do that! Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll include all the details :) /Sophie
Re; your new sunglasses, Sophie. Not exactly Gangsta, I'm thinking Abe Sapien from Hellboy, for some reason, lol..
Good to see you both getting at ease with the cruising lifestyle....relax is what its all about.
We wouldn't trade it for all the money and hassle we use to have. Live not exist..☠
That’s absolutely right... the cruising life doesn’t come stress-free, but I won’t trade it. It’s too good :) /Sophie
When you were racing you could see me swimming in the background with a spout blowing out my neck. The kids were yelling, “Momma look a whale!”
That was YOU!!! ;)
Great to see you again. I loved the race! What fun. What do I want to see? Just sail on and have fun! Regards, Solomon.
A fun video. I need a pair of those glasses. I need to at least give those I sail with a chance since I can "sort of" read my instruments. Its all fun. Thanks for another video.
Well Richard... I’ve given up on the glasses (I’ll explain why in a coming video) The scopoderm patch is at the moment my “go-to” seasickness remedy... /Sophie
I just want a pair because they look funny. You look great wearing them. Wear them on shore and stick with the patches for sailing.
Another great video. - Thanks
Thank you Cyclomaniac! :)
Glad your having fun, you really rock those glasses....
Right? I think they were kind of made for me... ;) Wish they worked as well against seasickness as they do esthetically ;) /Sophie
That beautiful church ... Blabla bla ...
... it’s a lighthouse!
Hehehe ;) /Sophie
Ryan was right, on the last video - you are very sweet :)
Seldom is it "good bye", usually it's "see you later". Thanks for sharing!
Thanks bill! :)
BTW, Love the music. 👍
WoW, that was one epic boat race this episode opened with! However, I must know. Did you by chance get a chance to play on the slide attached your Race Boat? Ha! Also what up wit those sea sickness goggles of yours? They have now made two quick cameos. With No Mention of their effectiveness, or lack there of. Please do give us your thoughts?? I personally think them to be a very sexy fashion accessory! I'm guessing Ryan feels the same!!? Ha!
Hahaha 😂 I laughed :) yes, we did tons of the slide, at the end of the race, I even get stuck on it when I’m about to take a dip.
It was a little cloudy and windy for us to play for hours though!
Ryan LOVES those glasses. Not 😂
I’m really trying to give those a chance in order to do this comprehensive review. I really want them to work, but they really really don’t.
I’ll give them one last chance of performing on the coast of Portugal before I totally give up :)
/Sophie
Gangsta‼️👍
😎😎😎
Careful, the kid thing is contagious and seems to be spreading within the sailing vlog community. :) If you make it to the south of France, check out Port Grimaud, near St Tropez. I spent my summer there in 1982 and it was beautiful. Love you guys!
Oh Clay, I love our boat friends kids, they are truly awesome. But for now, we are waaaay out of our comfort zone enough to add a little crew member to the mix 😅
I think we’ll cruise that area in France in the spring of next year, let’s see how things turn out :)
Thanks for the nice comment!
/Sophie
Comme D abitude , belle video. Bon vent
Merci Jean Claude pour ce commentaire sympathique :) /Sophie
Love your channel!
Thanks Always learning, I really appreciate your comment :) /Sophie
Do you like your electric outboard? Would you buy a bigger one?
AWESOME ‼️‼️
Thanks Richard!
Hi. We are really enjoying your videos. We only discovered you the other day and we have watched them all now.
What is the beautiful Spanish guitar music in this video?
Hi Martin! Thank you so much for your nice comment :) I’ve used some copyright free music from epidemic sound. I’ve put the Lila in the description, but I’ll try to go dig them up for you.
'Maybe there's a whale'?
Totally Rocked ! Ok my question is : can someone take a picture from top of the mast showing your beautiful sailboat from way up high??? :) :) .. if not then how about a shot of your prop .. Curious as to the propeller configuration
Ah! I would love to do it, but i have no one around to help me climb the mast. I can probably stick the GoPro under the hull though. Let’s see how it turns :)
Coucou Sophie et Ryan
Great job again !
Ryan I seem to have understood that you knew a thing or two about batteries...could you give us your opinion on what is best on board ? Merci et bon vent 👋
Hi Nicolas! Oh yes, he will :) Ryan’s company is also developing lithium batteries for marine use, which we will test this on Polar Seal this winter. We’ll do a “batteries special” ;)
In the meantime, I’ll put your question in the question basket and I’ll have Ryan answer it in Q&A #2 :)
/Sophie
Great Video Sophie, as usual! Cruisers life looks like fun! Are you glasses working well? You said Boutavent is doing Atlantic crossing and you are going to the Med? Staying there in 2019 then, and crossing later ?
