You would be able to do a setup with a vive tracker or even with just a simple iphone mounted on the camera. The best reliable setup would be using a mosys tracker (it is expensive), but amazing accuracy and you can also get the camera's follow focus to match the virtual camera in Unreal.

That's a very nice and powerful setup with the Ultimatte. I might have to get the mini version to pair with my ATEM Mini Pro, but it'll be some time in the future.
Hi Andre thanks for the video, I have a question. I intend to buy the HD 12 mini. Is it possible through the "program out" or the "monitor out" of the Blackmagic Send the signal to an acquisition card (for example the Elgato Cam Link Pro or the Blackmagic Recorder 4K) and bring the signal into VMIX? Thanks for your patience!
If you are asking if the keyed out footage would come into VMix I think the answer is no. You will need an Ultimatte that will send both Key and Fill. Then the system you are using (VMix) would have to “understand” key and fill. I’ve never used VMix so I’m not sure if it could or not. If you are asking if you can send the final composited shot into VMix then that answer is yes. Hope that helps.
@@SociallyU Thanks André!. By reading the blackmagic ultimatte manual, there is the possibility of sending the fill out to the "monitor out", as well as obviously the program. I need to figure out how vmix interprets this signal

Great video! Thanks for this... I'd love to know in the examples you showed at the beginning, which were real video plates you shot and which were unreal or stock footage? I've been searching for a place to but real stock background plates to use.
Hi there! Thanks for the kind words. I also can't find good plates. So all the plates we are going on location to record. All of the first shots until 0:31 are custom plates we shot. Starting at 31 is Unreal and all the shots remaining are Unreal except for 0:35 blonde lady in a classroom which is also a physical plate.
This is amazingly keyed! Do you think the crisp hair results are achievable with a Ultimatte 12 HD? Or is a lot of the fine detail magic in the 4k version. Thank you!
Great question. I've only ever used the 4k versions, but I think the HD versions would give you a really great result as well from what I've seen from others.
Nice done! Gonna use the ultimatte first time next friday for previz greenscreen interviews - definetely will record the output , not sure if I postpro (composite) the recording anymore ;-O
Yeah it's really amazing. We don't do any post compositing now. That was a nightmare. For talking head / talk show / training videos we believe this is more than enough and our customers are amazed with the output. We just released our first 'debrief' video where we breakdown a day of filming and I go into some additional details about keying at the beginning if that's of interest. - André
Great tut, thank you - can you load video backgrounds or animations as the background key? instead of just stills, I've been looking everywhere cant find the info...
The Ultimatte has an ability to load stills into it, however, we haven't had success making that work yet. We are sending a background via SDI into the unit. So you can play a video and route that source into the background layer of the Ultimatte. They do not have the ability to upload a video and play it back from the Ultimatte itself.
Hi! How can we turn off 100% cilp function, because became magenta tint at the overexposed yellow areas? We can't solve this issue with Ultimatte 12. It was not a problem at the Ultimatte 500. Thanks for your response.
Love that you are creating videos like this! I would be highly interested in seeing how you are using unreal engine! are you able to control DOF in unreal through your live cams?
Thanks for letting us know Grayson! We are doing a lot of things with Unreal so stay tuned! Right now we have been setting the DoF manually, but will be changing lenses soon and purchasing some hardware that will transmit that information to Unreal.
@@SociallyU The use of Unreal is a very big trend right now. There are almost no RUclips tutorials on how to use Blackmagic Ultimatte 12 with Unreal Engine 5. If you make this, it will be very useful for beginners!
Hello Andre! :) I Have a question @SociallyU Studio I wanted to ask you if in this context (video in green screen to work with ultimatte) it is better to shoot in log, or already set a neutral/standard color profile in camera? Thanks and congratulations for the work you do! :)
Hi there, because the Ultimatte is a live keyer we have a standard color profile in place. Our goal is to get a final image out live. If you shoot log, you will be doing a key in post and the Ultimatte isn't the solution. We have found that the Delta keyer in Davinci Resolve is really great and that's what we would recommend if you are recording live and keying in post.
