As a 5 decade musician I enjoy your take on the music. You know more and listen harder than any record reviewer I ever heard. Of course, your not a reviewer your a serious jazz enthusiast . Thanks for your channel.
Ken, besides this being an excellent video, I also wanted to let you know how glad I am that you’ve been making what seems to be so many more videos as of late. Always enjoy hearing you talk about records, gear, or whatever. Thanks, Ken!
Hey Ken great video, I do love Alfie! That sonny was reissued along with Oliver’s blues and the abstract truth (acoustic sound series) they sound really nice. Several more impulse titles to come :) including duke and trane one of my favorites.
My dad, Bob Hammer, was the musical director and did the arrangements on I Just Dropped by to Say Hello and The Voice That Is. It was really cool that you opened up the gate fold so I could see his picture in the album. Dad also wrote liner notes and did arrangements for lots of Impulse records. Thanks!
Ken awesome impulse choice that Coltrane is so underrated especially the track Out of this world it blows me away every time . Sonny on a impulse is smokin especially the collaboration with Mickey Roker. And when you talk Impulse you always have to include a McCoy Tyner his impulse contribution is over the top stunning Ken loved it brother. Lovellandrew
Nice round up. Verve has made good re-issues from the Impulse catalogue since 2020 as part of its Acoustic Sounds series. Similar quality/price to Tone Poets.
So if records are vinyls then cars are… steels, houses are woods, you are … crap? Pathetic that grammar and articulation scare you. No one, kiddies, calls them that unless you faux hipsters try way too hard. 16 am I, hahah you’re wrong all over the place. Now go to sleep and lay down on your batting and springs. No doubt you’re wise enough to know clever when it pummels you.
Thanks For the video Ken, Hey the thing about Organ jazz is mostly there is no Jazz bass. Bummer. Shirley Scott always has a bass player so more like a piano player on organ. Love her albums!
I’m thrilled to see I have 7 of the 10. I’m on the right track if Ken gives them a thumbs up. 👍 As usual great content sir. Never miss a posting. Thanks
It’s Sound of Music - wild that song almost became a muse for Mr, Coltrane and that his version inspired the Doors Light My Fire directly. You can really hear it. Music is incredibly fun that way.
Once again a very entertaining video. How you and „Dan the Jazz shepherd“ brought me to jazz - thank you for that. „Nights of ballads and blues“, „out of the afternoon“ and „the truth and abstract blues“ are my favs from the Impulse label. I’m missing on your list „Heavy Sounds“ und „Mingus Mingus Mingus“
Nice selection. Hard to pick ten albums from such a essential label. S. Manne, E. Jones, Ch. Mingus, Ch. Hamilton, A. Shepp - I wish I could alive 200 years to listen so important and amazing music from Impulse. You did surprise me with the Shirley, I have to check this album. Rollins on Impulse I did buy from 2019 Verve Vital Vinyl Reissue for 19 euro. For that money easy to love, even cut from digital source. Maybe not for audiophiles, but for hifi/jazz enthusiast good choice. Thank´s.
Great video! Camera looks great too! I've definitely got some new impulse titles to check out, I'm listening to that Tyner record currently. I know the Acoustic Sounds line just reissued the Sonny Rollins album you showed and Haynes' "Out of the Afternoon" is coming in a few months. Love your description of A Love Supreme, spot on and informative as always!
Great choices Ken - I would try to find a way to include Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus. Could you share your views on the later ABC and MCA pressings?
They are Records !! Always have been and still are. No such word as Vinyls ? But, I have a Bathroom floor that is covered in Vinyl..Not Vinyls ? Either ..
That "Sonny Rollins on Impulse" LP was part of the recent "impulse 60" by Acoustic Sounds. Mastered from the original analog tapes by Ryan Smith. Surprisingly, there are a number of NM copies available for cheap. You can probably still find new copies too. Also, that Oliver Nelson LP has recently been released (from OG tapes) and that is a definite "must have". Thanks for another excellent video Ken. "Thanks and have a great day!"
for me East Broadway Run, Alfie along the bridge are the best Sonny Rolins albums (an avant-garde/free, a third stream and a more conventional hard bop). I hope Acoustic sounds reissue the first two ones just as they did with Sonny Rollins on Impulse
Yes, and it was Creed Taylor who signed Coltrane to Impulse, contrary to popular opinion. And he produced the first 9 impulse albums including Coltrane’s first record for the label, Africa/Brass. But Thiel still deserves massive credit for allowing Impulse to develop into such an artistically significant label after Taylor left to go to Verve. And back in the 50s also signed Buddy Holly(!)
I really love “Stolen Moments” . Analogue Productions just did an Impulse Series earlier this year. Blues and the Abstract Truth as well as a few others in this Impulse list were part of the series so some of them are even currently in print! Lastly, you really seem to love Out of the Afternoon as you have mentioned it in multiple videos. Maybe I haven’t listened closely enough yet to dig it as much as you do.
I’m enjoying the Impulse “Vital Vinyl” reissue series, “Original Label * Original Tapes * Original Sound and Design”. IMP-215, Coultrane, reissue is produced by Michael Cuscuna. They are doing a very good job on these. The equal of the Tone Poet series.
As a 5 decade musician I enjoy your take on the music. You know more and listen harder than any record reviewer I ever heard. Of course, your not a reviewer your a serious jazz enthusiast . Thanks for your channel.
Thanks for your very nice comment. I do review jazz records for jazz times.
I could watch these videos all day
Ken, besides this being an excellent video, I also wanted to let you know how glad I am that you’ve been making what seems to be so many more videos as of late. Always enjoy hearing you talk about records, gear, or whatever. Thanks, Ken!
Thank a lot, Nick
thank you for the Shirley Scott recommendation. Amazing.

