There have been many instances where I experienced road rage in the city, without any provocation. One particular incident was harrowing. We were driving a TN registered car from Bangalore to Coorg. On the highway just after Mysore, a Tata Ace rear-ended our car. Luckily none of us were injured. When we stopped the car and got out to check the damage, the Tata Ace too stopped right behind us. The driver was driving without a licence and he accepted that the accident was his mistake. Meanwhile, a crowd gathered, which consisted mostly of villagers. We asked the driver to pay for the damage, a broken bumper that cost Rs 6000. By this time, the crowd got involved. They noticed our vehicle's registration and started getting aggressive with us. With the crowd's support, the driver refused to pay up. I tried to note down the Tata's registration, but the mob blocked it. By this time, it was getting dangerous and we decided to call the police. As soon as I dialled 100, my mobile was snatched from my hand and I was punched on my face. My friend pulled me into the car and shut the window, which was then smashed before we could speed off from the scene. Not to the mention the abusive language used against us, the physical aggression was just because we were driving a vehicle registered in Tamil Nadu. I am very sceptical these days even when driving into Bangalore. The anti-Tamil rhetoric and violence disgusts me. That is not entirely true. I lived in Bangalore for two years between 2008 and 2010. While there, I was using Tamil Nadu registered vehicles. There have been many instances where I experienced road rage in the city, without any provocation. One particular incident was harrowing. We were driving a TN registered car from Bangalore to Coorg. On the highway just after Mysore, a Tata Ace rear-ended our car. Luckily none of us were injured. When we stopped the car and got out to check the damage, the Tata Ace too stopped right behind us. The driver was driving without a licence and he accepted that the accident was his mistake. Meanwhile, a crowd gathered, which consisted mostly of villagers. We asked the driver to pay for the damage, a broken bumper that cost Rs 6000. By this time, the crowd got involved. They noticed our vehicle's registration and started getting aggressive with us. With the crowd's support, the driver refused to pay up. I tried to note down the Tata's registration, but the mob blocked it. By this time, it was getting dangerous and we decided to call the police. As soon as I dialled 100, my mobile was snatched from my hand and I was punched on my face. My friend pulled me into the car and shut the window, which was then smashed before we could speed off from the scene. Not to the mention the abusive language used against us, the physical aggression was just because we were driving a vehicle registered in Tamil Nadu. I am very sceptical these days even when driving into Bangalore. The anti-Tamil rhetoric and violence disgusts me. I can assure you that this isn't the same for Karantaka-registered vehicles when driving in Tamil Nadu. I have driven KA registered vehicles in TN numerous times and not once have I experience such rotten behaviour.