Incredible results, would love to know more about your setup. I have just built my first green screen curve and want to up my game in virtual production. I am thinking about starting with the ultimatte 12 hd mini, as I have a hdmi only workflow, but realise this limits me to one camera. If I want to have a multi camera setup in an unreal engine environment would I need an ultimatte for each camera? Also would love to know what the app was that you were using to control the lighting?
Hi there, yes you would need an ultimatte for each camera. You could have a decklink installed and then output multiple cameras from Unreal into each of the Ultimattes. We are doing a 4k end to end workflow so the computer can only handle one camera output. We are using luminair.app to DMX control our lighting.
Fantastic Video, hope you can share in the future, some of the more advanced features that Ultimate 12 has. I do have a question, you mention the light of your background is at 44 IRE, and I notice the false color shows pretty even. I have tried this, but my result is a green horizontal zone that moves up or down if the intensity is adjusted. Are you using some kind of range in the IRE display? Hope you can share your take on this. Thanks.
Thank you. There is so much the Ultimatte can do! In our latest episode of the debrief I show some more details about keying. False color is the secret. It is definitely a challenge to get an even lighting on the background. If you are getting that horizontal zone I would try to diffuse the light or back it up. I'm not using a range. That's just a lot of time spent working on the lighting! Hope this helps and thanks for watching! -André
great video I don't have a ultimatte but was thinking of getting the small one they made. I wanted to ask if i have a projector can i output from unreal to the projector full screen I don't have a decklink duo either I will get one soon just wanted to make background and send them to the projector
You sure could. If you aren't trying to have camera movement it will work pretty great. Potato Jet has a cool video on a similar idea but with TVs. ruclips.net/video/2ypMsmoCEWI/видео.html
Amazing video, really nicely done! Maybe you can chime in with your background in using Ultimatte - doing the same here and generally speaking my settings and approaches are along the same lines you describe. I usually do Matte Density first and Veil later, but this is just personal preference. What do you do if you have a relatively perfect key for a dark haired talent and once you swap for blond hair it looks like as if there is small "movement" (noise, artefacts) in the hair area. No pun intended - but literally pulling my hair out.
Blonde hair is challenging! Things I've learned. Make sure that false color is extremely even. Second, having a hair light that can counteract any green spill is important. Third, if the background is bright, sometimes having a rim light actually makes it look worse. Let us know any tips you figure out! We are all in this together. Oh and also, I try to never adjust matte density or black gloss with blonde hair. as soon as you change those dials it will affect the hair. And another one :) We use Chromalight paint and it really limits the spill onto the talent.
Sorry about that, we changed some things around in Notion. I've updated the description to have the new link to the document. Let us know if that doesn't work for you. - André
Amazing! Thank you so much for your video. The light, colors, etc are awesome ! May I have a question. Where do you find background picture ? Do you create yourself the background ? With Unreal Engine for example ?
We do two different things for the backgrounds.1. We go on location and take plates measuring specific height, distance, focus, etc. and then put our cameras at those exact same settings back in the studio or 2. We use Unreal 5 and create virtual worlds. We are doing our best to use Unreal as much as possible.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Wondering what cameras you're using and having the best success with for Ultimatte and maybe a touch of camera settings. We're using a Sony FS7 with the Ultimatte 12 HD. It gives us a great 10-bit 422 image, downsampled from the 4k sensor. It's been great but sometimes I'm noticing a bit of noise right on the edges, even after adjusting veil... We've got a ton of light so we can run the camera at it's cleanest setting gain-wise, -3db / ISO640. Running a little more shutter than normal - about 1/120 for 30fps. The green is perfectly flat and we're using proper Rosco Chroma Green paint. Noise reduction is set to OFF because I've always had better results with keylight if the camera isn't applying it's internal noise reduction which can mess with your matte edges. Wondering if we just need a cleaner camera for perfect results.
