I'm starting up a pedal company, my first pedal will be called youtube in a box, it's the pedal that you use to watch and comment all day long and never actually play or practice guitar.
I NEED IT!
This is so spicy
I’ll take two, please..
Did you end up making the pedal?
So a phone or computer
“Chewy!” Perfect word to describe that tone!
What you're doing is spot on. From what I've seen a lot of these blues guys will use a tube screamer type pedal (I prefer the Maxon OD-820) with just a little bit of boost into a rectified tube amp (what your plexi pedal is doing for you).
Greatest tone = great simplicity... Travis just proved it!
Great tone. I actually prefer the tone with just the Clarksdale pedal engaged but then again I'm more into pure blues than blues rock.
Awesome, I'm just wondering why it took me this long to come across this... only 4 years late... lol. Proof that good Tone never gets old... thanks
thanks for the video Travis I play a lot of folks and blues with acoustic guitar and this is a perfect way for me to back off the overdrive but still have some on tap
Great Tone!
Great presentation man. Simple, short and informative. I bought an overdrive pedal today and by the looks of it I also need a screamer and I am set :-). Thanks a lot.
Kudos on the great video and sound quality. The differences in tone really come through. Thanks for taking the trouble to make quality videos!
Awesome tone. Loving it!
Make this a series please! Getting a country, rock, metal, etc Tone!! Great tips
You can't believe how often we get this question especially when dealing with fender amps as the drive unit. Marshall plex guys [especially when dimed] obviously don't require all that much in the way of pedals but Fender...that's a different story. I will say this though. Don't forget about how much newer fender amps can be moded to get the gain and tones of the past. Just re-tubing with good new old stock favorites can make a hell of a difference in creating 'blues' tones. Still though, especially at lower volumes your pedals really do play an integral roll. We like the Wampler line. Never had anybody who was not able to setup 'blues' tones almost no matter what amp they were in front of.
Hey,
Thanks for the advice, I always knew about stacking pedals, like SRV for example. I normally get overdrive by cranking my amp, with a low master volume, but this saves the hassle of fiddling with my amp knobs 24/7.
Definitely something I will consider. A mid-heady pedal then a second.
Thanks for the video.
Loved those licks. Great sound gotta get me one of those peddles.
I had just set this same type of thing up... VHT V-Drive as my base overdrive into a Dumbler clone for the solo boost. I think I need to start playing Wampler pedals though. That Plexi-Deluxe is sexy!!!!!!
Great tips, tone and video folks!! What about using a Clarksdale > catalingbread Dirt Little Secret > Blues Junior III? You guys could do more demos with a Blues Junior!! Cheers
Super nice tone 🔥
what you need is a The Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue Combo and a 2010 American Standard Fender Stratocaster , that works for me!
Travis Feaster is a killer blues player here in Indy.
This is good information, but in the end I believe it's about finding your own tone that you really like yourself.
Hey Travis, Don't know how I missed this! You have a great way of explaining just "how" to bring in THE tone most of us wannbee's are looking for. ThankYou! so much. Also I reckon you were spoilt for choice being able to choose from Brians' many pedals on tap!
Nice sounds and I want one of these Plexidrives!
Hi Travis, it would be cool if you could do another How to Spice Up Your Blues Riffs Using a Modified Blues Scale. I use the stuff I learned from it all the time.
sounds awesome!!! I have a clarksdale....I may need to buy a plexi now....goddam
Something to be said about using the same builder when stacking pedals Seems to be a quieter set up and works well I use Ibanez a TS and their orange od/fuzz Older pedals but really been digging the tones Next pedal is going to be the Plexi drive mini
I miss Travis!
I like a boost pedal to get tone, stacked with the mid boost pedal. I feel it is more amp like. My amps to to loud to get a good power stage overdrive. The Keeley workstation is amazing. I use it with my Paisley Drive. My spark boost works well too. I play mostly single coil guitars.
