There is a difference between cheap and affordable. Its important. Venezuela has cheap petrol. You wouldn't want to live there (people who live there don't). I support your point, but avoid the trap set by greenies who will counter with how cheap per mile electricity is. It may well be (provided you are using your own house supply) but it isn't affordable by ordinary people. The car itself is stupid money, then you have to have the charging port fitted. And when you have done all that you have to buy a new house when the car bursts into flames and burns it to the ground. ;-)

It is foolish to think that wind could power our electricity needs in full. Also, in the manufacture of a single wind turbine, more carbon is released into the atmosphere than is likely to be saved by the operation of that wind turbine during its life. They have a lifespan of 15-20 years before they need to be replaced. Very little of the wind turbine can be recycled so most of it will go to landfill. We’ll need oil for many decades to come, not just as a lubricant and fuel but also for the by products like plastics, cosmetics etc. We are nowhere near having the technology or infrastructure to stop the use of oil and gas and certainly will not have by 2050.

    • @leegoodman297

The UK does not need to do that much as it already has the infrastructure going forward for many many years to come. But with this fascination over green and renewables, I'm afraid we are just too early in our time to count on anything new at this current time. This is often a very narrow discussion which is always also the big mistake of activists. We cannot only focus on electricity and heating as an issue with using oil and gas.
The products extracted from crude oil are the mainstays of modern life. Unless we want to step back over 70 years and have SOME substituted items made from coal, cast iron and glass,
People have so many products made from plastics, essentials such as spectacles, contact lenses and mobile phones, laptops, medical appliances, industrial gases, chemicals for pharmaceuticals, lubricants, paints, adhesives, laundry products, shoes, cosmetics, man made fabrics, engineering seals, sealants, varnishes, solvents, asphalt, insulation materials, window frames, house gutters, pesticides, epoxy for vehicles and industrial adhesives, wiring insulation, headphones, TV sets and flat screens.
Road fuels are basically a heavily taxed, yet small by-product of oil cracking, very low in the priority.
Until an activist has an alternative for ALL of those products, then we will always be using oil.
Yes, we talk about Nuclear for electricity but have still not solved the problem of what we do with nuclear waste, apart from kicking it down the generations as someone else's problem.

North Sea Oil will NEVER EVER give us energy security, by far the majority of the oil pumped out of the North sea is sold on the international market, just like Russian, Saudi, American oil, and just about any other country that produces Oil. As we buy Oil from the international market, the price is governed by the market, the amount of oil produced from the North Sea will NOT reduce the cost of products, including petrol, that use oil in their making. At best these new Licences will slow down the number of Job losses in the oil industry, they will not create 'new jobs', just the ones being lost as old oil fields become uneconomical.

This is very basic. Some think weare only replacing our electricity. We are replacing 4 times that in transport heating and hot water 5 times the existing elec will be needed and backup alone will cost 30 trillion ££££

33 years after a dire warning about the climate from the IPCC plus a final dire warning we are still debating what to do and burning more fossil fuels than ever.
People enjoy the massive benefits that science has brought to the world and yet when science gives a dire warning about the future climate many people including Julia do not want to believe it?
Being selective as to what science you relieve will not change the future if the future climate is proven to be beyond doubt.

We could, but you can't make steel, glass and plastics from electrical power. At the moment we have to use fossil fuels to reach the temperatures needed to smelt iron ore and silica, otherwise we are really going to end up in the stone age, no cars no airplanes no trains no hospitals no pensions no cutlery!!! Who in their right minds wants to go back to that!