Yep, that’s the plan. We are still beginners, and we feel like getting in the Med now instead of crossing will have us build confidence and experience before we start crossing oceans. Beside, the Med is a treasure of culture and history, so I’m pretty excited to explore its shores :)
Glasses? Not working for me. Full review coming soon! /Sophie
Can you show water maker and mechanical stuff? Generator? How long do you run your generator and batteries!
I will :) well, we don’t have a water maker, but I’ll show our batteries. /Sophie
Ryan & Sophie Sailing Thanks! No Generator? You will need a Watermaker! They work well. Showers are a must right?
No generator either :/ you are right, at some points, it is probably an investment we will have to make. For now, we are not planning to be away from harbors for weeks and weeks at a time, so we do with what we have.
There are so many things we need to get.. a new anchor (ours is too light), a downwind sail, an arch to carry the dinghy and new solar panels... the list is a little long at the moment :)
/Sophie
Interesting watercraft 😁😋🤣
A kickass blue water cruiser ;)
its good to see you both enjoying your journey {:-) PAV
Thanks Pav! We’re rally starting to have fun now :) /Sophie
Loving your story so far, interested to see which way you go after Gibralter? We will be sailing just west of Athens for a week in October.
Thanks Pete! We are heading in the Med, but will probably still be in Spain by October. Happy sailing! /Sophie
What are your plans over winter? Hole up somewhere, or press on sailing?
We are making our winter plans as we speak. Talking about staying at a marina between Malaga and Barcelona, unclear exactly where yet. Take a two months break and be back at it next spring. That’s how it looks for now :)
/Sophie
Are you giving up the sea sickness glasses yet? 🙂
I must say... yes I am. But I’ll still do a full review ;) /Sophie
I predict 40k followers in one year’s time.
(Ryan) Thanks Velocita, I'm know Sophie appreciates these kinds words.
awesome
Welcome to cruising :-) :-) :-) :-)
Thanks Sheldon! It’s not a bad life at all! :) /Sophie
The cruising life takes a lot of the sting out of passage making. Where are you guys wintering in Med...?
We haven’t figured it out yet 😱 we’re having our eyes on Valencia, but we need to start getting serious about it.
I would be interested in knowing more about your crew member. How did he liked the trip so far?
He’s left already! But he really enjoyed the trip I think :) it was very nice to have an extra pair of hands across biscay! /Sophie
The west coast of USA is on fire this summer also. Hopefully not at bad as last summer. So much smoke last few days authorities have given a health alert and canceled outdoor activities.
Oh god. I really hope that everyone is ok...
ther tiniest bit of swell and sophie is off she needs to do the med in a 29 footer
Can I see the bilge please ? Ha ha.
The bilge is fine, the keel would be another story ;) /Sophie
Yes. I reopened it up again and it played ok x
Gosh, that got me worried for a minute 😅 I always triple check that everything looks good before releasing anything, glad it went well in the end :) /Sophie
Cheers Sophie. I will check my end first next time. Onwards and upwards x
Great video. Could you show the engine. Thank You .
Will do! Thanks :) /Sophie
Hei ! Venter på dere i Torrevieja !
When you are one boat, you are sailing. When you are two boats, you are racing...... never a more true word said.
We never thought we’d be that kind of people... but when you’ve spend a lot of money on sails, it’s very satisfying to see a clear difference in the boat’s performance :) /Sophie
Berätta mera om hur man vet vilka vhf kanaler som får användas i området man befinner sig i, har ni avtalt på förhand vilke kanal ni bruker båt till båt, osv. MVH. Erik
69 är väl pleasure i princip överallt.
Ah you don"t like head to sea, check out Hatti in north east breeze on my channel
I’ll do that! /Sophie
Is it an asset or a liability to have sensitive nose on a sailboat ?
It’s both Sciolist, it’s both... many days, I wish the head was farther away from... basically everything on the boat :p /Sophie
Sophie, I too have a sensitive nose but I have been told that this is part of my high functioning autism. My neighbour burns cut up palettes in the firepit of his back yard, and the smell is worse than marijuana burning. Very putrid for both.
Okay Request Time, Bet you cannot stand on your head in the head ;-)
You’re right. I couldn’t! 🤣