It is great you answered my question broke it down for me thanks.
Illuminating. I have a Marshall and just got an LP Classic and I just can't get where I want to be with the distortion pedal. Your stacked tone is about where I'm trying to get....never really tried stacking OD's before. At this point, the closest I can get is clean channel with my BOSS SD-1, which is the only OD pedal I have.
Sounds great
Learned a load, thankyou!
That was cool bro. Sweet.
Your videos are so educational. Thank you. I would love to see how how / what pedals you would use for the blues rock tones by Cinderella " Long cold winter " song. Probably one of the best lead sounds of all time. I'd also like to see how to use two delay pedals, one for slap back and another with like 3 repeats and longer delay.. Since you did say you wanted suggestions..:-) :-) :-)
Good man, thank you...
how about more detail about how you got that SRV tone with the brittish OD pedal in your other video? that tone was amazing!
I like pedals for convenience, inspiration and originality. Sometimes I just want to play at night and want a nice clipping tone, something big Marshall amps don't do very well unless you have a master volume. Nothing beats the real thing but sometimes the real thing can get you noise complaints. Just ask Santana why he used to practice with his speakers face down into pillows, I doubt he will say it was for convince.
i like it with Texas special pick ups and a tube screamer
Good tip thank you Sir
Hey Travis! It will be a delight to hear the Plexi Drive Deluxe on a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue! Do you have one to try? If not, could you try the two chanels of the Plexi Drive Deluxe engaged? Thanks a lot!
Hi Travis! How to get a smooth/creamy/warm/singing Blues tone? (NOT fuzzy/crunchy)
Will stupid elitists stop commenting on videos about tone. I am not am expert in blues tones but what I hear I like it a lot. Go cry cry about tube amps in videos about them. Dude you have a nice playing style and of course you're going to use pedals from the company your video is featured on.
New video up, comment with any questions :)
***** I know Travis mentioned it in another video, but what are the pups in that strat? They sound great!
James Russo They are pickups wound by Grosh Guitars :)
***** It's funny to watch Travis holding that guitar, because he loves it so much. He's always got that grin. :)
LuckyLicks
Not the right video to ask but why haven't you made a transparent nice bite hot toned tube powered pedal??????
Best classic players tone for moi is without the soul destroying pedals 😉
no......when you kicked in the 2nd pedal it became too compressed and gainy and it didn't sound bluesy at all, an optical compressor like Mooer yellow which is astonishingly transparent after the clarksdale would have been 100% better.
Subscribing! Very helpful and straightforward - thank you!!
The blues tone comes from how you play and the vocalisations of the guitar notes
Peddle : to sell or offer for sale from place to place : hawk [broadly] : sell- They peddled fruits and vegetables from a truck on the side of the road.
Pedal: : a lever pressed by the foot in the playing of a musical instrument (such as an organ or piano)
What tuning do you generally use for blues? Standard or Eb?
Yes.
Nice! Thanks!
Thanks for the info on getting tone. You showed the use of specific pedals. How about amp settings? Thanks again. Brien
Very nice! What about the Hot Rod Deluxe's EQ settings? Treble, Mid, Bass at around noon?
***** Yep, and presence around noon as well I believe.
Yes basically using the pedals to Eq
A hot road deluxe and Stratocaster for me
What’s pickups on that one please?
How about a "Feaster Drive Deluxe?" One pedal, two great tastes.
Thanks for this! You pointed out that you didn't use the boost side of the PDD, but used a Clarksdale for the lighter OD. I ordered a PDD yesterday, so I'm wondering what the difference would be and why you chose that. Thanks!
***** The Clarksdale has much more control over the eq and gain, where the boost on the PDD has a set gain and eq and the knob controls the volume of it.
So, the top knob right marked "post gain" is the left sides gain knob, and the bottom right knob marked "pre gain" is the right side's level, not gain, knob!? And, yeah, I meant, other than lots more knobs and shaping ability, are the Clarksdale and the right side of the PDD similar circuits. Hey, thanks for the replies! I'm excited to get the pedal in the mail!