Great selection! Been mesmerized by Nights of Ballads and Blues lately. It’s been on and off the platter the most of any other record this past month.
Thank you again Mr.Micalef, totally agree regarding Sonny Rollins and Alfie ! Magnificent !!
Ken, I really enjoy your videos and knowledge of jazz. Thank you so much.
Thanks emperor Caligula
Nice round up. Verve has made good re-issues from the Impulse catalogue since 2020 as part of its Acoustic Sounds series. Similar quality/price to Tone Poets.
Vinyls? Jeez Ken, don't encourage the 16 year olds who don't know better.
Yeah he lost me when I read that.
Lol

I grabb every Impulse record I find I got only three of them on your list and yes Sonny Rollins are reissued on vital vinyl.
Awesome, thanks for sharing some much knowledge.
Nice video Ken!

Sonny Rollins has just been reissued on Tone Poet.. really good pressing. Great video. Thanks from a cold London England..
I love and miss cold London England
Not on Tone Poet - it was acoustic sounds!
@@matzeflamingos good point. You're right. Anyway, well pressed at a decent price!

Sonny Rollins on Impulse ! has been re released on the Acoustic Sounds Series and highly recommend it on its analog mastering and beautiful gatefold.

In addition to the Acoustic Sounds series, Sonny Rollins on impulse was reissued in 1997 by mca.
Good content as always. And the video quality has improved much too.
Thanks, new lens! Now I just have to clean out the bookcase...
@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 The auto focusing seems to work great too. Much appreciated sir.
fab, thanks. pls do your strata east faves, love cecil mcbee
A couple of these are for sale through Impulse's store and their acoustic sounds series: jazz.centerstagestore.com/collections/acoustic-sounds

I don't have many, but a good idea.
My dad did arrangements on that album and Black Saint and Sinner Lady. Both stellar albums!

Out of the Afternoon will be reissued as part of the Acoustic Sounds series in January 2022.

Great video ! Youre gonna cost me lot of money 😂🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
Broke like me!
Kai & JJ baby!!!!!
i'll look into the Rollins!
Hartman has three on Impulse. “The Voice That Is!” Is the other one

don`t forget: the black saint and the sinner lady - mingus mingus mingus mingus - mama too tight - fire music
My dad, Bob Hammer, did arrangements for both of those excellent Mingus albums.
Ken, you're costing me a f**king fortune in records...
Bob Thiele and John Coltrane did not found the impulse label, Creed Taylor did.
Reaching fourth is a beautiful record. BATAT is the new KOB. Burned it out years ago.
Jesus man!!!
Archie Shepp, Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders...
Sonny Rollins on Impulse on DOL and Acoustic Sounds.
DOL doesnt count!
@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 DOL isn't Putin

Roy Haynes is one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time and that album is his masterpiece
If I'm not mistaken, I thing Trane recites "A Love Supreme" 19 times.
What is a vinyls.
That's exactly what I want to know. Make it stop!
The organ is hip????
There’s no such thing as vinyls. They are records. Period.
East Broadway Run Down. Rollins
Argh, "vinyls" is like nails on a blackboard.
Language changes, seems the term is here to stay 🤷♂️
@@sensational_cellar8606 I certainly hope not.
Never hear of Flying Dutchman label and Red Baron