We are shooting on the Blackmagic Studio Cameras 4k Pros. It sounds like you have a nice setup. We are using the 4k models. We are using a special paint called Chromalight. There is also a link in the description to my Notion document I have been making on Chromakeying. It has a few more details in it and may be useful for you. Is false color showing a solid green on the background (or at least as solid as you can get it?) -André
@@SociallyU Thanks for the response. Been thinking about going with a BM Studio 4k Pro or maybe an URSA Broadcast G2 in the studio to keep the FS7 available for location shoots. I'll def check out your Notion document. I feel like there could be a whole discussion on greenscreen background brightness. In keylight I find keeping it around 40-45 IRE works great. With the Ultimatte, I've actually noticed that the internal matte is cleaner when we light the background to 55-60 IRE, and by cleaner I mean less noise in the Internal Matte view after sampling the screen. Your results look absolutely fantastic though, so you're def doing it right.
The notion doc is great. You mentioned noise with brighter backgrounds and we do see less noise on brighter backgrounds when we push the green up over 60IRE. Thanks again for sharing.
Hey there, it just depends on your render speeds of your computer I guess. I think you could get a superior key with the delta keyer in Davinci resolve doing it in post, but for live productions the Ultimatte is pretty incredible!
@@SociallyU I've been using delta keyer for years and never gotten anything remotely keyed as good as in this video. So my question is, is it possible to have Ultimatte 12 4K or 8K save keyed video files for offline use with an alpha channel? If so, what format are they saved with?
Hi, where can I find quality images for a green background to simulate a home office or the background like on your video. I can't find any images that have an interesting perceptive. Thanks a lot.
We shoot a lot of plates and measure our exact camera distance / angle, lens, exposure, etc. We also, of course, use Unreal and create a lot of backgrounds with that.
Thanks! I'm not sure what you mean by export a video. We record the live key coming from the Ultimatte. You can also record the key and the fill from the Ultimatte if you wanted to replace the background later. Help me understand more what you are asking and I will do my best to give you a clearer answer. -André
@@SociallyU Thank's for your reply! I was wondering if ultimatte could be used to speed up certain postproduction workflows. To replace the background later as you mentioned, what kind of video asset do you get out of the ultimatte? Hi John, we are using Middle Things software called Middle Control www.middlethings.co/product-middle-control/ we will see about making a video soon to show the details.
If you’re not doing anything live, does the ultimatte device still create a better key than tools in resolve? Or does it make it a lot easier even though resolve is just as capable but would require more fiddling?
The Delta keyer in Resolve is definitely better, but not real time of course. For real time in 4k we have been incredibly impressed with the Ultimatte.
This is really great content. I'm wanting to start creating some greenscreen/Unreal capabilities for my new studio and while I don't have an Ultimatte this is still super fascinating stuff. Where do you source backgrounds? Are they made in Unreal?
Thank you so much! We are either shooting the background plates on location or using Unreal 5. We are trying to as much as possible use Unreal because of all the benefits it gives you.
We are either going on a location and shooting plates where we measure and record every detail, height, angle of the camera or we are using Unreal 5 to render our backgrounds.
Thanks for the reply. One can definitely see the attention to detail you are putting into it. I am currently working with unreal as well. Even if it is a bit hard to find suitable pre made models.
One more quick question, I've seen the BM vids where they have multi cameras, but its never explained well, that would require multi Ultimatte units correct?
Thought I would add onto this…I have 2 ultimatte’s,2 cameras, and the remote 4…I cannot find any info on how to get more then one camera/ultimate to work work. You switch back and forth on your smart 4 remote between cameras I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do that. Can you make a video showing your physical hardware and how you set it up?
Great Vid! There is almost nothing out there for training on Ultimatte which also proves quality content can be made with it! I have a question about your backgrounds in unreal. Firstly, where did you purchase the templates and secondly, are you running a dedicated computer for backgrounds? I have the capability to run a dedicated computer, but the headache of having to design from scratch in unreal has me stuck from moving forward. Thanks for any help!