***** Yes, the "post gain" is the plexidrive gain control. The Pre gain is a boost control that when used together at the same time works like an additional gain boost. The clarksdale and the boost on the plexidrive are both based on tubescreamer-y type circuits.
Thanks SO much for the info. I appreciate it. I just couldn't get there being two levels and one gain, but it's marked one level and two gains. But, I get it now...I think. Glad it's not marked hashbrownwrong. ;-)

what is the scale on that guitar? Looks kind of smaller than a Fender or Travias has large hands.Great guitar playing..
I have a Paisley overdrive first and then a Pinnacle Deluxe second for my stacking. I thought about getting the Clarksdale and putting it first and leaving my Paisley for the stack? I think my Pinnacle is too much. I play country & blues.. What do you think?
Andrew Hester yeah, that'd be a good setup; especially for a country and blues type thing.
What hrd 3 or 4, blues delux? Or reg? Plexi delux v1 or 2?
How do you get the bridge pickup to not sound thin? If you wasn’t using pedals and playing “clean” do you use the guitar’s tone knob or the amp settings? Thanks
How do you get that 50's blues tone, stuff like Junior Parker's blue flames, Earl Hooker on "move on down the line" or Pat Hare's tone?
Can't the overdrive on the amp be used as the final stage?
Hmm. Good video. I'm old school in that if I have a good tube amp, I'll use my volume knob to clean up the signal.., :-) :-)
I can get there alot faster by unplugging my Strat and plugging in my ES 335 !
Please tell how do you mic your amp so stereo and wide? How do you place your mics and what type of mics? Thanks
what strings are you switching between to play that groove at 1:55.. so cool
To get that bluesy tone would you place your overdrive before or after the bos DS-1 distoration pedal. I am running it through a Line 6 Spider III amp.
DS-1 is not for blues, and throw that Line 6 over your right shoulder :-)
Travis, what is the difference between the boosted PDD and running the Clarksdale into the PDD, tonaly?
cool dude
what I do is use a distortion pedal (with the distortion level at 9 oclock) and an overdrive at the same time when I go for lead tones. Is that ok? for me it sounds a little bit different from your average blues tone but it sounds great and I want to give authenticity to my one tone.
do whatever sounds good to your ears
I followed some tips, got a pretty awesome sound, then I realized:
*I don't even play blues live* 🤣
How is that blues tone working for you?
I don’t use pedals I just keep adjusting my fender blues deluxe
Use your vol knob to ride the wave from clean-ish to rhythm to lea. Cost: $€£ 0
The blues tone you want is the tone you create.
Travis, does the plexidrive deluxe work well just as a boost? I recently purchased a velvet fuzz (awesome pedal by the way!!!) and was wondering how these two would sound together?
I can't help but roll my eyes when I hear someone ask something like 'how do you get a blues tone?" I mean... What -- Clapton/SRV blues tone? BB King blues tone? John Lee Hooker Blues tone? Jeff Healey blues tone? They pretty much always mean the higher gain stuff and don't even realize there's a world of blues tones out there from really clean to really dirty. You did an excellent job sticking to the foundational basics, like using lower gain overdrives and neck pickups. Good demo.
can you send the backing track link of the intro melody ? please
....or just buy a Marshall. No gain pedals needed :)
+Michael Bell correct, just a couple of thousand bucks ;)
+Michael Bell Marshall awesome, but tonal variety is what is happening here. THIS tone based not on amp gain, but pedals. Apples n Oranges. Both are great. p.s. Nice tones Travis.
Or a traynor ycs50h and save a few bucks
Eric C. uses a fender cranked to get that natural overdriven sound
Black star for me, just had to use a Marshall, I hate the Marshall sound no offence.
The trusty ts9 tube screamer
What's the intro song/music?. Is it one of Travis' songs?.
