Age is one factor... however, when distilleries don't want to disclose the age (no matter how young it is), alarm bells ring in my head that they are up to no good. I don't mind young whisky in the blend - just let us know! I truly appreciate blenders like Compass Box or Barrell Craft or Bardstown Bourbon Co that are willing to disclose the percentages and ages of the sourced components!

I totally get this!! I enjoy knowing the in depth breakdown of a dram too, it's so interesting and useful for understanding where the individual flavour notes come from.

Age is definitely a factor in my decision on what I am buying especially because I enjoy a well aged oak profile. I have found 6yr old whiskey that I have really enjoyed and 15yr whiskey that I haven’t. Age isn’t everything for sure but I typically do enjoy an older whiskey. Cheers

For every day stuff I completely agree but you get above about 70 bucks and I start getting critical. I enjoy finished whisky though so I'm buying plenty of younger stuff and those tend to compliment some of the more pronounced finishes. Age is definitely a circumstantial thing.

Some of my favorite whiskies are NAS. Ardbeg Dark Cove is one of my favorite scotches of all time. And I also love Laphroaig Lore. Peat heads should prefer younger whiskies as age tends to cause the peat to recede.
On the bourbon side, two of my favorite Wild Turkey releases of the last year, Generations and Single Rickhouse F, were both NAS. Blenders who are really good can take a young whiskey and add vitality to some older barrels. Bardstown Discovery #11 is the perfect example of that (which would technically carry a 6 year age statement). Smoke Wagon cross-vintage blends the UCUF expression. That has drifted a bit over the years, but I still think it is a solid pour.

Laphroaig Lore is actually 7-21 years, so even more incentive to skip the age statement.
Glen Moray are really good at NAS offerings. Some of their expressions makes me wonder if age statements do more harm than good.
I love Dalmore Port Wood Reserve, another great tasting NAS.
Having a bottle of Glen Grant 18 or 21 sure feels good though, but I kind of appreciate it more on the shelf than on my palate. The diminishing returns on some of these older aged whiskies are just so large that it gets increasingly hard to justify a purchase.
You're very charming! Thumbs up for the video!

Thank you so much for this!
Dalmore Portwood is a fantastic bottle!
I definitely know what you mean about the age statement bottle making you 'feel good', definitely a great marketing effect. I will continue exploring great NAS options. Cheers🥃

Always try a sample or at the least have somebody recommend according to your preferences. I bought an early Ileach on recommendation, apparently it’s gone downhill but I cannot confirm that. Recently I was able to try the Compass Box „The One I Love“ which I promptly bought. I still keep an eye on age but since the overpricing has run riot recently I look to the alternatives that give better value for money. However, I may cry when I finish my Springbank 18 which proves that there are always exceptions.

Yes! Samples are definitely a good way to go if possible. There are definitely some overpriced bottles out there (but some great bargains too!)

And how do you really know that the age statement is the TRUTH ? 🤔

Good question - I guess regulations and legal implications, but that might not be foolproof! If anyone has any better insights, let me know!

So, is there 18 YO whisky which is bad?

    • @BottleRaiders
      @BottleRaiders  4 месяца назад +1

There are definitely some that are better than others! Some very overpriced ones too.

@@BottleRaiders I can completely agree about the overpricing. I would even argue that all 18+ YO whiskies are more or less overpriced, at least in my location. You can purchase at least couple good bottles of 12-15YO for the price of one 18YO and I'm all about enjoying my bottles, not just admiring them on my shelf.