Thank you! I made this video because I had to figure a lot of this out by trial and error! We have been purchasing a lot of our templates from evermotion.org. We are running a dedicated high end Dell Workstation with an A6000 graphics card. Stockeds.com also has a lot of unreal sets.
Once you created the setup you simply feed the mixed signal to a switcher video input such as ATEM or others? OR can you feed the matte key signal separately as well?
It's super versatile. We are sending the final composited image and then cutting between then final composites. However, it has outputs for key, fill and more on the back.
super cool! learn something! can you show me how to do greenscreen background video effect? im just only using Ultimate 12 HD, it look like media setup there file not support MOV,FLV or MP4 format, but how to do that?
We are using a computer or hyper deck to feed the video into the Ultimatte. That's the only way to play back a video. The internal storage only does a still image. Also it's important that the format of the video matches exactly the resolution and frame rate of the foreground video / what the ultimatte is set to.
Thanks I have the mini HD I can't find any good tutorials on it.. Ie bringing in movies backgrounds... I does it via hyperdeck but I want a live camera feed or UE.. Game Engine as the background feef
We are using Unreal as the feed to the Ultimattes. It's working great. Make sure whatever you send into it is the exact same resolution and frame rate in order for it to show.
Are the backgrounds self made? Or is there a source to download them. I can't find a good source where I can get such bg from different angles. Thanks for the great video!
We are using the Blackmagic Ultimatte 12, it's a real-time hardware keying solution. It's the device Andre is interfacing with in the video. The Ultimatte HD Mini has HDMI based inputs so its a great starting point!
Is ~44 IRE the perfect brightness for the green? Which BMD camera do you use? I still have problems with BRAW and greenscreen (I don't have the Ultimate 12) and get way cleaner results with an old FS700 and a Odysee Q7 RAW recorder (12-bit CDNG). I expose the green around 55-60 IRE. That works fine with the Sony but is a mess with my BMD cameras.
44IRE is the recommended and is working great for us. We just upgraded to the Blackmagic Studio Camera 6ks. We had the 4k version used during this filming. We are using the Chromalight paint for the green wall. Thanks for watching and good luck with your keying!
Yes you can. That's what we are doing. The newest models are the only ones that have a stills library that will let you upload a still. We are either playing back a video plate or we are sending an unreal output to them.
Hi, we actually went to our local home improvement store and purchased a bunch of kitchen lights that we connected to a DMX controller and have multiple zones of lighting that we can control the intensity of.
Ours must need a factory reset. The background input stopped working. There is very little information on how to fix this besides making sure the video output res and frame matches foreground.
That sounds frustrating! Yes they do need to match resolution and frame rate. I haven't had that happen to give better troubleshooting tips. Let us know what fixed it if you get it fixed please.
Thanks a lot. Please stick to the style and keep it short, if possible. It is rare I don't feel like someone is steeling my time with youtube. Congrats!!!

great video I don't have a ultimatte but was thinking of getting the small one they made.
This is awesome! Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello,
can you explain about the matte.
what is matte
Thanks for this. Is there a new link to the Notion Doc?
Sorry about that, we changed some things around in Notion. I've updated the description to have the new link to the document. Let us know if that doesn't work for you. - André
Much appreciated André@@SociallyU
EPIC
Thank you so much!
Hi great video!! What lens you are using?
We are currently shooting with the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 and the Sigma 50-100 f1.8 lenses.
Is it advantageous at all to use ultimate with an offline workflow or is it really only for live keying/production?
Hey there, it just depends on your render speeds of your computer I guess. I think you could get a superior key with the delta keyer in Davinci resolve doing it in post, but for live productions the Ultimatte is pretty incredible!
@@SociallyU I've been using delta keyer for years and never gotten anything remotely keyed as good as in this video. So my question is, is it possible to have Ultimatte 12 4K or 8K save keyed video files for offline use with an alpha channel? If so, what format are they saved with?
Still wondering if its possible to use Ultimatte 12K with offline production somehow.
Great video, thanks for sharing your workflow!
