My father always had to have scruntcheons (sp.?) with his salt cod. One of those comfort foods that I have not had in years. My mother always made white sauce with it as well. The leftovers were transformed into fish cakes.
That's the Newfoundland way. It's not the food of the past that was unhealthy. It's the foods of today. I'm starting to believe more and more that we need to eat more like our grandparents than the foods we eat today.
It was very common back in the day. All that protein got you moving, and even with the salt, it was very healthy. Now people consider cereals for healthy breakfast foods. We need to move back to the way our grandparents ate, and I'm sure we would see a difference in the health of ourselves.
Another awesome meal my buddy , all cooked to perfection. Hope you find a great home for that little puppy , I'm sure you won't have any issues doing that with such a little beauty.
Thanks, Mr. Garry. I found a beautiful family that's having this puppy. It didn't take long. This meal was as good as mudder makes it. The cast iron and the stove truly make a difference when cooking. Plus new potatoes from the garden was a long time waiting for some good spuds
People have bacon or ham for breakfast, they are salty. Recently read that having meat (fish) and potatoes was a regular breakfast till when people started working in factories. Worried the big breakfast would make workers sluggish so there was a marketing campaign to encourage lighter breakfasts like cereal. Didn't grow up with hard bread but we did have Pilot bread (crackers). Even in the 1970's in Weymouth, MA they sold them in large bins at the store, you would take what you needed.
Each generation wants convince, things that are quick and simple, less time to cook or not wanting to take the time to cook. I wish some things were more like the old days.
He eats the old-fashioned way, very little process crap, we might think his meals are hard on the body, but it's the other way around, his eating habits are far better than ours. The food he eats the body is able to break it down, most of our foods the body don't recognize the ingredients or there toxic ingredients. He still eats the way our grandparents ate and that's the way we should all be eating to be honest.
That's the best meal yet! Love your channel, New Haven County Connecticut.
Loved my scrunch ins. Went back in September, first time in some thirty years. Heading back again in the spring. Love your channel.
It's so good to hear you're going back in the spring! I'm also glad you're enjoying our channel. It's great to have you part of our community..

Guess I need to get back to Newfoundland and try more local food!
Absolutely
Never had such a dish, but I think I'd love it. Can you please explain Brewis to me though?
It's actually called Hard Bread and it's soaked in water until it becomes soft and that's what we call Brewis.
Now that's what I call ballast ....... people have forgotten how to eat.....
What kind of salt did you use for the cod?
We call it fish salt, its a coarse grey sea salt. It's very common around fishing communities. Difficult to find anywhere else.
The rind is the best…. Especially if it’s cooked extra
It's amazing in baked beans 🫘
That sure beats my fried potatoes and eggs this morning.
Your breakfast sounds pretty good to me! 👍
Buddy, ya have to keep the rind on the salt pork......best part!