+tubefogg3r No, it's from one of our artists, Andrew Oye, who scores a ton of music for various tv shows and movies.
You have songs originals? For uan serie.
Yep, look up WTF band or Travis Feaster band
What's the song of the video intro?
I think it's just from directcomposer.com
Wampler Pedals thanks so much! Beautiful melody.
Killer
Or you could use a Fender Deluxe Reverb set to 7.
Glen and tinnitus to go with it too!!!
@Graysons Motozone- Have you ever played trough a Deluxe Reverb? It's 22 watts through a single 12" speaker, you can't really call it loud, even cranked all the way up. Sure you can't crank it in your apartment bedroom, but that wasn't the question was it? The question was how to get great blues tone, and I answered that question, if that's being a tool, so be it.
Damn ur good man
I have a Eric Clapton Stratocaster and A New 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb amp . I can’t get that Vintage Sound . I also have an MXR Uni Vibe And an OCD Overdrive. Any Suggestions Please Thank You.
Its near impossible to sound exactly like a recording of an artist but to get close you'd either have to try out a bunch of pedals and see which one sounds the best to your ears or crank your amp's volume past 12 o'clock (you'd need an attenuator for this so you don't go deaf).
That's a sweet Grosh Stratocaster!
I find stacking just gives me too much buzz, 60 cycle hum, white noise etc etc.

Travis I have a vox ac4 amp and use a EHX soul food pedal playing a Tele, how would I set the amp here to get the bluesy tones you get, thx mate
Thanks for your reply, fucking NOT!¬!!!!
My apologies Tenodogblu, I missed your initial comment. Travis doesn't work for us anymore, I'm not sure how he'd suggest it. I'm not familiar with the AC4 so I can't be of much help there.
OK man, thank you for your reply though, I appreciate that.
tenodogblu
Sorry I can't be of more help :/
I think that when you use effect s you are loosing the chance to find you tone and create your sound ungus Young from AC DC never used effect and well that to me is creativity there is a way to create tone and sound by playing using your fingers bending amp and pick up combined you have to find it now if you are just going to be a cover guitar players well you are going to need lots of effect s
Right on, Keith Richards, Dickey Betts are just pure tone of themselves, I wasted alot of time with pedals before learning that
Disappointed with this video as it soon became evident that the title should have been 'What Wampler pedals to buy to achieve a blues tone', we all know that the guitar and amp come before considering pedals.
Since when is Wampler the only company that makes Tubescreamers?
Couldn't agree more.
My point is you're criticizing the guy for demonstrating his company's product, but he's very up front about the fact that you can do the same thing with a couple of Tubescreamers. There are many people who make those. Wampler is one of them. I say props to him for admitting it. Most companies, including the big names, make a Tubescreamer and act like it's some innovative new thing.
I know what you mean but the title is: How to Set Up a Good Blues Guitar Tone, and not 'What Wampler pedal to buy to achieve a good blues guitar tone. In my opinion viewers shouldn't have to look passed the title of the video to see whether or not its from an independent or not. which is what the viewers are having to do here. Having said that I don't mean to criticise, its just my view. Love and Piece.
Robert Hooles I liked the presentation. He used Wamplers' version of Tube Screamer and 808, and showed how stacking the pedals worked for him. It was A WAY, NOT THE WAY to set up a good blues tone. Think of a pedal in your bag similar to what he's using and go from there. Brian Wampler is a business man but he doesn't come across as a guy who wants your business by talking down someone else's line. Face it, the guy doing the video got a nice blues tone using his recipe. There are other ways of getting one as well. 👍.
sorrt but just didn't sound good to me, just a boost in front of the clarksdale would have been better imo.
That's Steve Zahn
The stack is way to much for my taste
Jeroen van der Velden agree
Your kinda cheating by driving the front of the amp with your pedal levels. Always going to sound nice with the right valve amp.
1000th person to like this video :)
I just download the blues app to my smartphone. It's free.