Is there a way to export the keyed video? That ultimatte key is crazy good!
Is it something like the combined matte shown at 3:58?
ps. sorry if it's confusing as english is not my native language. Keep up the amazing content!
ok that was neat how you used that stream deck XL any chance you can show us how you hooked that your steam deck xl to your camera controls of send a link how to
Hi John, we are using Middle Things software called Middle Control www.middlethings.co/product-middle-control/ we will see about making a video soon to show the details.
Fantastic. I am struggling with finding good background pictures for my own shots. Do you have a recommendation where to look?
We are either going on a location and shooting plates where we measure and record every detail, height, angle of the camera or we are using Unreal 5 to render our backgrounds.
Thanks for the reply. One can definitely see the attention to detail you are putting into it. I am currently working with unreal as well. Even if it is a bit hard to find suitable pre made models.
One more quick question, I've seen the BM vids where they have multi cameras, but its never explained well, that would require multi Ultimatte units correct?
Good question, yes you need one Ultimatte for each camera.
@@TheRyanVan I think you'd need a vision mixer no?
@@ShadowArchive I think I need a switcher? (Gigabit switcher)
@@SociallyU Thank you so much!
It's a combination of plates we shoot on location and Unreal engine 5.
Incredible thank you!
You bet!
What editing software are you using for the chrome key
We are using the Blackmagic Ultimatte 12, it's a real-time hardware keying solution. It's the device Andre is interfacing with in the video. The Ultimatte HD Mini has HDMI based inputs so its a great starting point!
Does this work on the bmpcc 4k
hlo i want to know how we take input of layers in ultimatte 4k
With 44 IRE it really worked better with outer Pockets 6K Pro. This week we got also the Ultimate 12 4K Keyer
Question. Is it possible to put video files behind your subject? With the use of a hyperdeck? Or is it just still images?
Yes you can. That's what we are doing. The newest models are the only ones that have a stills library that will let you upload a still. We are either playing back a video plate or we are sending an unreal output to them.
@@SociallyU thank you very much, so just for clarity is the hyperdeck needed or you can just send in a video feed from another computer?
@@mrstewart7435 It is an SDI feed. The only requirement is that it must be at the same resolution and same frame rate.
@@SociallyU thanks again!!!
HI, Great work, can you please tell me what lighting you are using for green background.
Hi, we actually went to our local home improvement store and purchased a bunch of kitchen lights that we connected to a DMX controller and have multiple zones of lighting that we can control the intensity of.
We also supplement that with actual professional grade lighting of course.
@@SociallyU Wow, Smart! I was thinking the same way but didn't know if it works. Thanks for confirming.
@@SociallyU can you please give me some reference for the lights
to avoid flickering
what do you use to get your false color display?
We use the foreground option in the ultimatte to show the raw picture and then we turn on false color on the camera!!
Hello. How can I remove the aliasing?
Where are you seeing aliasing? Give me some more details. I don't see aliasing on ours. Maybe it's your settings?
Thanks a lot. Please stick to the style and keep it short, if possible. It is rare I don't feel like someone is steeling my time with youtube. Congrats!!!
Thank you so much! I was feeling frustrated and needed a short video to show all the secrets! Stay tuned we have some new videos in the pipeline. Our debriefs are much longer form as we cover a lot of ground in those, but of course, they are much easier for us to produce since we are doing those meetings anyway. Have a great day!
take my money black magic
haha! Yep, it's fantastic and just a few months ago it was $10,000 a unit, so it's a really great deal!
@@SociallyU Ha! Just a couple years ago, it was $25,000 per unit.
Before that, the Ultimatte HD model was $85,000/unit (gulp)!
I want to see how well it keys your hair hehehe
haha, instead of a face for radio, it's a head for chroma keying! Oh, and I am keyed in this. :)
More unreal engine stuff please :)
Coming soon!
very nice thankyou for doing this vieos, when @liveproductionmastery did the tour of your setup i really wished you did this type of videos. we are over Barcelona, Spain and want to do a colab if!
