If you fill you container to the fill line with water and record the weight of the water, just multiply that weight by .86. 86 represents the specific gravity as compared to water which is 1.0. If you water weight was 14 Oz. you multiply 14X.86 and you will get your total wax equivalent which is 12.04 Oz. This will work for grams as well. To figure out your FO weight divide your FO % by the wax weight. if you wanted 8% fragrance load the number would look like this 1.08. 12.04/1.08 =11.15. this is your wax weight you will use for your candle. Now take your adjusted wax weight subtract from your total wax weight to give you your FO weight. 12.04 Oz-11.15 Oz=.89 Oz. This way you don't have to clean up a container after. Just another method of doing this. I made a spread sheet that makes it very easy that will do all of this math for you.

Hi Hannah, such a great video but I do have a suggestion. You let us know that we need to measure our wax to see how much our containers will hold. However, you have a separate video with how to measure the amount of fragrance oils. Can you do a video combining the two? So, we can see how you incorporate lets say 10% fragrance oils to 16oz of wax?
Thank you again for all of your content as this is really helpful for people like myself.

Would like to add, for all the confusion in the comments I've read below on how a 16 oz jar can only hold 12-13 oz melted wax, but 16 oz of water. Water is denser than wax by 14%. So you have to subtract out the extra 14% water weight when figuring how much wax your container will hold. You will also need to figure in your fragrance oil weight and/or your dye, if using dye. I've posted a couple of different comments below showing how to determine your wax weight and fragrance oil weight in any container. Hope this helps. There are so many variables to candle-making that it would take Hannah forever to try to get it all on here. One thing in beginner candle-making is test, test, test, keep notes, standardize your candle-making system.

It SEEMS that you are saying multiply the volume by .75 to get the wax weight.

If I'm correct, I believe you would sell it as a 12oz candle because the 12oz comes from the melted wax which is the candle. The candle is not the jar, it's what's in the jar, which is the wax. The 16oz is the mason jar itself, but you're not selling only the jar, you're selling the candle which you happened to put in the jar (Hence why she set the scale to 0.0oz). Hope that helped 😅!

My aunt got me three 5.5 oz candle containers and my biggest confusion has been determining how much wax I need for them. First time I made candles with 6 oz containers I bought, I ended up not melting enough wax and I don't want to screw that part up again or even worse, melt too much wax and waste it.
